creating impact beyond one statistical importance. morbid acts bring attention. suffering expands from the victims outward. the media enlarges the impact. we can help it. it's our job but it only makes it more likely to happen again. those new ripples persuade another person dying for infamy. why do celebrities unleash tantrums? perhaps they wish to create an impact beyond their minor importance too. the only solution: recognize what underlies the crime, a thirst for infamy. then deny it. citizens out there willing to risk their lives. preventing further bloodshed. the silver lining is that local heroes who risked it all to stop the horror. a good guy with a gun and a good guy with a truck, two thinks the media hates. despite being terrified and nearby stephen grabbed his gun and shot the suspect. it is still pretty awful but at least this pair made it slightly less so. those are pebbles that deserve the wider ripple. two pebbles with the impact of a million rocks. here is tape of jonny lang and dorff, the guy who chased down the suspect. >> i pulled up on the intersection and i saw the shooter coming from the cars. his vehicle was parked, door open, engine running. him in the neighbor across the street were coming out about the same time exchanging fire and as he came up, i never got a look at him. i never really saw him. i just saw the gun fire. the shooter got in his truck, the gentleman with the rifle came to my truck as the shooter took off and he briefed me quickly on what had happened and said we have to get him. that's what i did. >> greg: it's amazing, the good guy with the gun was terrified but he still did this. the deplorables. it's a fact, a gun attack, the outcome and the arrival of a second gun. >> dana: langendorf, basically because he was a trained, lawful gun owner who was able to act quickly, hopefully able to stop more carnage. we don't know exactly. if you look at johnny there, able to so calmly explained the situation and what they did. you do have to wonder, if you were in that situation, could you have been as brave? i think in these communities, they figure they have no choice. if they waited for the police officers, you are in a rural area, it could take another 45 minutes to an hour. >> greg: that's an important point. the fact that these folks have to have guns because this is a population, 400 or 800 people, i'm not sure. i don't know if they have their own police force. maybe they have one guy. i don't know. >> jesse: hollywood doesn't understand that because they've never been to that part of texas and i don't know the difference between a semi auto and automatic. enough of the lectures. there is such hypocrisy when it comes to mass shootings in terror attacks. look what happened in new york city, after that have been you had a muslim kill a bunch of innocent people, and the hollywood people said let's not attack islam. but then when some crazy guy shoots a bunch of christians in a church, the hollywood people attack christians for praying. they are so quick to politicize a mass shooting but all of a sudden there's a terror attack in this country and oh, we can't politicize it at all. chelsea handler. my goodness. she didn't say word on twitter when the new york city terror attack happened and now she is tweeting up a storm when this happens. you also have the fact that she says all republicans are to blame when there's a mass shooting. well, when a muslim kills a bunch of christians in this country, she doesn't say all muslims are to blame. holly -- hollywood makes so much money on glamorizing gun violen. you have radical ideologies and terrorist situations that unite these people. there's usually an immigration or foreign element involved as well. but when you have a mass shooter, there's almost never a foreign situation. it's always someone snapped like this. it's very easy, or easier to wage war against terrorism because there is trace evidence. there is a foreign situation. you know they want to kill all of us just because we are americans, but you can't fight a war against crazy. anyone can flip on a dime like that do unspeakable things to anybody at any time. i think regular americans understand the difference. hollywood doesn't. >> greg: i would say chelsea handler was drunk when she did those tweets but that's an insult to alcohol. i would never do that. kimberly, this is donald trump labeling the incident as a mental health problem. >> i think mental health is your problem here. based on preliminary reports, very deranged individual. a lot of problems over a long period time. we have a lot of mental health problems in our country, as do other countries. but this isn't a guns situation. we could go into it but it's a little bit too -- somebody else had a gun shooting in the opposite direction otherwise it would've been much worse. >> greg: focusing on not the tools but the intent. you have a person who is mentally ill with a gun and you have a person who is a good person with a gun. i'm not so sure though that once you label it a mental health problem, what do you do next. a lot of people miss -- half the shooters during obama's presidency had sought psychological help. nobody caught them before him. >> kimberly: that's what makes it extremely challenging. people struggle and they want to grasp at something. how to explain it and make sense of it. yes, you are -- blame the weapon or implementation of evil whether it's a vehicle, a gun. in this situation, the laws were followed. he wasn't allowed to carry. he was allowed to own weapons but not to carry on his person. he is violating the law there. clearly an individual who has a very disturbed past. assaultive conduct, domestic violence, you name it. a lot of anger directed at his former in-laws, at christians, at the situation, what happened with the military where he blamed his ex-wife. this is somebody who had made these kind of threats before. the exact type of individual that you don't want to be in possession of a weapon like this. never the less, it's a tragic situation. he was very angry about the church and christians and an atheist. there's a whole post of things here that came together in a perfect storm of violence and a horrific loss of life. >> greg: you have 330 million people. how do you handle, like, you don't know -- how can you predict something like that? there are a lot of people who don't like their in-laws. 99.9 oh% do not kill a church full of people because they don't like their in-laws. i want to ask you about why this debate never seems to go anywhere. immediately after, people impugn other people's motives. they say you are part of the nra coming of blood on your hands. there's never any factual backup to these smears. if we want to talk about something, rather than predictably choosing our side, wouldn't it be better instead of impugning our motives, talking about it, right? >> juan: of course. but the larger point is when you made at the top which is that nothing ever gets done. i think there's a reason nothing ever gets done if you look at the political structure. it is such that the nra puts a huge amount of money into candidates and they made it so that -- >> greg: you keep -- >> juan: for republicans, it's difficult as and going to challenge the nra. i'm going to take even moderate steps. hang on. it's fine, but i don't interrupt you. >> greg: these are questions. >> juan: fine. all of you have been talking about mental illness. okay, so if a republican was to say let's take some steps in terms of limiting access especially to assault weapons from people who have demonstrated mental health problems, guess what, the nra would go after it. they would say this person is not going to be elected. donald trump got a tremendous amount of money from the nra. what is he saying, maybe it's a mental illness. it's early to talk about it. with this point, it is so tired. >> greg: i don't know -- >> juan: people say it's about hollywood? hollywood? forget hollywood. this is about 26 people dead while they are in church. it's unbelievable. five weeks after some nutcase's firing at people at a concert. it goes on and on in america. they had a shooting in colorado. three people dead. we had another shooting yesterday even before this one. two people dead. it goes on. every day the carnage. you talk about chicago and yet why does nothing get done? in my opinion because of the power of the nra and the power of people who say you know what, i think this is now a cultural highly politicized issue. if you are a good conservative, you are all about gun rights at any cost, and that's terrifying. >> greg: you are impugning the fact -- okay an nra member doesn't want to get anything done. the overwhelming number of nara people are people who know how to use guns. they are law-abiding. >> juan: i didn't say nra members. nra members do want something. it is the nra. >> greg: the nra wants more mass killings? >> juan: know, for example, something like a bump stock. do you think anything got done? do you think republicans -- >> kimberly: i think they are working on it. yes, they are reviewing it. >> juan: i am saying the politicians. >> kimberly: i get it but i think it's an oversimplification to pigeonhole this. nra members are represented by the nra. they don't like this anymore than anyone else. they don't want you to take their guns so they can't be there to defend their family and their loved ones. thank god the law-abiding patriot came in and stepped up. >> juan: this is the argument. a good guy with a god will stop a bad guy with a gun. the good guys with the guns weren't there in time to stop 26 people from losing their lives. what i am saying is in the moment -- she was running away. at the moment, what we have is a situation where the nra reacts to people to people who are on their right who wont leave and less in terms of gun control. they are pushing and pushing and pushing. nothing in terms of -- >> jesse: i can't let you get away with this, juan. to say that the shooter was already running away when the heroic guy stepped in with a legally weapon. to denigrate his heroism. >> juan: what i am saying to you is he was leaving. >> jesse: he was already leaving. >> greg: this is where it ends up, no agreement. we learned more today about the loser who targeted the church. new details on the victims of the massacre, a live update from texas. that's next. liberty mutual stood with me when i was too busy with the kids to get a repair estimate. liberty did what? >> dana: i think that's why you see the frustration. the reaction is do something. there's a lot of people who could be for doing something if you could define what that something is. to show that there is actual evidence that it could improve. not too long ago, a woman -- she worked at the maritimes. she wrote a long piece. she was for gun control but everything she looked at when it came to evidence and data shows it actually doesn't work. i think there would be people willing to look at either changing laws or closing loopholes or whatever it might be. but the conversation never seems to get to that point. i'm not sure why it shuts down. it could be because of what we were talking about previously. there's other questions which is why wasn't he in jail? if this is the kind of violence he perpetrated on the child, then what happened there? obviously he did a lot of illegal things. could there have been anything done to prevent him from getting a weapon? i don't know. >> kimberly: felony conviction. >> dana: it sounds like the right thing to say at the time of the answers are a lot less satisfying. >> juan: what you just, strong, he attacked a child. it's not only that -- >> kimberly: the ex wife and child. >> juan: two marriages. the thing that caught my attention earlier was reading that his childhood friend said that between the sixth and ninth grade, his parents had him on extensive meds, psychological meds. this was someone who i've trouble and is known in this very small community, 400 people. imagine. 10% of the community and church yesterday morning. it comes back to what president trump said, it's if it's a mental health issue, maybe there is something we can do. >> jesse: i can agree on a few things. juan and i right now. if you are on antipsychotic medications. if you have been convicted of cracking and infants skull, beating your wife, having bad conduct discharge from the u.s. military serving 12 months in confinement. why is he legally allowed to purchase a firearm in texas or colorado? or anywhere? is it legal to purchase a firearm in this country with that kind of criminal history? >> kimberly: well, first of all, he lied. >> jesse: how did he get the weapon? >> kimberly: checked the box he indicating he didn't have disqualifying history. if you are convicted of anything like that, felony, salt. >> jesse: if you are a bad person, you're going to check a box alive. run this guy's background check through the national registry system. how did it not flag this guy's history? >> juan: we were just talking. kimberly was thinking did have a record but it was a misdemeanor. apparently that doesn't keep you from buying a gun in texas. >> kimberly: misdemeanor domestic violence, assault of conduct. we see these cases escalate. los angeles and san francisco. the deadliest calls for cops to go to in law enforcement are domestic violence situations. often times the weapon is turned on the police officer. >> greg: it's interesting. i have the facts here from john lott. 2010, 73,000 denials of gun purchases going through the check. only 13 convictions from that because there were so many false positives. i have three solutions that i hammer. one of them is when you do research on media reports of high status suicides, they are correlated to an increase in suicides, copycats especially among young teens. we talked about the tv show on netflix the kids watched. we know mass shooters are often enamored by the press clippings of previous and they want to beat the score. that's a fact. number two, solutions. identify soft targets and harden them. hire somebody. we used to do earthquake training. you could do something in a couple weeks, teach people how to react, have an escape route, those kinds of things. this is the last one, have a good guy with a gun. mr. williford was a former nra instructor. they are probably all over the community. you pay five bucks an hour, they would probably do it for free. somebody was there too hard and soft targets. there are a lot of retired people, retired police officers, retired instructors, retired hunters who know how to handle a gun because they have been trained. >> dana: there was a guy at the 2:00 show. he has a business training volunteers. now it's an organization. specifically for houses of worship so you could have somebody there to protect other others. >> kimberly: if he had been dishonorably discharged, he would've been prohibited from getting it. coming up, the g.o.p. is working hard on tax reform. can their bills survive following severe opposition from both sides? >> greg: i don't want to agree with nancy pelosi. look, here's my feeling. we are told it's simply fighting transparent but it's not for the individual at all. they are hiding behind the illusion of reducing the number of tax brackets, but that's an illusion. like somebody trying to sell you on recording for a car. you are not lowering taxes. we didn't broaden -- maybe i'm wrong. i don't sense we broadened the tax base. instead we have piled more taxes on those who pay taxes already. this is what drives me crazy. the assumption is that if you are in a high tax bracket and you make a lot of money, you were there all your life. sorry, it took me 30 years to get where i am. i've never been in the same income bracket or tax bracket for more than a few years. true, i was fired many times. people assume if you are in a high earning bracket and you pay all these taxes that you are just rich. that's b.s. you are not. it took a long time to get there in the government didn't care about you. they didn't care about you when you were toddling along making nothing and i finally get to the point and they go "take off your clothes. we are taking everything." >> kimberly: and then you die. and then they take the rest of it. >> dana: "wall street journal" editorial board has been pretty unhappy. they like the corporate side, cutting the taxes. they do not like what's done on individual rates. at "the weekly standard," a great writer, a piece today called "kill the bill." he's not happy. >> jesse: congressman watters would not vote for this bill. family of four, household income $60,000. you get a $1200 tax cut. that's $25 extra in your paycheck a week. just 25. if you are an individual, $75,000 a year. you save about $2,000. an extra $40 a week. not a lot of money. they treat successful people like obama would have treated them. if you are making between $450,000 and about a million, your taxes aren't getting cut at all unless you own a business. a lot of people don't own businesses. it has a stimulative effect on the rest of the economy, consumer spending drives growth. i'm hearing rumors that people making between $1,000,000.2 million are getting a tax increase. there's a secret tax bracket and if you add the obamacare tax on top and they don't let you write off your state and local taxes in new york or california or your mortgage interest, you could be paying, if you added up, 60% of your income if you live in new york or california. that's insane. i like the corporate stuff. they're not touching capital gains. there are so many problems with this. the argument that drives me crazy is that the tax cuts need to be paid for. it's not the government's money. how about cut spending instead?
