" norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) all through my life i had is little thought of what if? thth question has en hanging in the backckorwood thomas' mind sce 1944. it has to do with the future he imaged for himself and joyce durrant -- the woman in this picture - who he fell in love with during world war ii. ( norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) she was on this pedestal like a goddess untouched. pure. unattainable. the two met while thomas - a member ofthe 101st airborne division -- was stationed outside of london during wod war ii. thomas can't quite remember exactly how long he and durrant dated - but they spent e eugh time together for him to know that what they had was special. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) all i can say is it was long enough for me to become smitten. for me to decide that this is a girl that i want to marry and want to live with. but unfortunately -- love wasn't enough while a war was going on. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) and it was shortly before the normandy invasions where all of sudden instead of seeing her the next week, i just never saw her again. after the war -- thomas returned to the unitededtates - and sent letters to durrant asking her to come to america. but she declined. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) i went on and later met and married another woman. a good woman, who helped my mixed up head get straight. and raise of course 3 fine children. thomas admits -- he had a wonderful life with his wife before she passed away. and it wasn't until after her death -- that the thought of him anandurrant's fututu managed to creep up back in his mind. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) i feel that had she come that marriage would have been a success. but their future together remained only a thought - until a few months ago - when thomas' son, steven, received an email from a man in australia - who happened to be rrant's son, rorort. turns out - all the y on the other side of the world - durrant, who now lives in australia -- has been thinking similar thoughts and had her son do some research online to see if thomas was still alive - and willing to talk after all these years. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) it was a great revelation. now -- more than 70- years after their last meeting - the two are finally seeing each other again on a skype call. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) and this is joyce? (joyce durrant/ long-lost love) yes i'm re. the call l lted for more t tn an hour. the two joked talked about how much they have changed over the years - ( joyce durrant/ long-lost love) do you remember when you looked this young? (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) that's the one that would wink at the girls. (joyce durrant/ long-lost love) yes you did. what they have been up to for the last 70 years - and even reminisced about their time together. (joyce durrant/ long-lost love) you were a lot of fun. i remember that you were a lot of fun. and while this is the first conversation the two have had in more thahahalf a century y it isn't the first time they have laid eyes on each other since their last meeting. (joyce durrant/ long-lost love) i have a picture frame on my bureau and i say good morning to you every morning. but after this skype call - they no longer have to rely on pictures. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran) that we're able to say hello eye to eye, this is a wonderful situation. though - skype hasn't quite fixed everything. (norwood thomas/ world war ii veteran)n)he only one big problem is that i can't take yo in my arms and give you a squeeze. jessica rae: " coming up.... i'll tell you about two christmas controversies... first up... the story behind a christmas display in a new york mall that had shoppers threatening a boycott. "the brilliant fall l color in ourlandscapes is a magicaca transformation that happeneneach year. and the science behind it all is just as intriguing. each fall as the days shorten our deciduous trees and shrubs begin this transformation. the plants produce less of the chlorophyll that gives leaves their normal green color. in fact, the chlorophyll starts breaking down revealing the underlying pigments of yellow, red or orange. at the same time these plants begin to create an abscission layer between the leaf and stem. this barrier prevents the sugars produced in the leaves from moving dodo into the roots sunny days followed by cool nights without a hard frost mean more sugar and better red, orange, and purple fall color. genetics determine the color each plant tends to produce in fall, while weather and the plant's health influence if and how intensely the color will be expressed. i'm melinda myers, check out our website for this and other gardening tips. jessica rae: yesterday was a busy one at the state volleyball tournament in cedar rapids. central lyon beat gehlen in five--for those highlights head to our bsite siouxland maers s t com. ex walker has a full recap of the rest of the action. alex walker--the warriors are back at state for st their third time, and it's the first trip since 1985. the warriors opening tournament play against second ranked kuemper catholic. second set, knights won the first, kylee christensen lays down the hammer. warriors lead it 13-9 in set two. later in the set brittni olson comes up huge with a kill, warriors take it 25-23 to even the match at one. kuemper won the third but in the fourth, olson with the perfect placement, set tied at 23 a piece. she had 12 kills. but on match point amy adams finishes it off 3-1 the final. sb-l ends ititseason th a 28-4 record. brittni olson--"i i ink it's a grere thing. it's baby steps and next year hopefully they'll be here again representing sergeant bluff again." alex walker--"in class 2a, top ranked western christian starting its quest for a state title, against st. albert. second set wolfpack up 1-0. erica feenstra elevates and executes, but wc still down 8-3. later in the set, kaira moss with a monster swing. nobody's stopping that. a match high 15 kills for her. third set now, wolfpack looking for a sweep, feenstra making some big plays for that wc attack, 15-9 western christian. and on match point it's emily van ginkel sending the wolfpapa to the 2a semis withth 3-0 win western keeps on rolling. kaira moss--"i love the intensity, it's so much fun as our team. we're a family and we came here to do well and we did good today." alex walker--"the wolfpack could be on a collision course with unity christian in friday's title match. the knights ening the tournament against sumner- fredericksburg. inthe second set, unity down 1-0. we're used to anna kiel's power, but how bout the touch? the tap puts the knights up 14-10. later in the set it's kiel again this time on the block. unity takes set 2 27-25 to tie up the match. but they lose the third and struggle in the fourth. kiel a 23 kill performance to keep ththknights withinintriking distance, itjust wasn't enough. j jen seehehs finishes it f the cougars shock unity christian, the knights go home early. patt timmermans--"we fought. we gave it everything we had. things didn't seem to roll our way quite as much as you'd hope to and i've gotta give credit to sumner- fredericksburg, they played an awesome match." alex walker--"unity christian ends its season with a 36-5 record. from cedar rapids, alex walker, abc9 sports. jessica rae scott: it's time now to check on your forecast... ott:good morning siouxland. it's a cold start to your day as yeyeerday's storm system pinwheels away to the northeast. we're looking at temperatures in the 30s to start things off today with breezy northwest flow to the wind at 15 to 25 miles per hour and some gusts over 40. a wind advisory is active today until 6 pm. we should at least have sunshine through most of the day as you can see on the how siouxland honored our veterans on veterans day. plus here's what you can expect " " away to the northeast. we're looking at temperatures in the 30s to start thing off today with a breezy northwest flow to the wind at 15 to 25 miles per hour and some gusts over 40. a wind advisory is active today until 6 pm. we should at least have sunshine through most of the day as you can see on the dayplanner as we get to a high of 50. still ahead in our show.... we'll look back at how siouxland honored our veterans away to the northeast. we're looking at how siouxland honored our veterans on veterans day. plus here's what you can exexct coming up on gma on next years pasture leases... paul hughes has more.
