This virus is getting out of hand. We got word today out of italy that the number of deaths in a single day north of 620 individuals was the highest recorded by any country on any single day including china in the better than four month history of this virus. And it is not slowing down. It is escalating in europe, it is escalating in other regions, and it is escalating here. We just got word that the new jersey governor now is putting a thing on any sort of emergency activity. If you are not essential, you were not going to work. If you are a business whose items are not considered essential to have, you will not open your doors. If that sounds familiar, it should, because it is happening in california. It is happening in new york. It is happening in pennsylvania. 70 million americans are under such restrictions, it probably wont end there. Lets get the reed from john roberts at the white house on how the president is handling all of this. John. Good afternoon, the president right now any part of the rack Conference Call with Small Business owners. They are among the hardest hit because they rely on constant cash flow, they dont have a lot of reserves and if they cant bring people in the door or ship items out the front door they will have a difficult time keeping going. There was some talk earlier this week by the president s chief Economic Advisor that if it comes to it, the United States government may have to cover revenues for a lot of those Small Businesses. The big piece of news today, the United States now all but closing down the border between the United States and mexico to all but essential crossborder traffic including trade. The same sort of thing with canada has been going on for a couple of days. The centers for Disease Control today announced that all Illegal Immigrants who try to cross the border, whether it be the northern border or the southern border, will quickly be sent back from where they came. Here is what the president said about that earlier today. We are doing a global pandemic, they threatened to create a perfect storm that would spread the infection to our border agents. Left unchecked, this would cripple our immigration system, overwhelm our health care system, and severely damage our national security. We are not going to let that happen. There is a bit of optimism here at the white house, the president brought a up the possibility of a new treatment. A bit of difference of opinion between the president and his chief Infectious Disease expert dr. Anthony fauci. The president very optimistic about it, dr. Fauci more circumspect. Listen here. I feel good about it. Its just a feeling, i am a smart guy. I feel good about it. We need to do it in a way as widely making it available for people who might hope that it might work. You are also collecting data that will ultimately show that it is truly effective and safe under the conditions of covid19. President trump saying earlier today that the government has procured many, many units of hydroxychloroqui hydroxychloroquine, wasnt able to discern and differentiate whether or not that is for critical studies in patients or to use in the Patient Population at large. I think it is probably for clinical studies, dr. Fauci acknowledging that it might be effective and that would be a good thing if it is effective. The president saying if it is effective, that could be a game changer. Neil. Neil john roberts, thank you very, very much. Before we get to the capital, i want to update you on the various states that are looking at shelter in place reactions to this ongoing virus threat. Illinois the latest to recommend that its residents shelter in place, that is not considered a lockdown but for many it is the first step in that. California governor gavin newsom has the same requirement. 20 million residents will be affected by big limitations on their travel. The situation has played out much the same in new york, in new jersey, right now as i said 80 million americans. Again, about a quarter of the u. S. Population. We will keep you posted on that asset number is likely to grow, and illinois staying in place starts tomorrow. In some of these other states like california and new york, immediately. In the meantime, lets get the reed on how they are trying to get a handle on this in washington. By spending a good deal of money. Good afternoon, neil. The goal is to get this agreement forged in the United States senate. Democrats and republicans sometime tonight in the past couple hours, Chuck Schumer the democratic leader, House Speaker nancy pelosi, and the treasury secretary have all spoken by telephone here. Mitch mcconnell wants to move this through the senate, actually right the text tomorrow and have a vote sometime tomorrow night. What that could tee up is a monday passage of this bill, may be as early procedurally depending on how they do it, it could be monday at 1 00 a. M. And the house of representatives would have to meet later in the day, maybe tuesday or wednesday. That is Congress Moving at warp speed. Here is something that is key, i was told yesterday this is something that speaks to the markets this has to be done by monday, the markets are not going to tolerate inaction. This needs to be done by monday. I inquired further, they hearken back to what happened in 2008. The application here is that hank paulson, the then treasury secretary called nancy pelosi on the 18th of september 2008 and said i need to meet with you tonight, we are not going to have an economy by monday. I asked the source, if that will be are really dealing with your . They said this is pretty grim, that is why they are trying to underscore by monday, get this done as soon as they can. Here we are, late on friday afternoon. They still dont have the text, they need to get democratic votes, the house of representatives is controlled by the democrats and there is some republican reluctance. You will need 60 votes to get this through the senate to avoid a filibuster, Mitch Mcconnell the republican leader lost eight republicans on his side of the aisle when they moved to phase two on wednesday. You have to have agreement with democrats, neil. Neil i would advise that they focus on the virus, and less about stimulus. That is something that Chuck Schumer said, he said we have to deal with the virus and that is why a lot of things he is asking for are related. Not so much economic. Neil all right, thank you very much my friend. Lets get the reed from senator majorit majority whip r. I give all of you guys great credit for this, it is very clear if i were to look at the Market Reaction that any sort of stimulus that is being considered, whether the senate reserve, or buying trillions of dollars worth of corporate, mortgage, security paper, none of that works. I am wondering if the greater effort should be placed in addressing the virus itself. You are absolutely right, neil. That is where it all starts, we are trying to deal with the symptoms and we really need to be treating the cause. The calls, of course, is the coronavirus, which we need a vaccine for. Obviously in the meantime, we need to do everything we can to stop it spread which has been the focus of all the activities by the medical professionals and everybody stopping and trying to contribute to duct. We need to make it as easy as possible to get rid of the regulatory obstacles to getting a vaccine out there as quickly as possible, usually it takes test and research. The mike period all you have to go through, we should be streamlining that process in order to get to the vaccine, wed to be able to get this immediately because if we dont, obviously it could be with us for a very long time and as you can tell, that would have a profound adverse impact on the economy. That is what we are trying to address here on capitol hill. Ultimately, it comes down to eating this disease. If that is going to require coming up with that vaccine. Neil do you think the president appreciates the gravity of all of this . It came to light today in his press brief, with dr. Fauci dialed back some of that optimism he has about getting this under control. Its pretty severe, it is not to be dismissed. I am giving it a quick read, but he wasnt on the same page as the president. He said this is something the president doesnt really appreciate getting bad. I think the president gets stopped, his team is up here right now in full force. We have the secretary mnuchin, secretary scalia, we have a whole battery of people appear from the administration who are working with republicans and democrats to craft a bill that e Health Crisis component, but also trying to deal with the economic harms not only for families and individuals and workers, but also for Small Businesses that employ them. So, it is a full court press. I think the president understands that, i think everybody does. All you have to do is look around the country and see what is happening. I think he is rightly focused on trying to come up with solutions that will beat the disease and combating the virus and it spread is the best we can do right now. We need to be putting all our efforts behind coming up with a solution that ultimately will treat this. I think that is where dr. Fauci and all the members of the president s team have their eyes and their focus right now, in the meantime we have to assist states, hospitals, Health Care Providers, people on the front lines. Neil what i am asking, senator, not to be rude but just to be clear, the president is not minimizing this. I dont want to give people the wrong impression. He is optimistic, i get that as a leader that is a positive thing to do. What dr. Fauci says, well, not quite, this is still a serious thing. Shouldnt he be deferring to the medical experts . I think we all need to defer to the medical experts. I think the president , like all of us, is listening very carefully. Hearing from our Health Care Providers in my state of south dakota and obviously their input shapes the decisions that our elite back are getting made here. I think what people want out of the president are to be calm, measured, and reassuring leadership. He needs all of us to pull together, each and every one of us needs to be washing our hands and staying away from crowds. Neil all right, sir, thank you very, very much. It will be a crazy weekend for you guys. We will be monitoring all of this life on my weekend show on saturday when a lot of this will all be hitting the fan including this congressional action to deal with this. For those of you just tuned in here, it was an awful closing on an awful week. Neil illinois governor the latest to propose a shelter in place for his residence, that echoes what new york Governor Cuomo and california Governor Newsom have done in their respective states to limit residents from getting out and going to work, doing much of anything. It is not a lock down, but for a lot of folks who were in the middle of it it certainly feels like that. If you look at all the states that have variations of this, you are talking 80 million americans. Roughly a quarter of the u. S. Population, again, that could grow at an abundance of caution we are told by a number of the governors using it, including the governor of illinois just a few minutes ago. Lets get the read on how effective such measures are at combating a virus that seems to be spiraling out of control, dr. Bob lahey that joins us now. He is the chairman of medicine there, thank you for taking the time. I very much appreciate it. Thank you for having me, ne neil. Neil what do you think of this . I think this is following the prescribed method of suppressing the infection. You can suppress the advection, keep people away from potentially infected individuals. That is the way to go in the beginning, we are seeing and uptake in the hospital emergency room and hospital and nonnormal calls. Putting people in homes and apartments is a good way to suppress the infection rate. Social distancing that we practice now will cut a hole in this epidemic, this is not so draconian as everybody thinks, everyone saying oh, my gosh, the sky is falling. We have to slow the infectious process, that is mitigation, that is the next step. That doesnt stop the spread, it should be the first line of defense. What should be the first line of defense is to suppress things, that is why Governor Cuomo has chosen to keep all nonessential people out of the street, out of circulation as it were. Neil in florida, the other problem with people congregating outdoors on the beach or what have you, the governor will address reporters in 10 minutes or so. What do you think of those types of gatherings . I think they are terrible, i think young people think they are immune. No pun intended, they are not. We are seeing many of our most acute and most of our very, very sick cases are among 20 and 30yearolds. So the initial thought that young people didnt have to worry is not the case. These groups where there are more than 20 people together is insanity as far as im concerned. We are seeing people now, young, young people, children actually infected. Fortunately we havent had any terrible situations with children, but in young people i am surprised at the number of people around the state who are intubated, have a tube placed into their lungs so they can breathe better. These are young people, not necessarily older folks. Older folks are at the greatest risk, those with diabetes, emphysema, they know who they are, they in particular should stay home. Neil doctor, thank you very, very much. I always appreciate you. Thank you very much for all your Front Line Work to help folks get through this. They are the leaders in this battle, we should be very, very grateful for all the hard work. A sell out the of which we havent seen since we got back to the 1987 market crash, we art levels now that are below where they were when donald trump first assumed office.
