♪ >> hopefully it was a big hole because santa is heading home. soon voters start heading to th polls with an economy that look like it is they're top issue on their minds. welcome everyone and merry christmas, this is a special edition of your world. in less than a month until iowa and new hampshire, many americans aren't feeling too festive about their bottom lines . in new poll shows 78 percent of voters think the economy is in bad shape with a lot of the blame falling on the white house . will this be a key factor? let's get the read from our holiday political panel. lauren, let me start with you. everyone's talking about the economy. >> well, i think that voters don't just care about the economy, they care about a better life, they want a better economy and a better life, they care about healthcare prices, they care about abortion access. and they care about holding corporations accountable for price gouging and for continuin to charge high prices even as inflation comes down, so that i the that they are looking for. it's up to the republicans and democrats to stand up and say who is going to meet the challenges and concerns. >> i understand the spin doesn' stop on christmas, however, however,. >> are you going to be mean to me when i'm wearing santa hats? >> why don't you have a year's resolution to stick to the resolution. i'm just joking. really, everything i'm reading is the exact opposites, they ar not an anti- corporation thing. people are sincerely upset, worried, and afraid and wall street seems to think it's goin to get worse. a lot of people looking at the slowing economy slowing further in 2024? >> i think people are feeling that too, they see the inflatio still impacting their kitchen and table budget spirit that's where we see people most anxiou on a personal level that prices for things they need are still high, so that's why they feel that the economy is going poorl regardless of whatever the economic indicators are, they feel it's in their budget, so that is with some driving a lot of this pulling. second, i've had lots of conversations over the past couple of weeks of how nervous employees are feeling about the market, about the economy and what they see for 2024, fearful of layoffs, you're full of market disruptions in 2024, so even people that would normally have strong corporate jobs and feel that they are doing well are still feeling nervous going into this economy in 2024 because of everything going on is as far as those indicators and what they are getting from their ceo pride i think you're dead right that while we can sa that democrats are doing all these different things, people are not feeling it, and at the end of the day if they're not feeling it, they're not going t vote for it. >> i was reading in article and the atlantic and they called it the english muffin problem. they say it's a messaging problem because the aggregate data is pretty good. think one of the problems with the agora aggregate is all household households which mean it feels like all of the games continue to shift to the very wealthy which is ironic because i know president biden is alway rallying against the rich and the ultrarich, but they have benefited more than anywhere else under his presidency. >> think voters are dissatisfie and they were certainly dissatisfied when trump gave ta cuts to the wealthy almost exclusively, so they are certainly against that but when you dig deeper into this data, nothing that's been said here i completely inaccurate but when you dig deeper into the date that they care about the health of their family not just the country, they care about not just their kitchen table, but they're whole house. they care about jobs, good paying jobs, and they care abou the big picture, they care abou issues like abortion as an economic issue so you have to look at a larger picture. you will see when you dig down there is hope that democrats will win on the issues that voters care about most. >> let me just say, i think one of the problems is that may be an issue more of communication more than anything else as the democrats keep telling people how well-off they are our. last week you had a op-ed in th wall street journal telling the middle-class are doing great. voters are saying i'm not doing great and the ministration from president biden on down keep saying you don't know what you're talking about. to get that's not what i said there, charles. to me it's insulting. if i tell you something is wrong , listen to me. that's what they elected you for . >> the election is a long way away so a lot of this will be overdue and there will be other issues that come up. right now voters are saying wha to be done for me lately and wh are you listening to me. that's what you see in the polling with key democrat voter blocks, black americans, young americans, there has been a significant decline in biden support, lots of apathy because what have you just described there. you're saying it, but i'm not feeling it, i think it also plays to what we're talking about with wealthy voters wealthy americans are going to feel differently about this economy than the lower income from people who just graduated college who are starting out an don't have to market to get returns in that way. i think that's where you see democrats have to fight the hardest just to reassure andrea energize some of the key voting blocs. it is a communications issue, the campaign is going to involv really going back to those base and telling them what they've done just to continue to put a finer point on it, the student loan debt that biden has had to send e-mails directly to the people that he wiped student loan debt for because he faded even though he had done it. that is a huge problem going into 2024. ladies, merry christmas, we are going to be doing a whole lot o this in 2024, so i can't wait. we'll talk to you again soon. >> merry christmas. >> you are paying a lot more at the grocery store, a new report showing christmas and holiday meal prices are around 7 percen up from this time last year. how our customers dealing with this? who better to ask lynn ceo, always great to see you. when icu i know it's a festive time no matter what the economy is giving. you know firsthand, you're in the frontlines of all of this, how are people making these adjustments? >> you know what, look very if you look at it even for us righ now, we have hired a tremendous amount of people come out we've got almost 3,000 people we've had to raise our starting rates by $3 an hour, our chefs we've had to raise, we've had to increase that. so for us to produce something the cost has gone up. fuel prices have leveled out, energy prices are still up, but as a family business that we have, we have to manage expense and we try not to pass as much as we can come, but we try not to pass it on. two give you just have democratic strategist on that kind of brought up this issue. i don't think it's caught on that they have tried hard to blame all of this on great flashing, they have focused in on your market more than any elder. these boxes of cereal keep getting smaller, and the prices keep going up, where has it all gone? everyone kind of understood the supply-side issue, but they're saying that seems to be resolved , how can prices of food isn't coming down also? >> one thing, about our store, we are 80 percent fresh, so we are writing a commodity market, depending on the weather, the prices go up and down on certai products. lots of the prices in the markets, you look at the center of the store all of those consumer products companies, there has been such a substantial increase in ketchup mayonnaise, and just things on the shelf like that. i think you are seeing elderly larger increase of prices on those items then you do more on the commodity side of it. >> so when you control, you control, but some of it is out of your hands. listen, you make a fantastic point about the wages. we all want everyone to do better, people go out they go for higher minimum wages, but that focuses on the economy. >> charles, you know what, i'm all for giving great benefits, and we do that at stew leonard, we've had to raise our starting rate $3 an hour, that's a lot o money. i can't absorb all of that, you've got to pass a little bit of that along. one thing that has been up and will show you, this is your favorites, i knew you were goin to bring one of those out. we will save this for you, but meet prices are up probably the most right now. the herd sizes, i've talked to our ranchers in the midwest, they've had to drop their herd sizes because of the drought an having a hard time feeding and watering them so they've cut down on the herd sizes. so we are seeing an increase fo this holiday right now. >> one thing you always do is you say okay, there's alternatives, when somebody goe to the supermarket and prices are higher, americans want to find value, are you able too at least, what are people moving towards that is sort of surprising you? >> our some players want to increase their sales and everything to, so they're going to offer deals. if you put this on sale, if you put this on sale will give you deal on it so a lot of it we pass along on our ad, i would encourage everybody when they g to the store to look at the different app deals you can fin on your phone. another one is check out the private labels, there are some delicious private labels out there and those are usually 20 percent less than your namebrand private labels. lots of times that company will be making those for stu leonard's or for other supermarkets like that. check those things out. >> still, i've just got 30 seconds. a big question in wall street, it's got a lot of folks torn, i where is the economy going. even the federal reserve doesn' seem to know. do you feel like it is slowing so fast that we can go into recession? >> i don't know about that, charles. people are spending right now i you look at credit card debt, that is high right now. we are noticing they are spending right now for christma and they're new year's holiday, we are selling wine and champagne and people are buying right now. the question is during the normal leagues we usually find people are putting one less ite in their shopping cart, so they are watching what they are spending. they are buying what they need in not what they want. >> stewart, merry christmas, we always appreciate sharing these holidays with you, you always give us great insight. hold onto it, i'll see you in a hour and a half depending on traffic. >> happy holidays. >> you too, thanks a lot, buddy. what is a better stocking stuffer than cash?
