Systems or iconic targets. This comes some 39 hours after those two brothers are accused of doing the unthinkable in paris. Massacring 12 people including some of frances most beloved political cartoonists. Tonight we are getting a look inside the crime scene. We warn you this image is graphic. It shows bloodstained floors and papers strewn across the floor. This is the place where journalists stood up for free speech only to be assassinated for doing so. And as the hunt for their suspected killers continues tonight we are learning just how deep the alleged terror ties these two men actually go. We have team fox coverage tonight with our chief intelligence correspondent Catherine Herridge ed henry and mark thiessen. We begin tonight with Catherine Herridge reporting from washington. Catherine. Megyn, fox news confirming through government sources that both brothers had direct ties to al qaeda. And the 34yearold suspect went to an al qaeda Training Camp in yemen three years ago. Said kouachi worked on skills from small arms fire to commando style tactics apparently on display during wednesdays shooting. Tonight u. S. And french investigators are trying to work out whether said had direct contact with the al qaeda leadership in yemen and they directed the paris massacre. The republican chairman of the House Homeland Security committee who gets regular Intelligence Briefings told fox news the al qaeda affiliate in yemen known as aqap is the most capable of hitting u. S. And european targets. Aqap has been the real force within al qaeda. Its always been focused on external operations against the west and the United States. The most committed to doing this. Now, this would be one of the more real successes that they have had if it turns out to be true. An intelligence source also confirms to fox news that 23 minutes after the attack before anyone understood exactly what was going on two tweets were sent from an account that is linked to al qaeda in yemen. The tweets feature images of the shooting with photos of the al qaeda groups past leadership including americans Anwar Awalaki both killed in 2011 by cia drone strikes. The same photos come from the same propaganda magazine that called for the execution of Charlie Hebdos editor in march of 2013. A rare and candid warning from the head of britains Intelligence Service known as mi5 warning al qaeda and syria is fighting mass casualty attacks on the british transit systems and iconic landmarks like big ben. Parker did not link this new credible threat information to the massacre in paris, megyn. Catherine herridge, thank you. Youre welcome. We are also learning new details tonight about the suspects lives in france and what they did before they became apparently radicalized terrorists and carried this attack out. First to washington where president obama paid a visit to the French Embassy tonight. Chief White House Correspondent ed henry live tonight at the white house. Ed. Megyn bottom line is we saw a flurry of activity from the president last couple of hours to show hes on top of this threat amid republican charges that the American Homeland is not prepared for a parisstyle attack. First as you mentioned the president making an unscheduled stop at the French Embassy here in washington to sign a condolence book, show sol dare di with the victims and with the entire nation of france. He also convened perhaps more importantly a call with his top Security Officials tonight to get a handle on the latest threat matrix here at home. Hes also sending his attorney general eric holder to paris this weekend to meet with his european counterparts, get a handle on that threat. All of this after the president spent the day in phoenix and did not mention the paris terror attack. He was trying to stay on message about the economy, ahead of the state of the union, but joked about an astronaut going on a long mission. Listen to this. I know theres some folks in washington who wish i was going to be in space for a year, but [ laughter ] but im still around. Because i got some work to do. Now republican Lindsey Graham charges the president also has a lot of work to do here on the homeland. Graham charging that the president s policies such as releasing terrorists from guantanamo could potentially make this situation more dangerous. Ed, thank you. Ed just mentioned Lindsey Graham joined a growing number of republicans about raising questions about the president s policy on the growing war on terror here. We talked about the prison camp and president obamas approach to gathering intelligence. The president s policy is basically to kilter riss with drones. Im not necessarily opposed to that, but of course the most important thing you can do is capture a terrorist and interrogate them. President doesnt want us to do that either. Hes in the process of trying to close guantanamo which is the Perfect Place for Foreign Terrorists who are captured overseas. He wants to mainstream them frequently into a u. S. Article 3 court which means theyre going to get a lawyer and shut up. I mean, what you want the most from a foreign terrorist trying to kill us is what else do they know . Marc thiessen is a former chief speech writer to president george w. Bush fellow at the American Enterprise institute and fox news contributor. Marc, so more and more today we have heard the question raised about whether we are safe here or whether the measures that are supposed to protect us from Something Like this happening are slowly but surely being eroded by this administration. Your take on it. Not just eroded, eliminated. I mean, senator mcconnell is absolutely right. When you drone a terrorist, youve taken a terrorist off the street. But at the same time youve vaporized all the intelligence in his brain. We need that intelligence in order to keep the country safe. I mean think about the challenge that our Intelligence Community faces. Intelligence in the war on terror is like having 10,000piece puzzle put out on a table in front of you and youve got to put it together and connect the dots before an attack takes place. But youre not allowed to look at the picture on the cover of the box. Imagine how hard that is. How do you get the picture on the cover of the box . You get the terrorist who drew the picture you capture them and get them to tell you. Thats what we did with kalid shaikh, mohamed, he gave us something else. He gave us the picture on the box. Is the reason for that Political Correctness . We now look at what happened in france, also accused of being too politically correct when it comes to handling this problem. And we see these guys now who are still at large, that the younger suspect, the third of the three turned themselves into authorities last night. Friends are claiming he wasnt there, he didnt do it. But theyre still looking for the two main perpetrators here. They dont have them yet. But what we learned today is one of them traveled to yemen in 2011, made direct contact with al qaeda Training Camps. They both have long standing ties to al qaeda affiliates. They were both on the u. S. Nofly list. And yet one of them served time on the terrorist related charge only 12 months however. He was sentenced to 18 months, not years. Not even a Death Penalty in paris although now theyre talking about bringing it back, some of the conservatives are. But theyve been kicked out of the rallies. And the question is whether they are suffering from that same problem. Oh most definitely. But look at what you described. Youve described pieces of the puzzle, right . We have these pieces of the puzzle. We knew they were on the terrorist watch list. One we found out now went to yemen. How did we find out so quickly he went to yemen . We had that piece of the puzzle but we didnt connect it before the fact. The goal of intelligence in the war on terror is to connect the pieces of the puzzle, connect the dots before the attack takes place. Thats clearly what we werent able to do here. I mean why have the terrorists its now more than a dozen years since 9 11 and the terrorists have not attacked us. Why is that . Its because our Intelligence Community has been able to do a great job of connecting the dots before the fact. But the tools that they use are successfully being taken away from them. We dont interrogate terrorists anymore. Forget enhanced interrogation, we dont capture and interrogate terrorists period. I mean, the nsa with the snowden leaks, thats our other tool to find out what these people are doing, thats been decimated. Soin filtration basically all thats left. They dont have armies, navy and air forces that you can look at spy satellites. Youve got to get them to tell you what their plans are if you want to stop them. You cannot, because of Civil Liberties and because of, you know, right from wrong you cant just go spy on muslimamericans, right . You cannot do that. And yet certain programs that targeted highrisk groups within the Muslim Community have also been eliminated. And weve gone one step further, marc, today to where you cant even talk about radical islam without being deemed an islamophobe. Sure. The president doesnt even talk about the war on terror. If you talk to terrorists as a lot of these interrogators have gotten to know have, they tell you what provokes terrorist attacks is not the existence of guantanamo, its not the existence of cia interrogation. What inspires terrorist attacks is successful terrorist attacks. In the 1990s there was a series there was no guantanamo on 9 11. So it was a series of successful attacks. Now were seeing it happen again in syria in iraq and now in paris. And that means the danger is growing. Everyone needs to be aware of it. Marc, thank you. Thanks, megyn. We also have part two of our big exclusive with the new Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell in his first interview since becoming leader in the new congress beginning. Tonight, see what big things he hopes to do at the white house and what he expects next. Plus, we just mentioned how one of these two suspects is serving time for terror charges and had known ties to al qaeda. So why exactly was he free to run around paris apparently unmonitored . Plus, well speak to one of the bravest women you will ever meet. She is also on al qaedas death list alongside one of the editors who was brutally murdered yesterday. Ayaan hersi ali. I have hope. The reason why is i have hope. Im optimistic that we can stop them. That our ideas of life, they loved, we love life. That is a much stronger message than theirs. Nexium® 24hr. Teams and helicopters fanning out north of paris searching for any sign of these two brothers suspected of carrying out the devastating terror attack we saw yesterday in france. The editor of Charlie Hebdo who was brutally murdered yesterday had something in common with our next guest. Both were on al qaedas death list. In 2004 Ayaan Hirsi Ali created a film it would cost the films director his life. He was walking down a street in amsterdam when a muslim fanatic approached him, shot him multiple times, tried to decapitate him and then stuck a note to his chest with a knife. That note was a death sentence for Ayaan Hirsi Ali who remains under threat to this day. It does not stop her from speaking out. She is a political activist former member of dutch parliament, a fellow at Harvards Kennedy school, founder of the Aha Foundation and author of the book infidel. Just before we came to air i spoke with ayaan. Good to see you again tonight. Great to be here. And so this had to be a terrifying ordeal for you too personally yesterday when you heard this news, did the thought occur to you this could have been me . Yes it occurs to me every time i see or read about a terrorist incident that it could have been me. And it could have been you. It could have been all of us. Youve seen how at times theyre indiscriminate and how at times they have this planned. When we see this action and we see these dressed in black with the guns going in and just murdering everyone in front of them, we think this is lunacy. I dont understand it. Yeah. You actually do understand this ideology. I do understand it. They make it very clear what it is that motivates them. We know that this is an ideology, a political ideology tharks is embedded unfortunately in the religion of islam, a religion practiced by multitudes of people who are not violent themselves. We know this. What we fail to do over and over again is to make this connection. And we fight we are fighting with military means and counterterrorism means but were not fighting back with ideas. But how can we . A place like paris where the muslim communities are very segregated, they dont integrate into parisian life well talk about this later, what do you do . Force them who are communicating sharia law and the rules as they see it . What were seeing now is a vacuum, a vacuum of morality. If western society doesnt, again, im using the word infiltrate the values that have made the west so peaceful and prosperous through schools, through the media, through academia, through every possible peaceful channel of educating minds, what happens is you have a vacuum. And vacuums like this one are usually filled by evil terrorist ideologies. And what we are seeing is an islamist evil terrorist ideology. Isnt it true, ayaan that people are afraid to talk about radical islam . Theyre afraid because theyre afraid of offending the Muslim Community. You yourself when you make remarks about this you get condemned, you get shut down from speaking. Obviously youve made remarks about islam as a whole that are controversial. But as soon as you go there people believe you an islamophobe and they want to shut you up. Theres a combination of fear on one hand if journalists say ive been talking to journalists all day long. If we publish the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad, theyll come and firebomb us. If we do something, a violent act will follow. Theres that fear. But alongside that from the west i think, and especially on the liberal side is a deep seeded pity. People feeling sorry for the Muslim Community. And when the Muslim Community member leaders say we are offended, we feel so sorry for them, but we cant bring ourselves to offend them. But the way to get them out of that is to give them a form of tough love. And tough love is a love that is inclusive but that asks the right questions in the hope, and, you know challenges these values. Thats what we need to do now. How do we get there without condemning islam . The New York Times came out yesterday and said islam is not to blame. Howard dean came out and said these people who committed this crime are no more muslims than i am. And there seems to be a rush to very much say that the religion has nothing to do with this. Yeah. That argument of the New York Times and howard dean, with all respect, has not become redundant. Its no longer relevant in fact. There is a very strong link between what happened yesterday what happened in pakistan, what is happening today as we speak in yemen, in nigeria, in, you know iraq and syria all of that violence you can no longer divorce it from the religion islam or from the Prophet Muhammad or from the crime. Once we acknowledge that, then we can start to put together on the battlefield of ideas a way to defeat them. To you wish you hadnt made the movie . Absolutely not. Absolutely not. I feel the only way to really fight the only way we have a chance of fighting these barbarians is by talkin
