Trade tiff is full on between the u. S. And canada. So the Trump Administration as you referenced put tariffs on canadian aluminum and steel. Americans will be paying more as of yesterday for any product that has those two ingredients. Heres the retaliation list. Youll see a lot. Canada imposed tariffs on metals and a slew of wideranging products. As of yesterday, you can see the metals but american whiskey, coffee, maple syrup, ketchup and the unknown here is that canada said they targeted American Goods for which theres a canadian alternative. If you take a look at ketchup. If their favorite is heinz, they will have to buy a canadian brand or pay more. Heres some of the other goods that were targeted by the canadian government against the u. S. Imports. Chocolates, dishwasher, gas stoves, motor boats. If a canadian wants to buy these, they have to pay more. As far as the u. S. Trade tiff with china, the one that we have against china comes in two waves. The first will apply to more than 800 chinese goods worth 34 billion. That goes into effect this friday. The second wave close to 300 goods. That still doesnt have an implementation date. Heres what the chinese are putting against u. S. Goods. So if a chinese wants to pay more, they will have to. So you can see by the categories, its a lot of food and agriculture products and things to eat. Its a continuation on the theme. So far as what were doing with china, the difference is were not focused on any of their Farm Products on consumableconsumabl. Were trying to influence areas that they want to grow. Like industrial categories. The made in china 2025 plan, thats what were trying to block. Not many things affect consumers. Its more Big Industries like aero space. Neil but a long way from steel and aluminum. Yes. So far people are absorbing this but it goes higher to the 200 billion figures, well see. Neil we started with two items. When all is said and done, china, canada, the European Union and india follow up with tariff actions, were talking better than 880 products. Thats just for starters. Garrett tenney with on how all of this is being handles in washington. Garrett . Throughout this process the white house has reiterated the whole end goal here is better trade deals all around. As weve seen, the president views tariffs as one of his greatest weapons to force other countries to making better deals. Now with the e. U. And canada considering additional tariffs, President Trump is threatening to slap a 20 tariff on all cars coming into the u. S. , which would be a massive blow to the e. U. In particular. This weekend, the president told Maria Bartiromo that despite all of the public blowback that hes gotten, his strategy is working. Were going to make it reciprocal, make them fair and i will tell you that you dont know about this, but every country is calling every day saying lets make a deal. Its going to work out. Now, the white house is not showing any signs of backing down either. May be ramping things up. This weekend axios reported on a draft ball that would allow the president to raise tariffs at will without congressional approval. The white house isnt denying this. In response, Lindsey Walter said its no secret that potus has had frustrations with the unfair imbalance of tariffs that put the u. S. At a disadvantage. Hes asked his team to develop ideas to remedy the situation and create incentives for countries to lower their tariffs. The Current System goes the u. S. No leverage. The white house stressed this draft bill has not been reviewed and theres not current plans to roll it out. It does give us some insight to what strategies the president may be considering going forward. Neil . Neil thanks, garrett. What is interesting ahead of this briefing any second and theyll address some of these trade issues, the market was fascinating. Down about 200 points and belief this is going from bad to worse and rebounding that maybe we can avoid it all. There was a comeback in Technology Issues for a separate reason. One day does not a trend make. But its safe to say that it trades on the prospect of trade. The worse it looks for a deal, the worse it looks for stocks. Katherine what do you expect will happen on this when everything is said and done . Its a negotiating tactic. Its a dangerous one, neil, without a doubt. But china has been cheating for decades. The u. S. Has been incapable of curbing the theft of intellectual property, incapable of improving the trade imbalances with regard to unfair terms of trade. I think this is a negotiating tactic and can get some we have gotten some weve made some territory with the chinese since the threats have been made. Im not going to say a full blown trade war is the Global Economy can rub that off. That is not the case. I do think this is a negotiating tactic and i think the administration is pragmatic and hopefully we get better terms and not a worse case scenario, which is a full blown trade war. Neil what is interesting, we looked at g. M. And one of the issues and one of the companies that has warned, this drags on, jobs could suffer. We could suffer. The country could suffer what do you think of that . I think g. M. Is a perfect test case for this. Look at g. M. They have about three million cars consumed in the United States and 4 million built and sold in asia. They get around the tariffs by putting productions overseas. I hope katherine is right about this being a negotiation. But its different to threaten the tariffs as it is to put them on, which is just has happened. You hope its a negotiation tactic but theyre playing a dangerous game digging your heels in, getting into a trade war, we dont have any friends. We have canada, mexico and the e. U. Getting together to negotiate how theyre going to deal with us. We had asia as a block. 28 trillion in gdp. Not just china, getting together and how theyre going to deal with us. Were isolating ourselves, this is not america first. This is isolationism and its scary. Ill jump in there. We did get data out today. The u. S. Economy is blowing all of the others out of the water. So i wouldnt say that the u. S. Losing here. In fact, the u. S. Came out above 60 in manufacturing. Germany lower. China lower. U. S. Equities doing fantastic. So look, i think the combination of tax cuts with trade policy, we have to face facts here. The u. S. Economy is doing great. The markets are doing fantastic. I would contend that decades of failure with regard to chinese neil what worries me, the possibility of unintended consequences here. You touched on it. Our markets have held up. Theyre doing very well. The chinese market, well into bear market territory. Back to early 2016 lows. Hence the president s argument that they need us more than we need them, but they dont appear to be budging. Where is this going . I hope neil john first. I hope this is a negotiation and these things go away. This administration has had these bellicose statements come out and they backed off. Thats been the history. Thats what the market is hoping. When you look at the economy, our economy is doing great. Thats what you wish the market was trading on. The gdp numbers are growing to be huge. The big reason is because youre getting the goods shipped before the tariffs go. So youll see that come off in the fallowing two quarters. That wont be a sign the economy is doing gang busters. Were hurting our American Business if we start a trade war with the entire world that is the fear. Shepard katherine, we talk about the gdp. It could be over 4 , 4. 5 . The atlanta fed says its going to be a strong number. Are you . Look, neil, i want to throw something out there. The u. S. Is no longer a big manufacturing power house. Its an intellectual property, big exporter of electronic content. Thats the biggest point in the that that renegotiation. Thats what we expert. Its been stolen. Bill clinton, a bipartisan issue. President clinton complained about this. This is something that i think the Trump Administration is traying to attack and hey, on im not in favor of tariffs at all but im in terms of trade. I agree with free trade. But we have to get real. Free versus trade. And we had the election in mexico. A populous u. S. President. The two biggest most power houses in the nafta organizations. Theyre both populous. This will make for noise in the future with regard to free trade in north america. Neil were getting that populous noise right now. Thank you very much. I want to bring in Ari Fleischer and get his sense of this ahead of hearing from one of his successors. Ill go to sarah first. This morning, the department of justice and the Fbi Joint Terrorism Task force announced the arrest of an ohio man for providing Material Support to alquaida. Sunday the suspect explained to an undercover fbi agent that he was planning to conduct an attack in cleveland on Independence Day and a future terrorist attack in philadelphia. President trump commends the work of the doj and the fbi for stopping this attacker. To continue the ongoing work of denuclearization on the korean peninsula, secretary mike pompeo will be leaving july 5 to meet with the north Korean Leader and his team. The state department will release more details about his upcoming trip. One item that you may have missed last wednesday is the confirmation of robert wilkey. Hes been twice confirmed by the senate. Most recently last fall by unanimous consent for his current position as undersecretary for personnel and readiness at the department of defense. During the hearing, mr. Wilkey not only demonstrated that he has the experience to lead the v. A. , he spoke in depth about how he shares the president s vision to put veterans first. Senato senators isaacson and tester have expressed their support. With that, ill take your questions. You called on me before my husband . Its a tough battle. I did, for the record. Let the record show. Ill take a question. You got it. During the this is a big moment. So i had to give it understood. If the president it would tweet about it. All right. During the campaign, the president said im pro life and ill be appointing pro life judges is. The president still committed to appointing pro life judges . As the president said last week, hes not going to talk to judges about specific cases. Hes looking for judges that have the right intellect and temperament to uphold the contusion. Susan collins says she wants a nominee to respect precedent and roe v. Wade is settled law. The president is not going ask the candidates about specific cases but hes looking for somebody that meets those qualifications that i just outlined. Is it important to him to continue roe v. Wade . Is there any concern the president has based on over the weekend reports out of north korea that they are continuing on with their nuclear program, making efforts to enhance it and in any way seeking to deceive this administration about his denuclearization intentions . Were going to confirm or any deny any intelligence reports. What i can tell you is that were continuing to make progress. Ambassador kim had a meeting yesterday with members of the north korean delegation and secretary pompeo as i just mentioned will be headed to north korea later this week and well continue those conversations. You say youre continuing to make progress. How can the public evaluate that progress . A number of things. Youve not seen missile launches. You havent seen nuclear detonations. These conversations are continuing to evolve. Im not going to get into the details. I can tell you that progress continues to be made. Who are the four judicial candidates that the president it wasnt me. I can clear that up. I know you were curious about that. Again, the president is being very thoughtful about this process. Hes looking for certain characteristics, which weve outlined and beyond that, i can tell you that he met with four people today. The meetings lasted roughly 45 minutes and hes going to continue meetings through the rest of the week with a few other candidates. Can you comment on the cbs report today that judges cavanaugh and barrett are now at the top of his list . Im not going to get into anymore of the process other what the president said. The president wrote on twitter, House Republicans should pass the strong but fair immigration bill known as goodlatte bill. Sunday he wrote on twitter, i never pushed the republicans in the house to vote for goodlatte one or two. Why would the president lie about that . He didnt. He talked all along, we laid out the priorities and the principles that we support, that we wanted to see reflected in legislation. At the same time, the president wasnt aggressively bobbying members because he knew that democrats in the senate were unwilling to come to the table and focus on Solutions Rather than playing political games. We could have gotten it through the house but it doesnt work if we cant get to it the senate. The democrats have made it clear that they dont want to fix problems. They just want to talk about this all the way i guess for some reason they think this is a good issue for them although it isnt. Frankly i think its outrageous that democrats have not come to the table and tried to help fix this problem. Margaret . There was a report that that kind of maybe was on the table that sounds solid. The president would invite president kim to new york around the u. N. I wanted to get that on the record if you can put that in context for us. Is that in play and is that really something that he would consider doing . We dont have any announcements or plans to roll out at this point. So without getting into all of the wording, the president said two of the five that hes looking at for the Supreme Court are women. Were any of the people he met with women . Im not going to get into those details. John . Thanks a lot. Following up on that question. Is this an important consideration for the president , getting a conservative woman on the u. S. Supreme court . This president would like to see somebody that meets the qualifications that ive laid out and thats what he focused on. If i may, on trade, canada responded to the steel and aluminum tariffs that the president has imposed already on imported steel and aluminum. What is the response from the white house and the president to that action by canada . Weve been very nice to canada for many years. They have taken advantage of that. Particularly advantage of our farmers. At the g7, the president proposed that they get rid of all tariffs and all barriers and have great trade. They refused that. Escalating tariffs does nothing to help canada and only helps American Workers. The president is working to fix the broken system and hes going to continue to push for that. Jordan . Thanks. The National Security adviser john bolton appeared to leave the door open recognizing the russian annexation in crimea in his upcoming meeting with vladimir putin. Will you rule out the u. S. For acknowledging that annexation or is that on the table . We do not recognize russias attempt to annex crimea. And our sanctions will remain in place until russia returns to peninsula to the ukraine. How about a possibility would recognizing the annexation be on the table if russia agrees to certain concessions . Im not going to get into any negotiations at this point. Following up on north korea. The president has declared on twitter there was no long area Nuclear Threat from north korea. Even putting aside these reports about the intelligence material. Theres also commercial satellite imagery showing activity going on at these north korean sites related to uranium processing as well as the missile facility. So does this Administration Believe that theres no longer a Nuclear Threat and also john button on face the nation said the bulk of the program could be dismantled in a year and experts say 10 to 15 years. Can you clarify on that . We continue to make progress. As i said, the secretary of state will be there later this week to continue those discussions. Im not going to confirm or deny any of the intelligence reporting out there. As far as the oneyear time line ambassador bolton said if they makes a decision to denuclearize, can it be done within a year. Theres great work being done on the negotiations. Friday the president said one of the topic with president putin would be elections and we dont want election meddling. Does that mean he plans to raise the midterms and does he have any proposals and things specific he would like to hear from president putin about that . Well keep you guys posted and updated as things develop. Jill . Does the president believe that obradors election will have an impact on nafta . Theyve had a very positive and constructive call that lasted about a half hour. They talked extensively about trade and the willingness for both parties to come together to make a deal. Well continue to focus on making sure we get a good deal for the United States. Is the president worried about his comments this morning Michael Cohen is going to flip and has he considered paying his legal fees . Im not going to ask questions on this topic and would refer you to the outside counsel. Picking back up on trade. The e. U. Has responded with retaliatory tariffs. Canada did so over the weekend. Mexico has done so as well. China has put their tariffs on as well. Is the United States winning this battle and if so, how . Again, the president is focused not on the short term but the longterm. He wants to make sure that were doing things that help protect American Workers and protect american industry. Mess going to keep pushing to make sure that we have good trade deals. Weve been in deficits with nearly every country across the globe for years. He wants to make sure that continues . How long is the longterm . Theres folks impacted by this. Is the longterm weeks, months, years . How long is the longterm . Were not setting a timetable. Theres a lot of difference negotiations going on. Weve made progress on a number of fronts. The
