Weve got you covered with deirdre bolton, bryan llenas in new york city, and john roberts at the white house from where the president will soon be speaking. We began with deirdre. The fed does not have a vaccine against the coronavirus and thats essentially what set the stock market into a free fall, closing lower. You can see on your screen. More than 800 points lower as you alluded to, the first time the fed cut rates in between scheduled meetings since 2008, we know what kind of environment was, during the credit crisis. This stood out to investors and have the opposite effect. In many ways it made investors more fearful. Take of oak at the groups that put the most pressure on the markets. Financial, technology, energy stocks. Those were the ones that sold off the most. Keep in mind a lot of those are really areas where investors tend to bet on future growth. The idea of course is that the coronavirus is going to slow the global economy. That was the sentiment that guided trade today. If you look at the 10year, a historic low fat yield. Closed out the 10year below 1 for the first time ever. This often happens when investors dont know what else to do with their money. They bet on the safety and sanctity of the u. S. Government and if thats not sound, the implication is we all have bigger problems. We know that the fed chairman Jerome Powell says he hopes the rate cut would provide a meaningful boost to the economy. We also know President Trump would like more cuts. The president calling for more rate cuts even before the coronavirus outbreak. Here is the president. We have the greatest country in the world, the strongest country in the world. It is our dollar that the world relies on. We should have a low rate. We have a fed that doesnt agree with that. I disagree with them. As you know we have the president s argument, other countries Central Banks are keeping their rates lower and that we suffer unnecessarily by comparison if you like. One last note, proof of investor fear today. I want to show you the print on gold. Closing of better than 3 . 1642. 10 per ounce. Neil thank you. Significant Financial Development but overrun by fears that the coronavirus thing is going from bad to worse. Even if thats not the case. Try telling that to new yorkers dealing with the second confirmed case of the virus. Bryan llenas on that. Neil, the total number of coronavirus deaths in the United States is now 9. All in washington state. 18 king county alone. This is new york state confirms its second coronavirus. Its the first socalled Community Spread case which means we do not know how this person became infected. He did not travel to any of the hardest hit coronavirus countries like italy or south korea. The man is in his 50s. He lives in new Rochelle Westchester county, a suburb north of new york city. He is hospitalized in manhattan and is in serious condition. He had an underlying respiratory condition. Them out as a lawyer who works in a Small Law Firm in new york city. Disease detectives are now working to trace anyone he could have come in contact with. Seven people in his Manhattan Law Firm are being followed up with. Thats with the disease detectives are going to trace. Not did you walk by someone in the hallway, not where you on the bus with someone. Did you have regular, prolonged contact . The mans family is quarantined at home. Two of his children are being tested, one who attends the sar academy in the bronx. That child does not have symptoms. As a precaution, the academy and the high school have voluntarily closed. The other child attends Yeshiva University in new york city and lives in the dorms. He is showing symptoms. Two families have been isolated in their homes in buffalo, new york. They had recently traveled to italy. Neil. Neil bryan llenas, thank you. The president touring the National Institute of Health VaccineResearch Center this afternoon. As his Coronavirus Task force meets. We are hearing from the president of a couple minutes. He returned to the white house along with hhs secretary alex azar and dr. Anthony fauci from the nih. The president spent some time there at the campus in bethesda with a roundtable, also toured a vaccine facility. As more and more cases emerge in the United States, i asked the president if he thought it was inevitable that the virus would expand beyond other state borders that we have seen and really go across the country. Heres what the president said. Well, anything can happen but i wouldnt say inevitable at all, no. I wouldnt say. Weve done a good job by doing it and combating it so early. We have the best people in the world. And i think were getting a lot of credit for having made that early move. I dont think its inevitable at all. While he was at the nih, with nine deaths as you mentioned in the United States, the president was asked if hes prepared to take more steps to limit traveler close the border to certain countries. Listen to what he said. We are looking at different areas. Will make that decision with these professionals. What about closing the southern border . Is that still on the table . We are not looking at it very strongly. I dont think weve had any great evidence that areas a problem. Upon return to the white house, dr. Anthony fauci said he hopes to begin the first test of a vaccine, stick the first needle in the first test patient within a month. President also asked about a payroll tax cut and whether he would support that to get the economy going. He said he would be open to it if he could get democrats to sign onto it. Neil thank you very, very much. To nebraska where they are starting to release patients under observation for the coronavirus. Four have been released on 11 remain under watch. They were all passengers on the diamond princess cruise ship. The governor of nebraska is with us. Governor, thank you. What is the latest . So far things with folks in the quarantine are coming along. We are doing regular monitoring and testing. Four travelers were released and are on their way home. Neil people get worried when they hear about people getting released. Were they release too soon . And you update us . The cdc standards were to have to test that would turn negative with in 24 hours apart and the university of nebraska medical center, we did three tests 24 hours apart. We are going above and beyond the cdc guidelines. Thats what gives us the confidence that these folks are ready to go home. Neil very early on in this country, you are dealing with that earlier than most, how would you advise governors, mayors to deal with this . I think the important thing is to be communicating with everybody. One of the things we are doing is trying to make people aware that they should prepare for this. In our state, if you have a snowstorm, you want to make sure you have supplies at home if you end up being quarantined in your house, if schools close, youve got to think about child care. Make sure your prescription medicines refilled. Make sure youre practicing good hygiene. Wash your hands, dont cough on people. Cough into your elbow. Make sure if youre sick youre staying home. These are the things we can mitigate the potential spread of this. We want to educate people now before we start seeing the impacts of coronavirus hitting our communities. Neil do you advise those who fight the government saying that you need to quarantine people or hold people, i guess it just is what it is, right . I think we want to do whats going to be right to protect the general safety of the public. Right now we have the only federally funded quarantine unit. We are ahead of the curve in nebraska in dealing with this. We have the first group of folks coming from china that we helped in quarantine. We have been learning with regard to how to handle patients. I think it is actually one of the ways we can mitigate the spread of this. People who are sick should stay home and not infect other people. Neil governor, thank you very, very much. Now to the president of the United States at the white house commenting on the developments. Dr. Fauci is here with along with our secretary and a lot of progress. They be to start and then well have the doctor say something. We had an incredible visit at nih, the National Institute of disease. The president got to hear from the scientists who within three days, within three days developed a potential vaccine for the Novel Coronavirus and they reported some really Important News to the president. That yesterday the food and Drug Administration authorized the entry of that vaccine into phase one safety clinical trials. Dr. Fauci. What we did is we have the opportunity to take the president and show him the actual individual researchers doing the things weve been talking about. What they are referring to is that the actual scientists, middle level, sr. , junior where they are explained to the president what ive been explaining. Showed it in graphics how after the virus was identified, the sequence was taken and put into this platform called messenger rna and what happens is literally within a period of a couple days. We were going to go into a phase one trial. About three months from that day, probably a month or so. I dont want to overpromise. I said a month and have the other day. It may be a month or so. Very soon we will be sticking the first person with the vaccine. But i want to caution everybody thats only the first stage of the development of the vaccine. We emphasized to the president that this will be giving the vaccine to normal, healthy people. Safety is very important. You need to know that it actually works. That next stage is a phase two trial. We are not going to be able to start that for at least another three or four months after we go in. Theres a whole process. Its going to take a year, year and a half at least. Do you want to talk about therapeutics . The other thing that we explained to the president and the secretary already knew, the difference between testing a vaccine and testing therapies are almost qualitatively different. With a therapy, youre going to give it to somebody whos already ill and you compare it to standard of care. So within a reasonable period of time youre going to know if it works or not. Right now as of today, there were two large trials going on in china that are comparing one of the drugs, and there are several, with the standard of care alone. When we get those results which likely will be several months. Youre going to have to accumulate hundreds of patients to decide. We have our own trial right now in the United States, some of the people at the university of nebraska who were affected and put there. Once you get the results with the therapy, unlike a vaccine which takes quite a while, once you get a result, you can start distributing the medication. Reporter [indistinct question] no, i didnt say that. I said if the drug works and you prove it works, you will treat them. I am not saying that three months from now we are going to have a drug to treat people. Okay . If it works. No. No. I didnt say. I had said you have to accumulate enough patients. When they get 400 patients in each trial. That made take three months or five months. I dont know. When the trial is over and they evaluate the data, if the drug works, then youll be able to apply it. Reporter [indistinct question] i havent seen it. I am focused on this. The country is in great shape. The markets are in great shape. I am focused on this. This is very important. Reporter in addition to the fed acting. You suggested i like middle income tax cuts. It would be a good time. If the democrats would approve it, i would go along with impaired reporter payroll tax . Payroll tax, yeah. I would do it if they can approve it. Reporter in terms of travel, spring break is coming. Should americans be concerned . Would you let your son go to disney . We have a lot of great places we can travel to right in the United States. We have a lot of great places we can travel to. Reporter [indistinct question] how many cases we actually have right now . Oh, estimates. We can only have confirmed cases. We dont estimate other than the 60 cases we have from here in the United States that are confirmed as well as the 48 cases that we have that came from our repatriation activities. We are very careful to not try to extrapolate or predict with an unknown virus here in the United States. Reporter [indistinct question] its up to them. Let them stay in the United States. If they dont travel, if they stay here, thats not a bad thing for us. I have been saying for a long time people should do that. Reporter [indistinct question] no, i think they couldve done i think they should do more. I think they hinted they are not going to do much more thats unfortunate. He gave a very bad signal in my opinion. Reporter mr. President , are you considering. Neil the president wrapping up. Where we stand right now. The world bank announced something the president would not no doubt like to hear. Immediate funds to help countries dealing with a health and Economic Impact of this, over 60 countries including china. He had been looking for more action from the Federal Reserve beyond the half point cut weve already seen. They are monitoring it on a daybyday basis. Peter doocy in vermont where senator Bernie Sanders will be today. Keep in mind all of that voting still scheduled across some 14 states, encompassing better than 1350 delegates at stake. Bernie sanders rolled up to his polling place today driving the sanders family Subaru Forester with his wife jane in the passenger seat. They had a bernie 2020 sticker in the window. The staff is here setting up for what they hope is a victory party. It could hold more than 2300 people. I happen to believe that if were going to defeat donald trump, our campaign is the campaign to do that. We have the grassroots movement. All over this country. We have knocked on some 2 million doors all across the country from maine to california. Sanders home, but biden is in delegaterich california today, the biggest prize of super tuesday. Making a lastminute push that hes the consensus candidate now that departed democratic rivals like buttigieg and klobuchar and beto are in his camp. He thinks hes going to meet that threshold to give delegates and he thinks hes going to win a number of states. Biden was asked how he thinks Michael Bloomberg might be affecting him, and he didnt really want to go there. Biden also said he does not know how he might be negatively affected by peeking after so many people voted early. Neil thank you very, very much. The fallout of this polling lies with frank luntz. You know, frank, this is clearly the backdrop to voting today, this coronavirus thats rattled the markets. The Democratic Candidates have to sort of pivot to this issue. How do they do that . Its very difficult for them because its not impacted the economy and frankly we dont know enough for it to make a difference. This isnt just about policy. Bernie sanders talks about medicare for all. Hes clearly the most progressive of all the candidates. And he focuses on issues. Biden is running a much more attribute related campaign. Having been a partner of barack obama, the most popular democrat in america, and having led the country as Vice President for eight years. You have an attribute candidate versus an issues candidate. Mike bloomberg, the third person, the challenge for him is that hes the advertising candidate. Very foo voters have met him or seen him in town halls. They only see him in the debates are ads and the challenge is to get over 15 in enough states to remain credible after tonight. Neil im wondering if voters, stepping back, of any persuasion, that was contributing to the selloff in the markets isnt so much the up and down again nature of the coronavirus but politicians, you know, arguing i want you to respond to this because i think it gets to the core of the problem. Everyone seems to be acting pretty childish. Probably end up with crazy bernie. A president who is a pathological liar. Mini mike. I know him well. I knew that was going to happen. Probably the worst performance in the history of president ial debates. Get me off this stage speaking of natural disasters, i will get to donald trump in a minute. For sleepy joe, he doesnt even know where he is, what hes doing. The days of white supremacist hatred, having a friend in the white house will be over. I guarantee you. Remember i said i have more indian blood in me than she does and i have none. You cant just have a guy who believes in magic as president of the United States. Oh, come on. The things he says about himself, he must believe in magic. Neil the only reason why i showed these examples, its an Election Year and i get that. But we do have this background of the coronavirus other concerns that the arguing and Everything Else at least should ease a little bit. They childish cheap shots on both parties should ease a little bit. It might be naive but im wondering how people are digesting all of it. Youre not naive. You are courageous because you speak truth to power. Ive been doing focus groups for the last three months and its depressing to me. Even the democrats are now fighting with each other internally. The debates turning chaotic. Its not the way an election should be run. We need a series focused on issues and attributes because both matter. We cant take those cheap shots. It encourages the voters to do that and it discourages a reasonable, legitimate, civil conversation. I say this for fox news viewers, cnn, msnbc, those who watch networks of those who get their information from newspapers. Weve got to stop. This coronavirus is serious on this much more serious than we realize. Its going to hi
