The announcement also comes on the heels of yesterdays recordbreaking number of hospitalizations in texas. More than 7300 patients diagnosed with coronavirus are now being treated at hospitals across the state, a figure that has doubled in just the last two weeks. Health officials all over the country have been expressing concern about this very holiday weekend, concerns that people would not heed the warnings about social distancing were gathering in large groups particularly in states experiencing those surges. A lot of public beaches have been closed in places like california, florida, and also right here in south texas. Or at the very least, access to those spots including boat ramps and campgrounds limited. It is really up to all of us, keep those celebrations super small. We will get through it if we all move from selfishness to sacrifice. Meantime in arizona, the number of patients hospitalized is going down. A number of new cases has gone up, which officials have largely attributed to increased Testing Capacity according to data on the states web site, icu beds base has increased to 91 in the last few days. While in florida, the mayor of miami has implemented a curfew now which goes into effect today. Also ordered the cities movie theaters, arcades, and bowling alleys and a majority of casinos around that region to also close their doors yet again. Neil thank you very much. How are customers dealing with that . There was certainly some disappointment when the governor decided to curtail the Indoor Dining, thank god we were able to adjust and i would say we are fortunate, have a million square feet so we have a lot of space on our outdoor decks and dining areas so we were able to adjust. But clearly hey if you to entertain or have the inside gourmet rooms, that is something not available, but there are no restrictions on food or beverage or alcohol and in this he has been extremely strong. Neil how it could benefit you is in florida for example, a lot of people seek indoor venue israelis where they are allowed, are you seeing that for a crowd that might normally be outside looking to go to some of these other outdoor hot spots and now cant migrate to you . Certainly in florida, no, we are not seeing that. But in atlantic city, always been this debate about the casinos that im in the Marina District having a bit of an advantage because of the accessibility. First time in 25 years is actually been on the boardwalk because they can leave their facility, go outside, enjoy all the other restaurants and activities that frankly just dont exist over in the Marina District. They are kind of landlocked they are. Neil how are you doing it in the facilities themselves . It seems every other operator has a different standard even putting up dividers between those even down to slot machines come every other one opening, what are you doing . Could we have problems tonight . First of all, one of the rights that we have here in america is to peacefully prote protest. Native american leaders may very well come to protests and they are welcome to protest as long as its peaceful and i believe that it will be but just about 12 miles away from beautiful Mount Rushmore where we have these four guys up there who have done so many great things for our country is also an entire mountain which is crazy horse and when the lakota leaders saw, they saw one of the guys who was working there if he would consider helping them because they wanted their leaders to be represented as well. And so for folks that come to south dakota, please come see Mount Rushmore, learn the story of america through the eyes of the president , and then go over and see an entire mountain being carved in crazy horse. I think it is a fair and balanced approach as i tell people, there is nothing wrong with diversity and there is nothing wrong with celebrating diversity. So for me, i love to come to the hills and go to crazy horse, but Mount Rushmore is so special and it tells america that these four guys, these people who are not perfect, but are the folks that represent the ideals that we strive for, and as they said, way back when, it wasnt perfect, but striving to create a more perfect union, but their lives on the line, he lost his life trying to make things better. Neil there is no doubt about that. I guess the timing of this and i understand what the president is trying to do, unite people on this but its got to stick and some nerves, you mention the dedication there, great spiritual leader who was going after americans at the time because they were taking the land that he believed belonged to native americans. I believe the black hills region still technically is native American Land so it is going to incite some old grievances so do you think the president should be there to agitate that . I can see what you mean, it is a stunning wonder of this country, but it could be interpreted as rubbing salt in some peoples wounds. Any time you have the president of the United States come to your state, he is not coming to cause problems, he is coming to celebrate and unite people. This will be the second time that ive been on Mount Rushmore with the president. I think thats exactly what the president wants to do, he wants to share a vision of what this country is all about, the goals that we have of making things better, and i dont think people see it as anything other than that. For protesters, it gives them an opportunity to highlight their grievances but with Mount Rushmore than any time you bring in additional president to Mount Rushmore, theres always an opportunity for people to seek out and that is never going to change. The fact is the cuts that were made are real and might not be 1 billion but where they will reduce the amount that police around the streets, police retiring at record numbers, Response Time is going to go down. He did away with the anticrime units which was 600 like those officers who prevented the crime, uniformed officers respond to crime, plainclothes officers prevent crimes from happening so will be much more dangerous setting and mayor de blasio as usual has support of the protesters had not supported the police and because of the things that are happening like taking away qualified immunity from them are not going to respond. Theyre going to respond when they see a crime happening in front of them, but theyre not going to do anything assertive and from the safest city in our america is going to go back to the bad days when they were 2,000. Neil it quickly is that im worried about that, especially at this time. You and i discussed this but even looking at the language and some of the signs spraypainted around city hall, the fact of the matter is, crime has brought up markedly in this at a time when a lot of people who have been sheltered at home are now looking to go back, im not sure theyre going to be so eager to do that. To say nothing of those who want to visit the city, tourists, the lifeblood of the city who are looking at this and saying i dont think so. What do you think . District attorney in some of these cities are looking more to charge Police Officers then discharged violent protesters and rioters. Our citizens have heeded the call before and helped us when we made the call for ppe, hunker down and close businesses even when they werent mandated to. Although they have no statewide requirements, the mayor of savannah has issued an emergency order imposing a 500 fine on those who fail to cover their faces in public. Some question whether we would hold up to a legal challenge since the governors executive order on covid19 supersedes local policy. Around the country, other cities are enforcing face coverings and west hollywood, california, the first time you were caught on mast could cost you 300, and that is drawing mixed reaction. Definitely in a crowded area like the beaches, definitely should be enforcement but if you are like me going out for a walk on the street and more than 6 feet away from the next person, i dont think its totally crazy. Is still like the case in texas where we are just hearing from the Health Department that the coronavirus cases rose today by 7,552 a total of 183,532. So that acceleration continues nationally, much has been talked about the spiking cases. What doesnt get as much attention is the fact that despite the 14 Day Moving Average that shows cases increasing 90 to 55,595 on a rolling basis, the fact of the matter is new deaths are down 19 in that same area of 722 began. Looking at a 14 day cycle here that kind of puts it in a little bit better perspective, joins us right now. Doctor, you are looking at this and we chatted about this. What do you make of that . You get a lot of people like to point to the fact that hospitalization spikes nationally isnt as severe in the death count is actually going down. He put it all together for us. Ooh you cant look at deaths in isolation because you have to remember that they are a lagging indicator. Theyre going to take some time to accrue so you cant look at deaths now in case and say there is a mismatch. We have to look at that in the future because we know some of these cases are going to take time especially when theyre younger individuals. They have to transmit it to a vulnerable person, get sick enough to need hospitalization and then die so we will see some uptick in deaths, hopefully not as bad as what we saw it early on because weve got new tools, gotten better at dealing with these patients, understanding the complications and how to prevent them but we are going to see more deaths occur. Its a simple biological fact. As more people get infected, more people will die but hopefully not at the rates we saw in march and april. Neil we are looking at different numbers and it does seem to be concentrated to Southern States where many thought the warm weather originally would quash this. The counterargument is because of the exceptionally warm weather in some places blistering weather, people were indoors but what do you make of that and where these are concentrated . It is definitely multiple factors at play right now. Some of these states didnt get hit early on and maybe some complacency in the psychology of the people they are not being an issue there, maybe not enough contact raisers as well but the other issue has me never thought they would be complete seasonality. Especially with surface transmission when it got hotter and sunnier and more humid and the virus would be viable as long but that doesnt really interfere with the interfere with persontoperson transmission and they were so many people susceptible in so many people interacting that we dont see that kind of seasonality that we see with other connor viruses but alternatively, we have to be prepared in the fall for this to accelerate and is definitely true that there may be a reverse effect with people going indoors because it is so hot and people are seeking shelter and we know indoor transmission is greater than outdoor transmission. Neil talked about a feared mutation that goes on here making it harder to deal with, but could potentially accelerate, do you know anything about that . Weve been tracking this virus for a long time looking at its genetics and we know all viruses mutate the most mutations dont do anything. What we are seeing a some data emerge that there is a new strain of this, a new clone that still does the same thing to you but has a different genetic sequence to it. One specific change that is occurring and it seems to be dominant in all places of the world where it has appeared and it looks like at least in Laboratory Settings that might be more efficiently transmitting. We dont know if thats the case, theres a lot more science that needs to be done, but it doesnt change the fact that the virus still has the same amount of lethality in the same amount of severity, just that i might be more transmissible but again we have to stay tuned to what the actual science shows based on the laboratory studies. The key is to try to keep this going until we can really truly get the economy back. Is not going to get back completely until the vaccine is here but as close as possible in getting there faster than anyone thought. Let me ask you about that because you know in new jersey and elsewhere just as we were unwinding and sort of getting out again, restrictions again on dining to delay that, not so much on other Business Activity but that has been the case in places like texas and florida where a little bit has been dialed back. Im not sure, big country, certain pockets were we werent going to pack the restaurants, always going to be social distancing, so it could but in the last few months, america has created 13 million more jobs and the experts thought we would so maybe we are a bit ahead of our skis but its a good place to be right now.
