Many more injured. Eight terrorists killed. Seven of them by suicide vests, and we learned a syrian passport wawa found on the body offne of the atatckers. For us and starts us off. Good morning, matt. Reporter hey, good morning, paul l. A. Want toive you a sense of the chaos on this street. Right off the site of that most heinous of those six attacks you can probably see that tour bus right there, the black tour bus, that belonged to the eagles of death metal, now, that was where the theater was and after thehe siege w wt innd o o team heard about 12 explosions, gunfire and then people started to be lowered by rescuers, the dead, the wounded from the second floor to the ground floor. A makeshift hospital was set up at a cafe nearby and as that was happening people were running down this very street blood smearing their clothes panicked looking for some sort of help. Terrified fans fleeing the bystanders rushing to help the badly injured, carrying some by their airports and legs. Others dropping from balconies. The most devastating of the nights sixth nearly simultaneous attacks a small venue one of the most popular parts of the city. Inside a reportedly sold out crowd who came to see the american rock band eagles of death metal. The drummers brotker saying the band wbs only six sngs into their set when gunfire erupted. It was so loud, it was louder than the band and they all hit the stage floor and as we got up to try to evacuate, they saw men with machine guns just shooting anything and everything. Reporter shortly befor9 00 p. M. , four heavily armed gunmen opened fire outside the venue shooting at random. I saw people starting to panic. People were running away. Reporter minutes later at the assailants stormed the theater. According to survivors, firing their ak47s nonstop for a period of 10 to 15 minutes stopping only y reload their apons. Inside, hers finding places s hihi. Witnesses report hearing the gunmen shout allahu akbar. Police say more than 100 trapped as hostages for three hours. Shortly after midnight armed officers storming the concert hall. Amid the incredible loss of life, rescuers helping 40 people to safety before attackers among the dead insnse the theater. Three of them killed by their own suicide belts. Terrorists also targeting frances packed national stadium. Three explosions ringing out during a france germany soccer match. The crowd started moving. Everyone started panicking. It was impossible to leave. The trains were blocked. People everywhere. Its very stressful. Reporter like the other targets across the city, not a state buildingor popop hour Tourist Destination but bars and restaurants. This one a cambodian restaurant, next door, le carillon. I see police with guns huddled behind vans and then dozens of firefighters swarmg the scene blocking off the roads. Reporter casual friday evenings, people enjoying nights with family and friends turning to what would become a horrific scene. E. I realize she wasnt breathing. It was really awful, really aw ul. Reporter in a city known for its lowkey security response, this area was crawling with actual military troops and the medical response to this disaster last night was unprecedented. Paul and george. Okay, matt, thanks very much. Lets bring in brian ross. Now you found that passport. An important clue, a syrian passport found on the body of one of the attackers. And, brian, right now, they think theyve gotten all eight of thing thatters. Thats what the French Police going on for possible accomplices. There certainly were aecom polices. Who provided them with the weapon s weapons,s,he vehicles. O o big quqution, was this sosothing inspiredy isis and coordinated all inside france or was there outsi direction . The french president alleges it was coordinated outside. S of it planned outside and these attackers were sent in. They chose the site because the game between france and germany represented their enemyies and the rock band was a party of perversity. This appearsrs too the thihi major attack by isis in just the last two weeks. Thats right. There was the bombing of the russian jet, thebombs in beirut and this, a wave of terror. Isis claimed responsibility for all three attacks. Moments ago i spoke with a witness inside that bataclan theatre. You weren the first floor yeah, i was in the venue. What happened . It was crazy. I dont know what to say. We heard shots right we were in the middle of the concert, it was great, there was a good atmosphere, we were having fun and heard shots and like i mentioned before, i didnt believe it at first. I thoughtht it was a a ke. I ththght, whats g going on because i didnt see the shots. I just heard them and having never been under attack in my life, i couldnt i didnt think it was actually real gunshots and then all of a sudden people started screaming and thats when we realized with my two friends that we had to get out and we started ducking, you know, hiding behind the seats andetting down and luckily near to where weweere, there was a safafy exit we were there for about 30 seconds to a minute before opening the doors because i think they were outside in the streets when we got out and then the doors opened and somebody said its safe. We can get out and we all ran and it was before you got out what could you see of what was happening . Yeah, thats the thing. Because they started downstairs, viously because, youounow, they came in i think they came in with they ran a car into the entrance, im not sure, i think i heard that. They started shooting downstairs so i didnt see i didnt see the people shooting. I didnt see the, you know, the kind of fire that the kalashnikovs gives off, i suppose. I dont know. All i heard was a shooting but it was like continuous shooting it was like bang, bang, bang. How l lg did it go on . It went on for awawle. They were e st shooting. They just didnt stop. Obviously,y,ou know, they just wanted to kill as many people as ssible. It must have been so horrifying. It was yeah, its horrible. I was very chilled last night. Imean, i had loads`of alcohol. Im a bit less chilled today. I feel i swoek up this morning feeling, yeah, my you know, i felt i was yeah, i feel quite horrible. I dont know. Im trying to keep it all together because i t tnk i wont stopo im trying g maintain a cool attitude but i feel very distressed because i knew people there, some of the people i knew apparently somebody got shot, not people i know personally but people of people who know i mean, just various acquaintances. Its just sad that this would happen in a place where people come together to listen to good music, you know, its just its depressing. And whats it like in paris this m mning . I dont know. I havent been o o yet. Im going to go out later because i want to join my family in burgundy so i should be getting a train hopefully, being. Well see, but i havent been out yet so i dont know what the atmosphere is like in paris. I dont think its very rosy and happy. I think people are staying indoors. I imagine so. Ginny watson, thanks so much for your time. Thank you. So much hror to absorb right there. Theyre justaced withhuch aa devastating realitytoday, george. A terrifying night for the city of paris. This morning, theyre waking up in shock and people are watching all over the world. We spoke with several other survivors besides ginny who witnessed that carnage. We were walking and we heard a handful of gunshots. We heard a bunch of gunshots. Maybe eight to ten. Then there was kind of a pause and there were a few more. And police crouched behind like the doorways and trees. I dont think anybody really understood what was going on. You could hear the gunshots again and again, and we waited for the terrorists to reload again their weapons. We turn around and ran for our lives. There was lines of ambulances and ambulances running by. Somebody saw a body lying in the street. I saw a couple of people wounded. I saw this one girl with a wound in her thigh. So, everybobo at that point lying on the floor to escape the bullets. And we just stood there in silence. I pray for the victims and for the families. Most of them died meters away from me. Some of them on me. So i pray for them. Somber words there and abcs terry moran is on the streets there. theyre telling people to stay indoor, correct . Reporter that is true, paula and, in fact, a word that comes to mind here in paris is a word you never associate with this city, subdued. Traffic is like many people have it seems. Those who are out are speaking in quiet tones and even it seems this is a city as you have heard in shock and here on what on any ven is one of the brightest and liveliest of the streets of paris there are pools of blood, dried blood on this street and the memorials have already begun. In the middle of all this, parisians nevertheleses have a sense this is a grim expectation that has been fulfillll. The attacks on Charlie Hebdo and elsewhere earlier this year set this city on edge waiting for the next blo to fall. It has in the most horrible fashion. And yet in the middle of all of it, they are pulling together. There was that Movement Last night online to open the doors, your own doors of your homes to people who needed to stay who couldnt get across town given the chaos here and even here on this street. A little bit earlier man brought out a pianono and started playing just to try to calm the nerves and the situation, bring a note of beauty and peace to this scene of carnage, george. Okay, terry, thanks very much. A you said second major attack in the last ten month, want to bring in our chief Global Affairs correspondent martha raddatz. We heard the french president this morning blame isis, declare war. Reporter he did. He said this was an act of war and when faced with war, the country m mt take appropriate decisions. It was a reminder when bush said we will have a global war on terror shortly after 9 11 so you have to wonder what the approach of the french will be. Will they approach this militarily or from a Law Enforcement angle . Right now the french had been conducting air strikes in syria, them. Will they do more . Will the u. S. S do more . The response iss what we are truly watching today. The french president seemed to reach a conclusion this was directed and prepared overseas. Yeah, he madthat 125i789 too as well, planned from outside with outside complicity which an investigation will establish. So, who planned this . Are they in syria . Are they in iraq . We have al baghdadi in iraq in mosul that city he has held well over a year a a fallujah ere, as well, sohere are definitelyy heads of isis but whether they were involved in this, we just dont know. We have eight individuals, sort of a pack of lone wolves perhaps or there was some sort of command and control. Someone from outside and the french clearly think that at this point or i dont think the president would have said this. That its somehow outside is somehow coordinating and telling those men to do what they did. What we do know, martha, isis has been gaining strength, strongholds in sya, ststngholds in aq. You were receneny in afghanistan. Isis gaping strereth there, as well. Huge escalation across the region and beyond in afghanistan, the commander there problem there. Theyve seen them pop up around just inspired, whether they want to be part of that hideous team of isis and think theyre winners, thats a question theyre asking themself, as well. But iraq, as well. I mean, i was over there in january of 2014 and the ambassador there then was so concerned about isis and six months later they moved in and still hold that today. Thanks very much. Lets go to the white house, jon karl is there and, jon karl, we saw the president come out shortly after the attacks and say we would do whatever it takes to help our oldest ally. Reporter absolutely and all of the although the president wouldnt say who was responsible, even today the United States, white house notot ready to say they believe it was isis but clearly believe it was a terrorist attack and you heard from the president , a strong statement of solidarity with the french people. Terrorists, its an attack not just on the people of france, but this is an attack on all of humanity and the universal values that we share. Those who think that they can terrorize the people of france or the values that they stand for are wrong. And after thaha atement, jon, the president was able to seek with the president president hollande and now the president heading ovseas to deal with tpis issue of isis. Reporter thats right. First stop on thatrip will be turkey where he is meeting at e g20 with other european leaders. President hollande was supposed to be there. That meeting will go on without president hollande but the topic, number one topic was how to deal with the battle against isis and in the statement from the president and in what we are hearing from adminintration officials since that statement,t, you hear resolve to help the french not just with the investigation and the aftermath of this attack but clearly the implication here is that the United States will help in going after whoever was responsible for this attack. Okay, jon karl, thanks very on egg, security is being ramped up especially at sports arenas and stadiums. Lots of College Football games will be played across the country today and nfl stadiums will be filled and dan is in times square with that part of the story. Hi, dan. Repororr paula and george, good morning to both of you. Cities across the country are boosting security in the wake of that horror over inaris including this city, americas largest metropolis. A place that knows terrorism all too well, new york city. Here in new york, the nypd deploying extra personnel and its counterterrorism unit. Critical Response Teams ready in the citys most visible targets. Not only will you see an increased uniformed presence with Police Officers with heavy weapons, theres also we work with our federal partners, the fbi and the jot Terrorism Task force. Reporter with one of the targets in paris being a packed stadium, sporting venues across america will be enhancing security today. In los angeles, the famous rose bowl increasing its staffing and asking fans to leave their bags at home. The nba and nhl putting its teams on high alert. But the nfl saying it actually wont be changing protocols as sundays games approach. The League Spokesman saying, security at our games is always at a heightened state of alert adding all nfl stadiums are already equipped with metal detectors. You cant view it as a nuisance. This is the world we live in now and if you have to take precautions, if you have to go through screening, thats just part of the process. Reporter with the attackers in paris hitting so many socalled soft targets like a restaurant and concert hall, the nypd and fbi will be working to keep popular areas around this city safe. You can expect heightened security at Tourist Attractions and on public transit. The tragic evenen in paris we established a counterterrorism overlay. What that is, its heavy Weapons Service officers. They go to highprofile and sensitive locations throughout the city. Reporter it is important to note, very important to note that the department of Homeland Security is urging americans not to panic. Issuing a statement in which they say, we know of no specific or Credible Threats of an attack on the u. S. Homeland of the type that occurred in paris. Paula, over to you. Very important note, dan, thank you. Authorities in the u. S. Are closely monitoring the s suation in paris. Abcs senior justiti correspopoent Pierre Thomas is in washington. And, pierre, here in the u. S. , weve been just as active in tracking down potential terror attack, havent we . Reporter yes, paula, the fbi has dozens of investigations under way in all 50 states. Many surround suspected isis sympathizers and found a specific pool theyve reached through social media. In the last year alone more than 70 americans have been arrested for somehow trying to support isis, some accused of trying to join isis, others arrested for plotting attacks here at home. Most arere young. Most are men. But there have been some women and even teenagers have been in terms of different shakeniateing style is there a between here and in paris . Theyve been aggressive in monitoring radical websites and social media. One tactic not often utilized in europe stings where fbi agents pose as terrorists and officials have been extremely aggressive by stopping americans from going to syria in the first place. Trying to recruit 90,000 that is the latest on weather. Back to you. Rob, thanks very much. More from paris coming up. As we look at imagess from paris and arorod the world last night. This morning, people standing with france in this moment of mourning and horror. Yeah, and this is isis third claim for responsibility attack. At least 127 people killed. Were hearing that hundreds more wounded in the second major tv attack inside paris this year. Isis has claimed responsibility. This morning were learning that a syrian passport was found on one of the eight terrorists and, george, this is the third major attack isis has claimed responsibility f f in just the last couple of weeks. S. And the french president hollande this mororngeclaring war on isis as paula said, im George Stephanopoulos her with paula faris for a special edition of Good Morning America. Paris under attack and, paula, this is an entire country right now in a state of emergency. Terrifying images all across and abcs matt gutman is on the scene of one of those attacks in paris. Good morning, matt. Reporter hey, good morning, paula. We have breaking news right now. We are learning americans were in fact injured and a least one of these attack were not sure where, it could possibly be in that theater behind me that was packed with up to 1500 people when the terrorists stormed it, that was part of a group of eight suicide attackers essentially wearing suicide vets, armed with ak47s and grenades attacking six separatat locations in a perfectly coordinated tack. Oneeas near the stadium of france, the other was in a very, very busy restaurant district attacking people just having dinner and, of course, the other was right here at that theater where the band eagles of death metal was having a concert. People taken hostage there. At least 80 dead in that site right behind me and what a horrific thing it must have been, there are still dried blood in the streets around memorials here, a makeshift hospital was set up right behind me and hundreds and dozens of people were lowered down from the second floor. Now, french authorities are still trying to find those responsible saying that there there. Somehow they have mobilized 1500 additional troops fanning out across thihi city andndhe country and for the first time in years here in france, we are told that curfews might actually be happening. French people are told to stay off the streets as much as possible right now. George. Okay, matt, thanks very much. Lets bring in brian ross and, brian, we just heard matt say the search for accomplices right now, the French Police believe they got all eight attackers but it could have been a huge network. Absolutely and they believe it was planned from the outside that was carried inside france with people who are likely french. Thats some conclusion already reached by president hollande. He said it was planned from the outside. It is isis and hes declaring war. Exactly squarely fingering isis as responsible and isis in the last few hours issued statements of responsibilityy in arabic, infrfrch, in russian and in english, their social media propaganda going full team. And say were part of the operation. They identified eight brothers and they talk about the targets they chose, the game, the soccer game because it was their enemy, france and germany and the rock concert, they called that a party of perversity and say this is only the beginning of the storm. Its notven the beginning as paula just said. This is now the third attack in thats right. The alleged bombing of the russian jetliner in egypt, the bombing in beirut and now this in each case isis has claimed responsibility. Ay, brian ross, thanks very much. Eyewitness who is on the scene nene the bataclan theatre. And were now joined by paris about imene ahmed who was an eyewitness. Us. You were near the stadium. What exactly did you see. People were running everywhere, running away and they were like, okay, we need to move. We need to hide. I just take the hand of my mom in the kitchen behind the wall. Just everywhere just hiding. Did you see the shooters . Everyone was just afraid and crying. No, i havent seen them. I was just afraid and running away with everyone. We just heard the shooting but we were close enough to hear the shooting and the bombing. How long did the shooting and bebeming go on . What exactly did you hear . We heard the bombing for the first time, it was like 30 sends, the second time it was probably ten minutes. And we were just waiting and hearing the shooting and everyone were just screaming everywhere and crying and people were just like, okay, were going to die, we were going to die. It was like, okay, dont worry, we are not going to die today. The attack is in the batlan. We are not there. Dont worry, everything is going to be okay and we were just waiting and the police came. They were knocking on the windows and saying, just stay on the floor, stay on the floor, dont move. Dont move then three bops explode and this is the just shaking. We were like, okay, re going to die with these walls seriously and we were juju waiting till t t end. This bar was right next doooo to the bataclan concert hall where the suicide bombers were holding the hostages, so how long were you under that table as you waited for the police to go in . We were in the bar the place came very, very quick. It was very fast so i stayed in the bar from 9 40 p. M. Till 5 30 a. M. So like nine hours in the bar. My goodness. That must have been the most terrifying moments of your life, imene. Yeah, that was very scary, very long. We were just trying to help the people, giving them our phones if they needed to call their family, whatever they want, we give it to them. We help the peoeoe, just help them and whatever happened its okay. Dont worry, we are going to be they were all bleeding everywhere. That was really awful, seriously. That was scary. We want to bring in abc news consultant Matthew Olson former head of the National Counterterrorism center and first and foremost is this something new isis is doing . We keep hearing this is the third attack that theyve claimed responsibility for in just the last couple of weeks. It seems theyre going global. This does appear, paula, to be a significant escalatfact, they were responsible for this so this is capability. Were trying to formulate a picture, as well, of who these shooters were. Were hearing there was a syrian passport found near one of them but what does it say that witnesses are claiming that french . Well, there is a mix here so you have the possibility that they were directed from operatives inside syria and iraq but it appears quite likely that individuals radicalized french individuals in france, in paris were obviously carrying out the attacks themselves and this is really the scenario that weve been so concerned about for a number of years because of the number of foreign fighters, thousands from western europe going to syria, many of them fighting with isis and returning to their home countries in a position to carry out attacks just like this. Nightmare scenario, matthew . Absolutely and its the one that gives u. S. Counterterrorism officials the most concern, as well, the possibility that individuals could actually come back to this country and carry out a similar type of attack here. Matthew olsen, thank you for joining us. Which is why u. S. Officials have tried so hard to block people from going to syria in the first place. Much more from paris coming. Right now to rob with the weather. That potent system impacting the Pacific Northwest dropping south in california. Snow levels lowering. It has been closed indefinitely. So much concern in paris across france right now, a state of emergency, 1500 soldiers have been put on the streets to protect additional sites and moments ago i spoke with the klugman. Mayor of paris, patrick klugman, mayor klugman, our hearts are what can you tell us about the scene in paris right now . Thank you. Well, the situation is really very weird, i would say, very strange, very unusual. We are facing unprecedented events in paris. We have the state of emergency declared, which is the First Time Since the algier gentleman algeria war in the early 60s, all schools are closed. All games, flea markets, concerts, all are closed. So its like a mourning morning i would say. The city is a bit stopped and we are under shock. Eight attackers have been killed. Are you confident all the attackers are killed, and what do we know about possible accomplices . We are not totally focused at the moment on the inquiry on the accomplices, on the person responsible. As you know, of course, isis claimed for the terror attacks, but we dont know more about who are the actors, who are the criminals, because we are really counting and naming the dead persons and the wounded persons in paris. I would like to add also that this morning we had emergency meeting in paris with all the persons responsible, the deputy mayor, the district mayors, et cetera, and mike bloomberg, former mayor of new york was here with us this morning, and it was a huge sign of support for us to see physically that america is standing with us, and, of course, we know it, and we heard president obama yesterday, but its great sign of solidarity and its so important at the present moment. Mr. Mayor, thank you for joining us this morning. Thank you. The president so strong yesterday talking about standing with our oldest ally. But also, you know, its so frightening because how are you supposed to fight this enemy, at least for the shooters in that concert hall theyre all wearing suicide vests. I spoke with the president about isis and hes already drawing fire from the candidates running these comments. And thats the strategy youve been following but isis is gainingstrength, arent they . I dont think theyre gaining strength. What is true is from the start our goal has been first to contain and we have contained them. What we have not yet been able to do is completely decapitate their command and control structures. Weve made some progress in trying to reduce the flow of foreign fighters. George, republicans are already seizing on the words contained isis. This is going to be a phrase if this turns out that, in fact, isis was responsible for these attacks as the president of france has said, if that turns out to be the case, those will be words the president will likely regret having said. Its not the first time that he has said something about isis that has come back to haunt him, of course, it wasnt all that long ago he called isis the jv team, that is something clearly the president wishes he had not said. But its not the only line of attack from the republicans. Theyre pointing to the president s plan to allow an additional 10,000 Syrian Refugees to come into the United States. A number of the republican president ial candidates are saying that should be stopped. Heres what ted cruz tweeted not long ago. He said, we need to immediately declare a halt to any plans to bring refugees that may have been infiltrated by isis. On the democratic side a debate is scheduled for tonight.
