rehnstrom. it has been two years since a homer nebraska family lost a loved one in a drunk driving accident. tim today (wednesday) the man responsible for their loss, learned his punishment. abc9's jess plue was in dakota county district court for the sentencing. jess: russell roberts junior was sentenced today to a minimum of 10 years in prison .. this comes after roberts was found guilty of one count motor vehicle homicide of tiffany schmitt and two counts of driving while under the influence. tiffany's family was at the court today...anxiously awaiting to hear robert's sentencing. "this happens to other families, this doesn't happen to our family " said tami allison. two years ago, everything changed for the family of tiffany schmidt after she passed away in a horrific car accident. the driver involved, russell roberts junior, was drunk driving and speeding which caused him to lose control.. and overturn thevehicle. roberts was sentedced to a minimum of ten years for tiffany's death as well as two under the influence. "today we feel like we can finally put this to rest and remember the good times with tiffany and not have to relive the accident everytime we walk into this building" said allison. whwhe the accident and a majority of the triaiais behind them, and just justice served...tiffany's family says they will always struggle with the loss... "he gets to keep living life while our life sentence started seven- hundred and thirty- eight days ago when we lost tiffany" said allison. family and friends say they're satisfied with the judge's ruling and hope people will take drunk driving more seriously, after what happened to tiffany. "this is the best we could have hoped for and the judge saw that he wasn't remorseful up until today" said allison according to the national highway safety administration, twenty-eight people die in drunk driving accidents eachday ...and every two minus a person is injured in a drunk driving crash. reporting in studio, jess plue, abc9 news. tim: schools were locked down as a precaution in norfolk nebraska this morning after a man robbed a local hotel. the suspect walked into the hampton inn with a gun and took an undisclosed abount of cash he's being described as a 5 foot 9 male. anyone with information is urged to contact norfolk's police division. jenna: online swap sites are becoming more and more common, and so are scams taking place on websites ike craigslist. at's why one local law enforcement agency is stepping in to protect siouxlanders. the le mars police department is now offering the police station as a safe zone for internet transactions. even going so far as to offer services such as identifying other parties invovled in the transactions and verifying whether an item being traded has been stolen. le mars sergeant jay king says the departments willing to do whatever is necessary to keep the community safe.
