american officials now saying a bomb is likely to be blameme >> those intelligence officials are leaning heavily toward an act of terrorism as the cause of that crash, even though ot official investigation is far from over. more now from stephanie ramos. >> families grieve. bodies identified. all while egyptian authorities lead the investigation into what caused a russian passenger to break apart in the sky over the desert. all 224 people headed back home to russia killed. now, u.s. and british officials say new preliminary information shows it is more likely a bomb, not a mechanical issue that brought down the russian jet seen in this new video taken >> we must suspend flights to sharm al sheikh and advise against all but essential travel by air. he sayses in addition to halting flights, travel advice will also change after finding extremely lax security at the egyptian airport. the uk is now working with airlines to return the 20,000 british tourists still in the city of sharm el sheikh. >> terror groups operating in the region ve been working extremel hard to develop explosives that can be smuggled on to an airplane unwe do tected. >> the white house says the faa told airlines earlier in the year that u.s. aviation opopating intoo orr over the sinai peninsula is at potential risks. however -- >> there are no u.s. carriers that regularly operate out of the sinai peninsula. >> reporter: within hours of the crash, an isis connected group operate manage egypt said it was responsible. a claim initially disputed by but now the group has become the prime suspect. the voice and data recorders from the jet are being analyzed by russian, egyptian and other international teams. the voice recorder is partially damaged but investigates are working to get as allegiance to al qaeda because that was their big funder. with al qaeda the way it is today, isisi growing and having much more financial means, they've claimed allegiance to isis. a lot of people say isis has never had such a super strong hold in the sinai. it will be interesting to see what comes out through intelligence just how far their reach is. also in the past al qaeda groups have been able to take down hope flying helicopter. but to take down a jet through a shoulder fired missile, they're saying it'ss like a bomb of s se sort. >> it's not possible above 26,000 feet. they believe isis small plane sparked a huge search. that plane finally found by police and fire units. the pilot was killed. his aircraft headed to portsmith, new hampshire. a five-hour stand off in san diego caused chaos and the closure of the international airport. you hear the end to it all there. it began witit a domestic violence call. police were@met with gunfire at the apartment. nearby schools went into lockdown. no flights were allowed to land at the airport. the suspect eventualsly tossed his weaeans out of a wininw and surrendered. and in central california, a college student is it dead after he apparently stabbed four other people on campus. two of his victims were injured seriously enough to be airlifted to the hospital.. the attacker was shot and killed by police. students at the university of california-merced are in shock. they never expected something like this at their small rural campus. the motive is unknown. classes today have been canceled. more allegations following that staged suicide but a chicago area police officer. sources tell our chicago station that the widow anson of joe gliniewicz are under criminal investigation. it apparently stems from thee money that gliniewiczas embezzling from the police explorer unit he ran with his wife and others. he spent the money on mortgage >> g gniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the community. >> facing mounting pressure over the embezzlement, the officer murder. that rigged a massive search for him. donald trump is on the defensive after a controversial tweet about jeb bush [ gunfire ] >> reporter: police officers taking cover. as gunshots ring out, a whole neighborhood, including two schools, on lockdown. a shooter armed with a high-powered rifle, holed up in that building. 9:12 a.m. there was a 911 call, a report of domestic violence here at >> shots fired! code 11, barricaded suspect, apartment 610. >> rounds came out from a room or a bathroom in the apartment, through a door. nearly hitting the officer. so, we're talking within inches of hitting the officer. >> more rounds going off. we're going to need some shields or something so we can get out of here safely. >> reporter: the shooter's ex-girlfriend who lives in the apartment was not home. tom next door was hiding in his bathroom. >> i was definitely scared. >> reporter: darnell de palma stuck with h h dog, filming the scene from a balcony. 10:15 a.m., the faa ordered a full ground stop at san diego international airport. the shooter is hunkered down less than a mile from the approach end of runway 27. 1:30 p.m., a commotion, we're told it's tear gas fired into the apartment. an hour later, five hours after this standoff began, police report suspect in custody. titus colbert. shots fired, near mimies, but no injuries repepted. nick watt, abc news, san diego. all right. now to the other major headline we're following this morning. word from british and american officials that a bomb is likely to blame for the crash of the russian passenger jet in egypt. counter-terrorism officials say new intelligence leads them to believe it was more likely explosives than a mechanical issue. the uk is scrambling to get 20,000 of its tourists back home after halting flights in andut of sharm el sheikh. >> terror groups operating in the region have been working extremely hard to develop explosives that can be smuggled on to an airplane undetected. >> all 224 people on board were killed inhat crash. intelligence offffials have acknowledged that isis may be responsible as it has repeatedly claimed. new details in that phoenix to an unruly passenger. he is facing federal charges for threatening tooill passengers when he was refused a beer. the pilot made an emergency landing in wichita because of the incident on tuesday night. questions remain whether the woman an cruise accused of crashing into a homecoming parade is competent to stand trial. e 25-year-oldd woman has been arged with second degree murder. police say she drove into a crowd of people at the oklahoma state university parade last month. four people were killed and dozens injured. a psychologist hired by her attorneys say she's not competent to stand ial. >he stoto in chicago just gets more stunning. and stunning new twist in the death of that illinoisist police officer that attracted national attention. investigators say joe gliniewicz committed suicide staging it like a plurd. he was aboututo be arrested for ep bezeling thousands of dollars. now we're getting word that his widow anson are under criminal investigation. >> reporter: the manhunt, massive. choppers in the air, police going door to door, hunting for three men they believed killed lieutenant charlesesoseph gliniewicz. it began the morning of september 1st. lieutenant gliniewicz radios in saying he is pursuing three suspicious individuals. >> 10-4. did you need a second unit? >> 10-4. go ahead and start somebody. >> reporter: minutes later, police discover him dead. >> seneneverybody you possibly can. officer is down. >> reporter: the community is shaken. gliniewicz, nicknamed g.i. joe, was a husband and father of four. >> joe was my best friend, my world, my hero. >> reporter: hundreds of officers from all across the country attend his funeral. and it wasn't until october 1st, one month after lieutenant gliniewicz was found dead here at the scene that authorities revealed he was killed with lis own gun, but they were still investigating the case primarily >> good morning. >> reporter: investigators revealed it wasn't m mder at all. that the lieutenant staged his own suicide. they say he was about to be exposed as a thief for stealing thousands of dollars from the youth program run by the police department, spending it on mortgage payments, personal trips, gym memberships and even adult websites. >> gliniewicz committed the ultimate betrayal to the citizens he served and the entire law enforcement community. >> reporter: and police reportedly spent more than $300,000 on that manhunt and investigation. the family of lieutenant gliniewicz calls this another day of deep sorrow. alex perez, fox lake, illinois. and an alabama boy missing for the past 13 years has been locked in cleveland where he had been living with his father. julian hernandez was 35 years old when his mother reported him missing. she suspected he had been taken by his father butt took more than a decade to track him down after a social security number turned up bogus. the father has been charged with abduction. >> one former president bush says the other was served badly by aides. the eder bush has scathing critiques of some of the key figures in his son's administration. mr. bush says vice president cheney and donald rumsfeld were too hard line especially regarding september 11th. that book, by the way, is published next week. and donald trumps facing new criticism for retweeting a controversial post about jeb bush. the tweet shows jeb bush next to a swastika and in a mayor yaschy outfit. trump says he did not see the attached images. this has further angered hispanic groups who are pressuring nbc to drop him as guest host of "saturday night live." >> jeb bush promises to stay in the race. it's your voice, your vote. abc's jonathan carl caught up with bush on the campaign trail. hampshire. >> reporter: we got on board the "jeb can fix it" bus. he's hoping it will help fix his struggling campaign. when you look at where you are, i mean, new poll -- >> end's not near. >> reporter: a new poll out this morning, 4%. did yoyoever think you'd be e >> i don't even care. it's not relevant. >> reporter: how do you get this thing back on track?
