" anytime an athlete takes the field there's a risk of injury. in contact sports like football, the risk is higher given the nature of the sport. but beyond concussions, torn ligaments, or broken bones; no athlete believes the game, more specifically the field they play on, could be giving them cancer. " it's kind of a fine line, you don't want to be chicken little and cause a panic when there is no reason to panic, but at the same time you don't want to put your head in the sand and ignore something at the same time too." said dr. sam schimelpfenig, a avera medical group mcgreevy. the issue? most artificial turf fields are littered with these little black dots, the crumbled up remnants of recycled tires. it's a product designed to help with drainage and also cushion the field of play. for years, no one really cared what was in these rubber pellets until a soccer coach at the university of washington noticed a growing trend. she started compiling a list of friends and former players who had developed cancer. "all of a sudden the list grew exponentially!" said amy griffin. griffin first showed her list with komo news in seattle last may. since their first report, the list has grown from 27 names to 165 players diagnosed with cancer. half of those players are former goalies, the position that is most likely to accidentally eat or come into direct contact with these trivial pellets. "i finally said ok what's in this rubber?" said griffin. that's the question of debate. crumb rubber is a mixture of various recycled chemical compounds and previous studies have shown there are known carcinogens found in each pellet. but the lab reports haven't proven the amount is enough to be harmful. so the question now becomes, is the sport worth the risk? turf fields and crumb rubber infill are found and used everywhere today. in sioux falls we have the big three: howard wood, kirkeby-over, and bob young field. "certainly we would never put our student athletes or opposing student athletes at risk. we did our research and we feel very confident with the product that we have." said josh snyder, the athletics director for the university of sioux falls. snyder says he and his team did their homework when the university invested in a new turf field this summer. he is aware of the health questions surrounding artificial field turf but found his own issues with the alternative. "truthfully there are many studies that actually say that grass, natural grass, is more harmful because of all the pesticides and the products that they put down that that may actually be more harmful than the rubber that's in here." said snyder. administrators are the ones making the decisions, but what do the athletes think? we spoke to football players at the high school combine this spring and nearly every one we spoke with said it's not a concern to them. they trust the schools have done their research and have their safety in mind. "i think they have the knowledge about it and if it was really that bad they wouldn't have us play on it." said levi schoonhoven, a football player for tea high school. usf football coach jed stugart says this isn't the first time field turf has been called into question. he's seen the reports but throughout his coaching career, most of it on turf fields, he can't recall a single case where a former player developed early cancer. "you know there are so many factors that can go into a lot of these things it's hard to put it on just a field." said stugart. pulling you child from football or soccer is probably too extreme but dr. schimelpfenig believes, like coach griffin, there are enough names and diagnoses to warrant a closer look at the issue. "could it just be coincidence or something else is different, it's not really that rubber turf at all? maybe it's something else that that they got exposed to? it's hard to know. there is so many variables you just can't say for sure." said dr. schimelpfenig. infill but it is the most common mountview high school in minnesota just installed a turf field, but instead of using crumb rubber... the high school has elected to use tiny plastic pellets instead as an eco friendly alternative to the rubber fill. an option more schools may utilize as the debate over the crumb rubber grows. jessica rae: the russian government is fighting back against accusations of a state-sponsored doping program during the last olympics. the world anti- doping agency issued a report yesterday... claiming the doping was systemic among russian athletes during the 20-12 olympics in london.. the w-a-d-a says the doping was condoned by the russian government and even covered up by russian secret agents.. those findings have triggered an international criminal investigation and demands the russians be stripped of all their medals.. which could mean american athelte alysia montano could get a bronze medal she placed fourth in the 800 meter race in 20-12, the same race the russians swept in. am: sometimes you wonder why are you crying? and it's just such a natural human emotion to feel a loss. jessica rae: the agency is also calling for russia to be banned rrom international games including next year's olympics in brazil the russian track and field federation has been given until the end of this week to respond to the report. jessica rae: brazil is mired in recession and a corruption scandal that has led to a financial crisis. it's not the ideal scenario, as rio prepares to host the 20-16 summer olympic games. but the mega- sporting event has in many ways protected rio from the gloom hanging over the rest of the country. reporter shasta darlington has more. "just nine months before the games kick off, the expansion of rio's international airport - full speed ahead. building 26 new gates - and not just for the 2 million passengers expected during the games. ( luiz rocha/ president riogaleao) the legacy that the olympics are going to leave will attract more tourists and travelers for the future, he says. thanks to the games, rio is a city under construction. once a source of frustration, now a financial lifeline for many of its residents. snarling traffic, but also transforming working class neighborhoods like madureira. ( eduardo paes/ rio mayor) the olympics, for us, always meant a chance to change our city, to make it more integrated, to make it better, so we got lot's of opportunities, took the most of it. in a recent interview, the rio mayor said major benefits include expanding public transportation and revitalizing the seedy downtown. shasta darlington/ rio de janeiro) this used to be a virtual no-man's land underneath a freeway overpass well now they're turning it into a cultural center for visitors to the olympics. it's here that the futuristic museum of tomorrow will throw open its doors next month - despite an economic crisis in brazil that has forced rio to stick closely to its olympics budget. mostly financed by the private sector, the government can't afford to cover cost overruns. many problems remain, notably sewage-clogged waterways that have yet to be cleaned up. and, despite improvements, alarmingly high levels of violence and crime. but even rio's once crime-ridden favelas are seeing benefits from the games. with a beefed-up security helping attract tourists. sara junger rents homes in the hillside favela of vidigal. there's no running water the day she shows us around. ( sara junger/ albergue da comunidade) you have to come here with a certain flexibility, she says. there are problems that we residents can't control. but they still expect full occupancy during the olympics. from visitors looking for a great view and a bit of adventure. jessica rae: heelan kicked off the state volleyball tournament last night. find out if the crusaders could win a game at state for the first time since 20-12. scott: stay tuned for today's forecast... jessica rae: ally in his corner this election season. u-f-c phenom ronda rousey has endorsed the democratic presidential candidate she told maxim magazine she supports sanders because of his stance against large corporations. rousey says if sanders loses the primary, she'll vote for a third party candidate. last year, donald trump implied rousey liked him as a candidate, but she eventually shut that down. jessica rae: two daily fantasy sports companies have been told to stop accepting bets in new york state. attorney general eric schneiderman issued cease and desist orders to draft-kings and fan-duel. he said the companies are engaged in illegal gambling under state law. schneiderman drew a distinction between daily fantasy sports companies and 'traditional' sites which compete for bragging rights over the course of a season. both companies slammed the decision in statements released after the cease and desist order was received, insisting their games are legal. jessica rae: later today fiveve siouxland teams take the court at the iowa state volleyball tournament, but last night, heelan got the ball rolling. here's chris with the action. chri palmquist--"good morning everybody. since the heelan senior volleyball players were born, only once in their lifetime have the crusaders not qualified for the state tournament. last night they opened up another tournament run in search of their first state title since 2007. the 8th ranknk crusaders taking on number three waverly shell rock. 1st set heelan's allie cooke starts things off with an ace!
