Absent a significant shift in the closing weeks of the Campaign Based on the hard data we see here, it is increasingly difficult to see a path for victory for donald trump. Red states deemed solidly republican, they count for 147 votes. The leading republican states bring in 34. Thats a total of 181. A note tall shift, utah, it is yellow. That means it is in the tossup column. One recent poll puts Evan Mcmullen just behind those two. Hes running a bare bones independent campaign and there it appears to be working. That is all part of the environment that could lead to the first loss for a gop president ial contender in utah since 1964. The deep blue states you see here on the map are solidly democrat. They add up to 182. The light blue leaning democrat states add another 125, 307. If those predictions hold, they point to a win for clinton. The tossup states in yellow, you see them sprinkled around, those account for another 50 votes. In order to become the next President Trump would not only have to hold on to all of the solid and leaning gop states, hed have to win all of the tossup states and pick off some of the states that now lean democrat. With one debate and 26 days of campaigning to go he has his work cut out for him. Shannon, thank you. That new fox poll we talked about shows an 8 point lead for Hillary Clinton in a twoway race and a 7point lead in a four way. Youll note that mrs. Clinton has come up only a point while mr. Trump has lost 4 points. To dive a bit deeper into that poll we turn to the pollster and columnist, kristen anderson. Thank you for coming. Thank you for having me. What do you see . Before we get to sort of the news of the week and the scandals that have popped up, taking a look at where voters think the candidates stand on the issues. Donald trump has lost ground on the core asset that he had going for him, which was his positions on the economy. Traditionally who do you trust more is a question that donald trump is favored in. On the screen now. We have five issues and if you look at them, i dont know, is there any one on there that seems to hold any good news for mr. Trump . No, not particularly. The fact that he runs fairly close with her on the economy suggests that when hes talking about those issues thats his strongest point. The fact that hes now losing to her on that issue in addition to losing on the other key issues like health care, like Foreign Policy by such large margins really makes it hard for him to win unless he has a dramatic advantage on things like favorability, temperament which we see in this poll he does not have. Thats turned out to be kind of a key question. What else in this poll gives you a sense of where were going here . Well, when it comes to the sort of scandals and stories of the week, these respondents were asked questions about whether or not they thought that the Wikileaks Revelations about Hillary Clinton made them less likely to vote for her or whether they just made no big deal and then were asked about the access Hollywood Tapes. Did those make you less likely to vote for trump or were they no big deal . Among those who knew about the wikileaks, a majority said its no big deal. Hillary clinton takes public and private. This question we have it. That deals with the one of the more striking revelations from those wikileaks tapes, those comments she made to those wall street bankers and other rich people. Open trade, open borders. Its important to have a position thats different behind the scenes. There are lots of things in these emails that are troubling or should be surprising. So many people already werent trusting her. Only 37 thought that was a deal breaker. 57 with no big deal. Contrast that with the actions of the videos. There its split, 48 48. Half have heard of the videos saying this is a deal breaker for them. For them they can never see themselves supporting trump. So a big problem he has now is the fact that his numbers have fallen. This is not about Hillary Clintons numbers rising so much but hes dropped below 40 threshold. It typically was thought, you know, he jokes i could stand on fifth avenue and shoot someone and i wouldnt lose my voters. We may be testing that number. Hes just under 40 . Hes at 38 . That is roughly sort of where hes been, which was enough to get him the nomination in the republican party, but he obviously needed to build on that. As of tonight it appears hes back where he started, right . Thats right. And in addition to the fact that hes, you know, struggling overall, if you dig deeper into things like independents, hes tied. He had been leading there. He had been leading. Its important for a republican candidate to lead because there are simply more democrats than republicans in the country. So you have to win your own party plus win a little bit in the middle in order to take over. In fact, romney won his own party with 93 of republicans in his favor and he won the independents but by, what, 5 Percentage Points . It wasnt enough. So a tie with independents is definitely bad news for any republican nominee . Thats right. This is also having some impact further down the ballot. Also in the poll people were asked if your member of congress came out and said they were going to endorse, not endorse how would this affect your view of them . It turns out 39 of Republican Voters said they would be less likely to vote for their republican member of congress if they ahde cliedeclined to suppo very interesting. Thanks very much. September 23rd, three days before the first president ial debate the New York Times receives Donald Trumps 1995 tax return. Those were sent because the intention basically was to affect that debate with something of a bombshell like that. The times doesnt print it right away, however. They looked to verify it and it comes out instead two days before the Vice President ial debate and it dominates that news cycle. Then you go to two days before the second president ial debate and we have the access Hollywood Tape come out from someone at nbc that sent it to the washington post. And now here we are just a few days before the third president ial debate and within the span of 12 hours People Magazine, the New York Times and the Palm Beach Post all have four women that have come forward to make these allegations of unwanted sexual advances by donald trump. So if you ask me, is it fair to question the timing . I would say considering that this couldnt have been scripted any better on an episode of scandal, the answer is, yeah. Well, so but it does raise i mean, what i take it youre saying is its not that the ammunition is faulty, its that the timing of it being fired is a little questionable, right . Reporter right. Nbc reportedly knew about this tape for months, yet for whatever reason its released two days before a second president ial debate watched by 66 million people. The same thing with the tax documents. That was supposed to affect the first debate and those were sent to the New York Times three days before that debate. Timing is everything. I have a hard time believing that all of these things just came together right before large president ial debates except if it was planned that way. Its hard to dismiss that entirely. We dont know. Right. If youre going to core rio graph something, youd have the candidates say this is the stuff i do to women. That would be the access Hollywood Tape. And then you would have women come out in the aftermath of that by a few days and say this is what he did to me and its basically the same scenario that he described and of course in the intervening period when you saw that debate he was asked whether he had ever done those things and it appeared from his answer, joe, id like to know what you think about this, that he didnt really want to answer that question. He finally pressed by Anderson Cooper said, no, ive never done that. Anderson cooper asked him at least three times have you ever conducted acted in that way. So good job by cooper there to press him on that. Youre right, he wasnt answering that question. Again, im not here to sit in judgment of donald trump or these women. Were in the he said she said stage at this point. We simply dont know, but one one thing that i do find curious, the People Magazine reporter. She is a reporter, not a woman that donald trump met on a plane, she was doing the interview and said that donald trump made an unwanted sexual advance towards her. Remember, hes a star at that point. Hes on a number one show with the apprentice. This is 2005. I would think as a reporter thats the story. Im surprised she didnt go ahead and say, look, we were supposed to do a fun interview. Instead this guy is hitting on me in a way i wanted no part of. Im surprised as a reporter she didnt go to print with that at the time instead of now waiting before a president ial election. Thats a fair question to ask. It is a fair question to ask.
