Proud. Harris chief White House Correspondent john roberts live from the north lawn, certainly something to see. A Good Relationship for the world to view today. A lot of body language there. It was a real shocker when we heard that he she was resigning this morning. It has obtained her letter of resignation which is actually dated october 3rd. So the white house has been sitting on this probably to let the kavanaugh hearings on the confirmation process on the swearing and go through. In this letter, nikki haley talked about the relationship between her and the president and said that she accepted the position of november of 2016 based on some conditions which included serving in your cabinet and on the National Security council and being free to speak my mind on the issues of the day. You made those commitments and you have absolutely kept them all. For that, too, i will always be grateful. Nikki haley said basically shes been in Public Office for 14 years. She things its time to move on. Listen to what she said in the oval office with the president. A lot of people are going to want to say theres a lot of reasons why im leaving. The truth is, i want to make sure that this administration and the president has the strongest person to fight. It was a blessing to go into the u. N. With body armor every day and defend america, and ill always that. Ill never truly step aside from fighting for our country. But i think its time. She said she is going to step away from running for politics at least in the year 2020 and she said preemptively, as far as a rod in 2020, i am not going to run in 2020. Ill be supporting President Trump. Now turns to a successor who will be the next United Nations ambassador, a couple names being kicked around. Ric grenell back in the early years of the Bush Administration as a spokesperson for the United Nations they are in new york city. Dena powell who is a deputy National Security advisor here in the early days also being talked about. A number of people would really like the job. Listen here. We have a number of people that would very much like to do it. Its a great position, and nikki realize that. I think shes helped make it a much better position, if you want to know the truth. I think its become a more glamorous position than it was two years ago. Not everyone praising nikki haleys departure. Senator Roberts Menendez of new jersey with a statement, he voted for her confirmation which was 964 back in 2017 saying in a statement todays announcement that Ambassador Haley is resigning as it another side of the Trump Administrations chaotic Foreign Policy and step back from promoting American Values and priorities. I am deeply concerned about the leadership vacuum she leaves in the National Security impact of her departure. The continued disarray for this administration. That doesnt exactly square the circle with the way the president did this, nikki haley said shes going to stay on until january of 2019. The president didnt just send out a piece of paper and she disappears in the middle of the night from the administration. This seems to be on the surface and orderly plan for her retirement and for somebody else to come in, so im not sure where the chaos in the disarray comes from. Harris what youre saying is the opposite of disarray and this from the party of women. I didnt hear that ringing endorsement and may be its in further paragraphs are first paragraphs then what youve read. But certainly the opposite of disarray. Let me just say that i have seen plenty of disarray in this white house, but this was not a case of that. The seem to be a case of an orderly transition. Harris youve given me some information to go forth with, i appreciate that, think he was always. Going to bring in now the Florida Republican sitting in the House Foreign Affairs committee. He also chairs the subcommittee on asia and pacific. Thank you for being with me, always great to see you. Can we start with the politics of this . Very happy to be on. Harris i am a little confused how you take a look at what unfolded inside the oval office today and you see it as menendez did from new jersey so differently from what was actually happening. I agree. They talk about the disarray, the disarray was when President Trump came in. Our Foreign Policy was in disarray. Nikki haley has done a phenomenal job bringing group back to what america stands for. And like she said, weve got respect around the world. And they may not like what we do but they know what we mean when we say something. We mean what we say we follow through on that and i think thats a testament to her in her leadership and President Trump for appointing her. Harris so when you look at Ambassador Haley saying the words today that america is respected again on the world stage, what gaps have been filled . You know the north korea portion of the so well with your subcommittee. What has she and the president been able to do that wasnt done before . I think of them working together, if you look at just the north korea deal, President Trump sitting down with kim jong un. The First Time Ever in american president has done that and that forces his tenacity, but also the tenacity that nikki haley has shown over and over again at the u. N. For pulling out of the paris climate record. Those are the size of decisions that were made by a leader in the nikki haley goes around and articulates that message at the u. N. I can tell you firsthand traveling around around the asiapacific region the difference in tone and this administration versus the Previous Administration especially if you look in the asia Pacific Theater and they talk about the strategic patients that president obama moved in leadership from behind. Weve moved away from that and they know that and they appreciate it. Harris the big question i have just in terms of the timing because shell exit january 2019, there still time to get done some more things. Weve been talking about a possibility of north korea, kim jong un and President Trump having a second summit. There is still time, weeks and months left for the stock to go forward. It is. And we are doing it stepbystep. Secretary pompeo has just been ordered to meet with kim jong un and to meet with xi jinping or their ambassador. And is it going to be a stepbystep process, the thing we need to make need to make sure steve said and what we are trying to accomplish which is complete denuclearization of the korean peninsula. If you get all parties on board i. E. China and russia, this will happen a lot easier and a lot smoother and will get over a lot faster. Harris you know Foreign Policy so welcome i often wonder whether or not a change of hands at critical points even matters all that much if you have a good method and a good policy moving forward. What are your thoughts on that . I think youre absolutely right. If you know where youre going and thats why its so critical in the beginning to map out what is our ultimate goal and if you do that, you get to buy in from the size you negotiate, thats what makes it palatable for people if you have these things laid out and thats why its so strategically important to define what is the goal there, what does denuclearization means the United States, what does it mean to north korea, south korea, and other partners . And what is verification . We dont want to make steps at the last three administrations have done with north korea and certainly not the terrible deal with the previsit administration did with iran that we had to pull out and backtrack a little bit to get that corrected. So if you have knowing what you want to accomplish, its a lot easier. Harris the country owes a debt of gratitude to the leadership of nikki haley from what youre saying because all that you just described has been accomplished in about 24 months. Thats pretty impressive. Congressman, thank you very much. Good to see you. Thank you, have a great day. Harris reaction from the other side of the political aisle which sometimes is not all that different when youre talking about nikki haley. California congressman brad sherman, great to see you. A member of the House Foreign Affairs committee. Ranking democrat and i would say probably a friend on the former congressman yoho who we just moments ago. If you guys hit on that same subcommittee together. Nikki haley, her departure today, your reaction . She was an effective diplomat, should be missed. I dont think the president will find anybody better to fill the spot. It seems very peculiar that the announcement was made before the Midterm Elections, and theyll certainly talk that she might be appointed to become senator from South Carolina if Lindsey Graham ends up in the administration. So time will tell. Harris thats a lot of tea leaf reading. I usually drink my tea. Let me ask you this. You talk about her being in effective diplomat. What credit do you give nikki haley from across the political aisle for so many of the things that we are seeing unfold on a global stage now . I certainly disagree with most of the commentary that this has been an effective Foreign Policy, it hasnt been. But nikki haley has put a good face on it. Shes had to defend some outrageous positions and keep in mind, we have far more Nuclear Weapons in north korea now than we had at the beginning of the Trump Administration. We have less support in europe than we had at beginning of the Trump Administration and i dont blame nikki haley for that. Shes been an effective spokesperson for what has been a very flawed Foreign Policy. Harris congressman sherman, would you say the summit with kim jong un, would you say the reports yesterday of access to the missile sites and even some Nuclear Sites moving forward in north korea, you would not say that those things our progress in terms of open communication that did not exist prior . Weve had communication with the north koreans. And they have taken a few steps. We will see what happens. But theyve also created as we speak to create ten more Nuclear Weapons. They have stopped testing those weapons because they already know what theyre doing. And our sanctions have been fairly ineffective. Their economy is as strong now as it was two years ago and we push the administration, the sanction Major Chinese banks, we signed a letter demanding action and it was ignored. And for that reason, the north korean economy is not in shambles, they are not dealing from a position of weakness, they are getting closer to the chinese, and we can talk about denuclearization, but i would think were going to see it. Harris you see it so differently on that subcommittee. It is amazing that you can get together and move forward. That must be very frustrating. When you look at where china is right now, theyre about to they are hurting. Youve seen the sanctions, youve seen the tears. Its interesting because that relationship with north korea, you are correct on. If china is hurting, its going to affect north korea. Is there anything positive . You called nikki haley in effective diplomat, i want to make this about her departure. Anything bringing to the table as they move forward, the nation awaits with the president will bring forward for that position. Given an erratic Foreign Policy that has been allowed or but not necessarily effective, i think she put the best possible face on it. I dont think she could be replaced by someone near as good and we will have to see how things develop. He went even some of the that you would choose . The president has not asked me for advice on who to select, and if i wanted to prevent somebody from being selected, i would endorse them right now. Harris okay. Congressman sherman, thank you very much. New Supreme Court Justice Brett kavanaugh took the bench for the first time today. President trump apologizing on behalf of the nation for what he called a democrat lead smear campaign. Well talk about the effect of those remarks with the midterms looming. Plus, new reaction to u. N. Ambassador nikki haleys resignation and what it can mean for how our nation deals with north korea, iran among other volatile nations. More on this, live report from the state department ahead of the rnc coming up as well. Stay close. That was really the thing i think she did best. She got to know the players. She got to know china, russia, india. She knows everybody on a very firstname basis. Theres little rest for a single dad, and back pain made it hard to sleep and get up on time. Then i found aleve pm. The only one to combine a safe sleep aid, plus the 12 hour pain relieving strength of aleve. Im back. Aleve pm for a better am. P3 its meat, cheese and nuts. I keep my protein interesting. Oh yea, me too. I have cheese and uh these herbs. P3 snacks. The more interesting way to get your protein. Harris a fox news alert now, reaction still coming in from around the globe to u. N. Ambassador nikki haleys announcement of resignation today. She has played a key role in pushing the administrations policy goals on iran and north korea among other volatile countries. Rich edson still gathering information as it comes in from other countries of the state department with more now. World leaders like most here in the state department were surprise this morning to hear that nikki haley was residing leaving the Trump Administration at the end of the year. She really began the trump Foreign Policy at the United Nations moving forward, being very vocal from what were very traditional republican Foreign Policy positions at a time where World Leaders were trying to figure out what exactly trump Foreign Policy meant to them and meant for the entire world. She was very outspoken on issues like russia, on human rights early on. And often found herself at odds with the secretary of state rex tillerson. She had a very high profile early on and there were questions sometimes as to who exactly was setting the tone for american Foreign Policy. The Trump Administration haley included has also been very supportive israel, pulling out of the iran nuclear deal, moving the embassy to jerusalem. Thank you nikki haley, thank you for standing for truth without fear, thank you for representing the values common to israel in the United States. If european allies were sometimes at odds with the Trump Administration over those issues as the u. S. Withdrew from the u. N. Human rights council, pulled funding from a u. N. Palestinian Aid Organization citing political bias and mismanagement. Though she also worked with those allies and adversaries to enact harsh economic sanctions against north korea, pressure venezuelas government, and thats much of the work that shes got left to do and 2018, something shes been talking about all throughout the summer. Keeping the pressure up on north korea the Trump Administration can keep the kim regime at the table negotiating over that Nuclear Weapons program. Harris thank you so very much. Appreciate it. Bringing in now matthew swift, chairman and ceo of the concordia summit. You know the Ambassador Haley and you have hosted her numerous times in concordia. What are your initial thoughts as you hear about her departure today . I think first and celebrating what i think has been an incredible career for her at the u. N. Its a very, very difficult and public aid job. At times, the relationship between the u. N. In the United States is not an easy one to manage. I think she came in, she followed through on a lot of the expectations you set from the beginning and end this case like in other cases in her career, she served your country well. Harris nothing is without politics these days. So on one side of the isle among democrats, if you are watching senator menendez talking about a point of disarray for the white house and john roberts and i didnt agree because the seam to roll out quite methodically and smoothly and there was so much more, he was in the room, a lot of smile and that sort of thing. But when you look at this, it also communicates something about Foreign Policy to the world that it will go on. And that there is a platform set, a doctor and if you will for this president and she is part of that. She is a huge part of that you have to remember to weeks ago, she hosted the president here in new york for the u. N. General assembly and so was an incredibly important time for her. You can certainly see the timing of this a
