I go here I don't was. Kind of a welcomed everybody listening in on Magic 979 of them in our c.b.s. N.b.c. Fox Sports affiliates from coast to coast and those watching on m.t.v. Double a.m.p. Dot tv as well as I guess everybody on the moon and also those on hotel television are its own are so I don't know if you're really a big fight fan but I'd be asleep the whole boxing world look they have a like the boxing police right the the boxing commission Yeah I do if you think that I imagine there is a commission for most of the most sports I get well there should be yeah yeah with it there certainly should be well the problem is there aren't but anyway we saw the big a couple of years ago as the Dana White announcement of. Floyd Mayweather and Khana McGregor whatever when we saw what happened there and conveniently Floyd Mayweather is people were reportedly and Floyd himself reportedly were making bets all awake at the south end of the Las Vegas strip at a place called the m And that was conveniently right before the fight nonetheless I mean hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars whatever the case and needless to say the over and under I think was I want to say it was 10 and a half rounds and so the fight just went the distance of under 10 and a half rounds and so needless to say there was a lot of mystery as to the over 900 and some of the things that were allowed in disallowed whatever whatever it's just a bunch of hype it was an exhibition and that was one of those made for t.v. Type of programs so the reason I bring this up is because now Dana White who is the head of that United are the u.f.c. Right so Dana White just announced literally minutes ago he confirmed that he has an agreement with Floyd Mayweather Jr to do something together likely of course in 2020. Just doesn't really matter we're we know what's going to happen now in response to a popular radio show quote It's true we said at the Clippers game we started talking and we literally got a deal done right there on the court and if things play out the way. Floyd and I think they will I will probably sit down with Al Haymon Mayweather as manager in March and get a deal done on paper if everyone if everything goes our way Floyd and I will be doing something in October or November of 2020 now of course that leaves the details wide open for speculation especially considering that white fully intends to get involved in the boxing world yes in the boxing world and of course in the promotions game now details of that venture also have been very scarce and white has talked at many different influential people in the boxing world and basically like I guess not really boxing for dummies but it's kind of like the how to book you know what I mean I mean how do you launch in that space so what are we talking about here we're talking about one organization seemingly already bilking millions and who knows maybe billions of dollars from an audience in the in the mixed martial arts arena and now we're going to see him jump into the boxing arena Why is that is it just a I don't know is it a big money grab but what are we talking about here now let me tell you why there's no details on anything because there is no deal that's to do sat next to each other at a game and we're like hey we should do something together oh yeah you do stuff yeah I do stuff too oh I'd like to do some of the stuff that you do cool let's tell everybody that we're working together Ok let's do it that's exactly how that conversation went on that that's why there is no details and they're like you know maybe October or November. But guess what you missed your opportunity again to preface your statement has actually say yes so there I was I don't I hope with Floyd Mayweather is kid and we made a deal. That's exactly what this is and it's absolutely I Q q. Said Yeah but I know and I was. Just saying. This to you guys at the side of the to sit there and watch a game and just hey we're we're 2 people sit next to each other there's but I'm sure there's probably going to be some pictures of us let's come up with a ridiculous press release that tells people nothing well you know you and I can sit here and write a deal out on a napkin on your side or we can show it up to the camera for everybody watching at home Hey Look buddy I mean here's the deal that I've got what do you think because they say most of the big deals are reportedly done on the back of a napkin or something right exactly that we do that that's not go to what I hop I will say what is freely. It will make a deal right exactly how that will be my press releases ace freely does not usurp. And that will be those people. That will tell people more than this stupid thing like news flash sun will rise tomorrow it's ridiculous why need a press release for 2 guys that like a sport it's like if you're sitting at a ballgame and you're right next to the guy you have not you know he has a hot dog and said Oh you like junk food too yeah I like junk food cool let's make a deal in October. Well let's make a deal I'm going to dip my hot dog into your not just as I'm going to call it a day. Unless I mean that's exactly right all right but that's it what we're talking about what thing what they're you didn't tell me anything was it just Hey Dana White you haven't been in headlines in a while so you're just going to sit next to somebody else and just you know on wrestle in this I think I think it's more so Floyd Mayweather Jr because that's the guy that seems to always have to have some kind of you know we have money grabs Well I mean he knows a little bit about that I suppose I don't know but then we also have media grabs right you got to grab the media you got to lasso the media right you know you get a you know swing that rope around your head or whatever it is I mean here in Las Vegas as everybody to watch here I got to watch out I don't have a car with that rope but the point is you know people are doing everything they can to get themselves in front of the media in any way shape or form and this is a guy that has so much money and so little to do that he even has a billboard out on the freeway sitting his record at 50 you know being Floyd Mayweather Jr and of course we have to scratch your head at number 50 because that was really a fight that should never of you know counted in the real world because that was the economy Gregor in my opinion fires Yes well it's the same reason why o.j. Kept going to court because because he was started I'm not relevant anymore yes it's time to go back to court because that's where I was the most relevant. Exactly it's all the same thing so it's garbage in garbage out so I got to tell you here the fight capital the world I don't really even pay attention to that kind of press because that is no press and I do have a fighting a fighting story when we come back after our 2nd break because we're going to read We're going to a little bit of a high school prep report we're going to talk with Eli Thompson will become back as joins us typically on Tuesdays or Brittany lie back for an encore pour our performance don't go to our folks lots more to come here the circus back in a few minutes. I welcome back everybody listening in on i Heart Radio Scott Tyler c.b.s. N.b.c. Head back sports affiliates from coast to coast and those listening in on Magic 97 that I am f.m. Here in Las Vegas and also a big welcome to everybody streaming us live on M.T.V.'s w.a.m.p. Dot tv as well as hotel television and folks we are here with Eli Thompson our 12 year old high school prep report the psychic got to tell you he's a 12 year old encyclopedia thanks for coming back and speaking with us Eli thank you for having me yes sir hey listen I got a question for you now I'm going to read kind of take you away from the the schools from the modern days the St John Bosco's had to take you away from that for a minute because I want to ask you now whether you're in middle school or high school or a college what do you believe in your generation what do you believe is the biggest problem with student athletes and social media. The biggest problem with student athletes and social media is they get to the social media and they just look at social media they think they're the best player out there because everyone says they're amazing Well once you get to college colleges don't really care about how good you are in high school they want to put the best players on the field no matter where you came from they're going to put the best players on the field so your quarterback on top of it so so you kind of speak with a little skin in the in the game here. As a quarterback even at your age group because there's a lot of pressure I don't care what age group you're in especially in today's time because of all the extra visibility from social media do you feel it do you see some of your teammates get caught up or anything like that in the whole social media hype and nonsense even at your level a lot of kids do get to it because colleges are also doing hooked up into younger kids a lot younger kids are doing that just last year Michigan offered a scholarship to a 7th grader and. They get to college already and they're not even a freshman there at 7. But believe all 13 year to get and recruit is a scholarship offers coming from a good Big 10 school that's pretty impressive I got to tell you I wish that opportunity would have happened for me but then again you know back in my day we had rabbit ears on top of the T.V.'s and we had transistor radios glued to your head so we didn't really have that but I guess from your standpoint how do you avoid the distractions in the peer pressure from all your fellow players. One you just don't get social media. Social media accounts which is recruits don't really recruits do have social media accounts which I think are a big mistake. They get hooked into social media. If players don't have social media and they don't think about college they're going to be better off because at the end of the day it comes out down to how well you play in high school football and if you're focusing on top you're not going to play that well Ok so let me ask you another question take the differences between maybe the inner city kids versus suburbia kids versus the different classes that are out there of the kids in other words the different financial classes that they are in and maybe the prepare pressure for example for some of the inner city kids to try to kind of get out of whatever situation they may be in you see them saying what is the social media. Desire or I should say what are the social media demands is this something that the inner city kids for example have to really focus on a little bit more versus those that are not the same situation what are your thoughts on that. Suburban kids a it's they are they're not 100 percent. But the inner city kids that's their goal they're going to do it no matter what so most of them might not have a Twitter but kids in the suburbs they will have a Twitter they think something they're really good doesn't matter what they do on social media they can still do a scholarship which isn't true. Right well the reason I ask is because sometimes we have we have economically challenged families that really don't have a lot of resources but they need the eyeballs maybe for their kids to get a little more visibility and so where I was going with this wondering if maybe some of the some of the disadvantaged families would be using the social media outlets maybe to get the eyeballs out there a little bit more for the child so let's just say they happen to be a great football player in the say in this case right do you believe that that is a bona fide avenue for these kids to get that extra exposure maybe they don't have the resources as some of the kids in suburbia. No matter what happens if you play well and high school football you will get scholarships no matter where it's from I think it could help but it's got to really be it's got to be tight you can't make one little mistake on social media Riyad would agree because social media could be it's actually and I Social that's kind of how I see it. There are people that I know that have 34000 friends but then I turn them say well how many do you actually know well I know a lot of a but really when there's a time of crisis how many of those people really step up and those are your real friends that's what I'm talking about so my point is at any age group social media technically is antisocial that's kind of how I view it what do you think about that I agree with that 100 percent because socialist kids talking face to face and social media is like text thing but you're not really talking to anybody it's tweeting and stuff like that it doesn't really. Unless you're really doing it well it doesn't really help me let me ask you Do you pay attention to college basketball Yeah. Did you happen to catch any of the breakdown that Purdue put on Virginia just yeah those the surprise we because very generally. Virginia was. A miss I'm not mistaken. When I remember this parent this also goes back to last year when Purdue had the game stolen from them by the referees against Virginia I mean Virginia because of the year before with the Baltimore County lost and the 16 versus one right the number of the true number one not that was the overall number one I mean that was a payback for for Purdue against Virginia just a lead for gee you know look you're going to score 40 points and we're going to score 69 and you're going to like it and we're going to drop 13th reason you in your own game because they always touted great defense how do you feel about that victory by the Boilermakers. That was a big victory I think a lot of people expected to be close summit's but to produce one summit set the Virginia one party won big they won big they got out to a big lead early in the 1st half they were up 20 sets to 9 at $1.00 to $70.00 at the end of the half and they just kept putting a lot. In the 2nd half and they won big that they went on about. A 140 run with like 7 minutes left to go to really see all the game. Right and you know what also happened I mean over in North Carolina the North Carolina I call the chapel hill billies I'm Thomas Duke guy it was a happy day for me yesterday Matt my undergrad won and of course the arch rival and nemesis of my graduate school they also got absolutely pummeled and that was the 2nd worst loss in the history of Carolina at the Dem dome and I'll tell you what that was very exciting they were absolutely hammered by Ohio State's. Very exciting I believe that was Ohio snow wasn't it yeah they got killed by Ohio State last it was number said they're still a good team but they still get pummeled it wasn't even close can they argue when it's in the 2nd half it was a ball out it was at halftime. It was close Kamal's closer than at the end of the game but in the Senate half you want to see pulled away there were only down by 4. With halftime at halftime so coming down that 2nd half Ohio State played really good basketball and u.n.c. Played really bad. All right so let me ask you a question Is the Big 10 in the a.c.c. Challenge is the big 10 that good or is the a.c.c. That mediocre because I think in the Dhamma that is pretty good they killed 22 top 10 teams last night they beat. They be put to produce by 30 and Ohio State beat North Carolina by 25 I know that they were both top 10 teams. Right it seems like I really believe that the Big 10 is that good end and really they've been that good for quite some time it's not some kind of an accident these guys are good and that's why from top to bottom boy they are tough to get through when it comes to tournaments time you know what I mean yeah I also ended up being forced by Sit St to Florida State was Number 17 in the nation I don't understand why you Indiana isn't getting more love no undefeated they better be right come in that's ranking time but I'm sure there will. Eli I'm sure they will I listen Eli thanks for joining us again that's Eli tops that he does are a high school prep report at it right now it's every Tuesday and guess what he's doing a great job and we're going to be back here in the circus in just a few minutes don't go to where lots more to come. Or be in southeast Alabama and we're also down in the greater Miami market folks who are everywhere and remember everybody that's watching on t.v. That's doubly m.p. Dot tv and hotel television you too can see as basically everywhere around the United States of America. That would be the. United States of America so are there any other junk that. You know I had a meme and a meme for social media and it was a picture of a steak right in the steak was of course in the shape of the us a lower 48 and appropriate it was it was the United States of America. These United States Yeah yeah that was that one that was posted for a very specific day in March it's steak and something day that we can't really talk about right now and I'm sure for some people out there you may know what we're talking about and some you certainly may not just be scratching our heads saying I don't know what the heck they're talking about anyway we did start off with boxing with that whole Dana White thing in the 1st and I want to pick up back in boxing here and I want to talk a little bit about a journey the journey from the state pen. To the Hall of Fame and how Bernard Hopkins became an icon inside and outside the ring now people know him of course as b. Hop but this guy remember in 1908 after serving nearly 5 years of a strong armed robbery conviction Hopkins was leaving the Pennsylvania say Correctional Institution at greater for as he was being processed and about to leave the warden saw him said something to the effect of him and we'll see you again in maybe about 6 months. Like story pretty term Yes And yeah you're going to be back right talk about it to her system buddy that's really bad but then I mean to that I mean how can stop and said defiantly. I ain't never coming back here now not only did Hopkins never come back not only did he turn into one of the greatest boxers who ever lived not only was he elected just yesterday in his 1st year of eligibility to the International Boxing Hall of Fame but he became a role model for thousands upon thousands of young people across these United States either while the arrow thank you Okok and really became a beacon of hope Thanks for the downtrodden thank someone who turned his life around and reminded everyone that it's never too late to do the right thing I mean his accomplishments as a boxer get this as greatest They are almost secondary to the man that he turned into as he kept the vow he made the warden as a 23 year old in 1988 with no job no education and little hope and at the end of the day this guy finished his boxing career at 558 in 2 with 2 no contest 32 doc outs and his records are unbelievable He successfully defended his middleweight title twice did I and not against Americans either he became the undisputed middleweight champion at 46 years of age in 4 months and 6 days on May 27th 2007 Hopkins defeated Pascal at the Bell Center in Montreal to win the lineal and w.b.c. Light heavyweight titles becoming the oldest man in boxing history to win a world title so why are we talking about this I mean obviously his induction to the International Boxing Hall of Fame is a big deal but this is for all those people out there that again if you're driving home saying I'm stuck in a dead end job I'm stuck doing this I'm stuck in 3 hours the traffic is in l.a. Folks that's exactly what happens the fact is you don't have to be. Stuck in that situation and you take a guy like b. Hop who was basically destitute in 1988 and you look what he did as an adult and after spending years in prison 5 years in prison Mind you this guy said you know what I'm not doing this anymore I'm doing the right thing and I'll tell you what we're going to do in fact we have a commitment from Bernard Hopkins to come on to the show we just have to get the scheduling done so that would be one heck of a conversation and it will be for sure when be hot does come out to the sports circus I already have those accomplishments. Breaking George Foreman is record of being the oldest to win a championship so the breaking that record is is fantastic because he turned around and beat it I think 2 more times he beat his own record because he just kept winning even even into his late forty's just when we didn't win and it's great to see be inducted and congratulations to him right and you know having multiple classes as well I mean you know there are guys that will win in 2 or 3 different weight classes I mean this guy he won in so I I want to say he had actually won in his lifetime I'm not really sure what the total isms condoms off the top my head I think he actually won 8 times he won 8 different belts or 8 difference between classes and belts and so forth and that's nuts man think about the fact of moving up in weight or down in weight in the 1st place and then trying to fight either of those really really faster people or fight those really big and strong people that are you know certainly a lot larger and you know it's hard to move classes and do that you know to me. Yeah and it seemed like he could do it with with ease being both middleweight and light heavyweight he said I guess it seemed like he could just pick up and lose the 15 pounds in a week and and jump classes now that's crazy and you know also by the way inducted into that into the the class for the International Boxing Hall of Fame was also really good guy from the box to world Sugar Shane Mosley as well give him a big round of applause as well. Shane earlier this year was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame I went to that ceremony with Rocco Kelly from the sports angle and that was I was a really cool event but talk about a humble guy just a normal cool guy you know and it's great to meet somebody like that who who is an absolute champion and is a winner in life and then to have them also be down to earth and not in any kind a way just just pompous in you know you know those pretentious people who think who think they're the champion of the of the world who think at one point they held 8 a title from all of 4 different types like like be hot as I mean it's one of those things that but he can actually come back down and say look I was here before too and I think having that that that criminal record in the beginning and having something to essentially overcome I think that probably is what would help him stay humble I think you're right because a lot of times people will start out on a particular path and if they have a lot of success and they haven't really faced anything any sort of adversity it sort of taints them you know to make. Oh yeah yeah it's one of those things that you have to have something almost terrible to overcome for you to propel that greatness and it seems like he overcame his criminal record and then just swung with that moment from the rest of his life right where you know those those guys that have that experience in in losing fights you know it's funny I I went to the was the Las Vegas City championship football game for high school I had mentioned earlier in the week and I went to that Saturday and I ran into Sean Porter and Sean Porter lost to Earl Spence in a fight recently but Shauna had had a couple of losses number doing an interview with Sean Sean's one of those guys that really has his head screwed on right now and I saw Sean over there at the at the football game and just a regular guy like you and me and everybody else is listening to this and I love the fact that Shawn was just one of the guys he wasn't trying to be the superstar the 2 time heavy Earth 2 time. Champion the world etc said it has nothing to do with that Shawn was just a regular guy cause you know what that's what Shawn is outside the ring and there's a lesson for all those people that need to remember stay humble humble listen just because you won something doesn't mean you're better than anybody else in the game of life you know what I'm talking about. Understand and I think the executioner really is a really good name for him walking out of prison like that I think I think deserves every bit of being part of the Hall of Fame Congratulations. A b hop world well and Ed even outside the rain just sit and talking with him again I believe that they wrote the story right I'm going to credit Yahoo Sports for this one they really did a good job in writing the story on him and for all the contributors I think you guys actually got it right and I don't really say that very often because you know I usually have some controversial something with the story but this is one of those ones that certainly they did a great job folks we're going to be back here at the circus in just a few minutes lots more to come don't go anywhere. Coyote's dot com This segment is actually supported by them they've been a partner of the sports circus since the very beginning and of course we support them as well so make sure you check out their baseball their. Upcoming basketball they're going to be at basketball by the way and make sure you check out their soccer teams in their volleyball team's greatest situation I tell you what 40000 students go to the College of Southern Nevada and for everybody sitting in cold weather right now let me tell you something when 65 degrees here it is 12 degrees in your spot for example up in knowing lead and trust me this weather looks a hell of a lot better than where you're at There's no question. All right and a big welcome to everybody listening in radio Spotify in our c.b.s. N.b.c. And Fox Sports affiliates are coast to coast of those listening on Magic 979 f.m. Here in Las Vegas and everybody watching at home on m.t.v. As well as hotel television thanks for joining us all right so I have to ask you a question or if you watch a basketball game I know you and I don't watch a lot of basketball but sometimes we kind of turn out and if we see something happen that is as blatant as the day is long and other words that was a follower that was something else to turn over. Don't we yell at a t.v. Or don't we do something don't we call somebody and say Did you see that that was ridiculous exactly I write it down on a piece of paper and I bring it to one of the radio shows that I do. Ok All right so certainly I think you may know where I'm going with you and I'm going to exactly where you're going I got I got a buddy I got to ask you how in the world does a basketball player meander their way down the court dribbling at a half a mile an hour right and it's it's remarkably uninteresting and then they get across the half court I barely buy 10 seconds and then they pick the ball up basically wearing it on their hip take a few steps to start dribbling again how the heck does that happen. By the way no traveling charges called Nothing no traveling no double dribble nothing nothing called and if everybody out there is wondering what we're talking about. Why aren't across the half court line and you can see the guy defending him staring at the ref because the rebel is watching him the entire time doing that and what was due to what was funny is you could see him pick the ball up things like yeah he just got a whistling and walking with the ball and August start to dribble the ball again and the Federals like what the heck is going on here look at the referee How does that happen you know it happens folks it happens because some of these games of course have that influence from the referees if you know what I mean and that's why we had Tim Donaghy on the show oh just a few weeks back and Tim of course went to prison for fixing games right and so how come 1st of all if if a call wasn't made. How come that referee was not chastised for it oh and by the way that bucket counted and needless to say I think there was just a couple of point victory but the point is look they scored on that possession and that could have been a game changer in a tie game if it was a one point game or something like that but why should he get special treatment I mean come on just the same guy that was running around on the court in his socks on top of it and it is real good terrorists from the 4 letter network I want to cite him he quotes and says that Le Bron is quote arguably the greatest player in the history of the n.b.a. Was a man I'd be the greatest player in the world to me because. If I feel he does break rules and make any foul I want to I be the greatest 2 can't touch me also I get to bring stilts. You know what I think mc hammer came about 25 or 30 years too late would Can't touch this but the fact is this guy he porch chops everybody he hooks is way into the low block every time he travels all the time and I'm saying I'm miserable drive to the hole the point is this guy cheats left right and center in my opinion and I can't seem to understand why the league tolerate this and I think you know what it is is because look the n.b.a. The ratings are down 20 percent I mean why are the numbers are so skewed now not necessarily I think there's a lack of star power there's a lack of leadership there's a lack of high basketball i.q. Guys out there in my opinion and there's a lack of appeal to the mainstream audience I mean even the guys on television pick your favorite newscaster sportscaster talk to your friends or your family your colleagues people are a lot less interested in the n.b.a. These days you know what I mean I know exactly what you mean and I'll tell you why I'll tell you why right now that's because all they do is talk about this kid this guy this guy this guy who is allowed to just walk out every once do I was surprised that he didn't just put it under a shirt and was like everybody else. Why didn't he just do that that would only they don't last Funny that's what I mean like he's playing it like he's a g.d. Harlem Globetrotter I mean it's really no dick Ulysse out here and that's the issue is everybody just wants to talk about him nobody wants to research any actual superstar nobody wants to actually watch a game that he's not a part of I can guarantee that that clip of him traveling and probably breaking 3 different rules all at once got more views than that entire game did that night. Well you remember what also wasn't called was the carry of the ball right so it's kind of like is the thing of all right and he's turned his hand over on the ball you can't do that then oh that's. That's. Just. The King of the fender when he when yes he's got his arms wide out and all he's doing is he's doing that where you are you bend down and you put your put your arms straight out like you are going to block what he was like right you right what what are you doing like what he looked over at the raft and he said are you going to call this like you can see his mouth move right say that are you going to call this and as soon as he realized that he wasn't going to call it the defender went right back into it like Ok cool that I'm going to have to play even better right it's a girl saying it's embarrassing that the league has resorted to this I have to say that look look I'm a I'm a fellow do guy like Adam Silver but I don't like. The direction the league has gone since Adam Silver has been in charge I'm sorry Adam you know I don't care whether we're connected on social media or this that the other whatever I don't care if you're a fellow Deukalion I don't give a damn all I know is the league in my opinion is going backwards said you have been absolutely in charge of what's going on yet because they. Know that's what they want they don't they want you in n.b.a. Mascot they want to change the silhouette of the n.b.a. To be in him and they're in the n.b.a. Is going to pump up and make Le brick as as big as they possibly can and gives He's their cash cow right now and until somebody else starts calling themselves the greatest of all time then then they're not going to be able to say anything because when you tell him and they're all going to they're all home up on the Le Bron versus m.j. That's it that's the entire conversation that's been in be a for the past feels like forever that that this is the only conversation that anybody who's into the n.b.a. Can ever act right well the bigger problem there is that look. Lubricates only won 3 out of 9 Jordan has won 6 out of 6 Yeah End of discussion and that's that proverbial Mike drop that everybody talks the rate is down is real comparison count there is no comparison how do you get to the finals 9 times and only win 3 of them that rating or a self is everything you need to know about this guy because if he was that great of a leader than they would have won 7 out of 98 out of 99 out of 9 How do you take a guy like Korean my me look at Karim's record even look at Kobe Bryant's record quote We did a hell of a lot more look at the at the end of the day this guy is high pipe type and that just tells you that the league doesn't have what it thought it had and when Steph Curry went down the league lost its nice guy poster boy and now they're stuck with this clown Yeah the the greatest outstanding abusing traveler. Gets a lot of frequent flier miles I guess I don't know all I know is it's not fair it's not right and the n.b.a. Is in my opinion a substandard product and frankly I don't even watch it I don't like to watch it because there are no in my opinion we don't see the defense we don't see the game that actually we grew up watching we don't see the we just we always see it worked out when you try him traveling in w n o a head right way over to the no you n.b.a. That's where the fundamentals will come through and that's where this strategy comes out there not only did I not hype and travelers. Watch the ladies anyway folks that's going to do it for the sports which is the day I'm going to be better so make sure you join us next time for more laughs and mayhem until then so long everyone.
