you could actually tear down the goalpost at the end of the football game. now that was excitement. so will the weather be tomorrow. game time temperatures should be about 1 degree above 0 and it's going to feel like 15 below and that's at the beginning of the game. by the end of the game, it's going to be down to about 25 below. there's also a chance of snow showers as well all part of a big traveled from new york to washington. still digging out from friday's blizzard over 200 volunteers helped elderly residents who were still stuck in their homes after over a foot of snow fell in are trying to get back on schedule after storm related cancellations and delays. but jeff pegeus reports. >> reporter: the new faa rules limit pilots' anytiming time to eight on -- flying time to eight on fire hours and also there's a ten hour minimum rest period. they need to opportunity for eight hours of uninterrupted sleep. the new rules are already impacking some flights. the spokeswoman for jet blue airlines told us weather disruptions are a factor but a majority of delays and cancellations today are related to crews not being available. the industry has had two years to prepare for the rule change. some have hired new pilots to fill scheduling conflicts. two airlines have developed new scheduling software. this weekend some airlines are bringing in extra employees and attempting to warn passengers about canceled flights as soon as possible. it was the crash in buffalo in 2009 that renewed the debate leading to today's rule change. investigators determined fatigue was a factor police this man david allen douglas followed them home and showed a gun and shoved the girl into his car. police were called and sometime after 11:00 the girl was rescued. >> the rescue of the 7-year-old happened here at the antioch marina. thanks to a couple of things including an amber alert and an observant woman who was willing to get involved. even at some perm risk. -- personal risk. the woman is lashay burkes. >> we were parked next to the car, that was crazy. >> reporter: she and her sister were hanging out at the marina when she got a call from another sister. >> she told us what kind of car it was. i said we're sitting next to a gold toyota. >> reporter: her sister warned her the man might have a gun but burke's pressed on. >> i was going to knock on his window. the guy window because i saw him laying down and i thought there cannot be an adult laying under him. i went to my car and i just honked the horn to stop the scar and the car that stopped was a police officer undercover and i just kept punching the horn and he jumped out with the gun and he took -- told the guy to get out of the car. >> reporter: the 7-year-old was declared safe and sound. police are not commenting on the case but they are now focusing on a prosecution instead of a search and rescue. in antioch, don knapp, kpix 5. >> still searching for a motive for the kidnapping. douglas is jailed on $4 million bond and he's also a suspect in two attempted kidnappings at the same wal-mart. neighbors say douglas recently lost his job. a u.s. coast guard ice breaker is on its way to free two ships that are stuck in the ice in the antarctic. 400 feet long the polar star is specially designed to bust through thick ice. one of the ships it needs to free is a research ship that first got urging people get flu shots. reminding the public the flu virus lives longer in colder weather. in santa clara county where a 41-year-old woman died of h1n1 december 23rd, dr. paul russell is concerned things could get worse. >> i would expect the cases of the flu to go up over the next month or so. >> reporter: according to the cdc, the majority of flu cases this year is the h1n1 strain. in marin county alone ten people tested positive for h1n1. also called the swine flu, h1n1 first popped up in the u.s. in 2009. spreading from central mexico eventually killing almost 20,000 people worldwide. public health experts say swine flu targets a different demographic from other flu strains which often sicken infants, the elderly and ill. >> and what's unusual about it is that even young healthy adults can get quite sick. and even land in the hospital from h1n1. >> reporter: the good news? this year's flu shot is equipped to quite the swine flu. but according to the cdc, most american adults do not get a flu shot. >> no i haven't. >> why not? >> i've never gotten one before. just pretty healthy and i really don't take any flu shots, i don't take any medicine at all. >> i got a terrible stomach flu not too long ago and i will probably be getting one. >> reporter: better act sooner than later. the shot takes two weeks before you're fully protected and doctors say flu season is already in high gear. in san francisco, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> and in a similar vein, pardon the pun, a new stanford study shows the flu vaccine may be less effective in men than in women. researchers say testosterone causes the immune system to produce fewer abouts that translate -- antibiotics that translates to a lower defense mechanism against the vaccine. study participants with the highest level of testosterone had the worst response to the vaccine. you have a little longer to pay your first month's premium. insurance companies today extended the deadline to january 15th. that's for policies effective january 1st. as long as you pay by that deadline you'll be covered all month. the state says about 400,000 people have signed up for health plans so far. santa rosa will relax the rules on medicinal marijuana dispensaries. it lets a rule that currently caps sales at 500 patients a month. the workers would be able to use marijuana on the job but only through ingestion or a vaporizer meaning they can't smoke it. the council will consider the changes on tuesday. the price to park at many b.a.r.t. stations is about to go up. starting january 13th, the cost at most east bay stations will rise by 50 cents to $2 a day. it will be $3 to park at daly city and $6 at west oakland. the price increase will be used for station improvements, fees at eight other stations including richmond, bay fair and mill bright will not change. and residents along san francisco's almost bard street are again pushing for crowd control. say they that hundreds -- they say that hundreds of people show up every day as early as 7:00 in the morning. they are having a hard time just getting into their houses because of all the vehicle and foot traffic. the city is looking into possible traffic restrictions or even installing a toll booth. well, a mountain lion is caught on camera roaming through a southern california backyard. now watch as the big cat carefully struts through the driveway into the yard. it actually looks like it's heading for something. the mountain lion then took off over a fence but tonight the family dog is also missing. the homeowner is wondering if the lion may have had had something to do with that. here's a happy dog in new hampshire who says cleaning up after a snowstorm -- it can be fun. the yellow lab had a blast chasing snow from the snow blower after that big nor'easter moved through. his owner though he seemed a little less enthusiastic. and three brothers in minnesota are putting the snow to good news. trevor austin and conner barts spent 95 hours sculpting this giant ten foot snow shark. they created a new sculpture every year. well, we've got plenty of material to work with as you know they have some of the coldest weather in 20 years getting ready to move into the upper midwest then new england. it will last for a few days. that is bad news for them. after all of that snow they got more than a foot in new york. for us, by comparison, it's nice and balmy for this time of the year. and this time of the night it's 46 degrees at oakland and 56 at livermore. 50 in san francisco and 46 in san jose. we're going to go to the bay bridge there. for tomorrow sunny and mild and temperatures will be in the mid 60s for the most part. around the bay nice warm day we'll probably hit some record highs again for sunday. tonight, spare the air alert still posted but there's none forecast for tomorrow. and that is the first time in a while we haven't seen that. low pressure is the culprit in all this as it tracks up from the gulf coast into new england. there's that cold air just being pulled down from the arctic region and that's going to be moving in by monday and tuesday. for us, they have a very deep area of low pressure. we have a very high ridge of strong high pressure so we go to sunny and mild west coast weekend. going to be nice. it's actually looking at ocean beach believe it or not. mild weekend weather cooling off next week and a chance of the dry spell finally going away but not by leaps and bound. we might get a sprinkle or two on tuesday and wednesday wouldn't amount to much and then the high pressure builds right back in by thursday and friday. so we just can't catch a break from this. not yet anyway. and we'll have to stay tuned. up in redding partly cloudy skies and 59 degrees. redding where there's so much heat in the summertime you can just watch the water evaporate from the rice crops, a monsoon crop being grown in -- up there in the northern end of the sacramento valley. 68 at fresno and 70 degrees at monterey. overnight lows tonight santa rosa down to 30-degrees and 31 at napa. 32 for concord and 34 degrees at livermore and san francisco 41 for an overnight low. tomorrow we're going to be well above average for this time the year. livermore is 65 and it'd be nine degrees above normal for this time in january. san jose 65 and san francisco 64 degrees. for the south bay, it's going to be nice. temperatures will hit 67 at campbell and at the home of apple computer it's 67. cupertino. 64 for los gatos and 66 degrees at half-moon bay. 65 for san jose. out on the east bay. right at the fault to danville. 66 degrees. walnut creek 67. and concord home of the concord falls 63-degrees and 67 at napa on the other side of the bay. up in the north bay. we follow the heyward fault where it becomes the very dangerous -- the extension of the heyward fault. up through santa rosa. where tomorrow it's going to be in the upper 60s and it's 69 degrees there. 70 in windsor and 70 degrees at clover dale. that's the rogers creek fault by the way. in the exdenieded forecast we're going to be looking for partly cloudy skies monday through healthy adults can get quite sick. and even land in the hospital from h1n1. >> reporter: the good news? this year's flu shot is equipped to quite the swine flu. but according to the cdc, most american adults do not get a flu shot. >> no i haven't. >> why not? >> i've never gotten one before. just pretty healthy and i really don't take any flu shots, i don't take any medicine at all. >> i got a terrible stomach flu not too long ago and i will probably be getting one. >> reporter: better act sooner than later. the shot takes two weeks before you're fully protected and doctors say flu season is already in high gear. in san francisco, mark kelly, kpix 5. >> and in a similar vein, pardon the pun, a new stanford study shows the flu vaccine may be less effective in men than in women. researchers say testosterone causes the immune system to produce fewer abouts that translate -- antibiotics that translates to a lower defense mechanism against the vaccine. study participants with the highest level of testosterone had the worst response to the vaccine. you have a little longer to pay your first month's premium. insurance companies today extended the deadline to january 15th. that's for policies effective january 1st. as long as you pay by that deadline you'll be covered all month. the state says about 400,000 people have signed up for health plans so far. santa rosa will relax the rules on medicinal marijuana dispensaries. it lets a rule that currently caps sales at 500 patients a month. the workers would be able to use marijuana on the job but only through ingestion or a vaporizer meaning they can't smoke it. the council will consider the changes on tuesday. the price to park at many b.a.r.t. stations is about to go up. starting january 13th, the cost at most east bay stations will rise by 50 cents to $2 a day. it will be $3 to park at daly city and $6 at west oakland. the price increase will be used for station improvements, fees at eight other stations including richmond, bay fair and mill bright will not change. and residents along san francisco's almost bard street are again pushing for crowd control. say they that hundreds -- they say that hundreds of people show up every day as early as 7:00 in the morning. they are having a hard time just getting into their houses because of all the vehicle and foot traffic. the city is looking into possible traffic restrictions or even installing a toll booth. well, a mountain lion is caught on camera roaming through a southern california backyard. now watch as the big cat carefully struts through the driveway into the yard. it actually looks like it's heading for something. the mountain lion then took off over a fence but tonight the family dog is also missing. the homeowner is wondering if the lion may have had had something to do with that. here's a happy dog in new hampshire who says cleaning up after a snowstorm -- it can be fun. the yellow lab had a blast chasing snow from the snow blower after that big nor'easter moved through. his owner though he seemed a little less enthusiastic. and three brothers in minnesota are putting the snow to good news. trevor austin and conner barts spent 95 hours sculpting this giant ten foot snow shark. they created a new sculpture every year. well, we've got plenty of material to work with as you know they have some of the coldest weather in 20 years getting ready to move into the upper midwest then new england. it will last for a few days. that is bad news for them. after all of that snow they got more than a foot in new york. for us, by comparison, it's nice and balmy for this time of the year. and this time of the night it's 46 degrees at oakland and 56 at livermore. 50 in san francisco and 46 in san jose. we're going to go to the bay bridge there. for tomorrow sunny and mild and temperatures will be in the mid 60s for the most part. around the bay nice warm day we'll probably hit some record highs again for sunday. tonight, spare the air alert still posted but there's none forecast for tomorrow. and that is the first time in a while we haven't seen that. low pressure is the culprit in all this as it tracks up from the gulf coast into new england. there's that cold air just being pulled down from the arctic region and that's going to be moving in by monday and tuesday. for us, they have a very deep area of low pressure. we have a very high ridge of strong high pressure so we go to sunny and mild west coast weekend. going to be nice. it's actually looking at ocean beach believe it or not. mild weekend weather cooling off next week and a chance of the dry spell finally going away but not by leaps and bound. we might get a sprinkle or two on tuesday and wednesday wouldn't amount to much and then the high pressure builds right back in by thursday and friday. so we just can't catch a break from this. not yet anyway. and we'll have to stay tuned. up in redding partly cloudy skies and 59 degrees. redding where there's so much heat in the summertime you can just watch the water evaporate from the rice crops, a monsoon crop being grown in -- up there in the northern end of the sacramento valley. 68 at fresno and 70 degrees at monterey. overnight lows tonight santa rosa down to 30-degrees and 31 at napa. 32 for concord and 34 degrees at livermore and san francisco 41 for an overnight low. tomorrow we're going to be well above average for this time the year. livermore is 65 and it'd be nine degrees above normal for this time in january. san jose 65 and san francisco 64 degrees. for the south bay, it's going to be nice. temperatures will hit 67 at campbell and at the home of apple computer it's 67. cupertino. 64 for los gatos and 66 degrees at half-moon bay. 65 for san jose. out on the east bay. right at the fault to danville. 66 degrees. walnut creek 67. and concord home of the concord falls 63-degrees and 67 at napa on the other side of the bay. up in the north bay. we follow the heyward fault where it becomes the very dangerous -- the extension of the heyward fault. up through santa rosa. where tomorrow it's going to be in the upper 60s and it's 69 degrees there. 70 in windsor and 70 degrees at clover dale. that's the rogers creek fault by the way. in the exdenieded forecast we're going to be looking for partly cloudy skies monday through thursday. let's get some high clouds from time to time and we will cool off. so for the first time in a while we'll get some changes. and if it rains might be putting in the drops but such a small chance, it would happen on tuesday and wednesday and not amount to much and then watch what happens after thursday. we can show you by pressing a button. friday and saturday, we get right back to
