government trap. three of those officers were killed at the scene, three others injured, one of them in critical condition and now fighting for his life. investigators saying the 29-year-old shooter was gavin long, a marine veteran from kansas city. they say he may have spent several days staking out the side of the shooting and new that police were often in the area. jon: will car live in baton rouge where he's been following the investigation. well, what's the latest? reporter: one officer in critical condition in the hospital behind me. authorities tell us he's fighting for his life after he was shot in the head yesterday morning. three other officers were shot and killed, their names are 41-year-old matthew gerald, 45-year-old brad garafola and 32-year-old montrell jackson.jackson had an emotional perspective from a black police officer in baton rouge on social media that heposted over the last week which in part stated , in uniform i did nasty, hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat. i've experienced so much in my short life and these last three days have tested me to the core. jackson became a father this year and members of law enforcement who spoke to his family at the hospital yesterday tell us that is one of the hardest things they've ever had to do. listen to governor john bell edwards. >> we simply have to do better. and we have to root out this hatred and we've got to stop targeting police officers. reporter: as for the suspect, we've learned that he was wearing body armor when he ambushed the officers yesterday morning. also members of law enforcement tell us at this point they're not ready to say that he acted alone. there have been reports that the government had links to radical groups across the country. i spoke to one high-ranking member of law enforcement, i asked him about that and he said there have been copycat have gone on social media purporting to be the shooter so right now both local and federal authorities are working together to sort out fact from fiction, john? jon: will car reporting live. melissa: america's election headquarters now at the gop convention in cleveland, tonight's theme is make america safe again . donald trump working on his speech set for later in the week but his wife melania takes center stage tonight as we learn who will be introducing her. john roberts is live in new york city helping us hold down the fort back here in new york, john? reporter: good morning to you. after the events in baton rouge and dallas a week before that, what happened in france, what happened in orlando, the trunk campaign believes law and order and the national security is going to be a dominant theme of the election and it's one they can draw sharp contrast with hillary clinton and barack obama on. look at what donald trump tweeted out yesterday after president obama gave that press conference in the wake of baton rouge. president obama at a news conference but he doesn't have a clue. our country is a divided crime scene and it will only get worse. you mentioned that the theme tonight, make america safe again, the key point in that trunk believes his immigration reform and border security and that's where his wife melania comes in. she will be talking about her experience here in america, reliable country and reiterate as he has many times before on the campaign trail that she came into this country legally. donald trump portrayed himself and his running mate might pence as the law and order candidates on 60 minutes. correspondent leslie stall duo if they are ready to take on the big problems facing the nation and the world today, here's what they said. >> where both ready. i have no doubt . they need toughness, we need strength. obama is weak, hillary is weak and part of it is that, a big part of it. we need law and order, we need strong borders. >> one of the reasons why i said yes in a heartbeat to run with this man is because he embodies american strength and i know that he will provide that kind of broad shoulders american strength on the global stage as well. reporter: the trump campaign is making the point that law and order is not a topic lori clinton can talk about with credibility, particularly after she was so admonished by the fbi over her handling of top-secret emails on that private server. donald trump will be in cleveland tonight, he's going to be there for melania's address and will be introducing her to the crowd on stage this evening. melissa? melissa: thank you so much. jon: brand-new numbers in the presidential election. as new national polls of the race getting tighter. the washington post abc news poll has hillary clinton ahead with 47 percent donald trump's order three percent still puts them within the margin of error. very similar results in an nbc wall street journal poll which also gives hillary clinton the edge 46 to 41. clinton has a slightly bigger lead in the cnn orc poll where she leads trump 49 to 42 percent. joining us now, john mccormick, sing writer at the weekly standard. were getting ready to essentially coordinate donald trump the candidate at the republican national convention. but the mood of the country in light of the dallas and baton rouge attacks on police , pretty grim right now. is that the kind of thing that can sway these numbers, john? reporter: it's evidence, international event and certainly could one way or the other. all the holes you mentioned, those were taken after the dallas attack on the police officers down there to whether this might take a long time to play we don't know what hillary clinton is still ahead, a little bit closer, you will have to see if there's more of a backlash and donald trump is saying he's a law and order candidate. i think emphasized that to be the law and order candidate he needs to bring order to his own campaign. he's been very erratic, even unstable at times. his first response this morning was to criticize obama's body language that he's somehow unfriendly to the police. that was more of an irritable mental gesture than an argument. if you want to make an argument, he needs to make an argument and persuade people that he can be a unifier and a law and order candidate . jon: he's been using the phrase make america safe again. he's referring to those of us who want to go out on the street, police officers as well as ordinary citizens and feel like they are safe in their own city. >> that's been a big theme and i think it helps that he picked might pass as is running mate. mike pence is a sober minded candidate, a sober minded politician and in light ofthe other candidates , they're a little more erratic, a little more trump in their rhetoric so people are reassured that he has a steady hand behind him, someone who has served in congress and held executive office. jon: we had these numbers at the start of this segment. hillary clinton leading in the polls. every candidate usually gets something obama out of his or her convention. when they are back to back the way they are, i would expect trump's numbers to elevate this week, maybe hillary clinton's elevated next week but in terms of the horse race, is really insurmountable? >> certainly not. look at the real clear politics average, all people together, hillary clinton is about three points. mitt romney lost by three points and if she holds out at the election it's a blowout in the electoral college but it's not unthinkable especially if events keep going the way they are. things could change and i think that three-point lead is easily overtaken. right nowshe's in the lead , the 538 prognosticators give hillary clinton a two to one advantage. for trump to have a one in three shots, that's not hitting the powerball, more like winning a dollar or two office out ticket so it's not inconceivable she could pull this off. jon: she is tied to the obama administration. many suggest, many republicans are suggesting that essentially hillary clinton would be our third obama term. when the right track, wrong track numbers are so widely spread, something like three quarters of americans think the country is on the wrong track, is she going to have a tough sell trying to come up with what some suggest would be a third obama term? >> i think so. that's her biggest liability, those right track wrong track numbers would indicate that would be a huge advantage for republicans but the president's job approval rating is improved greatly over the last few months as trump has locked up the nomination, that's because a lot of swing voters see obama as preferable to trump. these attacks on law enforcement could provide an opportunity, i think there's a to be made that some elected officials have perpetuated this lie that these attacks on innocent black men are more common than they are, there certainly is a real problem, think of walters scott in carolina, garner in new york but the idea this is happening on a day-to-day basis is untrue and i think the media and politicians need to put that in perspective and be honest and accurate about what's going on. jon: but from your point of view, you think donald trump is not responding in a presidential way? >> not so far. i think he has an opportunity to do that tonight in front of all the cameras but the art this morning was that he didn't like obama's body language. that's just not an argument. if you want to saythat obama , his response to the ferguson shooting was completely inappropriate, i think there's some merit to that. the whole idea of hands up, don't shoot, and i was alive. this was based on live. we know the gentlemanin question was killed , he did not have his hands up. he grabbed the officers gone and ran for the officer but there are cases that innocent black men have been killed. walter scott, he was running away and got shot in the back. there's never an excuse for violence but i think a real candidate who wants to unite the country would be able to talk about this in a measured way, condemning violence, standing with the police and talking about the problems that exist but putting them in proper context you want we will see how the voters size up donald trump and mike pence against lori clinton and whoever running mate turns out to be.john mccormick from the weekly standard, thank you. melissa: police releasing new information about the man who shot six officers in baton rouge, three of them. what we are learning about data and lawns pass plus, how donald trump and mike pence the indiana governor will be his running mate. trump and facing questions about issues they have approached differently in the past like the iraq war and negative campaigning. >> this is a big man who's been talking about issues the american people care about. >> but name-calling? >> in the essay i wrote a long time ago i said campaigns to be about something more important than one candidate selection and this campaign and donald trump's candidacy has been about the issues the american people care about. >> but what about the negative side? he's apologized for being a negative campaigner. >> i understand that. i'll give you an example. lori clinton is a liar. hillary clinton, that was proven last week. hillary clinton is a crook. >> that's negative. >> i called her crooked hillary. jon: joining us now with their evaluation of the media reaction to all of this from cleveland, alan combs, close to the alan combs show syndicated by fox news radio in new york, and bruce, radio talkshow host and fox news contributor. first of all, you having fun in cleveland rather conservatives? >> i had a lovely good metal detection as i walked in, good security. the big l for liberal went off but i'm safe. jon: so let's talk about what we saw last night, melissa and i were talking about it on the set a moment ago during the commercial break and she said watching twitter, it was like there were two different americas watching this interview, some people loved it, some people hated it. kenny, let's start with you, what did you think about trump and mike pence on tv for the first time. >> trump, it's to. he's a man who's taking care of things on his own for some time. he's chosen a man who has disagreed with him in the past. i think that's fabulous, it means he's serious about mister mike pence, this is what the left have to worry about. even if they had walked on water, the left would have complained so the fact that they are unhappy with what's going on tells me this is good news but i think the issue is going to be when mister pence is on his own, when he's giving interviews, it's going to exposed to the american people that this edition for america's broad-based, it's not just mister trump. when you announces his this week they will see the breadth of this revolution if you will and i think that's where pence, it's a different approach but as you noted in the interview they are going in the same direction. it's the same vision with a different approach and you will see at the end of the week quite positive spin to it. jon: as she said alan, you didn't much like it . >> i don't know how the same vision of two different people as trump said, how is it that hillary does not get a pass on having voted for the iraq war but trump said that pence did. at what point did trump take his hand out of the back of my pence because it's funny, when pence spoke, trump slips the move and i thought they would. he's a great ventriloquist. they didn't seem to be on the same page at all, i didn't see any chemistry there. they stand for different things. pence is a right down the middle conservative, trump is not. trump is never a social conservative, they don't agree on many issues and i don't know how they're going to bring this together and make this work. jon: were goingto hit the pause button for a second and be back to you both . melissa: we want to take you to the white house right now where president obama is awarding the medal of honor right now, let's listen. >> we are honored to be joined not only by him by also ate of talking dance 10 children , three of their grandchildren.it's the kennels family reunion here in the white house. we are also honored to be joined by chuck's brothers in arms from vietnam. and some of chuck's newest comrades, members of the medal of honor society. may 15 1967, started as a hot monday morning. soldiers from the hundred and first airborne were battling hundreds of heavily armed north vietnamese in a rural riverbed. our men were outnumbered. they needed support fast. helicopters to get the wounded out and bring more soldiers into the fight. kettles was a kilo pilot and as he volunteered for active-duty on this morning he volunteered his two weeks even though he the danger. they called this place trump valley for a reason. above the riverbed rows of 1500 foot tall hill and the enemy was dug in toan extensive series of tunnels and bunkers . the ideal spot for an ambush. but chuck jumped into the chop cockpit and took off. around 9 am this company approached the landing zone and looked down. they should have seen a stand of greentrees . instead they saw a solid wall of green enemy tracers coming right at them. none of them had ever seen fire that intense. soldiers and the fellows were hit and killed before they could even leave off but under withering fire, chuck landed his chopper and kept their exposed so the wounded could get on and so that he could fly them back to base. a second time chuck went back into the battle. he dropped off more soldiers and supplies, picked up more wounded. once more, machine gun bullets and mortar rounds came screaming after. as he took off a second time, around peers the arm and leg of chuck's door gunner, roland shank area shook fuel was hit. fuel was pouring out as he flew away. chuck had wounded men aboard and decided to take his chances. he landed, found another helicopter and lou roland to the field hospital.by now it was near evening. back in the riverbed, 44 american soldiers were still pinned down. the air was thick with gunpowder, smells of burning metal and then they heard a faintsound and as the stock son started to set a saw something rise over the horizon . six american helicopters. as one of them said, as beautiful as could be. for a third time, chuck and his unit headed into that hell onearth . death or injury was all but certain, a fellow pilot said later and a lesser person would not return. once again, the enemy unloaded everything they had on chuck as he landed. small arms, automatic weapons, rocket propelled grenades. soldiers ran to the helicopters. when chuck was told all were accounted for he took off and then midair his radio told him something else area eight men had not made it aboard. they had been providing cover for the others. those eight soldiers had run for the choppers could only watch as they floated away. we all figured we were done for, they said. chuck came to the same conclusion. if we left them for 10 minutes, he said, they would be pows or dead. a soldier who was there said that day, major kettles became our john wayne. with all due respect to john wayne. he couldn't do what chuck kettles did. he broke off from formation, took a steep, sharp descending turned back toward the valley, this time with no aerial or artillery support, alone helicopter heading back in. chuck was the only target for the enemy to attack and they did. tracers lit up the sky once more. chuck came in so hot that his chopper bounced for several hundred feet before coming to a stop. as soon as he landed, a mortar round shattered his windshield, another hit the main rotorblade . trackable tour through the cockpit and chuck's chair. and still, those eight soldiers started to sprint to the q. week, running through the firestorm chased by bullets. chuck helicopter now badly damagedwas carrying six soldiers and was 600 pounds over limit. he felt he said like flying a 2 and a half ton truck . he couldn't hover long enough to take off. but cool customer that he is, he says he saw his shattered windshield and thought, that's pretty good air-conditioning. the cabin filled with black smoke as chuck hopkins get the hello across the ground to pick up enough speed to take off. like a jack rabbit, he said, bouncing across the riverbed. the instant he got airborne, another mortar ripped into the tail, the q. week fishtailed violently and a soldier was thrown out of the helicopter, hanging onto a skid as chuck blew them to safety. you couldn't make this up. this is like a bad rambo movie. [laughter] but listening to this, you can't believe it. so the army's warrior echoes is based on a simple principle. a soldier never leaves his comrades behind. chuck kettles honored that creed, not with a single act of heroism but over and over and over. and because of that heroism, 44 american soldiers made it out that day. 44. we are honored today to be joined by some of them. chuck's door gunner who was hit, roland shank . the last soldier chuckrescued that day, the one who figured he was done for, do we smith . and a number of soldiers and vietnam veterans who fought in that matter. gentlemen, i would ask you to either stand if you can or wave so that we can thank you for your service. [applause] now, chuck's heroism was recognized at the time by the armies second highest award for gallantry, the distinguished service cross but bill milano decided chuck deserved another. bill is a retired social worker who went to chuck's house to interview him for a veterans history project sponsored by the local rotary club and overheard the interview, a woman reminded chuck to tell bill the story i just told all of you. this is something chuck and i have in common, we do what our wives tell us to do. chuck told the story and with his trademark humility, finished it by saying it was a piece of cake area. [laughter] bill, here in the story, new it was something more and he started a five-year mission along with trucks son mike, retired navy pilot to award chuck the medal of honor. bill and mike are here as his commerce woman betty dingle who along with her legendary husband john bigelow went above and beyond to pass along to make sure that even all these years later, we could still only recognize chuck kettles's heroism as we do today so we thank them for their outstanding efforts. and that's one more reason this story is quintessentially american area looking out for one another. the belief that nobody should be left behind. this should just be a creed for our soldiers. it should be a creed for all of us. this is a country that's never finished in its mission to improve, to do better . to learn from our history. to work to form a more perfect union. and at a time when let's face it, we had a couple of tough weeks . for us to remember that goodness and decency of the american people in the way that we can all look out for each other, even when times are tough. even when the odds are against us. what a wonderful inspiration. what a great gift for us to be able to celebrate something like this. it might take time, but having failed to get our veterans who fought in vietnam the full measure of thanks and respect they had earned, we acknowledge that our failure to do so was a shame. we resolve that it will never happen again. it's going to take time but old adversaries can find peace thanks to the leadership of so many vietnam vet who had the courage to rebuild ties, i was able to go to vietnam recently and see the people as enthusiastic about america as anyplace in the world. crowds lining the streets and we were able to say that on the whole lot of issues, vietnam and the united states are not partners. here at home it might take time but we have to remember everyone on our team just like chuck kettles. sometimes we have to turn around, head back and help those who need a lift. chuck says the most gratifying part of this whole story is that dewey's name and roland's name and the name of 42 other americans he say are not etched in the solid granite wall not far from here that memorializes the following in the vietnam war. instead, it will be chuck kettles's name forever etched on the walls that communities have built from southern california to south carolina in honor of those who have earned the medal of honor. of course, chuck says all this attention is a lot of hubbub but i will survive. [laughter] chuck, you survived muchworse than this ceremony. and on behalf of the american people, let me say that this hubbub is richly and roundly deserve . as he prepares to read the citation, please join me in saluting this proud american soldier who reminds us all of the true meaning of service, lieutenant colonel chuck kettles. [applause] >>. [applause] the president of the united states of america, authorized by act of congress march 3, 1863 as awarded in the name of congress the medal of honor to you, major charles s kettles, united states army. major charles s kettles has distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry while serving as flight commander, 176 aviation country, 14, aviation battalion, american helicopter division, republic of vietnam. 115 may 1967, major kettles upon learning that an airborne infantry unit had suffered casualties during an intense firefight with the enemy, he volunteered to lead a flight of six uh on delta helicopters to carry reinforcements to the force and evacuate wounded personnel. enemy small arms, automatic weapons and mortar fire rate the landing zone, inflicting heavy damage to the helicopters. however, major kettles reviews to depart until all helicopters were loaded to capacity. he returned to the battlefield with full knowledge of the intense any fire awaiting his arrival to bring more reinforcement, landing in the midst of enemy mortar and automatic weapons fire that seriously wounded his dump gunner and damaged his aircraft. upon departing, major kettles was advised by another helicopter crew that he had fuel streaming out of his aircraft. despite the risks proposed by the leaking fuel he nursed the damaged aircraft back to base. later that day the infantry battalion commander requested immediate emergency extraction of the remaining 42 including four major members of major kettles unit that were stranded when a helicopter was destroyed by enemy fire. with only one helicopter remaining, major kettles volunteered to return a third time, leaving a flight of six evacuation helicopters, five of which were from the hundred 61st aviation company. during the extraction, major kettles was informed by the last helicopter that all personnel were on board and departed the landing zone accordingly.gunships accordingly landing zone also departed. once airborne, major kettles was advised that the troops had been unable to reach the helicopters due to intense enemy fire. with complete disregard for his own safety, major kettles past believed to another helicopter and return to rescue the remaining eight troops. without gunships, artillery or tactical air support, yet he concentrated all firepower on his loan aircraft which was immediately damaged by a mortar round that shattered both front windshields and was further raped by small arms machine gun fire. despite the attempt, major kettles maintain control of the aircraft, allowing time for the remaining eight soldiers to board the aircraft. in spite of the severe damage to his helicopter, major kettles once again guided his aircraft to safety area without his courageous actions and the superior flying skills, the last group of soldiers and his crew would never have made it off the battlefield. major kettles's selfless act of valor and determination in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect greatly upon himself and united states army. >> ... let us go forward with joyful hearts with these words. be not afraid for i have redeemed you, i have called you by name. you are mine. and you pass through waters i will be with you through rivers, you shall not be swept away. when you walk throughthe fire, you shall not be burned nor will flames consume you . he world in peace. dedicated to your service, amen. >> ladies and gentlemen, that concludes the ceremony but we have a reception. i hear the food here is pretty good. let's give one more round of applause to mister chuck kettles. given the climate here? >> it appears that mark is not able to hear us. joe, i'll prove that question at you. you're being asked to perform the impossible under the best of circumstances. now you've got these ambush style calls, 911 calls that come in and you know as a cop that if you go in there you possibly might pay with your life. our police supposed to respond these days? >> they do it the way they do it every day of their life while they're on patrol, while they're investigating crimes. they go out there and they do it because it's the inherent danger of policing but now it's compounded by radical people like that just want to take it to a whole different level. you cannot prepare yourself for the unknown you can only go in there with the training you do have and the police department are definitely going to revisit how they're going to respond to crimes but how do you respond to a crime of a man with a gun, it's just a dispute and you have somebody that's a sniper waiting to take you out? you don't know that but this is what policing is all about and until people realize that the police are there for them and these incidents of police shooting should not justify in any shape or form the action that they are taking, we're going to see this over and over again and i agree we're going to see more cops in body bags and i for one don't want to see one more and this nation should just come together. it's so disgusting that this is happening. it's beyond imagining, these families what they are going through, what baton rouge is going through right now. we went through it in new york with officer ramose, it's horrible and it's a long lasting effect and it does have a ripple effect and don't forget that the one we are agreeing that there can't be more of these. then very quickly, this service is good at preventing these kinds of, this violence against the president in part as you know what to look for. what do we as a nation look for in the person who might pull off the next ambush? >> you're right. you're going to have to see a marshall plan effort at local police intelligence, expanding intelligence and looking for the signals in the mental health community. you have to be proactive, you can't be reactive who killed the zone for attack on you're going to be walking into an ambush if you don't stop the event . jon: we have to issue our apologies to mark smith, we were unable to link up with him. back to all of you. melissa: there's a long list of speakers lined up for the republican national convention but some notable names are missing. will that affect efforts to unite the party? >> ♪ music for your retirement, you wanted to celebrate the little things, before they get too big. and that is why you invest. the best returns aren't just measured in dollars. td ameritrade. melissa: excitement building in cleveland as the republican national convention today. the lineup of speakers will include veterans and actors, politicians, members of donald trump's family as well. the list is like on establishment republicans. in fact, the last two republican presidents and the parties last two presidential nominees all choosing to stay home. joining me now is david avella, the chairman of gopac and republican strategist. we also have capri cup borrow, a democratic ohio state senator and the former minority leader of the ohio state senate. thanks to both of you for joining us. let's talk about tone and theme first before we get to who's not there. donald trump on the last convention in tampa something like the most boring thing he had ever seen. he's setting the bar very high in terms of what we call in television watch ability, that this is going to be a lot more engaging and dynamic and frankly entertaining in the past convention. is it going to be hard to live up to that, what you >> i think this is going to be a very exciting convention melissa. the reality is we could talk about all the speakers and they could all help make the case for donald trump and they could give insight into who he is as a person but look, americans are tuning in to hear one person.they're going to tune in to hear donald trump and what his vision is for america and what america will look like if he is president for four years. melissa: capri, let me ask you. they talk about it being light on establishment. house speaker paul ryan, house majority leader kevin mccarthy, senate majority leader mitch mcconnell are going to be there. the last two nominees are going to be there but trump might say they didn't win. >> well, they didn't win but here's the thing. i've been to three previous republican conventions and five previous democratic conventions over the last 20+ years. it's highly unusual not to have for example the previous sitting president for that party so for example, george w. bush being absent from this is highly unusual. however this is a highly unusual election cycle and you have the former president both hw and w bush's son and brother jeb bush really flaming out early in all of this so there's a lot of personal animosity that exists as well which is why you are seeing folks not show up like the bushes and like my governor john kasich. this is our state and he's noticeably absent from the list on establishment republicans. melissa: also highly unusual that you have a sitting government also not join the festivities. melissa: what about that? some of the biggest names in the party are not there yet they are all nursing wounds from this bruising primary at the hands of the candidate on unexpectedly so what does it say that they are not here? >> first, they better watch out, three straight republican conventions and she might change her registration and become a republican. >> don't hold it against me. [laughter] >> it goes back to look, this convention is about nominating our presidential nominee and vice presidential nominee and americans want to hear what donald trump has to say and here's the reality: love or hate him, when donald trump is on tv, people watch. so thursday's will be the highest rated presidential nominee speech in history. melissa: we will see his theme of the day, make america safe again. it certainly seems appropriate after the horrific weekend we've had. thanks to both of you, we will be right back. >> i'm only in my 60's. i've got a nice long life ahead. big plans. so when i found out medicare doesn't pay all my medical expenses, i looked at my options. then i got a medicare supplement insurance plan.
