FOXNEWSW On The Record With Brit Hume October 9, 2016

Trumps poll number dropping just one point. And it also shows that 74 of Republican Voters want their party to stand by trump. And cbs conducted a snap poll in ohio and reached out to voters before and then again after the video was released, among donald trump backers, 91 say this video does not change their view of him. Among all likely voters, 44 have a worse view of him but the mothority, 54 , say this does not change their view. And donald trump could have a good night and so how does he do that. The Campaign Cowboys join us. Karl rove and joe trippy. Good evening. First to you, cakarl, what he ds need to do about the controversy about that remarkable video. You are right, it doesnt affect his supporters, at least not much so far. But 8 of the 40some odd percent that he has got means he would lose a few points and that is a big margin when you are already five points behind. What he needs to do tonight is to begin he cant get it all the way back but he could begin to get back on his footing. One is by a statement of humble contrition for what he said and did. And an explanation that he feels that whatever he said ten years ago, this campaign has made him a changed man. He understands the responsibility he has to speak on behalf of change for those who put their trust and confidence in him. And then in my opinion, he needs to put the focus such as it can be on both her record as status quo and if he has any current disagreements with her, let those be over the the revelation that she says one thing to business and wall street audiences and something entirely different to democratic primary voters and general election voters and stay away from bill clinton. She is prepared for that. And she wants to be victim and aggressor. And if he thinks that this is the worst and last op dump they have on him, i suspect more tapes are coming and the more he digs in it against bill the more relevant he makes those attacks on him. And joe, how does Hillary Clinton behave tonight. Does she drive this video home or does she stick to the issues . What . I think she just gets out of trumps way and try to let him get out of this watch how he does it and then just turn to voters and say listen to what you heard just like she did in the last one. I think that this is a really tough pickle that hes in. I agree with karl, this isnt the last thing well see coming. I do agree with him. Donald trump has to do something none of us have ever seen him do before, he has to be sincerely contrite. Not teleprompter contrite. He has to be show humility and he has got to step back and if he comes after Hillary Clinton tonight, it does have to be on the issues. I think bringing up bill clinton and the past after this without humility and without being contrite and without a real apology is going to be a disaster for him. Well, is it not possible, though, joe, that there is a way into this for him to raise the fact that she countenanced her own husbands serious misbehavior with women and there is obviously one allegation of rape that has never quite gone away. And there is no way to use that and have that be effective. Is she ready for that . Could she turn that against him . I think this is going to be look, i think the clinton defense is not going to work for him tonight. But it is sort of every time hes done something, he and his supporters have said, oh, yeah, but clinton i dont think that will work here. He could try to do that. But i think the real problem here is when you go back to those polls that you were looking at, brit, it is okay even if he holds on to his supporters and karl points out if he loses a few percent of them that is bad given where he starts. But his problem was he he was trying to reach out to women, to suburban folks and to collegeeducated whites and these are the people he had to grow. Got it. And this thing really pushed him away. Karl, your thoughts on that . Well, look, i think there is one instance in which he could raise the issue of bill clinton and that is if she goes after him on this issue and goes over the top. If she is out there just lambasting him and he is given a contrite statement of apology and he feels that he is on honored ground, he has the ability to go back at her but it has to be measured and short. If she is over the top, its better to say, appreciate that but at least i did something your husband never did and i apologize for the language. Hes never apologized for his actions. And then and only then. But here the counter punch is better than the punch and it is unlikely that she will, in my opinion, go after him hot and heavy about this. She has smart people around her and they understand this thing has a life of its own, particularly if there is more stuff coming and if they have more oppo tape that drop on a convenient news outlet but if she does, he will have a brief moment to respond to it in a way that is devastating and short and not angry and more in regret than in anger. Got it karl. Well move on now. Late last week, ahead of tonights debate, but in comparison to the trump tape this is covered much less about the media. Im talking about leaked paid speeches given to wall street and other groups. Shannon bream has detailed from the unearthed speeches. We could never let wall street wreck main street again. I spoke out against wall street when i was a senator from new york. That is Hillary Clinton last april during the democratic primary. But new emails wikileaks claim are directly linked to clinton and her closest Associates Show that she repeatedly boasted of her close ties to wall street including the mark e remarks made to a law firm that, quote when i was a senator from new york, i represented and worked with so many talented principaled people. And Hillary Clinton said one thing on the campaign trail and another behind closed doors. It is a suspicion she seemed to confirm herself in a 2013 speech she gave to the national multihousing council. Quote, if everybody is watching, all of the back room discussions and the deals and then people get nervous to say the least. So you need both a public and a private position. We came out of the white house not only dead broke but in debt. That is clinton in 2014. Just two months earlier she allegedly told Goldman Sachs and black rock she was far removed from her middle class upbringing. Quote, because the life ive lived and the economic you know fortunes that my husband and i now enjoy. Trump represents the same rigged system that he claims hes going to change. That is the language voters heard throughout the primary. But in a speech at Deutsche Bank in 2014, clinton cast doubt on whether the system is rigged at all, saying, quote, even if it may not be 100 true, if the perception is that somehow the game is rigged, that should be a problem for all of us. Hillary clinton is for open borders. Politico fact claimed that false when Rudy Giuliani said it at the rnc and cited this sound bite that she doesnt support open borders. We need to secure our boarders. Im for it. I voted for it. I believe in it. And we also need to deal with the families, the workers who are here and made contributions and their children. But in 2013 remarks to a Brazilian Bank he advocated for just the opposite. Quote, my dream of a hemispheric Common Market with open trade and open boards. Sometime in the future with energy as green and sustainable as we could get it, powering growth and opportunity for every person in the hemisphere. And so the Clinton Campaign has refused to confirm the authenticity of the emails released on friday night by wikileaks and refusing to deny that the speech excerpts are actually authentic. Brit. So what are they actually saying . They are saying that if you heard john podesta, he said i cant go through and see what is real and fake and there is not time but when pressed on the transcripts, if you saw donna brazil, she refused to talk about them and whether they are legit. You know what that means to me, they are legit. Up dont have to say that. Karl rove and joe trippy are back to talk about the leaked transcripts. Gentlemen, first to you, joe, my sense as you just heard me say to shannon, they wouldnt confirm or deny suggests these transcripts are on the up and up. Your thoughts. I think that could be true. But i think in the end, Hillary Clinton has some explaining to do and shell have to answer this im sure tonight shell get asked. But were in a situation where once again trump sort of dominating the cycle right now and his predicament, i would much rather be in hers than his right now. And so i think tonights debate is really going to be his to try to save his candidacy. This may be damaging, but i dont think it will be something that her candidacy is on the line the way his is. Karl . Sex beats money and video beats paper and the attacks on him are coming from a video about sex. And the attacks on her are coming from paper about money. So hes in a worse shape than she is. But he has to use this as the way to go back on the offense. It strikes me. Because it gives him a chance to go at a weakness. If there is one thing we think about Hillary Clinton, it is that she will say and do anything in order to get elected and another thing we believe about her is that she will necessarily curry favor with the people that she thinks could bring them power and advantage. And so these things are i think the colloquy between you and shannon about what these things are, they refuse to say and refuse it doesnt take anything. All they have to do is pass out the transcripts and well make the decisions as to whether or not they are accurate or not. But agree, they are accurate. And so this is something that he could use to go on offense. It is a heck of a lot better than trying to relitigate bill clintons manifold sins and the people up for grabs, this is her weakness. This is one of the two or three principle weaknesses and she is untrusty and dishonest and this goes to prove it. And let me have another question here. Shes had some difficulty with Younger Voters and those that supported Bernie Sanders and im sure the concern is particularly with young voters that they wont turn out to vote for her. Doesnt this problem as it relates something to the border question where she has stayed one position and now we are talking about how shes dreaming that she she dreams of a time of open borders and this cozy relationship with wall street, dont those combine to reinforce the doubt to the point that it could affect turnout well i dont think the specifics of open boards and trade affect young people as much as she tells us one thing and does another but the wall street thing does go to the sanders and millennial voters are concerned about. Joe, go ahead. And the key is does trump have the discipline to make this case. And so i agree with what karl said tonight. He those be contrite and show humility and take to these kind of issues and the divide and the contrast between him and her on these issues. In the past but if hes coming in here loaded for bear to go after bill clinton, well see what happens, but if that is where he is going, there is no way hell come out of this debate with any chance to resurrect his candidacy. Brit, one more quick thing. Shes got to go to something new. She has to be prepared with a response to all of these items that came up. She may not be prepared if he comes at her on another issue with the same problem of saying and doing Different Things at different times. Karl and joe, thanks. Well come back to you later. Stay with us, please. And here to respond are Scott Jennings who did political analysis for the george w. Bush white house and the columnist george will. George, your thoughts on the leaked emails and what they mean. I think karl is largely right, it is very hard to get peoples attention in a fire storm that weve had for the last two or three days on something when you read the transcript, it looks like pandering to the people who are paying her lavish fees. It is not attractive or dynamite. Scott . Yeah, i think she has a problem because it is a topic that allows trump to get back to the one area in this campaign where hes been scoring points and that is on economy, trade, job creation, nobody believes that Hillary Clinton knows how to create jobs in the private sector and the main rational is just that and if he could get on that topic and the issue set for more time than in the first debate, we could have a good debate tonight. What about the statements he he made about how you deal with the controversy and so on you have to have a public and a private position. Is that simply more of what we already knew about her, george, or does this take it to another level. This is a kinsley gaf, who said that a gaff is when a politician said something true but in politics, you do some things and you do things in the background when you are negotiating, cutting deals and splitting differences and making sausage and i dont think this is startling but it is again not something that the public likes to hear. So, scott, if you are donald trump, it has been suggested by the earlier panelists that you could take advantage of this and how do you picture him doing that. I think he has to get the outrage of the day off the table right out of the gate. He has to get ready for her attacks on the New York Times income tax story because i think where hillary is going to try to defend herself on the economy and on the documents is to point out the income tax issue and maybe he is not the great business man that he says he is. He has to be able to perry those attacks and move back in offense and not allow himself to be distracted and spends all night on defense and flustered about what she is likely to say about him and that is a huge problem and he cant control any flow in this debate. That seems to suggest, scott, is that he is going to need some selfdiscipline. George, do you think he could muster the selfdiscipline to avoid walking into traps and at the same time turning things to the things he wants to talk about. Just the contrition is not part of his repertoire and neither is discipline. He is a counter puncher and an attacker. He also is in a terrible position now. Because 20 years ago, in 1996, at exactly this point in the campaign, it became clear to republicans that bob dole is not going to defeat president clinton. The entire republican apparatus shifted and the argument became elect senator so and so, the republican, congressman, so and so, the republican, as a check on the Clinton Presidency. And i think you will see that now. People are going to assume that the Clinton Presidency is going to happen. There is talk, scott, that Party Resources will be turned away from supporting trump and more than ever toward retaining control of the house and senate. Do you sense that that strategy is about to take effect . Well, i think certainly in order to hold the United States senate, we have to keep republicans, rural voters and christian voters going to the polls. One thing im worried about are rural voters, and christians dissuading they dont want the decision for president on their conscious and they dont want to choose between either and they decide to sit it out. The Republican Party has to keep those folks going to the polls. I worried about North Carolina and missouri where there are close polling f. A handful of people dont show up, it could cost the majority and it is a huge problem. George, final thoughts. The Faith Community he is referring to has been a big part of the republican constituency for years and taken seriously and courted by candidates. If the Faith Community could weather this storm of trump news the leaders are sticking with him. They are sticking with him. It is going to cause people to rethink what it it means to be in the Faith Community. Scott and george, thanks to both of you. Stay here with fox news and we await the second president ial debate. What does trump need to do . Well talkthat shortly. Stay tuned. Man dear mr. Danoff, my wife and i are now participating in your mutual fund. We invested in your fund to help us pay for a College Education for our son. Weve enclosed a picture of our son so that you can get a sense there are real people out here trusting you with their hardearned money. At fidelity, we dont just manage money, we manage peoples money. Tonights second president ial debate is less than two hours away and in the past 48 hours a number of republicans have bolted from donald trump and pulled support for his candidacy. But it is wise to abandon trump at this late hour of the campaign. Our nightly Political Panel is here. Night york, from the Washington Examiner and heidi press bella from usa today. There are fairly notable people who have walked away now from trump based on this. John mccain being one. Senator portman from ohio, the list goes on. Your thoughts about whether this is politically wise at this late stage . Well, it has to matter to the candidate if his goal is still to win. Because what i think it will do is two things. One, it will harden the support among his core supporters who are really angry and feel like he is like he does, like he is being abandoned. But it is also going to, i think, crystallize the independent support that drifted away from him over the last couple of weeks since the last debate and i think the bigger question at this point is just the absolute quandary that some of these members are in right now. You saw the politico poll this morning showing that a number of republicans are sticking by trump. So that makes the decision for what they do really difficult. Because they still need these Trump Supporters to not bail on them when they go to the polls. So i think the big quandary today is really how these members handle it themselves and whether we continue to det t see the defection. Tomorrow i
