im tim seaman jenna: and im jenna rehnstrom the man and woman involved in a bad car crash with a stolen car this afternoon... have died from their injuries. tim: witnesses say the car went airborne on 25th street as it flew over a steep hill. we have more details tonight in our top story. jenna: here's what the car looked like when it finally stopped after hitting a tree. the red nissan altima... that was reported stollen last thursday... flipped on its top after striking two other cars. the accident happened near the corner of 25th and morgan streets on the northside. the 34-year-old driver and his 28- year-old female passager had to be cut out of the car and were rushed to the hospital. police say witnesses report seeing the car driving very fast down 25th street when it rammed the front of an s-u-v that was backing out of a driveway. sgt. scott hattig, scpd says, "there was no pursuit we did have witnesses who saw the vehicle come up over the hill they went as far to say that it caught air, was airborn coming over the hill it was traveling that fast, so i can't even begin to estimate how fast they were going right now." the names of the man and woman killed aren't being release yet. a woman and child in the s-u-v that was hit wre not seriously injured. tim: sioux city police say vehicle thefts are on the rise.... especially in the last few weeks. for the year, 207 cars and trucks have been reported stolen... thats 4 more than last year with two months remaining in 2015. tim: the thefts have been primarily occuring within the morningside area and northside of the city. police says they have a couple theories on why vehicles are such "we have people who have been stealing vehicles for financial gain and then we're also having people stealing vehicles for joyriding purposes," said detective jeff harstad of sioux city police department. the sioux city police department reminds citizens to lock car doors, park in well lit areas, and keep valuable items hidden. jenna: northwest iowa voters headed to the polls today to elect mayors and city council members... tim: our deborah souverain....was there for the results of the woodbury county election. deborah....i'm guessing...bob scott is still our mayor? that's right. mayor bob scott ran unopposed in this election. he told me wishes he had a challenger...but he'll gladly take the free win. mayor bob scott...was elected to another four tonight. he collected...two thousand..and 87 scott...says he will not run for re-election....so during his last term...he wants to focus on creating more opportunities for younger generations. "i think that'st the way we're going to attract and keep young people in this community and we've done a bad job of that for about 10 to 12 years around here. we need to do the things that young families find attract and we need to continue to work on economic development very hard.we need to have jobs in this community for young people," said bob scott, sioux city mayor. also, on the ballot was councilwoman..rh onda capron. she was re- elected to her seat on the city council ....with 77 percent of the vote. rhonda...who garned...one thomas venesky collected...554 votes. "the first four years were an honor and the next four years privilege to we are doing," said rhonda capron, city council member. "we have a lot of good things happening in sioux city and i am just happy to be a part of it." rhonda says term....she wants to continue working on major recreational projects...like cone park... and the possible larson riverfront park. about 47-thousand registered voters....but less than 3-thousand people cast a ballot in this election. woodbury county auditor pat gill says, those numbers weren't suprising because he wasn't expecting a large turnout. reporting live in studio deborah souverain abc 9 news. . jenna: the majority of members of the omaha tribe of nebraska are giving their support for legalizing marijuana. tim: in three separate ballot measures today, he tribal council asked for input to help them decide if they should pursue legalizing of marijuana. the majority of voters were in favor of all three proposed questions. of the 650 voters, 59% say they were support the recreational use of marijuana on tribal land. 78% say they would support its use for medical purposes. and 67% say they're for allowing the omaha tribe to grow industrial hemp to sell. tim: the vote does nothing to legalize marijuana now, but gives the tribal council the go-ahead should it choose to work with the federal government to legalize it in the future. jenna: voters in sioux center are not overwhelmingly supportive of plans to expand highway 75 to five lanes through town. in a ballot measure today, 56% of the close to 1,600 voters said they would support the city moving foward with expansion plans. but, that fell short of the 60% needed to pass. now, city planners will have to wait for possibly another vote in the future. the city wants to expand highway 75 from three lanes to five to allow for increased traffic and more safety and also to esthetics. but, many people in town have concerns about making that road through town even more busy and the road getting to close to homes along the way. "there's always confusion with people, pedestrians, trying to cross our highway and we feel we can make it safer, and that's what this project is really about. the enhancements that we've looked at have an led lighting system that flashes on the inside and the outside lanes. it also has some that it's embedded in the roadway, so when into that crosswalk somebody is in there" city manager. the expansion project most likely would've buying some homes to tear down. here's a look at a decided at the polls. sheldon voters approved a 2 % increase in the hotel/motel tax, money used for economic development. thattax not at state limit of 7 percent (252-77) votes in onawa approved the implimentation of a hotel-motel tax 7% but barly 201- 184. 4 buena vista county communities were looking to extend the use of 1 cent sales tax, storm lake lakeside rembrandt alta all approved an indefinate extension. tim on cam and a push by a citizens group to make sweeping changes in city leadership in incumbant mayor myrna heddinger won re-election with 53 % suport and will serve her 4th term... 2 of 3 incumbant council members also won reelection. in iowa house dist 5, charles holz of lemars was elected to fill the term of chuck soderberg who recently retired. holz was not opposed. jenna: it was a standing room only crowd at the state capitol today. people were lining up to share concerns over governor branstad's plan to tranfer the state's medicaid program over to managed care organizations. there's a committee of lawmakers that's been set up to oversee the privatization of medicaid. they heard concerns from the community today. one of the top concerns voiced... the timeline to get everything done. there are 560- thousand iowans on medicaid and the roll out date for the new privatized plan, is january one. kelsey 1:04:33 we get a little nervous that when too much is transitioned too quickly, mistakes get made, errors get enrollment packets for medicaid recipients are starting to be mailed out... but so far provider networks aren't yet in place. there are only 39 business days between now and the start of the new year. tim: today democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton made her way into the hawkeye state. she spoke to supporters at a town hall meeting in coralville earlier this afternoon. the presidental hopeful then held a townhall meeting in grinell where she highlighted the importance fo raising the minimum wage to 12 dollars an hour as well fixing the v-a and making sure veterans are getting proper care. " the va does a lot of good for work for a lot of good veterans. but it has systemic problems. those have been revealed and it's shameful" "we have too many veterans who have been left out and denied the care that they need. i am in favor of fixing it and being really tough about fixing it."" clinton also focused in on gun gun reform if elected president. tim: there's no agreement in the great debate over g-o-p debates. plans by campaign staffs to present the networks with unified demands for debate terms unraveled monday night, as president obama took a swipe at the republican squabble. stacey cohan has the story from washington. " " a last minute effort to unite g-o-p candidates on debate reform is an epic fail. the carson campaign organized a sunday night meeting for candidates to create a letter of demands to debate media sponsors. it didn't happen. donald trump plans to negotiate on his own. (donald trump, (r) presidential candidate) i don't really care that much. i want a room, i want a podium and let's get going. john kasich, chris christie, and carly fiorina also bailed. colorado senator cory gardner, who just endorsed marco rubio, calls the debate drama a distraction from the real issues. (sen. cory gardner, (r) colorado) ultimately it's not going to come down to the insider games about whether the debate rules are right. it's going to come down to the american people even president obama weighed in, taking a jab at republican's debate complaints from folks who boast of great negotiating prowess. (president barack obama) when i talk to putin, he's going to straighten out.just looking at him. and then, it turns out, they can't handle a bunch of cnbc moderators. they'll get another shot at the debate stage in one week at the fox business debate in milwaukee. i'm stacey cohan reporting. jenna: immigration is not something that comes up in local politics very something that comes up in local politics very often. but an expert on the subject is making it his mission to inform people across the country on both sides of the topic. lukas voss joins us now with more on the trip to sioux city. lukas: jenna... more often than not there is a misunderstanding about who immigrates and what immigration means. prominent journalist and director roy germano was at briar cliff tonight ... screening two of his films to shed light on the issue. i had a chance to catch up with him.
