Defensive player of the year what I like about Jack anything. No aftercare No his wounds. And probably a few more that I don't know that I had probably figured out you know Jack the last time I saw you was a couple years ago and I tell you when you walked into the room there are only a handful of players I think that when they walk in people turn around I don't know what it was maybe the way you played football the whole are of you the way you carry yourself they do the same thing with people like Dick Butkus when I think a defense of players that gets that same reaction but you never sense that you were you were larger than life in a sense. No no I think part of of that have to do with playing and in the temple play around. And the arena. And Los Angeles I think part of that is stems from that I found a place in Green Bay or. Phoenix or someplace like that I don't think you would have near the notoriety that you know that people it still amazes me people recognize me you know where you where you go you go to you know some guy station and they you know I know you were I think I know you did because you know you know when you played for tonight or something. It's interesting that that that they that they do recognize you know that I was talking with a friend of my back in New York today and I said when I say Jack Youngblood what do you think of 1st me said a tough player that you could always count on would be out there on the field that toughness that attitude it's not something that comes naturally to a lot of people wanted to come so at least appear to be so easily to you. Right and it's part of my upbringing. Part of the training and. You know the role models of my parents and grandparents that certainly is the basis of it and then and then. My my peers when I came into like that was the style and the way they played the game and that's how I was taught to play the game you know everyone has to learn to play from high school to college to college to to the professional level and you know we I learned from the best I learned from or know somebody condones Roman Gabriel Nestor was isn't trying to count one type of players Joshi barely Tom Mack learn from those type of guys and that's how they played and so therefore I figured that that's where I'm supposed to play and he just carried on you were described by your teammates people that you played with and also you could temporaries of having a fanatical work ethic and I've always heard that word are the words work ethic used before with certain players tell me how that was defined as far as Jack Youngblood goes where when you're when you're when you're you're slow your smile and you know very strong. Better you better have something going for you. And I guess I guess work ethic covers all of the you know that that unknown territory there's. There's not a very is a that you can't really put a finger on so I think they are there again they're going to invent something that you develop. I think it it's sort of nurtures itself you you get some success you gain success from things that you're doing so therefore you would try to improve on them and and doing a little better as you as you go along and then it sort of just multiplies why I thought of those 3 words when they said fanatical work ethic I thought if you drop the work ethic and just said fanatical they might. You know you've got to be a little bit fanatical when you're when you think about it out of the $245.00 pound defensive end you know going up against guys that were you know at least had at least 40 pounds bigger than I was and now and in today's game to be you know they'd be a 100 than I am but you got to be able to fanatical them to play the game did you ever have a a battle gone with somebody that you used to get a little bit crazy just so you can intimidate him that way. Well there was there was some there's you know perennial battles that you would that you would go through with the run you're is in the day and they're Dorson the race all right and those type of players but. I know I tried not to get too crazy because I can't lose yourself there but there was so much thinking and so many adjustments that you had to make you have to stay in the ballgame and if you if you went totally berserk in our scheme of things you couldn't play the game like you're supposed to play. Tell me a little bit about how the defensive end position has evolved evolve Jack because and nowadays you see a lot of people playing that defensive end position and they're kind of freelancers in a sense they go in there they get a lot of glory or other situation players that are in there only to rush the quarterback tell me a little bit how that has evolved Well I wish that I had a guy had been able to participate in these type of defenses if I had been just a situational player I'd still be playing I mean great day in the morning when you don't have to take but you know maybe maybe 20 snaps a ballgame and you do get to do it own on the on the yeah in the best situation where you're just rushing the passer I mean good gracious alive you should be able to play the game for you know for 152025 years but we had to play the game for you know when that when they flip it going to the to the gun found it didn't matter what it what it was you were on the field you didn't get to come off they would let you know they've been turned back on you when you try to come off the field wouldn't you come off there a lot of people still talk about you had terms of the broken leg and for those fans around the country can you kind of explain to him what that's all about because that's part of the lore part of the mystique of Jack Youngblood Yeah it is I think I think I got more you know more publicity over the broken leg. And being crazy enough to to attempt to play on that and than I did for leading the league with sacks you know the years that they had and you know and. Being in the defensive end that I was. It was a situation where you know we've been so close so many times and I was not to allow some injury to prevent me if I could if I could possibly within my powers I possibly could go out and participate and help my foot something I was going to take part in it and if you're in the in the Dallas playoff game. And we taped it up at halftime and I'm back and finish that ball game beat Dallas down to Tampa Tampa in the in the championship game which we had you know we've been we've been the door had been slammed in our face so many times before for the times. We went and b. Tampa and we made it to the Super Bowl and and I attempted to play in that I did I didn't play very well but I played what type of mental rationalization does a professional athlete used to be able to deal with the pain and in everything that's associated with that type of circumstance it's Sunday. It's Sunday that's the only rationale racking ever come up with it was time to bright you know that was you know it was it was another ballgame it was another step it was it was another opportunity to go out and and and kind of participate and play and play the game to love so well. And just because it hurt a little bit. Should not distract you. If there's anything that that that bothers me about that is the fact that I didn't allow me the injury did not allow me to play at the level that I expected Jack Young but the player that that's the only thing that that. If there's any regret or remorse about the decision what about the love the fear factor and I say that from a standpoint of that you might have a lingering problem with that you were able to put that out of your mind and still say that Look football is this important to me Jack Youngblood and I'm going to go out there no matter what I mean you obviously knew you had a broken leg did you not oh yeah oh that we knew it but I knew it was broken it in Dallas. I mean we took it took an x. Ray of it in the 1st half of that volume in the bin that there's no plan do you remember what you said when you find found out are was confirmed that it was broken .
