News. This is one essay I'm Joshua Johnson visiting k m u w in Wichita Kansas the inquiry is moving and the evidence is mounting now a 2nd whistleblower is coming forward with complaints that also point to an ethical conduct by President Trump most Republican lawmakers are either saying little about the i.q. Stations or denouncing the probe as a hoax or a hit job Meanwhile voters are trying to figure out what to make of all this controversy not nearly as complex as the Moeller probe but still in line with Democrats' efforts to prove Mr Trump unfit to lead we'll get the view from Kansas on the impeachment inquiry in a moment but 1st let's catch up on what's been going on in the last few days with Reid Wilson national correspondent for The Hill he's back at our home base in Washington welcome back to the program. We welcome your questions and thoughts about all of this so e-mail us one a. Org comment on our Facebook page tweet us at 1 am and of course this story is moving very very fast so do keep an ear on your n.p.r. Member station and an eye on npr dot org Reed we learned on Sunday that the lawyers who are representing v. Initial whistleblower who came forward about the president's phone call with Ukraine's president confirm that they're representing a 2nd whistleblower what more do we know if anything about the 2nd whistleblower Well we don't know too much we know that he or she is an intelligence official they didn't get any more specific than that this official has firsthand knowledge of the phone call between President Trump and Ukraine's president. He has spoken with a he he or she has spoken with the inspector general of the intelligence community that gives him or her the protections that a whistleblower would be afforded including anonymity he has he or she has not spoken with the congressional committees that are involved although that may come lawyers for the same lawyers who are. Representing the 1st whistle blower have said that they're working with Congress to try to find a date on which that whistleblower could testify talk about the potential impact the 2nd whistleblower might have I mean South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham tweeted quote when it comes to quote unquote more whistleblowers coming forward I've seen this movie before with Brett Kavanaugh more and more it doesn't mean better or reliable well and quote This is the fascinating thing about this Republican attempt to attack the whistleblowers themselves much of the of the information contained in the 1st whistleblowers report that has been made public has been validated and verified by documents that have come out of the White House itself details about the phone call details about who was who was on the call and who had been made aware of the concerns that the officials had brought to this whistle the 1st whistle blower so this is the sort of notion of attacking the messenger is a lot different than the Kavanaugh situation where it was one person's word versus another this is a document that has been verified and backed up by information that has come out of the White House itself because President Trump decided to release it one of the more striking Republican responses to this came yesterday on Meet the Press with an exchange between the moderator Chuck Todd and Republican Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin during that exchange he told the he told the program that this is exactly why President Trump is upset why his supporters are upset with the news media but then Senator Johnson and Chuck got into this really huge exchange including this listen Chuck I just want the truth the American people want you not try to be America do not trust the other guy you know trust the CIA not I'm just there are just here apps you don't trust any of our leaders I think your page Ok after after James told you believe that they are you CIA John they're going to start sending these guys in the Obama administration and that was Senator Ron John. And in an exchange with Chuck Todd on Meet the Press worth noting read that Senator Johnson is the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee whose job in part is to work with the f.b.i. And the CIA to secure the 2020 election so this back and forth seems fairly newsworthy and it was a it's a perpetuation of president. Sort of bring up this concept of the deep state these sort of conspiracy theories that have come from the root word regions of the Internet and are gaining gaining popularity I mean there's there is an undercurrent to this phone call between President Trump and Ukraine's president Zelinsky in which the president asks him ask the Linsky to investigate whether or not Ukraine was involved in. Interfering with the 2016 election and I mean that's you know. That struck me as a notable moment simply because the. Truth that the Russian government was involved in meddling with the 26000 election has been so thoroughly documented by officials President Trump's own administration we're speaking to read Wilson national correspondent for The Hill we welcome your questions and thoughts on where the impeachment inquiry stands now particularly love to hear from you if you are here in the state of Kansas How are you viewing all of this one a at you or by the way could you just remind us read who Peter Struck and Lisa Page are and why they matter right those are the 2 f.b.i. Agents who were sending it they were having an affair they were sending texts to each other about President Trump and they really became the focus point for the Fox News crowd trying to undercut the investigation member the president was talking about the 12 or 13 angry Democrats who were investigating him. And Lisa Paige were involved in that struck was on. Team before he was removed once mother found those messages or was made aware of the content of those text messages so they've become the center point of the of the conspiracy theory side of the attempt to discredit the motor report kind of extrapolating that because of Peter that Peter Struck and Lisa Page are emblematic of the larger intelligence community's efforts to discredit the president right how is the Republican Party dealing with this impeachment inquiry more broadly I mean is Senator Johnson what we just heard is that kind of emblematic of what Republicans have been saying lately there were several who were on the Sunday public affairs shows yesterday there's been some criticism particularly from Democrats and progressives that more Republicans are not speaking out or at least defending the inquiry process itself what are we hearing more broadly from the g.o.p. So I think there can divide them into sort of 3 camps one camp is the Ron Johnson camp firmly defending the president and and making the question more about the investigators and the investigation than about the actual substance of what even the White House has released and agreed as is true the 2nd camp I'd call it say the Roy Blunt Camp Roy Blunt was on one of the shows yesterday where he's taking a sort of wait and see approach he is supportive of the president but also supportive of oversight and investigation the same thing that we saw from Congressman Mark Amity from from Nevada last week that sort of in the middle camp and by the way there's a sub layer of that that level that people who are just being quiet one thing that was notable yesterday about the Sunday shows was just how few administration officials were actually on the show defending the president there is a lot of confusion in the White House about how to actually respond to this and there's a lot of embarrassment up on Capitol Hill I have had Republican members of Congress tell me that they simply are done defending the president and they won't accept the intern the invitation to go on some of these shows and then the 3rd camp here is are the few Republicans who have spoken. Out against particularly the president's call last week for China to investigate his but his political rivals and specifically former Vice President Joe Biden over the weekend we we heard from Senator Mitt Romney of Utah Senator Susan Collins of Maine Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska all of whom said that that's going too far they do not approve of the president making those statements so they're the 3 camps we don't have anybody yet in the in the going after President much is the way that say Barry Goldwater told Richard Nixon that it was time to resign now last night on Twitter the president suggested that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Adam Schiff who chairs the House Intelligence Committee are guilty of quote high crimes and misdemeanors and even treason I guess that means that they along with all of those that evil e colluded with them must all be immediately impeached unquote Now just to be clear high crimes and misdemeanors comes from that part of the Constitution that the fines the offenses that are impeachable treason however is a capital crime which can be punished by death just to put that into some context what are you seeing read so far in terms of how the president and the White House more particularly his immediate orbit are responding to the impeachment inquiry I mean are they preparing to mount a defense to this or is this still kind of information warfare Well I want to just pause in the moment that the president of the United States is accusing people of treason which is new and different and we should comment on the fact that that that is something that has that is shattering norms that have gone on shattered for more than 200 years we have hanged the traitors in this country just to be clear yes we have. Stopped at the what the White House the White House's own response however is is not terribly focused at the moment and I think that's a function of the fact that they were taken a little off guard by just how rapidly this is moved you and I have talked about the investigation for 2 years now and that. Seemed to inch along with barely any progress and and Robert Muller never saying anything in public now this this Ukraine stuff has blown up in the space of less than a month Adam Schiff the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee made public the fact that there was a whistleblower complaint I think it was September 9th so here we are less than a month later and we're in the midst of what is becoming a full blown impeachment investigation they have the White House appears to be relatively unprepared they don't seem to have a kind of plan they have resisted the idea of putting together a war room like Bill Clinton did when he was being impeached back in the 1990 s. The president said Why does why would he need a war room if he hasn't done anything wrong but it's not clear to me who's actually in charge and well I shouldn't say that it is clear who's in charge of the President Trump but there is no one particular person who is running point on some kind of legal strategy or political strategy or communication strategy and I think that has allowed the White House to be to become a little unfocused here at a moment when they need to be laser focused on what's coming out of Congress Ken emailed I believe it is clear that the president broke the law and no matter how serious or small he did break the law and consequences must be taken if any citizen were to do the same jail time would be in their future is tyranny the norm now and Marcos tweeted it is a coup attempt to unseat a duly elected president the people see what is happening interesting point that Marcos makes especially because we are just about to go into primary season and read I'd like to get your reaction to what Marco said as we continue with 3 Wilson of The Hill we'll pivot to ask how Kansans are reacting to these impeachment proceedings and we'll get some more of your comments as well I'm Joshua Johnson and you're listening to one from you and n.p.r. . This is one a I'm Joshua Johnson in Wichita as updates on the inquiry into the impeachment of the president flow out of Washington how is that news landing across the u.s. We've partnered with k m u w 41 a across America our special collaboration with 6 stations to hear what issues matter to people as we approach the elections what Arkansans paying attention to when it comes to national politics we're speaking with Reed Wilson national correspondent for The Hill we welcome more of your questions and thoughts with you're here in Kansas or anywhere across the country but especially if you're here in Kansas comments on our Facebook page tweet us at one egg or e-mail one a apps w am you dot org Let me get to 2 more comments read and then we'll bring in one more voice for the conversation Edward emailed I'm listening to your show from my office just a few blocks away in downtown Wichita as a life long Kansan the recent events involving President Trump are unlikely to affect his approval by at least half of my state perception is reality and the reality of this situation is defined by one source of information many in my state choose to get their information from news sources that will not objectively report what is happening Marcos tweeted it is a coup attempt to unseat a duly elected president that people see what is happening read I wonder if we could take those 2 comments together in terms of what happens next year I know there were some Democrats who were looking at the molar probe and hoping that that would be the knockout blow that made the whole country go oh yeah you're not fit to be president and it didn't work this impeachment inquiry is a little bit clear cut and I know there are some Democrats who are still think yes we may not be able to remove him by the election but this could deal agenda mys him in time for 2020 there's a huge political aspect of this that makes it feel risky for everyone involved yeah and one of the things that we've heard from Democrats across the country the pollsters and strategists who I spend my day talking to is that they're sort of of 2 minds here in one sense yes the. Senate is probably not going to remove the President so why take this step why make the political risk that could in fact put control of the House and the 2020 election up at stake at risk on the other hand there are Democrats who say you got to do this anyway because of the precedent it sets the sort of the moral responsibility to actually lead if Democrats got elected to run the House of Representatives and there they find evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors and they don't impeach will that enables the next president whether it is you know Mike Pence earlier with Warren enables the next president to take further steps or you know political power has been bleeding from Congress to the White House basically nonstop since Watergate so this is every president takes a little bit more. Power in executive authority this president has taken even more than the last 2 did so what is what is Congress going to do to stop this bleeding of power to Edwards point one of the interesting things that we've seen is that there are in fact cracks forming in the conservative media some hosts on Fox News have gone so far as to say that President Trump's asking for help from the Ukraine or from China is beyond the pale is too much Tucker Carlson even argued that in an op ed over the weekend and we heard this morning some Fox and Friends folks who we know the president listens to saying the same thing at least about some other aspects of what the administration is doing so there are there are
