Favorite cyclone standout. Tim good evening and thank you for r r joining us tonight im tim seaman jenna and im jenna rehnstrom. Controversy is brewing in south dakota over a law passed by lawmakers that would affect transgender students. Tim if signed by governor daugaard, the bill would require students to use restrooms based on their sex at birth. Abc 9s bria bell brings us local reaction. Bria tim and jenna, if its signed by the governor. South dakota would be the first state to pass a bill addressing transgender students. Some local College Students dont want that distinction. Theyre against the bill because they say, its just unneccesary. Not only are we unwilling to accept people as who they are, we are bigoted and rude the university of south dakota offers a safe place for students with varying genders and sexualities called spectrum. Group say theyll be upset if an anti transgender bill passes in the state, which will force students to use restrooms according to the gender they were assigned when born, not the gender they idtentify with. For me, i do not neccesarily know all of the transgender terms or how to really talk about it in a way that wouldnt offend someone, but perosnally im angry at this bill, says satterlee. It can be a challenge for any child to find their way and alisha says the new bill, which was created to protect someones physical privacy, could make that process even more difficult. Especially for the transgender community. I think if we really want to protect the youth of south dakota, we have to allow for no discrimination, says satterlee. Really, everyone uses the restroom. Just to use the restroom, says bachmann. Jordy bachmann is a senior at usd. He was declared female by doctors at birth, but idtenifies as a male. He says the antitransgender bill would be a downfall for everyone. Its very bigoted. Were going to lose a lot of opportunites like financially. Were going to lose funds because its a discrminatory bill and were going to lose federal funds for education. Its not just hurting transgender students, its bachmann. Both students believe, the bills basis has to do with government officials intolerance of the lgbt community. Youre really just hurting someone because youre uncomfortable with whats happening, says satterlee. Bria south dakotas governor will be meeting with the center for equality before making a final decision on the bill. Reporting live in studio, bria bell abc 9 news. Jenna on cam also from south dakota. A bill that would have raised the states sales tax to boost teacher pay, stalled on the state house floor this afternoon. Shes with us sunshine, happiness when shelia lynch days with her daughter, tereseann. She she looked with her young son. And how she made everyone else feel. 13 18 she had a smile that lit up a room. But what she cant forget. No matter how much time passes. Is how tereseann felt in the days before she died. 8 32 she was pertified. She would tell me i cant have a life again. Hes always going to be out there. She had just helped her daughter leave her abusive husband. A man family says had been battering her strangling her. 23 55 36 stuffing socks in her mouth while he hit her so that no one would hear her scream. They got a restraining order. Found a secret location to hide tereseann and her son. But it wasnt enough. 7 54 he was stalking her and we did not know it until the trial took place, he quit his job to the point he had all day long to follow her. Knew where she was living. They found that the law wouldnt do much. 00 03 33 a protective order is what my daugthers murderer told me it was in person, he said to us, its a peice of paper, its my 5th one i know how to work the system and get around it, it means nothing. And on veterans day. Outside of a kidnapped her. Then shot her to death. 9 40 i cant go back and change that, but i can help the victims that are out there. Shelia lynch says she came up with what she thinks is a solution for women trying to break free from abusive and obbessive relationships. Gps monitoring. 00 00 45 my daughter would have been saved, she wouldnt have been killed. It would work like this. If an officer was dispatched on a Domestic Violence call, he would ask the victim and abuser a series of questions to determine if the relationship could become lethal. If the assessment deemed problems would continue. A judge could put a gps monitor on the suspect. And give the victim the reciever to let them know if that person violates a protective restraining order. And notifiy police if that barrier was crossed. Just last year it seemed her idea had gotten some traction. Govenor branstad invited her to be part of a press conference pledging his support to the idea. Even posting to social media now is the time to act 19 00 i was so excited, to me it went i have the govenor of the state of iowa on my side. He is going to represent a bill and put into place everything ive been speaking out about. But when it came to getting that action. 28 06 i kept asking when are we meeting, i called and to me a stab in the back. I ended up with a very negative view of politics because of it. She feels her daugthers story got lost in a political game. 20 18 it was embarrasing, humilating but its not going to stop me. The Govenors Office says theyve asked the department of Public Safety to spearhead new legislation this year that would address increasing minimum sentences on repeat domestic abusers and use electronic monitoring in certain situations. They said the govenor wasnt available for an interview on the subject in a statement said quote gov. Branstad s appreciative of ms. Lynch sharing her daughters heartbreaking story last year. What happened to ms. Lynchs daughter was an absolute tragedy. To that end, we hope our legislation will prevent further tragedies from happening to other iowa families. The bill we are proposing this year is very similar and we are hopeful this bill will gain enough support to get passed by both the house and senate. Thats little comfort to lynch. Who says until something changes in iowto protect other woman in her daughters situation, she wont move on. 5 35 im not quitting until we get iowa to wake up in ames Nikki Davidson tim medicaid deadline now 12 days away more than half a million iowans are about to have their care switched over to private outof state companies.
