Consequences. If turkey does not take immediate action to pray this this innocent man of faith, the United States will impose significant sanctions on turkey until pastor Andrew Branson is free. Sandra a good evening everyone, im sandra smith in for an Martha Maccallum who is on assignment tonight. Following those remarks and a tweet from President Trump in the same vein, turkey fired back. Their minister of Foreign Affairs of tweeting this no one dictates turkey, we will not tolerate threats from anybody. Rule of law is for everyone, no exceptions. So who is this pastor that has punted such a forceful stand of support from the Trump Administration . Trace gallagher with a back story. After the failed coup against president erdogan in 2016, the government started cracking down on journalists, academics and christian minorities. Pastor bronson originally from North Carolina but who lived in turkey for two decades was arrested and jailed. He was held without charges for more than a year until finally being accused of dividing us are turkey by spreading his christian faith. Those who visited the pastor in prison say he lost significant weight and was under extreme stress. In april, a group of bipartisan senators signed a letter expressing concern about the situation. This week the Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed legislation that would impose unnamed financial penalties against turkey until branson is free. That action apparently is resonating because pastor bronson is now out of jail and under house arrest. Hes wearing an electronic monitoring device. Here is Vice President pence. Yesterday, turkey released pastor bronson from prison only to place him under house arrest. This is a welcome first step. It is not good enough. Secretary of state pump mike pompeo echoed that quoting now, we welcome the longoverdue news that pastor bronson has been moved from prison to house arrest in turkey but it is not enough. We have seen no credible evidence against mr. Brunson and call on turkish authorities to resolve his case immediately in a transparent and fair manner. Turkey is now pushing back against the threat of sanctions and analysts say more than 60 months of constant pressure from President Trump and his administration is what kept the story in the headlines. And that has not gone unnoticed by leading evangelical christians who form a key part of the president s face. Today tony perkins, president of the Family Research Council Called the threat of the sanctions, a clear and unequivocal message to the tyrants in turkey. And pastor bronsons family is once again hopeful. Still waiting for my dad to walk me down the aisle and im still waiting for that fatherdaughter dance. At for now the diplomatic dance has seen a rise in tivo. Sandra trace gallagher, thank you. Here are with more is bill bennett. Good evening to you mr. Bennett, thank you for being here tonight. What do you think of this strong show of support from the white house, from mike pence to the president , mike pompeo all stepping forward and threatening serious sanctions on turkey if they dont release this pastor. Bill there are a couple of things. I think you are using the right adjectives, strong. This was a muscular response. We heard the words from mike pence and we read the words mike pompeo. Of course, they are speaking for the president , and this was a very tough response. People dont remember, a lot of people forget that turkey is part of nato. These are very tough words for a member of nato and lately people have been critical of anybody who criticizes anything about nato from this administration. But i think its part of a larger pattern, sandra. Since helsinki i think the restriction has decided to project strength in a serious way, and i dont mean this cynically, but to remind people how many good things its doing. This was an instantaneous response for madeup response, they have been responding this way of the report showed for some time. But to emphasize the strength of the administrations response, combined that with the European Union agreement or the agreement to have an agreement that we saw, the president s remarks today, and i think we are reminded that this is an administration which is very strong and very tough, despite what some of the critics have been saying on the left. Who are clearly making the case of this is a muscular reaction from the administration. Will it yield results . One of the reasons i dont think you see many people clamoring for relief from turkey is, the second is a bad customer and a bad player and you dont see much sympathy there. We are reminded of the academic power whether it be iran or russia. I think about what liquid natural gas and oil could do to that gas station called russia once the pipe starts flowing. And sanctions on turkey can do very much the same thing. The world has not seen this kind of flexing of muscle and strength in some time, and of course the democrats were way too early and condemning donald trump as weak after the helsinki thing. He misspoke, corrected the mistake, but the one thing you have to Pay Attention to his policy. Policy towards russia and policy towards these other countries. If i could say one more thing, the other day we saw a master class and what it means to be a loyal and tough member of the cobb sonic cabinet. When i left washington, it would say, what did you learn . And is that i only learned one thing, you are either on offense or defense. An lsu fan would understand this. Sandra if thank you sir. I notice the dress. But on parts of that hearing, pompeo was on offense and did a great job. They didnt do dan coats in aspen, i love dan coats but he was shifting a little bit in the presence of andrea mitchell. And on their show of strength and the reference back to helsinki and before helsinki it was singapore. 8 00 p. M. Tonight, north korea is expected to start handing over the remains of a number of servicemen killed during the korean war. Are you optimistic that this is actually going to happen . I trust but verify. Ive been talking to people that are experts and im no expert but the people who are is it just that and argued that this is happening. I think it will happen, we will of course find out soon. And if and when it does that will put the lie to another thing which is we are getting nothing out of these negotiations. The minister in turkey and the remains of these soldiers and the marina, many of them, in north korea means the world to these families. The president understands that and the nation understands that and everyone has to applaud it. The one and the president has made it very clear that this is very important to him. Does it silence his critics, who said nothing came out of that summit with kim jong un . Bill no, the critics are in for the long run, until they can get him out of office which is their objective. Then maybe they will breathe a style of release. We hope for some conclusion for those families, it will take many years we are told before they can accurately be identified. Pay a few seconds left here, bill. If you could broadly speaking look at this president s Foreign Policy to date, how is he doing . Bill its new and its different and i think its surprising a lot of people. Remember the people who try to put alarm into the people for the election, hes going to blow up the world, hes going to push the button in the first six months, its a new order and it is a trump doctor and that is emerging. Its partly america first, partly be fair and be just, your share, and you remember, we are sick and tired and we are just not going to take it anymore. I remember when Jeanne Kirkpatrick address all of us and she said we are tired of being pushed around, we are tired of being the patsies and we go to remember that we are america, we are the last best hope. Not just of us but of the world. Thats becoming more clear every day and it needs reminding, it needs teaching in each generation. Thats why we need to learn our history, we need to learn what we need to do for other people. Sandra bill bennett, thanks for being here tonight. Still to come, could President Trump be charged with a crime because of his tweets . Constitutional attorney Jonathan Turley is here to answer that. Plus the president travels to the midwest to ensure that those hit highest by the escalating trade war in the white house is fighting for them. But was it enough . Sandra its no secret that our president likes to tweet, but tonight there are new concerns that he could be charged with a crime because of it. Of special Counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly combing through the president s twitter feed to determine if the president tried to intimidate key figures in the russia probe like Jeff Sessions and james comey. Something that could amount to obstruction of justice charges. Chief intelligence correspondence Catherine Herridge is live in washington with what we need to know about this. Based on its investigation, the New York Times reports that special counsel is conducting a wide ranging probe assessing whether negative statements and critical tweets by the president are designed to obstruct justice by intimidating witnesses and tamping down the special counsel case. The president s targets include attorney general Jeff Sessions. Tweeting in june, the russian witch hunt hoax and continues all because Jeff Sessions didnt tell me he was going to recuse himself. I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted in so many lives ruined. Sessions knew better than most that their was in collusion. Five months after this video was shot, james comey was fired. We later learned that, he gave memos, some containing classified information to a columbia law professor and his two lawyers. At least one of them documented a conversation with a president was given to a times reporter. On may 12th 2017, the president tweeted, james comey better hope there are no tapes of his conversations before he starts looking for the press. The house secretary said that twitter line inquiries wiry smacks of desperation. If we are starting to investigate people for mean tweets in washington, d. C. , we will need a whole lot more special councils. The Mueller Probe is so baseless they are literally down to trolling tweets. A source told fox news that the twitter issue was discussed many months ago when the lawyer doubtless acting as a trumps personal attorney. He insisted the president was well within his authorities as the head of the executive branch to terminate those positions. Sandra Catherine Herridge in washington. Here now, Jonathan Turley, constitutional law and attorney and law professor at George Washington university. Professor, thanks for coming on with us tonight. Can the president be charged with a crime over his tweet . They can be charged but not very convincingly. If you are charged to stitch together tweets for some criminal mosaic then you really are reaching the evidentiary dragons. A subject does not surrender their First Amendment rights to speak out in their own defense. The president is frankly someone who seems to play poker with the cards faced outward. That helps in many respects, and hes not just issuing these tweets with regard to special counsel, hes doing it on trade and republican and democratic critics. He is someone who communicates through tweets and it tends to be visceral in his responses. I dont see how you could possibly base a convincing criminal case on that type of social media social media. Sandra if this is it the case and we are going off of a report here, and the special counsel is looking at the president s tweets, particularly about sessions and comey, what does that tell you about Robert Mueller and his investigation . That would undermine his good ability and that of his investigation. It is another possibility that hes looking into these tweets as part of the report that congress, you might be that report as laying the foundation for Something Like impeachment. And showing that these tweets are part of the broader mosaic. I think reaching for the social media, the evidence is a sign of weakness. I felt the same way about the ports that use the president s tweets as a critical piece of evidence in the immigration cases. Ultimately that failed before the supreme court. I think this would even fail more in a much more spectacular fashion, to try to base a criminal charge on this type of stuff. You have clearly looked at the president s tweets over times, have you ever seen anything that stuck out to you that could potentially red flag Robert Mueller . I think the president is unwise to do these tweets, and they have made the life of his defense legal team a living nightmare. But i do not view this compelling evidence as a result of obstruction. I think you can see what his visceral responses are. It seems quite nonpresident ial, and these are forms of incriminating evidence that could actually support a formal charge. Sandra i have to ask you about these impeachment efforts on the part of the republicans. If you have jim jordan, mark meadows, leading these efforts to impeachment evidence. He stood up today to test Weekly News Conference and attorney general Jeff Sessions firmly standing behind his Deputy Attorney general today, listen to this. My deputy Rod Rosenstein is highly capable. I would Like Congress to do is to focus on some of the legal challenges that are out there. We need congress to deal with the immigration question. Sandra there was no vote today, and should they be doing this . Speak out they shouldnt and i have a column out. I happen to be very sympathetic with the people who have drafted these articles, and i do believe the Justice Department and they abuse the Classification Authority in redacting embarrassing but unclassified things. I think all of that is well supported but it doesnt make it an impeachable offense. The framers designed impeachment requires a very high standard. Rosenstein is worthy of some criticism. They have turned over more than his predecessors stated in this type of investigation. Has he done enough . No. Thats not an impeachment question. If they lower the standard for impeachment, it can really greed and instability in our system. By the way, with the house possibly changing hands in november, the least that republicans should want is to lower the standard for impeachment right here. There will be plenty of folks who already are on the other side and will want to do the same type of impeachment, but the name is going to be different. Sandra interesting stuff and we will see where it all goes. Nice to see you. We have some live pictures, President Trump is arriving back in washington after what was a very busy day out in the midwest. Visiting iowa and illinois where he focused on jobs, manufacturing and trade. Later on in this show, more on the president touching down there. A socalled shadow ban on some big name conservatives, but twitter admits it did make some changes.
