This is your world. Lets get the latest on where this starts with charles watson. Woe just got an update from the atlanta miss department. We learned that officers believe Deon Patterson is the possible shooter that walked in to the medical facility behind me this afternoon and opened fire with multiple people. Were told at least five victims were shot, one person was killed. Four others were wounded. Theyre at an area hospital being treated as we speak. The last 20 minutes or so, we learned more about the victims. We learned theyre all women. Their ages range from 25 years old to 71 years old. A 39yearold woman was killed in this shooting today. Neil, in the last 45 minutes or so, weve seen probably the most movement weve seen out here at the scene since the shooting was reported earlier today. We saw several officers, many on motorcycles, many in the armored swat cars move east of 14th street where were standing right now and make ten minutes or so, we saw another group of officers moving north of Peachtree Street. Were told that officers are actively looking for the suspect, Deon Patterson in the cobb county area. They say that he hijacked a car and is still on the loose. Police are not sure of where his whereabouts are at the moment. Theyve been in contact with his family. Were told that they are cooperating with this investigation. As far as the suspect goes, police say that he could be wearing different clothes than what the he was wearing in those pictures that they released earlier today from the elevateder from that medical facility. Theyre asking folks to be on the lookout for this individual. Theyre urging people not to go near him, to call 911. Because he is still considered armed and dangerous. As far as the midtown area and the last hour or so, we learned that the shelter in place has been lifted. So a lot of the folks that live and work and go to school in this area, they are able to move freely. Weve seen a lot of people pouring out of their office buildings. Many look confused and stunned by what has happened here today. We also spoke to some of the folks that work in the medical facility where the shooting happened. One woman in police, her name is desiree, she just described it as a traumatic experience. She says she heard the gun shots. She saw devastation and a lot of blood shed as she left the building, neil. Neil im thinking of the advanced Transit System in the atlanta area. Its possible that hes long outside the area right now. That is very possible. Earlier today, we heard from marta that they had suspected service in this area. All bus service and subway service. I walked out to the nearby marta station and i could hear the train moving underneath the ground. Im seeing folks as we speak walking towards the train administration. So we believe that service is restored right now. Again, folks are being urged to you know, keep their caution. If they see this individual, the suspect, 24yearold Deon Patterson, to stay clear of him and to call 911 instead of approaching him, neil. Gillian one question that youve been patient, but going to this Medical Center, obviously his intent to go to that place and go to that room where patients were waiting. Have they verified whether he knew any of them, were targeting them . Yeah, at this point in the investigation, we dont know if the suspect in this case knew anyone at this particular facility. We dont know a motive yet or why he decided to show up to this medical facility and begin opening fire. It has really stunned a lot of people here, including folks that work here. We got some sound from a woman earlier today that described her experience. If we could toss to it. Listen to what she had to say. I heard gun shots. I didnt know exactly what it was. I have never been in a situation like this before. I never seen someone shot down either. I saw blood on her face. It was too quick. They were trying to get us out. I saw blood on her face. A couple of coworkers got shot. I dont know what their conditions are. Yeah, neil, this is a clearly a traumatic experience for everyone involved. That woman said she doesnt know if she feels comfortable returning to work after going through this terrible situation today, neil. Neil understandable, charles. Charles watson. Well go back to him later on. The Atlanta PoliceDepartment Said all of this started around 12 30 p. M. As i mentioned a little earlier along the 1110 west Peachtree Street, northwest Midtown Atlanta. A very upscale region of atlanta. These things dont normally happen there. Steve harrigan is on the phone with the latest. Hi, steve. I was walking in that area just heading out for lunch when about 12 08, the sirens started flying. Saw a huge Law Enforcement presence. Sometimes driving against traffic to get to the scene. It was police, it was marshalls, swat teams. We have really seen in the past hour a real shift as this man hunt continues. It has now left midtown and moved north and west for cobb county area. Thats where they suspect the 24yearold Deon Patterson has hijacked a car and headed that way. Right now there was a shelter in place in midtown. Thats been lifted. Schools have also been locked down. Even Elementary Schools shut down. You cant pick up your kids in midtown. Thats been lifted as well. A 10,000 reward for any information. So they dont have him. They dont know where he is. They say his family is cooperating. His motive is not clear. Looks like he had a hoodie on, a mask on. He dropped the mask inside the elevator. Looked like he had a handgun and a lot of ammunition in a big around his chest. All five of the people shot were women. One woman that was killed is 39 years old. Four were taken to grady hospital, three in critical condition. Grady was prepared for a mass casualty event. They expected more but got four to deal with. This happened in a medical office bidding in midtown. The shooting took place inside The Waiting Room. One last point, neil. If you were down there this afternoon, you saw people in medical gear and hospital gear. Some patients, some doctors. Really traumatized. People crying and hugging each other. Some people in wheelchairs. Also, other people, civilians downtown, have never seen anything like this. They work there, they shop there, they have their kids in schools there. And now theyre afraid about what is happening in the heart of their city, neil. Neil understandable. Thanks, steve. Want to go to dr. Robert jansen. How are things liking there at grady, doctor . You cant share confidential information. I understand. But where these critically injured patients are right now. Thanks for having me on. We received four patients, three of them were critically injured. Three of those went to either the Operating Room or to procedure areas to deal with their wounds. Right now two of them are still in the Operating Room. Were still waiting to hear what happens from that. Neil and these were all bullet wounds, multiple bullet wounds. We understand that he scraped the medical Emergency Room and left. He wasnt there long but he did a great deal of damage. Those critically injured, all of them are multiple bull let wounds. Am i correct in saying that . Yeah. You know, its a striking thing that happens, how much damage can be done in a short period of time. Fortunately all of the people that came here were rapidly treated, received the best care that they could possibly receive. We had every resource available by the time that they arrived. So you know, the wounds are horrific. You know, were going to hope and pray for the best. Theyre receiving great care right now. Neil now, you were prepared for a mass casualty event. Any time theres more than one person involved, it would seem like that. But theres no indication afterwards that this spread beyond this particular hospital, this Medical Center, correct . Thats correct. Initially, you know, the reports that we got were a little bit confusing. We received word that you could receive up to 12 patients. Fortunately that was not the case and it was only four. We had gone ahead and prepared as if 12 people would come so we call a mass casualty event when this happens. We have all the resources waiting in the Trauma Center so a that when the patients arrive, they receive immediate car. Neil thanks, doctor. Its been a tough day for you and your colleagues. Dr. Robert jansen at the grady health, Chief Medical Officer there. I want to bring you up to date on this search for the shooter now going on for the better part of 3 1 2 hours now, almost four hours. The shootings occurred a little in to the noon lunch hour. About 12 18 p. M. I want to get Chris Sweckers thoughts, the former fbi assistant director. Chris, piecing this together and where this guy could be now, i know the marta and the advanced Transportation System well in atlanta. It spreads throughout atlanta. Greater proper atlanta. He could be anywhere. He could be. This is incredibly complex man hunt in a heavily suburban area. Downtown area. As you say, Mass Transportation all around. They shut it down quickly. Maybe not quickly enough. I dont know the timing of the abandonment of the stolen car, et cetera. Its a highly complex this is your Worst Nightmare as a police officer, Law Enforcement officer trying to conduct this kind of man hunt in this type of setting. We know hes desperate, we know hes erratic and spontaneous. He doesnt have this wasnt planned out, at least the escape wasnt planned out. So he could be anywhere. He presents a danger in terms of carjacking, could have taken over someones home. Hes probably still within that suburban area. They looks like they really dont have a good fix on the general area. Neil we know his family is cooperating or what small group of people they have contacted to give what information they could and can. Theres a 10,000 reward out for someone that could have any information that would lead to his capture. That was applied quite early, chris. I wonder what you make of that. Yeah, they want to shut down family and friends as potential aiders and abetters in aiding his escape. They want that incentive out there. Its likely to be also picked up by just bystanders, people that hang out downtown that are that are there during the day and they give them some incentive to call it in. You know, this looks like an incident that involved a medical facility. The mother was there. The mother is probably one that identified him pretty quickly. Someone that i think said earlier, may have been a domestic incident. I dont think thats the case here. Highly likely that those people that were shot were nurses. Clearly a beef against that particular medical facility. Neil we dont know to your point. We know the Police Originally issued a Public Safety alert for people that were working in the area, including at the hospital itself, chris. A broad lockdown that had been in effect in the immediate area and spread beyond the Peachtree Street area. Has since been lifted. Im wondering, that is making the assumption that the shooter left the area or is it . Strong indications that he left the area. I dont believe they issued the all clear in the midtown area, if that were not the case. So its the abandoned car, i listened to the press release, checked some sources. They feel confident that was him that abandoned that stolen car. That puts you thats his last known location, if you will. They are going to building out from there, check the he Mass Transportation outlets. They have a search on their hands here. Its all Hands On Deck, this person is armed with a pistol, may be more ammunition. Hes desperate and erratic. The entire public is in danger in that area. Neil knowing the marta system quite well and is advanced and had cameras everywhere you go, what city doesnt these days. Is there a capability of live monitoring . Authorities that can look at the images or videos or cameras in real time . I believe there is. Im sure they have a command im sorry, a console somewhere, maybe multiple sort of loosely refer to as the video camera Command Center where you can get real time images. Im sure theyre scouring through that, probably pulling video from the businesses near where the stolen car was abandon, this is a downtown area. Theres got to be a lot of video. Again, youre making a good point about the Mass Transportation. Ma marta, ive been on it as well. I think this person would have stuck out and we would have had reports about it, this is someone carrying a backpack, armed. Obviously desperate and extremely nervous. I dont see him calmly getting on a marta and not someone not noticing. Neil if he exited the area right after the shootings before we knew about this before we were getting images of him as we are now, its possible that he could have left and changed his clothes, maybe shaved. We just dont know. But in that brief window before it looks like the entire country knew what this guy looked and looks like. He had time on his hands. He did. Some people are still Wearing Masks out there. Maybe he i dont know if he i dont think his a sophisticated person in terms of having planned this out and planned every avenue of his escape. Hes making it up as he goes. Im sure hes taking some steps. There might be some communication of Mental Illness here. His mother referred to seeking ativan from the v. A. So i dont see this Person Acting Rationally and taking a real calculated course. I more see it along the lines of actually carjacking or home invasiontype thing and sitting still. Neil obviously the Atlanta Police seem to be handling this and addressing reporters. When does the fbi get involved in this sort of thing, if it gets involved in at all at this stage. Yeah, theyll offer assistance. Theyll have some people on the scenes. Atf as well. They always respond when theres a gun involved. Im sure they have all the federal help that they need. You know, the u. S. Marshals as well. Theyre the known fugitive hunters. This might come down to raw manpower and sat saturating the area. A tip could come rushing in and we could have a very tragic ending to this. Neil at this stage, since theyve been able to identify, know something about him, no doubt started, if they havent already, completely immersed himself in his social media accounts. Apparently he was active. Without a doubt. That can be done quickly. Theres various forms of social me media. Since the mother was there, they can get to the house if theres devices there. They may well be tracking his device as we speak. Any number of scenarios there. A different type of man hunt in this day and age than it was awhile back. Neil chris, if i can get you to step back. Youre so good at this stuff. The fact that this happens in an otherwise normal peaceful day, weve seen this again and again with shootings, even of this type. Rarely where the shooter is able to escape and sort of be on the lam. Im just wondering your take on these incidents and the uptick of these incidents. We dont know how this connects to any of those. Theyre singularly tragic. Your thoughts. Yeah, i really think theres a copycat viral nature to these shootings. Its not a coincidence that they just keep happening and happening. I think unfortunately the coverage of it im not criticizing the media. Theyre going to report on it. These are people looking to go out with some notarity. They see these other incidents. It just i think it puts the idea in their head, you know, this is a solution. Im going to go shoot something up, im going to get noticed and im going to vent myself. Whatever it is. Just seems to be a viral thing like many things are these days. Its not a coincidence. People say its the guns. I dont think its the guns. Its the people. Theres certain guns that i dont like to see in the hands of bad guys, but these guns are going to be out there. Its more along the lines of the accountability of the people and their individual situations and this viral nature of this type of thing. Neil its sad. We talked about this broad lockdown that was in effect. Its lifted now. But i noticed when it was put in to ekt, i think for the first two hours after the shooting, if you go by 12 15 eastern time, that was staying in effect until about 2 15, 2 30 p. M. Even through that, i noticed a lot of people especially with some of these aerial shots, just being in the streets. They were not fully cleared. Thats easier said than done to accomplish. Ive seen this before. People dont clear out. I wonder what you think of that. Yeah, theres i hate to say it, but these fluid situations like this, particularly in this setting, you know, versus a rural setting, is you think that the cops the Law Enforcement responders know everything going on and perfectly organized and good it together. Thats not necessarily the case. Thats not a criticism of the responders. This is the nature of this type of situation. Information doesnt always get to the right place. Doesnt get connected up quickly. And you know, theres it takes a long time to get more of a singular picture of what is going on in a singular Command Structure set up. As we described, the fog of war. Neil youre right, my friend. Chris, i always learn a lot. I appreciate you taking the time. Chris swecker, former fbi director. Helped this country out many times. For those of you joining us, were about four hours in a Shooting Tragedy in atlanta. Started about four hours ago. When a 24yearold man went in to a Hospital Center and just started shooting at a waiting room. He
