as smoothly as they could but also battling a lot with her own leadership in terms of what they have at hand. no power, no utilities. they have done a remarkable job says the president, now he was on the ground give that residential handshake and reassurance. we will cover that visit as it rolls out this hour. keep watching. >> sandra: fox news alert. on the aftermath of the las vegas massacre, a lot of new information coming in on the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. 59 people killed, more than 500 others wounded. as investigators are now trying to find out what drove him to fire round after round on thousands of people at a concert. this is "outnumbered." i'm sandra smith. here today, harris faulkner. a former deputy spokesperson for the state department marie harf a public and strategist and fox news contributor lisa boothe is here and today's one lucky guy, fox news contributor ari fleischer and he is outnumbered. good to have you. the new system stuff. tough week. >> it is and the president's task this week is to be the listener in chief. when presidents go into situations like this whether it's puerto rico, whether it's las vegas, it is actually heartwarming for the victims and the families to be able to know i have the ear of the president. i want to have him here what my loved one meant to me. people want to talk, the job is to listen. >> sandra: the nation is morning after a gunman unleashed fire into a crowd of more than 22,000 people below. 59 of them never made it home. so many more still in the hospital fighting for their lives. people are lining up to donate blood to the hospitals. we are told they were overflowing with victims in need of help. meanwhile, visuals are taking place to remember the lives lost. mayor carolyn goodman spoke at city hall. >> know that our city has a broken heart. everybody in this community has been so touched by the loss of these lives and the horror of that mentally sick, horrible, human being who has taken into his hands devastation and imprinted in our minds forever a day and that really doesn't belong in our fabulous, beautiful city. >> sandra: adam housley has been covering for us on the ground in las vegas, and he has the latest. adam? >> those vigils, those comments made by the mayor, seems like you can go nowhere in vegas without meeting somebody who has a direct connection to what happened here. we are getting also a better layout of how this all went down. we have a map we put together to give you an idea as to another police helicopter comes into survey the scene. the map gives you an idea of this all being laid out in the las vegas strip. you can see the mandalay bay hotel and across the street a vacant lot which is where the concert was taking place. we also now have the perspective of the government, and it goes into the investigation of how this man planned this out in advance to be able to get this room. this is an exclusive video given to us by jason hoffman from philadelphia area. he's been here last year for the exact same concert and decided to walk into the room and basically showed us this great, this beautiful two room suite that would unfortunately one year later become the site of such a massive carnage and a horrible situation. you can see the view down is very clear. there's no obstructions and he had two different angles to look down upon. >> sandra: i'm going to break in. we've got the president beating briefed in puerto rico on the devastation there. he is on the ground getting briefed. prez met there's no doubt about it, you are a general. there's a reason you're a general. but no games. i said give me a general. i don't want to have a general that plays games. and you've done a fantastic job. the whole team has been amazing. here governor, who i didn't know. i heard a very good about him. he's not even from my party and he started right at the beginning appreciating what we did. he was tremendously supportive, and he knew the level of problem that you had at the beginning before and the level of what happened with respect to the tremendous storms that hit your beautiful island. and governor, i just want to tell you that right from the beginning, this governor did not play politics. he didn't play it at all. he was saying it like it was, and he was giving it straight and i want to on behalf of the country, i want to thank you. [applause] i also want to thank your congresswoman, who actually represents the largest number of people of any congressperson in the united states. i know that. it's three and a half million people, jennifer, right? so congresswoman jennifer gonzales, who i watched the other day she was saying such nice things about all of the people that have worked so hard. do you think you could say a little bit what you said about us today? is not about me, it's about these incredible people from the military, to fema, this first responders. i've never seen people working so hard in my life. perhaps you could say. >> thank you, mr. president. the first thing is that before we were hit by maria, we were hit by hurricane irma. and during that time before the hurricane, fema was acting together with more than 4,000 people were here on the island. different branches of the military. navy, army, fema, and all the staff working together before the hurricane hit. they were here before, during, after the first hurricane, and they continue to stay on the island boots on the ground during maria. same thing. i think we never got the level of communication between the federal government and the local government like never before. and we are here again. and never before category 5. the devastation is unheard of. during all this time, we got the federal government by our side doing the jobs of the people here like you and america are doing, all the questions and requests of the government of the president and his cabinet accomplish it and send more people and continue to send more people, trucks, drivers, and resources. thank you, mr. president, for all your eight to the island. >> i want to thank you because you are really generous and i saw all those comments and everybody saw those comments, and we really appreciate it. it's so important when you have men and women that have worked so hard and so long, and many of them came from two other catastrophic hurricanes. they came from texas, they came from louisiana, they came from florida, and how many nights rest have you gotten? to zero in the last month. >> day 43. >> we are going to keep them by another couple of weeks and by that time, come here, special guy, i will tell you. [applause] in addition to tom, i also want to thank linda mcmahon, small business. i always joke. i say she's in charge of small business, but small business is massive businessman you added altogether. and she has done an incredible job. both the great pumping with her husband, vince mcmahon, and i wanted her so badly for this position. and the me tell you, this woman has been amazing business and is now doing an incredible job and we want to thank you very much. [applause] and mick mulvaney is here, right there, and make is in charge of a thing called budget. i hate to tell you, but you've sown our budget a little out of whack because we spent a lot of money on puerto rico and that's fine. we saved a lot of lives. every death is a horror, but if you look at the real catastrophe like katrina and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died and you look at what happened here was really a storm that was totally overpowering, nobody's ever seen anything like this, what is your death count? 16 people. 16 people versus in the thousands, you can be very proud of all of your people, all of our people, 16 verses literally thousands of people. you can be very proud. everyone around around the tabd everybody watching can really be very proud of what has taken place in puerto rico. i also want to pay a very special thanks to the navy. who was here from the navy? what a job. you have ships all over the place. i saw them flying in. this looks like a very big stuff. the job you've done getting things here, no doc said have been -- they were just devastated. there were no docs, no nothing. so i want to thank the navy. would you like to say something? [applause] >> come back your wavy team is here. ready to handle anything that happens and immediately reposition and able to respond to puerto rico right after mari maria. demonstrate our ability. >> thank you very much. i don't have to even mention because we have general kelly. where is general kelly? he likes to keep a low profile. look at him sitting in the back. he is watching. you have no idea. in general kelly, come appear paid general kelly is a four-star, not a bad general. you don't get any better than general kelly. on the behalf of the marines. can we also mention army can we also mention some people that i really got to know and respect even more in texas, and that's the coast guard. what a job the coast guard has done throughout this whole thin thing. throughout this whole ordeal. they would go right into the middle of that, and i wouldn't want to be doing it, but i want to thank everybody. i want to thank the coast guard. they are special, very brave people. a lot of people got to see the real coast guard during this incredible trouble. especially a thing here and in texas was incredible what they did so thank you all very much and we appreciate it. really appreciate it. would you like to say something on behalf of your men and women? >> i know that. [indistinct] >> now the runways are pretty open. >> yes, sir, . four major runways are fully operational. amazing job. so amazing that we are ordering hundreds of millions of dollars worth of new airplanes for the air force, especially the f35. do you like the five? how does it do in the fights and how did they do in fights with the f35? we do very well, you can't see it. literally, you can't see it. so it's hard to find a plan that you can't see, right? but that's an expensive plane that you can't see. and as you probably heard, we got very substantial, something that other administrations would never have done. that i can tell you. so thank you very much. where is the coast guard? who can speak on behalf of the coast guard? where is our coast guard representative? get over here. come here. on behalf of the coast guard, just say a few words. >> i don't think there's anything that the men and women of the coast guard would rather do than help the people of puerto rico. our fellow american citizens, for else, this is what we get to do on a daily basis and getting to help our fellow citizens is just what our duty is all about. it's a pleasure to be here. >> in texas, it came in, it's a devastation, went right out to the coast, then it came in and it came in three times. it was loaded up with water and nobody's ever seen water like that. the coast guard would go in and it moves 16,000 rides. hard to believe. between the helicopters and all of them, but the coast guard itself in texas, 16,000 lives, and they went right to that hurricane and there aren't too many people who could've done done it, believe me. say a few words. please. a few words. customs and border protection. say a few words. don't be shy. what i would like to do. you want to stand up, go ahead. go ahead. >> sandra: just a few moments after president trump and the first lady landed on the ground in puerto rico to assess the damage left by hurricane maria, the president saying i've never seen people working so hard in my life. he said the puerto rico governor did not play politics. he called the whole team there on the ground amazing. he was speaking at the air national guard base in puerto rico. he spent a lot of time thanking the officials there, one of the congresswoman saying thank you for all you were doing, president trump, for this island. linda mcmahon, mick mulvaney, general kelly from president trump's team were all present. thinking the army coast guard and navy and national guard. ari fleischer is on the couch with a spirit you have been watching the president and his words with us, and this is just moments after he got on the ground in puerto rico. is he striking the right tone, saying the right things? >> ari: very much like his first visit in houston when he had an organizational meeting with the first responders and the mayors who were organized for the response. his tone, the things he focuses on organizational leaders tones. i think later today, it's going to be very important for the president to get out with the people of puerto rico and talk about the suffering and talk about their lives, listening to their stories, that human element. it is very important and the duty of the president to thank the first responders. it puts more energy, gives them a boost, tells them what you're doing is meaningful and important in that pat on the back by the commander-in-chief does play an important role in the response of the first responders. >> sandra: because the people on the ground there as we know, so many of them still without power, clean drinking water, still devastation in puerto rico. >> harris: some of legislation that was moved out of the way. we have a brigadier general who was leading the army national guard there, dustin scholz, and she has been there on that base on that island throughout this entire thing and i you have all of these other resources. i appreciate what you say in terms of the organizational because anyone watching this might have a question about why it felt rather forensic, but it has to because the president's first before he get that hands-on tour. from what you're saying, he has to make sure everyone is doing really what they're doing and give them a pat on the back and give them even more motivated but he has simply go ahead when coming into this. >> ari: donald trump is an organizational man pretty comes from the business community. people are looking for him to be the huggy smiley person, that's not his nature. >> harris: he can be that. >> ari: will be interesting to see what happens for the rest of the day with the public. >> sandra: he is there and in times of crisis like this, a disaster that puerto rico faces right now, it still can be comforting to have him there. >> marie: this will be important. i wanted to see little bit more empathy, more emotion. praising the military is very important but some of the praise he talked for himself or the administration this morning before he left washington when he said we've got an a+ in texas and florida and i think were getting the same in puerto rico. it feels a little at odds with the situation on the ground where you have 80 or 90% of the people still without power. when he talked about being very proud of the job they did in the same sentence as 16 people dying in, the tone to me is just a little bit off. i what it is a little more heart and a little more realistic look at what's happening on the island and their plans for fixing it. not just praise, but plans. >> if you watch other networks, how many times have you seen this be put in the context of president trump's katrina? there's a bulk of the media that wants us to be president trump in katrina and that's very in tune with that. you have all the elected officials in puerto rico praising president trump outside of this one mayor. who has the bulk of the media focused on, the mayor of san juan. he even had mayor next to her praising president trump saying that that particular mayor was playing politics and is not even attending the meeting. so i think president trump is also very aware of that as well. >> harris: we will move on. the las vegas massacre is once again sparking a fierce debate over gun control in our nation's capital, and only took an egg timer's length of time for this to get political. democrats actually accusing republicans of being unintentionally complicit. our gun laws the issue here or is this more partisan politics? law enforcement officials are racing to find exactly why 64-year-old man who committed suicide and committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern u.s. history before he did so, why he did it. the brother of stephen paddock says he saw no warning signs. all this as we learn more details about the arsenal of weapons at the suspected killer's disposal. in addition to the 23 firearms and high-capacity magazines in his mandalay bay hotel room, police say they uncovered nearly 20 additional weapons at his home in a retirement community near mesquite nevada. along with explosives and thousands of rounds of ammunition. chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge joins is now live from washington, an hour by hour of been watching the reports. with the latest? >> the u.s. government officials tell fox news investigators are doing a full review of stephen paddock's travel history and they are drilling down on his financial transactions as well as personal relationships looking for unusual activity or a sudden dramatic event. paddock was wealthy, had a real fascination with guns. his father as we been widely reporting was among the fbi's most wanted bank robbers. before his girlfriend, he had two ex-wives. the sheriff and his team responded to reporting that the 12 recently transferred a lot of money out of the country to the philippines. >> we are hunting down and tracing down every single clue that we can get in his background. until we confirm all of those things that are floating around out in the media and social media, i can't comment on that. >> authorities say paddock used his girlfriend marilou danley's identification at the mandalay bay resort and casino. an online professional profile that is now disabled in. he was a gambling casino professional. told fox news that she could be interviewed by an fbi representative suggesting the bureau cannot force her to return to the u.s. because she is not charged with any crime. as you mentioned with every hour, the investigation seems to expand. now with four active scenes, the hotel suite on the 32nd floor was two adjoining rooms were the shooter used scopes and tripods to increase control and accuracy. the music venue, the shooter's home in mesquite, as well as the fourth property in northern nevada. isis has released a new video today telling itself the attack. the fbi continues to deny the link to any international terrorism. >> harris: let's bring it back to the couch. as we look at what's going on around this investigation, see a lot of tools getting put into place. one of the big questions is what is the hotel going to do in response? we are seeing some reports of hotels heightening their security. >> ari: frankly, the only thing they can do and i think it's going to exceed everybody's capabilities. you what you do when presidents come to town, deploy counter snipers upon riffs so if somebody breaks a window, they're there to see it. you can't do that everywhere. you can barely do it anywhere. you have to have an army to do it to protect the president. i don't think there's a solution here for a repeat type of crime like this. you can't tighten security in every way. >> harris: what's so interesting about that, we had yesterday who was a detective here in new york who worked after 9/11 and he said you can't prevent this, but you can bulk up the force. almost like an air marshal on a plane, see you get all the off-duty police officers at any given time, out of all of them, you're only employing a third every eight hour shift and you take that 66%, extrapolate that out, give them some overtime possibilities and get them to be on uniformed walking amongst the public so you don't prevent it but when it starts, you can stop it faster. that was just one idea. what are your thoughts? >> marie: in our country because of our freedoms and everything we enjoy here, we have millions of soft targets. malls, sporting events, concerts. if we wanted to start screening everyone that went to these places all the time, a, i don't think we would want to as a country, and b, it would be impossible. i think ari is right put in a country like ours where we have these kinds of freedoms, there are a lot of opportunities to people who are crazy or angry or whatever the motive is, we will learn more about that, to inflict damage. what we have seen in places his people try to step up law enforcement particularly first responders and limit the amount of damage. >> harris: and the big question two has been all along, how did we made it get it along the way connect >> sandra: in this case, the female companion is going to be a key component. you have to assume that once they can actually sit down to question her and talk to her, they're going to learn a lot more. >> ari: the other thing we haven't had time to run down as a social media and his emails. we don't know the answers yet. >> harris: i imagine that authorities have. no doubt. after his or that to puerto rico today, president trump is going to head to las vegas. that happens tomorrow. how he needs to respond and the renewed call for gun control and the grief gripping the community there in vegas and all around the world. at everybody ignores me when i drive. it's fine, 'cause i get a safe driving bonus check every six months i'm accident-free. and i don't share it with mom. right, mom? right. safe driving bonus checks, only from allstate. switching to allstate is worth it. only from allstate. the morning walk until... it... wasn't. don't let type 2 diabetes get between you and your heart. even if you reach your a1c goal you are still at risk for heart attack or stroke. talk to your health care provider today about diabetic heart disease. and find out more at heartoftype2.com. your heart and type 2 diabetes. make the connection. >> sandra: the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history could be a big test for president trump read he made a well-received call for unity when he addressed the massacre yesterday. plan to visit las vegas tomorrow, democrats are increasing their calls for stricter gun control. >> this is a uniquely american problem. there is an unintentional endorsement that gets sent to these mass murders went after slaughter after slaughter, congress does nothing. if the greatest deliberative body in the world doesn't act in unison to condemn them, their policy change, it starts to feel and look like complicity. >> what happened in las vegas was just another horrible example of people with too many guns and too few restraints being able to now kill, i guess it's up to 58, and injure 500. i just find it terrible and sickening. pickle americans need more than our presidents prayers. we need his plans. >> the nation is counting on yo you. >> sandra: white house press secretary sarah sanders says now is not the time for such talk. >> there's a time and place for a political debate. but now is the time to unite as a country. one of the things that we don't want to do is try to create laws that won't create or stop these types of things from happening. if you look to chicago, where you've had over 4,000 victims of gun related crimes, they restricted gun laws in the country, that certainly hasn't help there. >> sandra: that is sarah sanders during your old job, ari fleischer. she was very emotional yesterday and that white house press briefing. called for unity, how are they doing with this messaging because right now it seems the left is running with a completely different narrative. >> ari: the president was pitch-perfect yesterday but his remarks were touching, they were emotional, they were human. he talked about scripture, he talked about people who are suffering. now we see what happens when he gets to vegas. the important part when he's on the ground and he is meeting with people who lost their loved ones. i sat down and many meetings with president bush where he met people who lost their loved ones whether it was because of war or because of natural disaster or september 14th here in new york city. it is so meaningful to somebody to be able to reach the president and say i want you to know who my husband was. this is the president's role as a listener as i alluded to earlier. that's what he needs to do when he gets to vegas tomorrow. he doesn't yet need, and i hope nobody yet needs, i understand the desire, but let's wait on the policy solutions if there are any. this is a time for empathy and i think that's with the president needs to capture. >> sandra: meanwhile, it just feels like the conversation has gotten so political so fast when there are still hundreds of people in those emergency rooms in las vegas struggling for their lives. >> marie: i make two points, the first is that president trump has not hesitated to advocate for policy right in the wake of other tragedies, particularly terrorist attacks in europe. he uses those attacks to advocate for the refugee band, for example. you can't kind of pick and choose when you advocate for policy and when you don't. i would say this. mass shootings are getting more frequent and more deadly. and for me, if there is legislation that can prevent one american from dying, i think we should take a look at it. i'm not saying we should take a look at it today, i'm not saying we should take a look at it tomorrow, i'm saying we need to have a conversation in this country about why this is happening and why more people are dying. i don't know the answer. we need to ask the question. >> harris: we had orlando, we've had san bernardino, and for different reasons and different motives among all these people. we have these mass shootings who, aurora, colorado, in that movie theater. we've had opportunities to talk about this. so why don't lawmakers talk about it when there isn't a crisis i guess is the question? hold on one second. senator schumer has just called on president trump to bring together congressional leaders on gun safety at this point. he wants to have that happen today. the president is headed to las vegas. i just scream politics when i see stuff like this, like if chuck schumer paying attention to what the actual facts are right on what needs to happen? >> ari: i am not in the democratic camp on this, i don't think gun control is a solution on this but i do understand the huge human nature that says let's think about how we prevent it from happening again. i'm not willing to say it's all politics. i just think people are writer people are wrong on what the solution is. people have a right to claim or try to deal with it. >> sandra: i have to leave it there. you have a quick comment? >> lisa: it and was going to say in the wake of vegas, politicians on the less are showing us the worst of society and it's the everyday american on the ground that show us the best of society, helping people they don't know. we saw gofundme page for the victims, $684,000.04 hours, hundreds of people lining up and down the street to give blood. in some respects, those politicians have shown us the worst and average americans have shown us the best. >> sandra: late-night tivo host going off last night, if you stayed up for it, you saw them slamming republicans in pushing for gun control. after the las vegas massacre. and they were not the only ones. the mainstream media crossed the line by immediately politicizing this attack? do something the last two presidents haven't been able to do. pass any kind of common sense gun control legislation. the vast majority of americans want. >> i don't know why our so-called leaders continue to allow this to happen or may be a better question, why we continue to allow them to let it happen. with all due respect, your thoughts and your prayers are insufficient. we have a major problem with the gun violence in this country and i guess they don't care. >> lisa: so i want to get your take on this. a lot of people up there that were probably trump supporters. we had someone who is affiliated with pbs taking to facebook saying she doesn't feel sympathy because they were probably republicans. what is your take of the media's response so far? >> ari: as i saw those guys in these morning newsletters i read quoting these late time comedians, i put them in the category with the emmys and the oscars and the late-night shows. i just will not watch or participate. because it has nothing to do with that my life. these are liberal left-wing comedians who speak to their audience and then this is part of the division of america. we didn't used to have that take place in the late-night shows. now it's all about politics. i'll say my politics for when i want my politics and i will just ignore these people. >> harris: talking about the nfl, the nba. >> lisa: it's even broader. i mentioned cnn's making mention that there probably trump supporters pretty why make that statement and what do you make just outside of these, and does the coverage of this, what happens to the coverage with this when we've seen the hysteria involving trump himself, that escalate the way that even something like this would be covered? >> ari: i think what it does is it takes people who would otherwise want to be in the center and push them towards trump because the statements are so vile. i've known him since he was a reporter for a local iowa newspaper and i watched him rise and have a nice national career and i cannot understand why he would say something like that. it is just a tawdry part of journalism where it's a must as if you have to posture to say something that is the most rubbing in someone's face. international calamity? >> harris: i would say you're saying journalism, i'd say it's that tawdry part of some people's hearts. it's quick bait. that's why they say it, they want you to click on them and say their name out loud. we will say it and call you out. >> lisa: i have question because ari brought up the political divide that we are facing in the country but do you think someone like hillary clinton, when she goes off the bat immediately referencing something like silencers also invoking the nra name while simultaneously saying that we shouldn't allow politics to be part of this conversation clearly making it political by referencing the nra immediately, those comments have been called exploitative, relevant, having nothing to do with what has taken place in las vegas. do you think, is like that immediately while there is still identifying victims, doesn't that play a role in dividing the country even further? >> marie: on this issue, after mass shooting after mass shooting after mass shooting, i am okay talking about policy. and that's not always -- yes, there are politics and everything, but i think it's okay red >> lisa: what if it has nothing to do with what happen? >> marie: it has to do with the larger gun culture in our country, the fact that we are seeing more mass shootings. i am more comfortable if people respond to this kind of tragedy by saying what can we do? and on the late-night host, let me jump in on that for a second. i agree that people are probably turning them off because of this, but i also think some of us for should think about these are fundamental issues. health care, the right to feel safe when you go to a concert. >> sandra: how about acknowledging the heroes on the ground? >> marie: absolutely. >> lisa: if they want to get political, how about talk about this horrible, horrific man that carried out this act and the acts of bravery that we saw. before under the democrats did yesterday as well. >> harris: i didn't hear anything about the military personnel on the ground plugging bullet holes with fingers. >> lisa: go back to what i said before raising these politicians are showing us the worst of society and everyday americans that are the best of society, but yet we are supposed to rely on these individuals in washington to try to bring the country together back >> ari: one of those late-night comedians you just heard, he said how did we allow this to happen?
