"so it's been a very, very interesting life," said rabb. richard spent time in the navy and the air force. enlisting right after high school, he says he's greatful to got to serve. but, it was his experience in the cold war and vietnam that made him the man he is today. "when i first got out of high school, i midly, i was probably too much trouble and it was probably the best thing that ever happened, that i went into the navy. it didn't take too long and they and i've been respect our our flag. i'd definitely do it all rabb. little did he know, he would eventually dive into submarine school where he would train to drive nucleur subs... unique military for duty in the cold war, the u-s became involved in the vietnam... and he was put on standby for both. "at that time, we was just... a deterrent is what we were. if things were needed we were there and we were there on a nuclear sub. obviously there wasn't that much that we could do there that was going to justify, but at the same time the cold war was going on and we actually had 41 submarines that were built for the cold war and we were just a deterrent because nobody knew when things were going to change with russia," said rabb. decades later, richard has started a new fight... to help other veterans get the benefits they deserve with the help of american legion in sgt bluff. he also feels its his mission to be a support for the men and women who've been through what he has. richard says, "cause there's a lot of guys that have a lot of stories to tell and they really don't tell their families, they really don't tell anybody. it just kind of hangs in there to where it's burried in their mind and a lot of times, a veteran talking to another veteran is just a lot easier to do. you both know where you come from, you've both been through the training and it just makes a lot of difference." richard keeps the memories of the men he fought with close to his heart... and his mind.
