Meteorologists Rick Reichmuth on how big a punch this hurricane is packing. And phil keating in florida where fears of that category three storm have a lot of folks there bracing. We begin with Rick Reichmuth and the fox weather center. Hi, rick. The radar picture, this comes out of puerto rico. This is their radar. Gives a good sense of what were dealing with. The storm kept jogging to the north and recenters. That spared puerto rico and spared the storm from big mountains that would rip it apart. The storm intact and will stay intact. That means what happens next has now a bigger impact for the mainland u. S. A. The u. S. Territory spared. It will continue to pull to the north and continue to pull away from puerto rico. So still some rain to fall there. That rain isnt going to be anything that will cause huge problems. The eastern side picking up 3 to 6 inches of rain and that will cause flooding because the weekend state is still in after hurricane maria. That is the satellite image of the storms. Pulls off to the northeast. As it does so, now the conditions become much more favorable for strengthening of the storm than weve seen the last couple days. The last couple days, conditions were not very favorable and strengthened anyway. Now we move into more favorable conditions. Thats why official forecasts brings it up to a major hurricane by the time it get here along the eastern seaboard. The two most reliable computer models are not in agreement. Because of that, we dont have a great sense of what will happen. One of the most reliable one pulls this across the florida and into the gulf. If that happens, we would have a landfall on the Eastern Shore and another landfall somewhere probably in the panhandle of florida, maybe over the eastern louisiana. Another option is it gets pulled up by a weakness that will be coming from the north and potentially bring impacts to north florida or georgia. What we do know, there will be something close to the eastern seaboard sometime this Labor Day Weekend so many people thinking theyre going to be traveling and vacationing on labor day. Not the case here. Neil thanks, my friend. People are boarding up in puerto rico as you might expect. Rick leventhal is there in the middle of it all. San juan. Rick . Neil, that drift to the east is a relief here by the folks, the three million residents that live here and were devastated by maria. They have been getting ready. A lot of the stores on the main drag boarded up. We can show you the fox storm cam. Its been lashing the tree. We may not need it here in this particular storm, which is good news for the folks in san juan. It does provide weather data and live images. Neil, if we show you the beach, there are people out here because its not raining. So theres folks any the ocean even though theres red flag warnings because the surf is considered dangerous right now. Off on the horizon there, you can see dark clouds. Looks ominous. Not apparently what the biggest fears were that they might get slammed here and that could trigger mudslides and flooding on the streets if they got up to ten inches of rain. So good news for puerto rico sounds like. If the storm continues toward the east. Bad news ahead for the mainland and the state of florida perhaps where phil keating is standing by. Lets go to phil keating in miami with the latest on preps there. Hi, phil. Hi, neil. Getting into the International Airport in san juan no longer an option. You cant fly there either. Not that you would want to at this point. All major air carriers cancelled the flights in and out this morning. So essentially most of the day the regional and International Terminals have been closed. As for the cruise vacations, the major lines, carnival, royal caribbean, disney, started changing them money. Several are skipping san juan and st. Thomas. This is web cam footage of the port in st. Thomas where you can see the massive cruise ships. Today empty and raining. Several cruises changed their schedules flipflopping ports of call. Navigator of the seas cancelled their stop in the bahamas. Allure of the seas changed their vacation cruise from the Eastern Caribbean and those islands to the western caribbean as did symphony of the seas. The coast guard shut down all Maritime Operations in san juan late yesterday. All of that remains closed. Things could reopen tomorrow. It all depends on what happens for tonight. For florida, people up and down the coast have been stocking up on water and nonperishable. Still a few days out. A lot of uncertainty to where this eye hits the sunshine state. Neil . Neil phil keating, thanks very much. How bat could things get . Were just revving up to the hurricane season. Joe bastardi is with us. What do you think . This last a classic bend in the track to the west, which is usually an ear mark of a major intensifying storm. If you go back and look at i talking about the track in two or three days. Its moving north, to the north. It has avoided what we wefer refer to as a cribbian gauntlet. Its just in the extreme northeast caribbean and moving to the atlantic. It will continue this northwest bath the next couple days and then turn to the west. I fear when it turns to the west, thats when you will see it become a major hurricane. So there are two different computer models that are that we look at quite a bit. The one that has it further north is usually the one that breaks down the big High Pressure to the north too quickly. We noticed it over the years. Its a new version of that model. The other model is taking this right through south florida, South Central florida on into the gulf. Ill tell you, one of my fears is that in 1947, for those that dont have the track there, went into ft. Lauderdale as a category four or five and then went back to new orleans. This one at this time looks like well see some kind of landfall between ft. Lauderdale and Daytona Beach during the day sunday or sunday afternoon. I think this will get back in the gulf. The ridge of High Pressured is void by this walk warm. So in the wake of aaron, when that moves out, the high will build back in. When it does, it will point that storm at florida and northwest and back to the west. That is a path that is notorious for intensification. Neil so what are we looking at seasonwise . The season itself, we dont expect a lot of storm activity in the caribbean and in the main areas. What we tried to emphasize, storms will be stronger north than to the south. Thats what youll see here. You saw that barry developed right off and erin developed like this. The ones that try to come to the caribbean will stay weaker than what they will do later on in their career. Overall, its a little below normal as far as what we call the ace index, neil, but i think the problem in scattered seasons when theres a big High Pressure over the northwest atlantic, the United States tends to have higher impact. Its a little bit like the state of the union speech that happens in america. Its all being portrayed some sort of terrible trick that boris is playing on the british people. Its actually a normal thing. Neil so is there anything to stop the brexit, you know, decision to move, to go ahead and bolt from the rest of the European Union . How do we leave . Do we leave with a clean break brexit or with Withdrawal Agreement that has been put to Parliament Three times and then rejected. Heres my concern. Much as boris has brought great optimism and energy to the job, things that President Trump has identified, it looks like he wants to go for an amended form of that Withdrawal Agreement. That would still leave us very tied to e. U. Rules and would mean we couldnt do a trade deal with the u. S. A. For several years to come. So what im doing as leader of the brexit party is putting as much pressure i can on boris and say come on, we spent three years waiting to do this. Lets get out with a clean break brexit and get on with our lives. Neil the fear is if you did that, there would be hell to pay and your british talent has been tumbling on the concerns that this will hurt you more than the europeans and the rest of the world. What do you say to that . I spent 20 years working in economics before i got in politics. Its always the old thing. Sell the rumor by the fact. Frankly once the u. K. Has left the European Union, if you do it the clean way, investment will flood into the United States because we will be free of greece and italy and these economies that are doing so badly. The argument against leaving are those from the status quo. The big firms that were doing very well. And life is like that. You always get the big and the rich that want no change. Actually, the time has come not just economically to change but democratically. Why should my country be run by unelected bureaucrats in russells . I want to be free. Neil obviously i think you know what is happening there better than i do, but maybe Boris Johnson is forcing europes hand here. You say you wont renegotiate the deal. The clock is ticking. You better or were out. Of course. Look, a lot of this is negotiation. I do think Boris Johnson talking tough on no deal is because he actually wants the European Union to make adjustments to the deal that mrs. May put in place. My argument is this. The deal may put in place with amendments has been a terrible deal and the worst deal in history hand im going to campaign for a clean break brexit. When were clean, we could by christmas have central trade agreements with the u. S. A. How bad is that . I wonder whether the europeans are more worried about this than they let on. Its a club that you dont want to be a part of. You mentioned what is happening with some members like greece, italy, portugal, spain, that are struggling as members of that european community. Maybe the europeans fear belgium fires more to the point that you go, all bets are off. I think thats right. You know, us breaking free, two years down the road seeming to do well will be the end of the European Union. And of course, the European Union is at the heart of the globalist project. Brexit, trump winning, big fightbacks against globalism. Globalism is about losing a democracy, losing your independence, losing control of your borders. So at the moment, we are with this brexit battle, were on the front lines of something that doesnt just affect us, it affects america and affects the whole of the western world. Its from money from half a dozen multinational banks and businesses. Doesnt suit men and women that want to set up enterprises or democracy that our forefathers made so much sacrifice to defend. Neil other polls show the president s strongest asset is the economy. 37 say its getting worse. That just struck me as odd. What did you make of that . I think all the chatter about the recession thats going on in the media has taken its toll. Its taken a couple points off of his job Approval Rating and his economy ratings. Hes still over 50 on the economy. But look, this is all going to come down to how voters feel about the economy next august, next september, next october before they go to the polls. Again, its also about perception. Do they still we can talk about some of these esoteric numbers, but it comes down to consumer confidence. How they feel about wages, how they feel about bank accounts, 401 k s and what is the alternative. If they dont feel as good, what is the alternative . Is it bernie or Elizabeth Sanders .
