FOXNEWSW The Real Story With Gretchen Carlson October 15, 2014

Are helping to push back isis fighters, but they still control half of that town. We are also awaiting a briefing from the pentagon with admiral john kirby, who is expected to address new relations from the New York Times that weapons of mass destruction were actually found in iraq, but kept secret. Much more on all of that in just a few minutes. First, breaking details on the ebola crisis as we learn more about the Second Health care worker diagnosed now with that disease. We are not reporting her name yet, but we do know she was on a front ear Airlines Flight 1143. This happened monday night the day before she reported symptoms, although there are reports now she did have a low grade fever before she got on that airplane. That flight went from cleveland to dallas. Well, then what happened . Thats what we dont know. The mayor of cleveland will have a press conference about this. President obama cancelling Campaign Events to meet with cabinet members in response to the crisis. Ed henry has more on that. As this crisis grows, the white house is intensely focussing on the governments response today. Right . Gretchen, theres no doubt you can feel the intensity growing around here. The president , were less than three weeks away from a Midterm Election. He was planning to be in new jersey for a fundraiser, big Campaign Rally for the governor of connecticut tonight. That has been at least postponed. He has more on his calendar tomorrow. Theyre currently weighing whether or not theyll delay that as well. You mentioned this meeting, very urgent meeting, 3 30 p. M. Eastern time. The president convening some of the cabinet secretaries to get to the bottom of the government response sxishgs think an important issue to note is that Sylvia Burwell, the health and Human Services is suddenly taking a much more hands on role. You saw her on some of the network tv morning shows today instead of dr. Frieden, for example, from the cdc. Both of them were just on a Conference Call with reporters, and, again, Sylvia Burwell was taking the lead. Listen to what she said. Well, weve done a lot. We know that there are opportunities to do more and better and were doing that. Wherever possible, were learning from our experiences and redoubling on our efforts to continue to improve processes and procedures. Rear doubling our efforts. Obviously, there will be people around the country wondering why the administration did not take necessarily that more handson role much sooner. Josh ernest will be briefing reporters right behind me in the next ten minutes or so. You can bet he going to get a lot of tough questions like that. Will he get the tough questions because the president is now on defense again because some of his previous statements about ebola just are not adding up now. You know, youre right, gretchen. Just a few weeks ago the president was down in atlanta, cdc headquarters. He said at that time it was highly unlikely we would see ebola here in the United States at all. Obviously, now we have at least a few cases and concerns about whether theres anything else out there. That has turned out to not be true. There is a briefing at the white house with other officials on october 3rd where they said they were highly confident they were going to stop this. They say that they would still stand behind that because there has not been a major outbreak here in the United States, but, remember, also october 2nd, dr. Frieden was saying any hospital in this country could handle ebola with whats happening right now in text technical, that is obviously in doubt as well. Credibility is a big question. This is certainly not the kind of crisis the president wants to be dealing with less than three weeks before Midterm Election where leadership is front and center. Ed henry live for us at the white house. Again, that briefing will happen in just ten minutes. We will probably dip into that. Thank you, ed. This is video of cleaning crews outside the home of the second patient now in quarantine at presbyterian hospital. Were told that they are consulteding with emory hospital in atlanta about the possibility of transferring her to that facility. This as we learn that the first ebola patient is in Good Condition and remains in isolation at the texas hospital. Steve rooney is it a registered nurse and president of the National Federation of nurses, and he is my guest today on the real story. Mr. Rooney, i can imagine that within the nursing ranks across the country, today is not a good day. I might disagree with that some. We know how to take care of sick patients. We do need to be better prepared. We need more training, and we need to be directly involved to insure that the current recommended guidelines are being enforced. Right. I mean, what i meant by not a good day is we two nurses now who were in some contact with eric duncan, thomas eric duncan. We dont know if they were high risk or low risk, et cetera. Now theyre both sick, sir, and thats what i meant is that many people across the country now are worried about nurses and other Health Care Professionals who have been in touch, any contact with ebola victims. Yes. And our heart goes out to those nurses and to their families. We as nurses still we are going to be taking care of the patients, and we need those that training and the preparedness to be able to go in and do that. What about some of the accusations that another nurses union has put forth with regard to what was going on at this texas hospital . For example, that there was not enough protective gear. I want to put a picture up on the screen so that our viewers can see that on the left this is what the cdc recommends that nurses and physicians have on when theyre treating an ebola victim. As can you see, the head is not fully covered. It looks like the gown is different material. On the right is what Doctors Without Borders use when they are actually in west africa. Is this what you are talking about, sir . We as nurses want to deal with facts, and we do not know what went on in the hospital. Nor does any other outside nursing group, and until we understand what went in, we cant comment on, speculate what went on inside that hospital unit. Okay. But just in general, do you believe that nurses are getting enough training all across the country, lets say in des moines and seattle, in charlotte, North Carolina . I think its obvious by the fact that two nurses were infected that they didnt quite they didnt have the training and the preparedness necessary at that time, so we all need to be ready, we need to be trained, it needs to be done from the ground up from the very first care giver who deals with an incoming patient who shows any symptoms of ebola, so thats that kind of widespread training still needs to be done. All right. Well, we are all thinking about those two nurses who have now been infected, and we appreciate your time today, mr. Rooney. Thank you. Thank you. So as we continue to track the Ebola Outbreak here in the u. S. , we are also getting some shocking reports out of liberia. An inventory from the countrys ministry of health and social welfare projecting theyre going to need at least 79,000 more body bags over the next six months. The report also showing a massive shortage of other key supplies, including those suits i was just showing you. The gloves, the face masks. The global community, including the u. S. , trying to help close that gap, but the u. N. Says it has managed to raise only half of the funds needed to fight the disease. As we just reported, the ebola crisis prompting president obama to make a last minute change in campaign plans today, cancelling two fundraising trips to stay at the white house for a cabinet level meeting to deal with the Ebola Outbreak. Time for some real talk now with brett baeir, host of special report. Some people might say that the time that the fundraising stopped and that the attention will be focused on ebola today. Yeah, gretchen. Its a bit of a rarity for this president. The last time we know he canceled something was september 2013, a fundraiser, dealing with the syria issue back then. He has had 60 political fundraisers or attended them just this year. 98 in his second term. You know, perhaps this is the moment in which this because of the Second Health worker and because she got on a flight that the president is taking the reigns and dealing with this in person with this cabinet. I find it interesting that Sylvia Burwell is going to be appears to be taking the upper hand over tom frieden of the cdc, or at least shes more involved. Is this part of the president in action today saying maybe that he also needs to step forward a little bit more in handling this crisis . Yeah. I think that theyre looking around the country at the level of concern, and its important, obviously, that we point out that this is still stemming from this one case, Thomas Duncan, as you pointed out, and the Health Workers dealing with that, but there is and its tough to get ebola and the transmission is not airborne arks coringed to the cdc. Its deaf infifly not. Its by blood and vomit and the woman who got on the flight was not bleeding, and she didnt vomit even though she may have had a low grade fever. They say she doesnt get to 100. 4, the thereby hold to become contagious. All of that aside, is still is something that the country is paying attention to, and all these calls from senator mccain and others that there needs to be an ebola tsar, well, thats what the hhs is for, and the hhs tapped, i think, to play a more prominent role. Yeah, except we actually dont have a Surgeon General right now. Not sure whether or not that would factor in, but its an interesting point to make. Also, the president , you know, maybe he is going to want to take back some of those things he said originally that it would not come to this country because here it is. I want to move on to another topic because brett has an important new special coming up in weekend on the economy and the crucial Midterm Elections focussing on ordinary americans, real people, who want someone to do something. Watch this. If somebody wants to build a coalpowered plant, they can. It will bankrupt them. He has no idea, no idea what he is going to do to this little part of the country. Whether he cares or not, i dont know. He has killed us. He has killed this part right here. Im telling you, its gone. Its gone. So are you talking to real americans, right, brett . Yeah. We went to kentucky, that particular person is a coal miner down in harlan county, kentucky, and thats been hollowed out. Thats one spot. The boom in louisiana is another spot. We spent months going around the country talking to folks. Even went out to california and San Francisco and the disparity in income out there. What often gets lost in all the talk about the polls and all the talk about the horse race are the people, and were going to give you some stories and show you some stories of real people dealing with their paychecks and it starts airing friday, 10 00 p. M. Eastern, and then you see the other times over the weekend. Its worth a look. All right. I lot of the aspect of the real people here on the real story. Brett, have a great show. Well be watching tonight as well. Thanks, gretchen. We are moments away from a White House Briefing just as president obama cancels the fundraising swing to prepare instead for an afternoon meeting with his Ebola Response team, so what will josh ernest say today . And the cdc trying to track down over 100 passengers now who shared that flight with the most recently diagnosed ebola patient. That may be easier said than done. Plus this. A flag carrying drone bringing one soccer match to a halt and sparking a massive brawl. What happened and how it all turn out . Right when we return. Down 358 points as we speak right now at 2 16 eastern time. Why . Well, the market has been unsettled for the last couple of days, but now could it be the fear of ebola and the basic general news coming out today that another person has it and was on an airplane . So investors selling often all kinds of concerns going on. Were going to continue to monitor this throughout the day. Now, back to the latest on the ebola crisis. Just hours ago the cdc revealing that the Second Health care worker to contract ebola inside the u. S. Flew on a commercial airline just 24 hours before she was xwaurn teened for the deadly disease. She flew back from cleveland to dallas on front ear flight 1143. We are now learning that she apparently also had a low grade fever before she got on board that flight as well. The 132 other passengers are being contacted by the cdc and will be interviewed. The plane itself stayed overnight in dallas and was routinely clean, says the airline, but heres the deal. The newest patient was among 48 Health Care Workers who were involved in treating Thomas Duncan, thats the ebola patient who died. Those workers were on a monitoring list, and the cdc says she never should have been on that plane in the first place. Listen to them. She should not have traveled on a commercial airline. The cdc guidance in this setting outlines the need for what is called controlled movement. That can include a charter plane. That can include a car, but it does not include public transport. That is all we know. We know that some passengers on board the frontier flight likely doaked other flights. It gives you an idea of how many possibilities there are for disease to spread. The newest patient, her neighbors all got reverse 911 calls. They have all been notified. Her apartment has been cleaned, and the common areas have also been cleaned. It apparently was extensively cleaned. The mayor of cleveland is now holding a news briefing. If he says anything about the plane or about a possible threat to its sit zendz, well let you know exactly what he says. All right, trace. No offense, but i dont know if you have been on a plane lately, even after they clean them, not so clean. All right, trace. Thanks so much. Time for any take now. So many questions about ebola, especially today after a second nurse has been diagnosed in dallas, and the nurse flew on the airplane the day before that. Is this a day more people become really concerned . Weve heard that the medical professionals who treated the first ebola patient in texas were told to selfmonitor themselves to see if they end up developing a fever, but what other protocols have they been told to uphold . Did they tell them it was okay for those folks to go on airplanes . Well, the cdc says today that nurse shouldnt have done that. Sounds like a day late and a dollar short. Did she know that . Even nbc news chief medical editor dr. Nancy snyderman, a doctor high pressures, violated her 21day mandatory quarantine leaving her home to go out for lunch even though she had been exposed to the cameraman with ebola currently being treated in nebraska. Didnt anyone hear the World Health Organizations scary numbers from yesterday . That we could see as many as 10,000 new cases of ebola a week in the next few months . To me the big question becomes how many of those might be right here at home . Coming up on the real story, a shocking new report reigniting an old debate over weapons of mass destruction in iraq. Where are troops injured by chemical weapons left behind by Saddam Hussein and told not to talk about their exposure . Well give you the latest details. And a drone shows up at a soccer match and big brawl breaks out as a result. How it all happened . Plus, mickey mouse moving one step closer to immortality as a tiny country puts everyones favorite cartoon rodent on its new coin. That brings us to our question of the day. Who would you like to see put on a coin and why . You can tweet me at Gretchen Carlson and use the hatch tag the real story, and well try to read your comments coming up at the end of the show.
