Of hearings on the Mueller Report. They say dean could give insight on possible obstruction and how the president responded to millers investigation we will begin a series of hearings today that will begin to tell the American People about the contents of the Mueller Report. We got this announcement on the last hour and we are still working on reporting through the different elements to kind of decode it, if you will. Based on what weve heard from the democratic chairman jerry nadler he does expect to get a handful of documents from the Justice Department as early as this afternoon. We dont know based on the statement with those documents will include, but if you can just bear with me here, he is talking specifically about obstruction. That was the volume that had the least read actions. It sounds like the underlying records but not grand jury material. Meanwhile, the ranking republican on the committee, doug collins, has also put out a statement saying that this is more evidence of the attorney general, in his view, has gone above and beyond what was in the special counsel regulations. Just an hour from now, in the room behind me, we will have the former white House Counsel john dean. He said earlier today he is going to draw comparisons between his time in the Nixon White House and the trump administration. As a committee, im clearly not a fact with this, but i hope i can give them some context. And show them how strikingly like watergate what we are seeing now and as reported in the Mueller Report is. What critics say, specifically republicans, is that john dean is now what we call a fact witness. In other words, he has no direct insight. He was not a principal player in the special counsel robert Mueller Report. Republicans say this is like impeachment, or a mock impeachment, because the democrats have not secured the testimony of former white House Counsel don mcgahn who, of course, is a fact witness and a principal in the special Counsel Robert Mueller investigation. Also, they pointed to the fact that they believe john dean has some significant credibility issues. Here he is, he spent 45 years trying to make money off of rehabilitating himself. This cant be serious. Im a little bit astonished they will bring this guy in. We also heard from the white house this morning, and they are making a notsosubtle play for the rules here on capitol hill, any testimony has some kind of legislative action. Bringing someone like john dean doesnt feel that requirement. And they are urging lawmakers to get back to things like the budget and standard legislative affairs. The president is absolutely right. The donothing Congress Wants a do over on the Mueller Report. They should have been voting on the usmca, fixing, and they should not be asking the president to spend 2 trillion more on wasteful spending. This is the situation, harris, where you want to pay special attention to the language that is being used. Chairman nadler talks about putting criminal contempt on pause. Criminal contempt would allow democrats to go to the federal court and sue for compliance on the subpoenas. Based on a reporting far, it looks like the rules committee will hear this resolution, and if it passes through, there could still be action on the house floor tomorrow, harris. Harris Catherine Herridge, thank you very much. I want to bring in my first guest. She was at todays hearing. Republican congresswoman debbie lesko of arizona sits on the house Judiciary Committee. So good to have you on the program. I just want to start out with this witness, this john dean. We know his place in history and that he was found guilty of obstruction. So they brought him in. As that for or, pleaded guilty. Was that for effect, or is this risky in terms of democrats and what they are seeking . This is nothing but political theater and its been a series of that and the Judiciary Committee, and in all the committees in the house. Like you said, the American People want to get things done and work together. Including the border crisis. On both the Judiciary Committee and the rules committee, i have served. So i will actually be managing this bill on the floor tomorrow. This Judiciary Committee, its going to be a political circus. All it is is using taxpayer dollars in the influence of House Committees. Thats all this is, and its ridiculous. Harris even if it were not that, the criticism has been thats what it can look like. The reason i started with that question is because john dean said, im not a fact witness. He said more. Lets watch. The fact that nixon was hands handson, or it will become his liquor trump was handson, very early. The firing of comey was not a similar to some of the actions nixon took. Nixon waited and tried to influence the fbi investigation. As did trump. There are lots of comparisons. Harris from a man who admits hes not a fact witness. I want to talk about the news today is jerry nadler. Are you surprised there is some negotiating going on in terms of getting documents from the doj . Jerry nadler, chairman nadler, went ahead at lightning speed to do contempt of congress in judiciary even while the department of justice was trying to negotiate with them. And then we found out that after they pushed through this contempt of congress charge at the judiciary, thats one term and that they reached out to the department of justice and said, oh, can we negotiate . Thats not how things should be done. Again, another proof that this is nothing but political theater, another attempt to undermine the president of the United States, and another way to influence the 2020 president ial election using taxpayer money. This is outrageous and uncalled for. In fact, this vote they are having today in the rules committee, on the House Resolution to give authority to not only the Judiciary Committee but also all committees, to go forward with lawsuits, is unprecedented. Never before has it happened in the u. S. House of representatives without a formal full house vote of contempt of congress. It has never happened before. Just more proof that the democrats are going over and beyond to undermine the president. Harris congressman lesko, whats at stake with this what today . You said its unprecedented, but break it down. I really think this hurts the reputation of the United States house of representatives. When we are going at lightning speed, never before done in history, on subpoenas, contempt of congress, before we try to even negotiate with the department of justice, when it is clear to me they have gone beyond and above to try and accommodate chairman nadler. From what im told, he has never even looked at the unredacted or the littleredacted report yet. He refused to do it. This is just ridiculous. Again, its very clear this is nothing but trying to influence the 2020 president ial election and to do it using taxpayer money instead of the normal process where you have to pay for tv commercials and that type of thing. Well, they are trying to do it using taxpayer money, using the House Committees to go after a president. Harris interesting. We are hearing also today from congressman doug collins who had a reaction right after this news broke. He says the just privatizing it again and offered accommodations to House Democrats, and im glad chairman nadler, for the first time in months, has finally met them at the negotiating table. So hes talking about that same process that you are, but spelling out what is at stake with the vote today is really interesting. Let me ask you this as are public and somehow, have you got together in the house and said we were next steps would be in this process yes, we have gotten together. But its really hard because we are not in the majority. So all we can do is basically complain and vote against these outrageous harris make people aware. Yes, make people aware. I make sure the people in my district are being made aware of what is going on. Really, they are using taxpayer resources. All kinds of House Committees to go after the president. Its all about the 2020 president ial election. Thats all what its about. If they had read the Mueller Report, which im sure a number of them did, it is said definitively that there was no collusion, no conspiracy with russia, and then mueller himself did not prosecute on the obstruction of justice. He even said, mueller even said there was difficult issues that many of the things that were said by the president were done so in public. Proving corrupt intent is very difficult high standard. Its right there, its like any prosecutor. He didnt have the evidence. Harris we will see if theyre able to, if they are saying, democrats, to bring about mueller for the next couple weeks. We will see what happens. If they are reading the report, invite them to read the first 45 to 60 pages on russia and what they did. Thats what we need to be focused on. We will move to this 67 euros california man who is now the fourth american confirmed to have died this year in the Dominican Republic under mysterious circumstances. His family says he became ill almost immediately after having a scotch from his hotel room minibar at a resort input to, in punta cana in april. Phil keatings lives. Harris, according to the Dominican Republic government, this is a nonstory. Several unrelated deaths that could happen anywhere. The state department in the United States confirming that there are a number of american tourists who have recently died in the Dominican Republic, which is a very popular Tourist Destination for americans. This latest case happens, we are learning, in june at the Hard Rock Hotel in punta cana. 67yearold robert wallace, according to his wife, went to the minibar, had a scotch, became ill, and then died. His death occurred about a month for three american tourists were found dead at adjacent beach resorts on the tropical caribbean island. All of them became sick and died after exhibiting similar symptoms, including pulmonary edema, which is fluid in the lungs, and large hearts, as well as respiratory failure. While the centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization are there looking into all of this, no one has established any links whatsoever between the deaths. Several of the deaths happened at the bahia principe, and allinclusive resort on punta cana at the tip of the island. Officials say they are awaiting toxicology reports but family members stateside are skeptical of any conclusions that come from the dr. I think there has always been a question, as to how did this happen for a relatively Healthy Woman on her way to vacation just to enjoy herself . And within 48 hours, that she dies . She had a drink from her rooms minibar the night that she arrived, and another one not long after that, she collapsed and died. Another one of the women, she also had a drink in her room, went to bed, and never woke up. The fbi is assisting the local Law Enforcement down at the Dominican Republic on the island, but again, nobody has made any sort of conclusion as to a causal link between the four american tourists that have turned up dead this year in the Dominican Republic, and six the total, including last year. If you go back to the early 2000s when we were making more arrests, we were dealing with the same people over and over again. If we were doing it that many of us, we are probably dealing with 8,000 people. Right now every Single Person may arrest ultimately ends up getting released into the United States. So we are dealing with more people today than weve ever dealt with before. This is by far the largest crisis weve ever faced. They are getting news of just horrible stories of children being brought in the conditions that they are living through, and used. What can we do immediately for that process . The horrible abuses the children are going through is horrendous, to hear the stories i was just there for 30 days processing these family units, and hear the stories is absolutely heartbreaking and horrendous. Whats most frustrating and upsetting to Border Patrol agents assisted the democrats stonewall what needs to be done in order to fix this problem. That they care about these people, but yet they wont fix it and they put it in the hands of the smugglers. Harris but theres been criticism from democrats that the reason why we are at this crisis, the humanitarian crisis point, is because of something that republicans or the president is doing. Harris after months of negotiations, california lawmakers under a new budget agreement will allow young adults living in the country illegally to be eligible for some of the States Jonathan hunt is live in los angeles with details. Jonathan, not everybody is happy about this. No, they are not. With the full California State Legislature has not yet voted on it. It is scheduled to give final approval to the budget by june 15th. If it does, california will indeed become the first state in the country to allow some undocumented immigrants to sign up for statefunded health benefits. Governor gavin newsom has been pushing the idea since taking office, and it will go into effect on january 1st next year if that final approval is won later this week. Here is who will be eligible for the coverage under californias Medicaid Program undocumented immigrants between the ages of 19 and 25. Thats about 90,000 people. The cost to california taxpayer taxpayers, 98 million. The older undocumented immigrants will not get coverage, and that has left some advocacy groups disappointed. We do hope ultimately to get to a place where california can ultimately cover the entire document of population, but certainly we were disappointed not to see those 30,000 seniors get covered in this cycle. California lawmakers see the expanded coverage is possible because of what they call an extraordinary state budget surplus. But Governor Newsom had argued that giving coverage to the entire california undocumented population would have cost and untenable three and a half billion dollars. Any statements, he hailed the new budget as a good deal for the state, saying, the budget adopted by the Conference Committee is balanced, creates historic reserves, and expands budget resiliency. Interestingly, harris, the budget according to documents released last nights stockpiling billions of dollars in anticipation of an economic downturn.
