Transcripts For FOXNEWSW The Daily Briefing With Dana Perino 20191114 19:00:00

Residents of the suspected shooter so a lot of pieces coming into focus. Ted williams, former d. C. Homicide detective, thank you very much. We on fox news will continue to follow the stories live along with those News Conferences coming up. Dana hi, i am dana perino. This is the daily briefing. We are expecting many updates on the shooting in california, police said to give update any morning moment now. My colleagues have done incredible reporting so far, especially Harris Faulkner in the hour before with this Breaking News and now we have Christina Coleman live on the scene in Santa Clarita, california. Whats the latest now . The streets here still blocked off, as you can see we cant go any farther just outside where you can say this very heavy Law Enforcement presence. Sheriffs deputies out here im a police, members of the s. W. A. T. Teams surrounding this school even though we are told the suspect is in custody now and is being treated for injuries and is in the hospital. So is one of at least six people that were injured during the shooting. We do not know exactly the extent of these injuries and how each person was hurt, but we do know that at least six people were transported to hospitals. Its a very heartbreaking situation. I just spoke with a father, a number of parents waiting out here to speak with their children. This gentleman told me his daughter is actually with Law Enforcement and that they have been questioning her. So he believes she mightve witnessed something. There is a lot to piece together here. This shooting happening about 7 30 in the morning, when lots of parents were in this area, dropping their kids off at school, a number of students who just came here on their own and shortly after, hearing those gunshots. And there school is on lockdown. All of the schools in this School District are on lockdown as police tried to figure out where the suspect went i now again, we are knowing that he is in custody. The School District putting out a statement. The superintendent saying just about 20 minutes ago first and foremost, our hearts go out to the families affected by this terrible incident. Words are insufficient in times such as these. There were a lot of questions about where parents could go to pick up their kids, the reunification site just down the street at central park and transportation being arranged for them at this point. A very fluid situation here with police trying to figure out exactly what happened, and doing this investigative work and we are waiting on those two Press Conferences, one by Law Enforcement and another at the hospital. Couldnt get any more details on this tragedy that happened here this morning. Dana Christina Coleman, thank you. Lets go to Trace Gallagher now. What more do you know that you can add to this before we hear from the police and from the hospital . Just a little bit of context on both those friends talking about the hospital which is a Trauma Center where they bring the most seriously wounded students, that is where the female, the 15yearold passed away at the hospital. We know that two male students are there in Critical Condition. As you look at the podium and the bottom of the screen, we are still waiting. We anticipate that Los Angeles County sheriff Alex Villanueva will come out and issue the briefing. He will have some detectives, some First Responders as well. One of the key questions is the process, and when did they realize that the person, one of the people who was injured was the actual shooter . We know the shooter has been described as a 15yearold. We also know nationality and dress but we are going to hold that into the sheriff actually comes out and confirms that information. The process we have seen if you were to replay this video is kind of what we had seen over and over again, which is now across the country become Standard Operating Procedure. You have the Students Walk out, their backpacks are thrown away, their hands are up and everybody is considered a suspect until the school is clear. We go back to the parkland shooting back at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in florida and you remember that big controversy over whether the deputies went in or not. Now, the standard procedure is you go in. When these deputies responded, when the Police Officers responded, the first thing they do is go in and try to confront the shooter if they can locate the shooter. When this happened, it was at 7 30 in the morning local time. Classes start at 7 50, so the school was just being filled with students and for a little more context, saugus has 2300 students. Is fenced all the way along the perimeter. There is a School Resource officer on campus, it is unclear if he or she was on campus at the time, but they have monitors are people who watch the students come in the several gates that you can access the campus from. There are no Metal Detectors. One of the other Big Questions of course to the sheriff or to the detectives will be how in the world did the student actually get this gone on campus, and secondly, where did he get the gun . The other thing we are going to focus on is the students house because there was a huge contingent of Police Officers and detectives that had actually surrounded the students house. Was about a mile, a mile and a half away from campus. He lived in a neighborhood with other students. There was a student on local television saying he lived about five houses down for me. She wouldnt give his name, wouldnt give information about him until things were confirmed but clearly, she was shocked that somebody in her neighborhood would allegedly do this. So Big Questions about whats the social media footprint here, what was this kid planning, who did he talk to you, who was he texting, did he act alone, where did he get the gun, whose gun was at, and was there anybody in the house when people went in there, when the Police Officers and investigators when in the alleged shooters house, was there anything in there . The early reporting is there were reports there was somebody inside the house and then they backed off of that. There wasnt somebody in the house, where are the parents and what did the parents know . Its kind of something we have seen a great deal of in several years, so this becomes a Standard Operating Procedure and when the News Conference starts, both the hospital and its high school are going to get a wealth of information about exactly what transpired at 7 30 a. M. Local time here in southern california. Dana Trace Gallagher, thank you for that update. Going to be joined now by phone, michael romero, a sophomore at Saugus High School. Are you there . Yeah. Dana tell me, what did you see in here this morning . This morning, when i got to school, i went to go refill my water bottle, and right when we got there, the first 5 minutes i was at school. I heard a loud gunshot, but nobody really knew what it was. And then after that, there were four more and we just looked and we saw everybody running for the gate. Everyone was running. Dana can i ask you, if you at the school had been trained or gone through any drills in case Something Like this had happened at your school . Yeah, we have had a Lockdown Drill earlier in the year. We go through it as if someone were going to do it, and rico in the classroom and lock the doors and turn off the lights and if you can get off it campus, what actually happened, totally forgot all of that and just ran dana we are glad that you are safe and we are sorry for what youve been through this morning, we appreciate you joining us, michael romero, thank you. Lets bring in former new york Antiterrorism Task force and School Security advisor. While we wait for the Press Conference, the police are gathering their facts on their information. You advised school is on school safety, and you just heard from one of the students they are that they had gone through a Lockdown Drill, sounds like the school did what they could in order to prepare their students but as they said in the moment, you forget what youre supposed to do. Thats why its so important to continually do these drills so that the kids automatically know what to do. In our business, we do this for office buildings, arenas, churches, very similar type of situation where you have to know exactly what to do and when to do it. First of all, if you can run and get away from a situation like this, you run. Thats what michael was talking about. The other thing is if you need to, you have to hide. You can get into a closet or hide in a particular area, you do that. You get away from the shooter. You cant run and you cant hide, you have to fight. Doesnt matter what you use, a fire extinguisher, a desk, a bookbag, a backpack, a book, conspire with other students to attack the person, but its about taking charge of a bad situation. Thats really what people are trying to do in any of these bad cases. Dana might be some questioning about whether the school has Metal Detectors. Would you recommend Metal Detectors for schools . It depends on the location and it depends on the school. There were small towns across the country at the Metal Detectors are not necessary. Should we have a Security Officer from the local Police Department . We always recommend even if the small town has ten Police Officers, someone should be assigned to the school, communication with the other police, headquarters and be able to have the weapon and take action right away. Dana im going to ask you to pause for a moment. We have new information, lets go back to Trace Gallagher for that. I want to bring some new information from the undersheriff. What they are saying is because a lot of parents are on Scene Waiting to reunite with their kids and the kids are being held because they are being interviewed and the undersheriff is saying we are interviewing all these kids before they can be released to their parents. We are going to be conducting this thorough investigation. He goes on to say why every student and because the witnesses could provide Important Information even if they dont realize what theyre saying is important. This is key and i think bob strang can speak to this. These rumors that we have heard havent reported them because we are waiting for some official to confirm this. As we know in the early goings of these shootings, a lot of the information is wrong. Now the undersheriff tim murakami is saying there has been rumors, he has acknowledged that there were rumors that posted threats were made about an attack on Saugus High School. That brings us to an entirely different level. Where were these threats made . Who made the threats . Where they targeted at some specific group of kids . It is interesting information and we are going to get a lot more about once the News Conference starts up, but these are tidbits as the Investigation Rolls on that somebody like bob strang can really address the detail about what this means big picture wise. Dana thank you for that breaking detail. Bob, what about that in terms of what the police might be doing right now as we wait for them to start this Press Conference, they have to make sure that they can provide as much information as possible, has to be accurate. How important is it to look at social media today . It is imperative and thats part of the intelligence. You want to stay one step ahead of what is happening. Social media is a big part of that. Interviewing all the students is a big part of that. There was something going on in the school, something that was relevant to building up to this case. Was there anyone else involved . Who are his friends . What did they see . What did they hear . In a perfect scenario, you want to be able to have the principle of the school, the Schools Health professional, and someone who was responsible for the police work and the intelligence, and the three of them Work Together and are able to share information and are able to prevent these types of situations from occurring. Dana earlier today, you pointed out to us that there was an article in the Wall Street Journal ran today before the shooting but the headline is Mass Shootings raise questions about security and training. Perpetrators at schools and workplaces are typically insiders who know safety procedures is what a new study finds. This struck you as being quite accurate. Look at Domestic Violence cases, look at the Workplace Violence cases, look at the School Shootings. Of course, it is usually associated in some way with that particular school, with that home, or with that building or that employee. What you want to be able to do is exactly what we talked about, try to prevent those things from occurring. But it still means you need to have good security. You need to have vendors checked before they are allowed to come into the school, need to have perimeters built around the school, need to have good communications, good drills, procedures in place. The article kind of said security in and of itself is not the answer. But i can just tell you the more security that you have, the more cctv cameras, the more perimeters you have to be able to get into the school, you can slowly shoot her down. You can save a life. You can prevent a potential situation today. Thats the idea. Is it the cure . Know. But is it going to help . Absolutely. Dana because we have had so many of these happen, is that the lesson that you have learned that you take away from this, that the layers of security are the things, you have to invest in it. Right. Even though it may not stop the situation like this, there may have been lives that were saved because it did slow the person down, it did keep them from getting in quickly, there was a procedure in place, they saw the cctv cameras. Was more difficult than just walking in the front door. Dana while we wait for this Press Conference to get going, what would you learn from the police, what would be one of your first questions . Right now, you can imagine, its typical not just in this case but in any situation like this, youre going to go through his cell phone, all his electronic devices, look at everything thats happening very quickly. Who hes been in touch with, has anyone else been involved, so thats what the Search Warrant is doing right now. They are taking his computers, his laptop, his phone, and combing it for everything. At the same time, they want to know where the gun came from, are there other guns in the house . That is a key issue here. So they are going to be looking at his financial transactions, where hes been the last few days, who he has met with, who he has communicated with. So there is a full court press right now to learn every detail about this young man. Dana we do have one young woman who has passed away, two other in Critical Condition that we know of. As we wait for this Press Conference, we really appreciate you being here. You could stick around for us, we would really appreciate it. We are continuing to monitor all of these developments as we wait for the News Conference but meanwhile, there was another big story we are following today. Is the fallout from the first day of the public impeachment hearing and republican congressman will hurd is getting credit for asking tough questions. He joins us now. Thank you for being here with us. Just going to take a break from this coverage of the Breaking News out of california to talk to you about impeachment. I wonder what the feeling was the day after the dust has settled, do you think the democrats feel like they fell short yesterday of making a case that the president should be impeached and removed . I dont think anybodys mines were changed from yesterday. You can tell we have two senior state Department Officials that made it very clear they hadnt heard from ukrainian officials about concerns of aid not being provided to ukraine until well after the phone call between the president. They made it clear that under this administration, s
