a plan. From Here's produced by American. Play frisbee on God's green ish earth Golden Gate Park in San Francisco California during my. Week with us. There is not and again I say I. Look deep into your radios and marvel at the vision of Warren Hellman. The benevolent progenitor of this year's shindig you'll see blue Gum Eucalyptus trees and circling a field full of people listening to bluegrass music or whatever you see. Know how to build a successful Bluegrass Festival don't have too much bluegrass. And make it free. It was right he was right 750000 human beings will listen to bluegrass or whatever over the course of this weekend that's astounding That's astounding and as a musician whose name has been on Hardly Strictly posters now for a while I wish I could thank each and every one of those humans individually because they're the reason this beautiful anomaly of a festival persists seriously all of the headliners from where on. We are the support act where the side kick the side kick to your hero which by the way is a very familiar position for a bluegrass musician Consider for instance here on my bay area mandolin god the dog David Grisman. Known as many known to many as this acoustic sidekick of one Jerry Garcia. Nice. Good separates good together. Yes Garcia and Grisman Sonny and Cher Hawn and Chewbacca and rest assured that my little boy Calvin has not one but 2 stuffed Tigers named hops which brings us to this week's brand spanking new song about a largely unknown sidekick to a famous 19th century inventor it's going to be a hit. Live from here veterans may have noticed that I keep writing songs about a guy named Samuel Morse who Hardly Strictly invented the electromagnetic Telegraph in the early mid 18 hundreds Hardly Strictly I say because no one person has ever responsible for any great achievement takes a village and in the Telegraph's case scenario Morse relied heavily on the engineering prowess of a man named Alfred Vale Vale was sort of the was in the act to Morse's jobs and speaking of jobs this song's psychic coom hero Alfred Valle began his 840. 5 book about the development of the Telegraph with Chapter 38 bursts 35 from the book of jobs I mean job which goes a little something like this. That they make. And say. Thing here we. Have a question. From our. To Joe in here. To show. Those 1st lightning. To their question higher. Then. Heard the answer. Following my mitts and why I. Been high above the chain. a back. Though. It's just before we met got a fire was struggling to contain. 40. 40 gems then I am tired of the madness and the thing began to. We rely on a couple living to conceive it's clear it's was in fact a combatant in the universe who would ever use this. Seat to She did it. But. She. And we can. We do to. We have a great show for you today please welcome to the current care thank you I. Thank you very much so good to be back here at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass this. Mean. Me to her. Because. She. Thank you. Thank you very much we are the Milk Carton Kids My name is Joey and this is Kenneth and we're so flattered and honored to be after back on the show one of my favorite shows to listen to and then realize that only just a few minutes ago that the show was a about side kicks. And I got I think it's an aggressive move Chris to invite a duo. On to do a show about our kind of in my relationship is fragile enough. Without being thrust into a situation where we have to confront on national radio. Which one of us is the main milk carton kid. I don't know if we're going to sell it here today Kenneth and I think of ourselves just as such equals. And we get along great all the time and never fight. And. That's what the 1st song was about. I. Mean the song is called I'm in everywhere and I said it's off a brand new album called The only ones that came out either yesterday or 5 days from now depending on when this show airs. In the open thank. You. Have you read any of the early reviews for the album Kenneth I know you used to keep up with that kind of thing now I gave up I gave reading about our band many years ago Joey I don't it Chris I don't know if you've ever read about yourself on youtube or read it or any of these things but it's terrifying how do you do it have you done it I have done it before I have to admit I don't do it anymore I have quit Yeah it's a reflection of one of the ugliest sides of our society I find. No really is nevermind the serious part of the comment but really anytime somebody goes on anonymously offers their opinion to nobody How could that turn out well you were. The one step removed from that or music journalists they kind of stuck to the only one that really made me hang it all up was I read this was in Rolling Stone magazine no joke they wrote quote and I quote The tall one is legs funnier than the squat one you were in and with. I kind of like reading the reviews with. Them from the beginning of a career we've been compared to Simon and Garfunkel. Now and I'm kind of Ok with because we all know which one is Garfunkel were. And. Listen Kenneth and I both take turns trading off our moments in the spotlight we're going to play a song I'm used to being playing sort of 2nd fiddle at the guitar player in this band Kenneth usually takes all the flashy solos and gets all the attention and applause and I got sick of it. And so I practiced real hard and we've got a song which is sort of my featured moment as a guitar player so I know it's tempting to sort of think of us both of the quotes but at least in this song I'm going to need your attention on me. Eyes and ears on this side of the stage I wish there were a Jumbotron or something they could get a close up of my fingers. On this song as they fly across the fretboard because it really is I just I've been working hard at it and I hope you appreciate. News or the believe. Me. Being me. Welcome back you're listening to Live from here at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco California thank you thank you thank you Kelley on the bank you thank you thank you thank you because. You know over there on the base that's Mike Elizondo no. Thank you is it himself Mike there's a name that comes up in almost every conversation about great studio musicians and that's James Jamieson James Jamerson the great bassist Motown basis I'm curious what does Mr Jamieson's playing mean to you but James Jamieson is a huge inspiration to me myself being a bass player to me he's the greatest side man and. Absolutely so James did nothing but switched to the electric bass from the upright bass in its infancy in 1957 and instantly became a virtuoso Onsen on the instrument and to me he was an instant virtuoso yet Tony had chops right out the gate and the main thing that James did is he basically defined the sound of Motown in my opinion obviously Motown a great artist had great songs but it was his bass parts that actually gave it its balance and its definition so we'd like to play a song that James maybe it wasn't a huge hit but to me it's one of James's you know incredible performances ever recorded of James. This is so with Mike as James Jamerson and evil O'Donovan as Stevie Wonder Here's Stevie's you can't judge a book by its cover. See . You. Just. See. This. Because. You. Know you don't even have one here Michael Dunn no breaking game and how about the fact that we can welcome to the airwaves j.s. On our off. His me. Playing. A good having you both. You and. High growth or you're It's just weird that we haven't done this before it's it's a crying shame that we haven't done it until until right now but I'm very very excited Greece and I met each other I mean I think like 14 years ago we're so when you say 15 it makes it sound old fourteen's right yes I think your team just under 2 runs at the banner room festival which you have to pay money to attend its weird . Whole different thing San Francisco you guys have it right. Along the last. Good show for 2 and then and now by God you have done a lot and listen to a song like that I. So I'm having to think about keeping it together to have to host a show and not cry. But I feel like you're able to distill personal experiences down into something that that I can latch onto as someone who has not been through executive same thing as you have are there versions of these songs that are that are way more like oh my god grace Are you Ok and then you and then you're you're going through 234 versions and we get this thing where I'm like. Grace How did you know that I needed you to write this song about my life. You know it's so it's so funny I I went through a process of trying to write songs for everybody and the more I tried to make it for everybody the less anybody complimented me on my songs. Like it's so interesting like I would be like you know we all feel this thing don't we everybody and everyone be like that I don't really know I'm not sure. And and then if you get specific and if you're comfortable enough to really I don't know put the microscope on your own life it starts to feel intimate in a way that even if the circumstances aren't exactly your story it connects better for people a man I met you know that vulnerable and scary terrifying even the fame. You have to check out this record it's cool it's full of moments just just like that including this next song and that last one yes but I'm so happy to have you playing with me on it this is this is not our 1st jam session though we have Jim before I was at high cirrus over that yes it was anybody there for that and it was in like a building this is 2500 alcoholics maybe you are so right so this is our this is our this is our next jam after that or next year God made a 3rd jam the sooner. This is done is called Every Heartbeat. You're. Down black I'm calling to. Love you know and. We will lose you. Delve. In. Slowly. I want to make it. Exact. And you can.
