Going to be in your town tomorrow. Dana this comes after last night, President Trump and the Coronavirus Task force released a grim new projection saying that virus could kill as many as 240,000 americans. And that is if people follow social restrictions. The president warning the next two weeks will be brutal. We begin with dr. Tom friedman, former director of the center of Disease Control and prevention and president of resolve to save lives. Maybe give us a taste of what its like, if you put yourself in the shoes of dr. Fauci and dr. Burks, to deliver that message to the president and know that then the president is going to have to be the one responsible to deliver the message then to the american people, that we got a long way to go. We need to act with tremendous urgency, we are all in this together and its crucially important that we use this time, this precious time that we have to get ready because that number is not destiny, that number is a warning. What we have to do is everything in our power to prevent as many deaths as possible and that means not only that Everyone Needs to stay home but it also means that we need to urgently ramp up our Health Care System, our tracking of the virus, our Public Health system. Thats what other countries have done to get this under control and we can do it but we have to Work Together with an enormous sense of the word, urgency and well coordinated. Dana just to go back to Governor Cuomo for a moment, he talked about this problem being one of trying to protect our Health Care System. With all the news and people sing with the nurses and doctors and emts are going through, its sinking in. Take a listen to what Governor Cuomo said on that earlier. We have been behind from day one. This virus has been ahead of us from day one. You dont win a war that way. The next battle is on the apex. The next battle is on the top of the mountain that is where the enemy either overwhelms our Health Care System or we are able to handle the onslaught of the enemy. Dana dr. Frieden, just take a look at this chart here, the states that have a thousand or more cases. To the Governors Point this is not just a new york problem although it is a very severe problem in new york right now but across the board you see states, indiana even with 2100 cases and even alabama now. These are states with at least a thousand cases. What should states be preparing for right now . Can you hear me . Dr. Frieden . He cannot hear me, so unfortunately i will answer my own question. That was this, the governor of new york was telling states, you have to understand, this is coming her way. So you may not have a lot of problems, you may not even have a lockdown order. Dr. Frieden, were you able to fix the connection . Okay. All right. We probably will have to move on from that. Let me give you a couple other pieces of information here. You did have the Surgeon General jerome adams saying on the today show that he is begging people to stay at home because to get to go back to this issue of the state. When its like a tsunami, the big wave comes and it takes a little while to get there and thats why you have some time to get out of the way. I think thats what the officials are trying to say today. There are 190,000 cases in the United States. Dr. Frieden, they are telling me you are available now . Yes. Dana okay, great. Im obviously not the expert and you are. Maybe talk a little bit about what these hospitals and other states should be preparing for now and why its important that even if you dont have a lot of cases in your state right now, to respect the social distancing so that you can protect your health care. Because if we lose the Health Care Systems capability to take care of us, we will all be in a lot of trouble. There is no city anywhere in the country or anywhere in the world that can withstand the number of cases of covid19 that will occur if we do not physically distanced urgently. And that there is a delay. If you turn off the top of the spread of infections today it will be a week or two before people get sick because they were exposed, it takes five or six days on average, up to two weeks to get sick. Then another week before they are hospitalized or severely ill. Thats why we know we will continue to see a large number of cases even after the physical distancing starts. What we do know is it will get better but we have to use this precious time, every single second that we have two work to prepare. That means increase safety in our Health Care Systems. So if you are Health Care Workers get infected. That means that people with mild illness need a way to be cared for quickly without infecting others. Let me in scaling up not just a number of ventilators but who will operate them. Whats equipment for them, how can we save peoples lives and how do we get our Public Health departments ready to do the kind of testing, contact creating, isolation and quarantine thats crucial. Other countries have gotten this right and theres no reason that we cant, also. What it means is every, using every second, its not a time to wait, its a time to work. Dana let me ask you about the idea of the ventilators and people needing to use them. Are there those in health care that could learn this pretty quickly and how could we get that done . Nurses, emergency medical technicians, doctors and others can be trained. A lot of the ventilators are complex to use but its a system. Its about the equipment, the section and the tubing and the people to operate it and it do that safely so we dont lose more Health Care Workers. Health care workers are a most Precious Resource and they are the front line in this war. This world war against coronavirus. We have to make sure they have the protection they need to come not just protective equipment but also the systems so that patients with illness are not exposing them. Theres a way to structure our care that reduce the risk of patients in every Health Care Facility in every nursing home and every longterm care Facility Needs to make that happen. This is coming and its coming to your community. Its time to do what you can now. Just think about this, one thought. If new york city had locked down two days later, that would have doubled the number of cases. This comes, as the governor said, like a bullet train, not a freight train. That means we need to work so quickly and learn from other countries, singapore, china and hong kong. Dana can i ask you about, i mean, learning from china, what could we learn . We cant even trust the information that they have and dr. Burks said that last night, that a lot of the models they were working with say it might be more mild of a problem then it has turned out to be because china didnt give us the right information. What did you see there that they did well that we should replicate . We are learning more about this virus all the time and is one expert said we need to be humble about it because we are learning more all the time. Let me give you one number. 700,000. Thats the number of contacts that china has created and i do believe that number. Thats a management number they use. They did that by having in one city, the city of wuhan where this started, they had 1800 teams of five people tracing contacts. 700 people tracked for 14 days each and when they got sick immediately isolated. Thats how theyve been able to tempt us down. They are now testing massively and have identified 100 or 200 cases per day of people coming into china from other places and thats the best of what the future can look like for us. Where we are aggressively testing and isolating a Contact Tracing so we can get back to a new normal, we have to so be careful but we dont have explosive spread. It is possible to do that and thats what singapore, china, taiwan and south korea have shown us. We have to work much faster and much more coordinated. Dana dr. Tom frieden, we appreciate your time, thank you. Meanwhile, the u. S. Military dealing with the coronavirus far from the american mainland. The captain of the Aircraft CarrierTheodore Roosevelt is docked in guam and hes now sounding the alarm after hundreds of sailors on board tested positive. National security correspondent Jennifer Griffin is at the pentagon with more. Jennifer, is there an update on the call from the captain there to be rescued . Dana, we just came out of a briefing with the chief of Naval Operations and active secretary, thomas mobley. We were given an update, the original letter from the captain, the plea for help to get those 5,000 sailors off of the ship after their number of covid19 cases had spiked. It seems that call came on sunday and that the navy had been working very quickly to move some of those sailors off the ship. We are told that 1,000 are off the ship and another 1200 should be off the ship in short order there. Looking for hotels in guam in order to play some of those sailors. Theyve increased the testing aboard the ship but this was a highly unusual plea for help from the captain of the uss Teddy Roosevelt after nearly 100 sailors on board had tested positive for or were suspected of having covid19. That number had been doubling every few days. He has 5,000 sailors on board and they had been forced into the port in guam a few days early. The letter to top navy brass was leaked to the San Francisco chronicle but the Navy Officials we just heard from said there may have been a lag between that leak and when they were starting to address the captains concerns. The captain wants to offload the majority of the crew immediately to disinfect the ship, adding the spread of the disease is ongoing and accelerating. We are not at war, sailors do not need to die. If we dont act now we are failing to take care of our most trusted asset, the sailors. Some are needed to watch over the ships two reactors and dozens of fighter ships. Obviously we have huge implications for the navy. That is not it has a lot of fuel on board, and we cant just take everybody off. In in some ways it is like a cruise ship in terms of how fast spreading on board and how difficult it is to socially isolated. The navy is scrabbling to find hotel rooms in guam and they need the equivalent of five large new york hotels to house everyone on board. A number of positive covid19 cases came on board with carrying out exercises just ten days ago and that number is rising and doubling every few days as we mentioned. On march 5th, the carrier stopped in guam for a five day port call. They cant say for certain whether patient zero was in vietnam and was part of that port visit. At the time w. H. O. Said vietnam was a low risk. The carrier can only text, contest 200 People Per Day meaning it would take 25 days for all the sailors to be tested but the Navy Officials that we just spoke to here at the pentagon said they are increasing the testing to 500 tests per day and again they are looking for more housing to try to relieve some of the pressure on board the roosevelt. Dana i thank you will. Doctors, nurses and hospital staff are risking their lives to try to save others. Up next we will speak to a one who knows all too well what it takes on the front line of this fight. President trump i watch the doctors and the nurses walking into that hospital this morning. No one has been turned away, no one who hasnt needed ventilation has not received ventilation but you can see how stressful it is for each of th them. Dana dr. Deborah birx praising medical workers were doing their jobs heroically despite the danger. Joining us now is benny cortez, its good to have you here with us. I wanted to read to you from a nurse that is describing scary conditions, this is marion county, afraid to give her name for understandable reasons says that if expectations continue to increase as far as patient demand and corners continue to be cut, i do not know if i can continue to risk my health and those of my family for a company who thinks this is okay. The staff have no been informed about the ppe numbers are that we only get one mask per day. Ms. Cortez, what do you think is the biggest problem for nurses right now . Is that this concern about not having enough protective gear . Yeah. First of all thank you for having me. The main problem is lack of personal protective equipment. I understand where my colleague, the nurse who you were mentioning, i understand where shes coming from. Its because the hospital industry and our management people continue to ration masks, and gowns, and now they are saying we need to conserve on glove. Gloves. We are nurses, we are the frontline workers. Its easy for them to bark out the orders when they are in their offices or in their homes. You know, giving the orders. But we are there to take care of patients. We need to have all the proper gear in order for us to safely take care of our patients and also to take care of ourselves because we still go home to our families and we intermingle with the community and that is what is causing a lot of anxiety amongst the nurses. We are not afraid to take care of the patients who have covid19 but we need to have the proper gear in order to do our job safely. Dana so who would best be able to help you to get that, how could wes help solve that problem for nurses across the country, not just nurses but everybody. Is there a bottleneck that you know of that could be broken . First of all it needs to start locally. Like hospitals or Health Care Institutions we work. They need to stop hoarding the proper protective equipment and the mask in the gloves. Then, they need to start searching where they could get more of the safety gear. The president had said there are stockpiles, lots of the stockpile but where are they . He needs to release it. He had put some state and federal agencies to take care of it like fema and whatever other agency had mentioned. And other agencies and other Health Care Institutions because in order for us to continue taking care of patients we need to have the proper gear. We hear you. We want the nurses to be taken care of and i think they are trying their best. Hopefully it will get better soon because we know than nurses are concerned and we need you to be well in order to take care of all of us. Thanks for your time today.
