Manslaughter. His arrest not enough to quell the violence in the twin cities. Minnesotas governor said he will mobilize the full National Guard for the first time in the states history. They are getting what they want. They are getting on tv. They are seeing the images. They have the governor of minnesota standing up here, talking about how were moving things around. Theyre getting what they wish. Today they are going to have an overwhelming force of safety, security and peace. We are covering all the an angles of this story. Mark meredith is live at the white house. David spunt has the latest on the federal and local investigation intuse floyds investigations into floyds death. We begin with Steve Harrigan live in minneapolis. Reporter a huge demonstration getting underway today. You can see the crowds gathering. A lot of young people, some of them carrying signs, you might notice a lot of them carrying brooms and shovels. A lot of people have volunteered to go out and sweep up. Were in an area which has been hit hard by very different behavior overnight. The Shopping Mall behind me pretty much looted. People have been sweeping up debris all day. That Wells Fargo Bank burned out. The post office burned out as well. The governor has vowed that things are going to be different tonight. He said they will be out early and that there will be no violence on the streets tonight. Heres the governor. Mobileized at a level unseen in Minnesota History by wednesday morning. The forces on the ground last night were dwarfing anything weve seen from riots, from the hour mel strike, going back hormel strike, going back in Minnesota History. Reporter its a real question mark whats going to happen tonight. This is a peaceful, huge gathering right here now. The Public Safety commissioner was a lot less optimistic. He said the violence is not over. He said by giving up, by surrendering a Police Precinct that emboldened the vi rioters. He said police would be out earlier tonight. Tonight, theyll be out early and well see how that goes. Dana, back to you. No doubt well be in touch with you often on that. Steve harrigan, thank you. Meanwhile, attorney general william barr saying the federal investigation into the former Minneapolis Police officer is moving at exceptional speed, all this coming after minneapolis prosecutors charged him with third degree murder in George Floyds death. David spunt is outside the Justice Department. David. Reporter hi, dana. Earlier this afternoon the attorney general, bill barr, made a brief statement to the american people. He said listen, people can have a right to protest as long as its peaceful. He said the looting, the violence, he says that is completely unacceptable and there will be consequences. Listen. It is a fe federal crime to cross state lines or to use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting and we will enforce those laws. Reporter barr and his team at the department of justice are heading up a civil rights investigation to determine what civil rights may have been violated by Police OfficerDerek Chauvin in minneapolis. He was there for 19 years with the Minneapolis Police department. I want to show you video about 1,000 to 1,200 people from what we could tell passed pennsylvania avenue where the Justice Department is located heading towards the white house, a local group, there was another group last night. So far, this group seemed to be peaceful today. We also spotted attorney general bill barr leave the Justice Department a couple hours ago, head across the street where the fbi headquarters is. Both are working on this civil rights investigation. Dana. So thats the federal angle. What about the local investigation with the officer that is now charged . Reporter sure. Hes obviously behind bars. I mentioned he was 19 years in Law Enforcement. Derek chauvin, charged with manslaughter and third degree murder. Thats something that came four days after george floyd lost his life so publicly and so tragically. Now the big question which local officials are going to be investigating, what charges will the other officers face, many of them are basically just sitting on the sidelines watching this tragedy unfold. Thats what theyre going to be watching. All of it, dana, is under the department of justice umbrella. This right here, this building is home base for the investigation here in washington with civil rights and also in minnesota. Dana. David spunt, thank you. Meanwhile, President Trump is in florida and he just witnessed that spacex rocket launch into space. Before he left washington he weighed in on the protestser resulting in minnesota erupting in minnesota and elsewhere including at the white house yesterday which went on a brief lockdown. The secret service moved in. I want to thank the secret service. They were so professional last night. It was incredible. They were so professional. They were really great. Its a great state, minnesota. Theyve got to get tougher. Theyve got to get tougher. Theyve got to be strong. Honor the memory of george floyd. Honor his memory. Mark meredith is live at the white house for us with more. Mark. Reporter good afternoon, dana. President trump is due back at the white house a little bit later on this afternoon after as you mentioned the trip to florida for the spacex launch. Before he left washington, he addressed the crisis that were seeing in minnesota and in states all over the country. The president blamed the civil unrest on antifa. He also criticized local leaders including the governor of minnesota on the ground. Heres what he had to say earlier today. Theyve got to be tough. Theyve got to be smart. We have our military ready, willing and able if they ever want to call our military. We can have troops on the ground very quickly if they ever want our military. Reporter meantime, the president is also praising the United States secret service for their response to last nights demonstrations outside the white house. The secret service says six people were arrested after demonstrators knocked down barriers. Theyre accusing these demonstrators of throwing things like bricks, rocks and fireworks at their agents but they also want to be clear that neither the secret service or neither the first lady nor the president were hurt. We have been watching things on the ground outside of the white house all afternoon. When we came to work this morning we saw a noticeable increase in the amount of agents that are out there, the uniformed agents. We saw a group of protesters go by the white house, Lafayette Park remains shut down at this hour and those protester as they go by, they didnt come close to the white house but the secret service did have riot gear on. We could see additional demonstrations later on today. The president has been tweeting about this. This is what he had to say before he left the white house this morning. He said professionally managed socalled protesters at the white house had little to do with the memory of george floyd, they were there to cause trouble. The secret service handled them easily. Tonight is maga night at the white house. The president hel elaborated be he left washington. I heard maga wanted to be there, a lot of maga was going to be there. I have no idea if thats true or not. They love our country. Maga, its just an expression, but maga loves our country. Reporter its unclear how many people would show up for such an event tonight and whether or not any of the security situation that is still in place would change before that would happen. We expect the president due back at the white house around 8 00 this evening. Dana. Mark meredith, thank you. Across the country, protests over the death of george floyd are planned in at least 37 cities today. A live look Near Union Square in new york city where a crowd is marching peacefully. But some of these events have been far from peaceful. At least two people died in oakland, a Security Officer and driveby shooting and in detroit a 21yearold man shot by someone who approached a car he was sitting in. Businesses were damaged in those cities as well as places in atlanta, milwaukee, phoenix and dayton, ohio to name a few. Well have more on this later in the hour. The arrest of the former officer in the death of george floyd not stopping protests across the country. Next, why some are saying that the charges against the officer should be stronger as we get new reaction to the ongoing protests. Sweetheart, do my forearms look bigger . They look the same. Dana calls for justice and protests continue after the arrest of former Minneapolis Police officer, Derek Chauvin. Pros kai tores prosecutors charging him with third degree murder and manslaughter. My next guest feels the charges are not strong enough. Joining me right now is lawrence jones, whose comments have been so important over the last week. You join us on this saturday after that horrific display of the rioting, the looting, the uprising yesterday. Let me get your thoughts on where you think things are today. Do you think that tonight is also going to be another one of those very distressing ones like we saw last night . Yeah, dana. Thank you so much for your excellent reporting on this matter. Youve been really at the forefront of this. As you know, as weve been cohosting the five together this week, i told you that just by my experience of reporting on protests and being in the thick of baltimore, ferguson, that the bad actors were people that werent from the area. This wasnt something that i just made up, its just a matter of experience and being there on the ground. As you know, the mayor and the governor as the records are starting to come out, they told us that all the people that they arrested were people from outofstate. Thats whats going on right now. You have people that have their own agenda, that want that are an part of antifa, part of professional paid protesters. As i went from city to city, i would see some of the same faces. Their job is to agitate and stir up hatred. There are Peaceful Protesters on the ground. The governor needs to establish control. There has to be a clear separation between the people that are exercises constitutional protected protests and the anarchists. The people on the ground from the community, they dont want the businesses they go to on a daytoday basis to be on fire. Its the people that have no connection to the community that are seeking to set those places on fire. So what the governor needs to do this is a forced chance. This happened wednesday, thursday, friday. This is saturday night. It seems to be that there is no control. There is no coordination that has taken place. And thats problematic. Dana listen to what governor walz said today. Destruction of black businesses and black infrastructure, we have destroyed landmarks of the nations largest indigenous communities that ripped a hole in the soul of a people that have been oppressed from the minute we became a state. Dana lawrence, so i talked to a friend last night in brooklyn. She went out a little bit to see what was going on and she came back and she sent me a text and said these people are not from brooklyn. These are not people that are from our neighborhood or from the so how can we figure out where are they coming from, where are they getting their leadership, where is their source of funding. Because that also in addition to Law Enforcement, it seems like that also has to be addressed. Yeah, it does. I mean, you can go on social media and look at the chats and it will tell you where theyre organizing these protests or riots that theyre doing. Talk to the Community Leaders. Thats why relationships within the community are so crucial because if you really understand who the organizers in the communities are, they will tell you the people that are outsiders. Because they dont want their movement destroyed either. I mean, the main people that are here are legitimate protesters that feel like there is injustice and there is going on in this country and theyre speaking out against it and they dont want that message to be clouded by people that are an stay tores a agitators and looters and people with their own agendas. If we would build the relationships and talk with the Community Leaders i have a plethora of sources on the ground that are gibbing me intel giving me intel from city to city. They are real leaders in the community. They want to see change happen. They dont want to see the businesses they have helped build and coordinators with mayors and governors and the white house to get opportunity zones and finances to build the businesses, they dont want to see them burnt down. Its going to take basic Community Policing and relationships to get that done. That is the same relationship that is going to help build inroads in the community. Walking down the street with the community so you can figure out when there is crime in the community, as someone that has majored in criminal justice, has been an officer of the court, working in the juvenile department, that is consider it sal to get crime off the street as well. This is going to take time. This is going to take relationships. Its going to take hard work. Its going to be beneficial in the long run. Dana lawrence, were looking at video right now, you can see people gathering in minneapolis. Steve harrigan said thats were mainly as you were saying, these are people being really peaceful and trying to get their voices heard. In the last seconds that i have with you, if you had a chance to talk one on one with some of these folks, if they were listening to you, what would you want to tell them about how better to seek justice than the rioting tonight . I would tell them i understand their pain. I understand it. Im a young black male. Ive experienced some of the same encounters that theyve experienced. But i also know that it takes strategy to change the system. And, you know, well talk about this later in the show. I dont agree with the charges and all that but we have to honor the memory of mr. Floyd. And he would not want you guys out there burning down the city. He would want you peacefully protesting. He would want you getting involved, getting involved in local politics, learning who your da is, learning the Prosecutors Office so when corruption takes place you can vote those people out. Right now, the protesters, im sorry, the looters arent exercising that strategy. They have their own agenda. The Peaceful Protesters i support you, i stand with you, honor the memory. Dont destroy the memory of mr. Floyd. Dana lawrence jones, i cant wait for this social distancing to be over so i can give you a big hug. Thank you. Me too, dana. Dana take care. All right. State prosecutors are charging Derek Chauvin with third degree murder. What does that mean in minnesota and how does it apply in this case . A former federal prosecutor will join me to explain. Ive always been fascinated by whats next. And still going for my best, even though i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib not caused by a heart valve problem. So if theres a better treatment than warfarin. I want that too. Eliquis. Eliquis is proven to reduce stroke risk better than warfarin. Plus has significantly less major bleeding than warfarin. Eliquis is fdaapproved and has both. Whats next . Reeling in a nice one. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis, the number one cardiologistprescribed blood thinner. Ask your doctor if eliquis is whats next for you. Dana a minnesota prosecutor announcing charges against former officer Derek Chauvin in the death of george floyd. Watch. He has been charged with third degree murder. We are in the process of continuing to review the evidence. There may be subsequent charges later.
