Down to the south and to the east, they have sleet. Notice as we widen this map out a little bit, we are going to catch a break in the action as north. That is the area of low pressure and that will continue to move off to the north and east. A winter storm watch, advisory, all over the area. A winter storm warning including the entire state of iowa. Kansas city right now, winter storm warning. This area in blue is a Winter Weather advisory, and all of these are in effect until tonight or tomorrow morning. 27 right now in des moines, 27 in ames. It is a little warmer to the south and east, and that is why they are seen sleet and freezing rain. By 2 00, three and a half or so inches of snow. What is the latest on the roads . Mark i just talked to des moines public works director Jonathan Gano told me these are perfect conditions for the salt they put down last night. We were out earlier this morning driving around. There certainly are slippery spots but for the most part, if , you drive slowly, its not too hard to get around in the city. The salt brine is doing its job and on 235, we were traveling comfortably around 50 miles an hour. We didnt get any ice or freezing rain before the snow so that seemed to have had a big effect as well. All plow drivers have been out this morning, 100 pieces of equipment. Right now, they are working the snow routes. Gano told me those are main arterials Like University and hickman. They focus on those routes typcially until the snow stops. Then the focus will move to the side streets, the residential streets. Getting on the interstate was pretty rough. It was filled with slush and snow but on the interstate wasnt too bad. The main roads seemed a little worse, like where i live, they dont really plow until later in the day so kind of rough getting out of there and going up and down the hills. Vanessa right now we are heading south on 69 and what we have seen so far, there is a blowing snow off the road, making it slick in some spots. We drove between story city in pockets of freezing rain and then just snow. We have definitely seen some freezing rain. You can hear it, the strata ice. The straight up ice. We have been going about 10 miles an hour under the speed limit, taking it slow. As for traffic, only a few cars on the road. We have not seen too many people out. Overall i would say that conditions are not too bad and it looks like most of the road has been cleared by dot trucks. Marcus it happened just before 11 00 sunday night. A shooting at the Brookside Apartments in the 5200 block of south union. There officers found two people , in a common hallway suffering from gunshot wounds. An adult male was deceased, an adult female was transported to a local hospital where she is expected to survive her injuries.
