We want. The kid has a tshirt on that says aclu. This is the america we want. To which this twitter user responded a white kid with a flag . The bandwagon was jumped on by scores of people that were horrified and declared the image of that child was a sort of trigger for their emotions. A reminder of the charlottesville neonazis. The aclu says these hateful torch holders, that they have the right to march and fired back with a panic. They said when your twitter follows keep you in check and remind you that White Supremacy is everywhere. Heres reaction tonight. Heres katie, Fox News Contributor and juan with the five, this is astonishing, this just draws everyones attention to how thinskinned this mob out there in the internet world is and how quickly they can force everybody to turn on a dime and make sure theyre okay in online mob land. Juan, what do you think about this . The example like the espn one is driven people that fear what come from the online maybe. You get knee jerk reactions. People anticipating that theyll be skewered subjected to scorn as you described it and then they say, we have to react preemptively and do something. That is a wonderful, happy picture. I dont care what race the child was. They had a subsequent picture of a child in a uniform that had a nazi symbol on it, the swastika. I thought that is not cool. I didnt like that. I think that is negative. You dont want that out there. Nonetheless, what you see are people we acting because they fear the mob rule online. The mob online, by the way, they delight in putting down someone. Could be someone on the left putting down somebody on the right putting down their political opponent. Theres no discussion. Its just that were smarter and better than you and im going to be crueller and meaner in my criticism. Let me show you the further response from the aclu national. This is the future we want. More babies in onesies. We can think this and laugh and think they respond with the green kermit the frog or the blue kermit the frogs. The real issue, this is a very dehumanizing situation. For them to look at an innocent child and see neonaziism and White Supremacy is disgusting and disturbing and sets a predense that i dont know if weve been through in this country. When you cant look at a child and say its a photo of a child. The thing that it does, it trivializes real racism and real problems. Charlottesville is nothing compared to an innocent baby holding a flag put out by an organization that claims to represent everyone. Apparently they think that innocent white babies can put in the same category of white supremacists. And Megan Mccardle said its like were in worlds biggest small town. Shes talking about the mob rule. The content gossip, the prying into your neighbors business, the quarrels that develop into feud. You cant move away. Theres one internet and were stuck here the rest of our lives. She makes the point i thought it was a terrific piece. That proximity used to be the basis in which you had one social cohesion and be subjected to coercion, which is mob rule. Now you dont have to be in proximity. If you want to put me down, you dont have to be sitting next to me and saying juan, youre a jerk, blah, blah. You can get online and do it anonymously. Nobody can say, oh, martha said that. Why would she do that . No, martha is anonymous and joint by people of like mind that may have some Common Ground with you on one point but now its like a bubble and youre shooing it off. Its bullying. Its cowardly. They know that theyll have a negative impact on ones life or just spouting off because they feel like they have a platform and not understanding the severe consequences martha its hugely effective and does just that. It can ruin your life, ruin your career, ruin your job based on something that you put out there that received backlash. Thanks so much, you guys. Very important discussion that water going to continue here on the story. So this is part of it as well. The nation obviously in a state of heightened sensitivity because of charlottesville. But where does it stop . A chief justice cheneys statue was removed from the state house. Our next guest says his removal opens the door to erasing all kinds of historic figures that could in effect sanitize our history. Jonathan turley joins me now, a constitutional law attorney. He wrote an excellent piece on this. Tell us why you think he deserves a broader understanding here . I think the broader understanding has to be how we evaluate history. The dred scott decision is a mark on the nation as is civil war and slavery. He played an important part in that, a noble part. But seven justices signed on to that opinion. Theres plenty of opinions throughout history that we consider to be deeply wrong and troubling. Buck v. Bell is where Oliver Wendell homes said citizens could be involuntarily, you know, operated on so that they could be sterilized so they could not have children. Lewis brandize signed on to that. Are we going to start taking statues down, memorials, when we object to the decisions . We had the decision in bowers v. Hardwick which said that homosexuality could be criminalized. Its deeply wrong and troubling. Sandra day oconnor signed off on that opinion. Do we take those memorials down . The question is, are we going to remove those monuments to justices who ruled in ways that we now find quite troubling or are we going to add to those memorials information like what is being done at the Jefferson Memorial. There will be an addition placed on the Jefferson Memorial saying that he was a slave owner. That is one of his great contradictions. Martha in many ways adding to the monuments is what becomes more of a history lesson. You think about the taney decision and dred scott, which as you read the language of it, its obviously from a very different era and reprehensible in its approach to the people of this country. However, you also pointed out that we probably wouldnt have had the civil war without the dred scott decision. So these are the moments in history that push forward the steps that bring us in our evolution to where we are. Yeah. And taneys words are deeply unsetting. At the time there was a dissent in that case that redeemed the court to some degree. Taney viewed it as a states rights issue as did obviously virtually all the other justices on the court. He himself freed his slaves and gave pensions to the slaves that he inherited. That doesnt mean he wasnt a racist. He did not join the south. He stayed with the north during the cival war. He was viewed by Abraham Lincoln as one of his opponents. All that creates this mix of history that is not easily divided between heros and villains. This statue was there for 150 years. Kids could learn more by going to the statue and saying this is someone that wrote something that was terribly wrong. Martha learn from the mistakes of the past and the complicated history that brought us to where we are today. Jonathan turley, thanks very much. In the wake of charlottesville, a United Nations panel is branding the whole United States as a place where people need to be very concerned that this is a racist nation. John bolton is here with his message for the u. N. Stay out of the u. S. Affairs. Martha President Trump reigniting his battle with Republican Leadership this morning. Tweeting i requested that mitch m. And paul r. Tie the debt ceiling legislation into the popular v. A. Bill that just passed for easy approval. They didnt do it so now a big deal with dems holding them up as usual. Could have been so easy. Now a mess. Now ed henry joins me live with more. Its not just the debt ceiling fight that washington is picking up for. I think were going to see President Trump taking on a bigger role in publicly selling tax reform. Something that we did not see with healthcare. That is due in part to the fact that hope hicks is now the acting communications director. Someone very senior that can get the president more involved. The white house is focusing on public support for tax reform. The president is often his own communications chief. Hes not part of the swamp, but it complicates the push for his agenda. The president charging arizona jeff flake is weak on the border. That could help a republican in the midterms. The president is betting his warm words for dr. Kelli ward could help him. The president had another tweet. He said the only problem with Mitch Mcconnell is after hearing repealing and replace for seven years, he failed. That should never have happened. While mcconnell tried to patch things up, Sarah Huckabee sanders did not seem as accommodating when a reporter asked about bob corker recently charging the president has not shown the stability to govern. This new administration in washington and this congress is interested in getting america growing again. Put another way, taking our foot off the brake and putting it on the accelerator. Do you have any response to that . Thats a ridiculous and outrageous claim and doesnt dignify a response from this podium. And Speaker Paul Ryan tried to talk up taxes at boeing headquarters. Ryan was asked how many influence he has at reigning the president in. He said its a daybyday deal and added he was joking, kind of, martha. Martha thank you very much. So many left to wonder why the president is choosing this strategy and going after some of the members of his own party. Heres Mark Thiessen and Fox News Contributor. He said the president shouldnt do that. Hes written about that eric beech says yes, he should. Kelly ward is here also. Thanks for being here. Mark, lets start with you. When you look at this and you look what the president is saying, hes angry that they havent been able to pass his agenda, they havent been able to get healthcare through. Who knows what will happen with the tax reform thing. And then paul ryan saying we cant do anything except a c. R. Or get the debt ceiling done. Later on, well get to the budget and real tax reform. What is taking so long . Hes right to be frustrated. But absolutely right. Im frustrated quite frankly as well. The lesson of the obamacare fiasco and legislative fiasco happening up there is that 52 republicans is not enough to get 50 votes. What happens is when you only have 52 republicans, then john mccain is the swing vote who can deny donald trump his agenda. So the solution is to not go after republicans that are reliable votes. Jeff flake votes with donald trump 94 of the time. I understand why donald trump doesnt like him. He wrote a book about him. 94 reliable vote. Dean heller, a 90 reliable vote. Voted with him. So you need to add to our majority, not reduce it. Dont spend our energy, time and money and donald trump should be spending time and money attacking republicans that vote with him. He should be going after the democrats that vote against him and spending his energy trying to increase his majority so john mccain isnt the guy to decide whether we repeal obamacare. Martha i want to play this attack ad that goes after the person you support. Embarrassing behavior. Dangerous ideas. No wonder republicans rejected her just one year ago. Thats coming from her own party, rick. Yeah, look, martha, donald trump won in november because he understood more than anyone the peoples agenda that includes more jobs, better trade deals and more importantly, to secure our border and building a wall. A few senators have undercut that agenda, most notably jeff flake. Jeff flake didnt vote for donald trump. Has profited off a book writing about donald trump. So the question i ask mark and many others, why wouldnt we support a candidate that has the will of the people behind her . That is kelli ward. So i look at it where the Republican Senate leadership has a real opportunity to be the open party, open tent party. We should invite people that really are in line with the peoples will and really this Trump Coalition agenda. This isnt your Old Republican Party in 2004. This is something that people can get behind and kelli ward is that condition did it. I ask that question to mark and others. Sure, ill answer. First of all, you have to get donald trump support. He pulled back from endorsing her on monday at the rally in phoenix and meeting with other candidates. Hes not sold that kelli ward is the solution. Put aside kelli ward for a second. Youre an extremely talented political operative. I wish you used your talents to go against vulnerable democrats instead of republicans. Why would you go after someone that voted with donald trump on obamacare repeal, going to vote with donald trump on tax reform, votes with donald trump 94 of the time . Go against tammy baldwin, bob casey, Sharrod Brown martha eric, what are you doing with your talent . Yeah, come on. Thats the first time ive been called talented. I appreciate that. I ran the largest pro trump pack with ed rollins who mark knows well. Good friend of mine. We support this Trump Coalition agenda. We will be participating in this election cycle against those democrats. Once again, we dont have a governing majority. Mark mentioned, we have 52. Why not get to 56 . What is the nobody . 60 is the number. We saw in the healthcare debate right now we only need 50. We didnt get 50 for something that has been promised for seven years. Healthcare reform. We need more republicans, not less. We dont want to lose arizona and nevada. Martha i got your point. We have to go, guys. Thank you very much. The president lashed out at media critics saying the fake news is complaining about my different types of backtoback speeches. There was afghanistan, somber. The big rally, enthusiastic, dynamic and fun and the american legion, v. A. Respectful and strong. Too bad the dems have no one can change tone. What triggered that tweet . Just before that, cnn ran the banner, President Trump wildly swings from uniter to divider and morning jo went with a tale of two trumps. The president careens from stayed to wild and back again. Are they justified . Lets look at parts of the recent speeches. In months to come, all of them will honor the sacrifice of every fallen hero. Every family who lost a loved one and every Wounded Warrior that shed their blood in defense of our great nation. It is finally time to rebuild our country. To take care of our people. And to fight for the jobs our Great American workers deserve. Thats what were doing. And we will never tolerate crime in our cities. Blood shed in our communities. Or acts of hatred or terrorism against our citizens. Martha so there is a look at what got that very sharp reaction from a number of people in the media. Joining me, ari fleischer. Thanks for being here. You look back. Im thinking back to president obama who did sort of have a tone that he carried throughout most of his speeches. Apparently that seems to have rattled some folks in the media. Yeah, you know, look, theres criticism of donald trump that is significant and worth while, this is meaningless. This is the lazy days of august and dont want to focus of the content. I have never known a politician that didnt speak differently at rally. Rallies are to get people fired up and get passionate and nothing that donald trump hasnt done for two years that hes been in public life. Martha it feels look at the conversation that we just had, ari, when we talk about republican infighting essentially. You get the sense from the president that he feels that he has a connection to the people. That perhaps he doesnt have clearly with many members of the media and with the folks on capitol hill. Theres almost a sense in recent days from him that he so what . Im sticking to my agenda and im sticking to what i believe and what i think if jeff flake isnt on board, i dont want him there. Replace him with somebody else. Thats what youre getting here. Sure. When a politician loses popularity, they look at the remaining face they have, the left or the right and say these are my people and ill never let them down. The challenge to trump is not just keep his base, but to grow that base. Donald trump needs to get his popularity into the 50s because that will help him win democratic votes on legislation and keep all the republicans in his column on legislation. His problem is muc
