about if that would be money well spent. abc 9's bria bell tells us why local police say they need a little more help on the streets. bria: jenna, during this week's city council budget meeting, sioux city police chief doug young asked to add two additional positions to the department's traffic team. council members will now have to decide if there is room in the budget for more officers to be on payroll. "officers are just getting pulled thinner and thinner and thinner," says sheehan. on wednesday, city council members deliberated how the city's budget will be spent. sioux city police chief doug young took the opportunity to request two more positions for the department's traffic unit, causing a divide amongst council members. officer sheehan says he supports the cheif because the current lack of officers is taking a toll on the boys in blue. "there are alot of shifts that have to be back filled because they're short shifted and so they have to hire back and pay someone for overtime to come in sheehan. discussions to transfer some law officials from the drug unit to traffic came about, but sheehan says that's just not logical. "i would be very caucious about taking away from the efforts that we have put in place to investigate and prosecute the drug crimes because a lot of crime that we deal with directly relates back to drug related crime," says sheehan. as council members are set to vote on where the city's dollars will go in early march, council members dan moore and rhonda capronre in favor of the possible new addidtions to the police force. "we need to step up our traffic enforcement," says moore. "i believe that we need to be proactive not reactive... a lot of things have changed in the city, we're getting bigger, we're growing and we're going to need more police and fire," says capron. both dan and rhonda say they believe the budget will be equipped for the add ons... and officer sheehan says no matter what, "we will do everything we can to go out...24 hours a day, and keep the can keep them," says sheehan. bria: city council will hold another budget meeting on febuary 18th and will vote for a final decision on the additional positions in early march. reporting live in studio, bria bell abc 9 news. jenna: police in west omaha spent the afternoon outside a residence where a hostage situation was taking place. according to police, swat investigators reported to the scene and eventually were ableo get one person out of the home. there is believed to be an armed person still in the home, and there's still no word on how many people are being held hostage. authorities have been negotiating with the suspect since early this afternoon. jenna: march 5th is the nebraska caucus organized by the state's democratic party. and with that political event date so near, both campaigns have opened up shop in the cornhusker state. from the abc station in omaha has more. " campaign spotlights turn to nebraska as democrats are preparing to caucus in three weeks on march 5. there are all kinds of visitors at bernie sanders' new nebraska office near 60th and pine.sanders' state director said 200 volunteers have signed on this week, joining five field organizers and four paid interns. "(we've been) knocking on doors, making phone calls, talking to nebraskans," sanders' campaign state director mackenzie ewing dozens of clinton supporters opened her campaign's new nebraska office near 40th and vinton. "i think our supporters are as excited now as they've ever been organization that we successful," state director kane miller said. offer specifics on staff or volunteers but said they'll have presence. "we were going to work hard to earn and this is proof positive that we're living up to that," miller said. both teams paid leaders moved to the metro from iowa after their caucus. they said nebraska's system requires outreach. and metro action at north and dakota valley. but we'll start at east. chris the black raiders and stars have played some great games over the past few seasons including a couple of substate finals. inbounds, denten porter finds the big man, he knocks down the jumper from the elbow to stretch the lead to 9. after gross got within six...kalvin warner with the nice baby hook off the glass to stretch it back to 8. this one would go down to the wire...but porter goes coast to coast...and the cardinals finish off the upset, 47- 43. chris: believe it or not it's coming up on a decade since the south sioux girls have won a state title. the lady cards have been to lincoln each of the last three won a game there or a championship since 2008. alex but coach molly hornbeck has this year's squad positioned to make a a run at the trophy. the cards are 19-1 and undefeated in the central time zone. alex south sioux looking for its 12th straight win tonight on senior night. opening make the lay up. later wynot leads by 16...but sophie noecker drives in hard and gets the runner to fall. in the fourth...cortney arkfeld spins past the defender and the win 55-41. alex and in t boys game, the blue devils looking for the sweep at home. chris: the norfolk boys have been a tough bunch to get a read on this year. a week ago, the panthers trounced fourth ranked fremont by thirty. alex
