Brian houston was alone in the home when the fire started. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Des Moines Police say an officer fired at a man driving toward him, but no one was hurt. The shooting happened early this porter. Police say the man lost control of the vehicle and stopped while being pursued by officers. As an officer got out of his cruiser, the man started driving again and swerved at him. The officer opened fire, but the vehicle continued down the road. But, an Iowa State University species of mosquitoes that can carry the zika virus has been here in the state. In an Iowa State University lab they breed mosquitoes. , across the hallway, a researcher hopes he will soon take a close look at the mosquitoborne zika virus. This is such a new thing, that everyone in the Research World is sort of clamoring at opportunities to go ahead and look at it. Vanessa ryan smith is the head of the breeding lab. He says two species of mosquitoes are known to carry the virus that causes microcephaly, a serious birth defect where kids are born with smaller than average heads. We have at least some reports that one of those species, aedes albopictus, has actually been found in iowa. There is the possibility if it does continue to spread in the United States that it could make it to iowa. Vanessa they dont breed the aedes albopictus, or asian tiger mosquito, in the isu lab. Smith says since its winter dont panic quite yet, unless youre traveling to latin america, where zika virus is the biggest concern, i guess, for people in iowa is if there are traveling to some of these endemic areas, is just to be aware, especially if people are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
