Isis homicide bombers move in on a base housing hundreds of american troops. Isis terrorists capturing a small town right here on the map really close to on outpost where thor than 300 marines currently training Iraqi Security forces. The militants reportedly made it to the gaits that close. But were taken out by iraqi forces. Coalition air strikes also taking out small units nearby. But it all went down so fast that even our own helicopters and drones were sent in but didnt get a chance to fire a shot by the time they showed up. Chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge is live for us. Glad to have you safe back from gitmo. But youre still working hard. Now we have this latest attack on the base. What do you know . Gretchen military officials in washington are putting the best possible face on the incursion thshgs is the first time a limited number of isis fighter vz come so close to penetrating the base perimeter. A former Intelligence Officer who was stationed in 2006 tells fox news the base is gigantic and territory rain offers no natural defense. The idea that 320 marines can hold the perimeter 24 7 and at the same time train the iraqi army, this source said is simply not credibility, especially if isis maintain as persistent presence in the neighboring town gretchen. So what is the latest intelligence assessment on this isis threat . Well, this morning one of the most credible voices on the threat, former head of the defense agency, Michael Flynn testified before the House Armed Services committee and flynn said in every way, recruitment, financing, the threat has grown significantly in the last year. Have the unhappy task of informing you that according to every metric of significance islamic extremism has grown over the last year. And the threat has grown despite the u. S. Led Coalition Bombing campaign with the pentagon confirming another seven strikes over the last 12 hours. What critics say is too slow a tempo of operations to be effective. And another witness testified this morning that isis is now gaining a foothold in syria which is a watch in weapons. Many reportedly dumped in the region di qatar and being described by the administration as an ally. You are seeinged emergence of what looks like an Islamic State affiliate in labia. Its a completely ungoverned space and its now a civil war, total polarization. Thats having disableizing effects on east and west. Remember at the same time we had that new atessment earlier this week that there are 20000 foreign fighters now in iraq and syria. This is a flow of foreign fighters that has really surpassed any other conflict in the last two decades. Catherine herridge thanks for the information. As the pentagon ramps up the fight against isis, critics are taking aim at the president s strategy. The enemy must be killed and destroyed and the associated extremist form of the islamic ideology must be defeated whenever it rears its ugly head. Byron york is chief Political Correspondent for the washington examiner, Fox News Contributor as well. You know, its interesting byron because over the past couple of days with the president s proposal it seems to me like hes kind of in a nowin situation. The democrats arent happy. The republicans arent happy. Dow see it that way or differently . Absolutely. Nobody is happy with it. By the way, nobody is taking this as an urgent priority. Theyre leaving for a tenday recess not doing anything about this. Its clearly not even at the top of their list. But remember back six months ago when the president started the offensive against isis, a number of members of Congress Said you cant do that. You have to seek our congressional authorization before you can. So he said, no i dont need that. He went ahead and did it. Right. Now he has sent this thing, and republicans think it is far too limited, far too timid. Some democrats think its too open ended. So nothing may happen. Does it just show that our government really cant get anything done . The other side thf is, its going to take them ten days off or not until april, april, to even finalize i mean, isis is killing people every day. Theyre beheading people. Theyre threatening to take more people hostage. I dont get it. Well the president , as commander in chief, is really in the drivers seat and he is conducting the campaign against isis that he thinks is appropriate. A lot of republicans think it is way too little. You just heard Catherine Herridge mention the seven missions we had in the last 24 hours. They think its way too sluggish. It not going to be effective. There needs to be more american advisers and personnel on the ground. But the president is in charge here, and he has shown that he can just go ahead and do this without congressional authorization. I think in the end republicans so much want to approve of an offensive against isis they may end up approval something less than they would actually really like to do. Thats very interesting. Byron york thanks for your thoughts today. Thank you, gretchen. We have another alert to tell you about because brandnew images in day three of the murder trial of the man who allegedly shot and killed american sniper chris kyle and his friend at a texas gun range two years ago already. His attorneys are fleshing out their insanity defense. Were about to show you the dash cam video from that tragic day released just today. Will carr is live in stevenville, texas. Will, what have we learned more about Eddie Ray Rouths drug use today . Reporter for the past couple of days weve heard about routh using marijuana and drinking whiskey the morning before he went and shot chris kyle and chad littlefield. This morning, a dekttective says he found Drug Paraphernalia pipes, a bottle of whiskey and 50 rounds of 9 millimeter ammunition in rouths house after the shooting. He also said it smelled like pot. The detective then indicated that he found prescriptions for routh including antipsychotic drugs. Throughout the morning routh took copious notes for the most part he hasnt shown much emotion throughout the course of the trial. On the other side, this has been a very emotional couple of days for taya kyle. She showed up for court this morning after testifying wednesday and seeing gruesome pictures of her dead husband yesterday. So far she has not issued a statement to the media since the start of the trial. Some of her very Close Friends have taken to twitter and are asking for the countrys thoughts and prayers. Gretchen . So what have we learned about that exact moment that routh shot both of these men . Reporter well, late yesterday afternoon, the medical examiner presented some very gruesome pictures and then presented autopsy pictures. We learned that routh shot chris kyle six times. He shot him in the face the shoulder, the arm and the side. Evidently he thought littlefield seven times in the back and at the top of his head and the back of his head. And after the shooting, he stole chris kyles truck, which was actually captured by dash cam video when Police Officers were chasing him down. And between that chase and the shooting, routh actually took the stolen truck, went to taco bell and bought two bean burritos for 2. 36. Because the answers you need may be closer than they appear. Fox news alert. Im going to take you back to the pentagon where rear admiral kirby is giving an update to the attack in iraq, very close to a base there and 300 United States marines. Lets listen in for a minute. I wouldnt pretend to know. Important also to make mention that the Iraqi Security forces continue to operate in and around al anbar and continue to put pressure on isil. Weve said from the very begin tlgs going to be ups and downs, gives and takes here. I dont think we should make more out of this. Im not saying were dismissing the seriousness of the potential breach here or of the increased activity by isil, but we ought not make more of it than needs to be made of it. This is arguably the first in at least a couple of months if not more, where they have had any success at all at taking any new ground. So this is an enemy that we still assess to be in a defensive posture. Its one town. Its not all of al anbar. Its not all of iraq. We need to keep it in perspective. Given whats happened in the constant mortar attacks and rocket attacks do you think the iraqi forces are trained well enough to protect that base, considering how sprawling it is . Are there enough of them . Are you concerned about the security situation with so Many American theres . Im always concerned about the security situation when you have americans out there like that. And weve said from the beginning of this, one of the reasons why and yall were beating us up because we werent able to tell you we were getting to these facilities fast enough one of the reasons why we took a little bit more time putting american troops out there is to make sure force Protection Measures were in place. And in this case, those force Protection Measures proved more than adequate because they didnt get inside the base. Iraqi Security Forces were there at the scene engaged them immediately and the attack failed. Nobody said that again al anbar doesnt remain contested. Of course it does. And nobody has underestimated and weve all been very honest about the continued threat this group poses which is why we have to take it so seriously and why this mission is to important. I think when you look at what happened today, i think it proves that the iraqi Iraqi Security forces can fight effectively and can defend territory and ground when theyre ready and theyre able. And in this case they were ready and able. That might be one of the pieces much good news in this situation, that the iraqi forces actually did defend. There were 300 marines justs behind that gate when isis came in. Were just getting an update now from john kirby. Well bring you more details as they come in. In the meantime the family of an american man missing in syria is calling now on the u. S. Government not for a special unit on the ground but simply for more information. Its a scenario similar to the foley family. They grew desperate for news about their missing son who was later killed at the hands of isis. We didnt feel jim was a priority, even though we were told that from the very beginning, that he was. And just to trust, that everything was being done. But we dont have much evidence of that mainly because of very poor communication. So a few detail bz the man whos missing right now. Austin tice disappeared in syria august 13, 2012. Hes a former marine, always a marine, who went on to become an Award Winning freelance journalist. He attended home school. He was an eagle scout. And here are his parents, deborah and mark tice. Its so great to have you on the real story today. I know it takes a lot of courage for you to come on and talk about your son whos been missing now for almost three years. What kind of communication have you had from our government that they are looking for him . Well, you know, we had communication within a few days of determining that austin was out of contact and missing and weve had ongoing communication kind of ever deepening communication across a number of departments and agencies and now even with some of the white house staff. You know, the communication has been constant. Its the content that we feel like could be a little deeper. In what way, deborah or marc . What are you talking about . Well, were not really given very much information. We feel certain that theres more information that could be shared with us. Its not shared with us because we dont have the appropriate clearances and were not vetted. As ive said before i feel like god vetted us when he gave us this man for our son. So i think all the Information Available should be available to us. You are his parents and we are seeing photos of him right now. When was the last time that you spoke to him or heard from him . The last time that i interacted with him was on his birthday august 11th of 2012, and marcs last communication with him was on the same day as everyone elses last communication, which was august 13th. I understand that we have a photo of him where it shows him blindfolded here but you dont know how did you get this photo, number one . And do you know where he is or when it was taken . Well the photo i think that youre looking at came from a video that was posted to youtube i think september 26, 2012. The title of the video was austin tice is alive, 47 seconds long. Have you received any other information, mrs. Tice, since that time to know where he might be, who has him . No. We do not know where he is. We do not know who is holding him. What we do know is that he went missing in syria so weve reached out to the Syrian Government just as anyone would if their child went missing in another country. And so, you know, were appealing to the Syrian Government and to the United States government to do everything they can to find and bring him home safely. If by chance, your son austin is listening right now or gets this video and can see his parents, what would you tell him . Austin, you hang in there. We spend almost every waking moment trying to get you safely home, and we will see it done. We love you. We love you. And many, many people are doing everything they can to get you safely home. So hang in there. Debra and marc, i dont know how you do it every day. Lots of us are parents watching myself included. I feel for you and i pull for you and hope that we resolve and find your son. Thank you so much. Thank you, gretchen. Thank you very much. Thats a touch interview. Coming up on the real story, massive fire tearing through the Islamic Institute in houston.
