FOXNEWSW Happening Now August 29, 2014

Of the news reports suggests that folks are getting a little further ahead of where were at than we currently are. And i think thats not just my assessment but the assessment of our military as well. Heather conor powell live in jerusalem with the latest. Hi, there, conor. Reporter heather isiss brutality once again on display in both iraq and syria. Two new videos coming out by that militant group shows how far they are willing to go to establish their islamic caliphate across the middle east. In the first video isis appears to execute 200 or so Syrian Government troops. It shows the proassad troops marched through the desert with their hand up and killed. The soldiers were reportedly captured after militants seized control of a syria airbase near the city of topka. The second city posted by isis, shows a captured kurdish fighter, beheaded in the video ear ellie similar to the death of american journalist james foleys video. These militants say this video is a warning to the kurds to end their military cooperation with the United States. Now as the white house debates expanding the u. S. Military mission in iraq in syria, the isis is losing some ground in iraq. Us air strikes provided iraqi army and Kurdish Militia some space to launch pretty significant counter attacks of isis. Isis has put out of some of the territory it gained but holding on to a large swath of iraq and syria. They continue to hold several key Oil Producing towns. Most frightening, heather, they are gaining new recruits by the day. And most of the sort of general consensus seems to be, heather, that us air strikes and Iraqi Military and Kurdish Militias are not going to be enough to defeat this isis militant group in both iraq and syria. Much more is going to have to be done. Heather conor, thanks so much. Well talk to you again later on. Really had little substance of the president said basically i dont have a strategy to deal with isis in syria. We really are, im really nowhere different or further on isil in iraq, nor am i going to give you a definitive update on things. This was appalling display of lack of leadership on the part of the United States through our commanderinchief and chief executive. Jon karl rove speaking earlier this morning, blasting president obamas handling of the isis threat and for saying he doesnt yet have a strategy to stop the terrorists trying to take over syria. As the white house plunges further into damage control mode, what is the administrations larger, Counter Terror strategy Going Forward . Senior editor of the the daily caller is with us. Lynn sweet, Washington Bureau chief for the chicago suntimes. I imagine, lynn, if the president could take that back one at the same time, we dont have a strategy yet, we would do so. The white house is in full damage control mode. Theyre trying to suggest he was saying we dont have a lives targets in syria that we want to strike to present to congress. What is the effect of that remark . Okay, it is damage. I agree with you. If he could take it back he would. Impossible, what is the problem though is not, he did say it, im not going to argue with you. Im agreeing that was a error and how he said it but if you, the rest of the press conference, i dont know actually why he had it. If he had nothing to announce. You could have written the story. You could have broadcast there is no strategy without him saying it. He told us that he is sending secretary kerry to the region to find if he can put together an International Coalition to work with the United States. He told us that defense secretary chuck hagel needs to give him more options. So you had evidence of a lack of strategy even without him saying though it made it harder for him to go forward and execute whatever strategy comes out because he says it. And certainly as he also said, he now will have, he will have to have congress weighing in. So, bottom line is, im not quite sure why he went out there yesterday. Jon jamie, you know, the white house seems to have been caught by surprise over the, you know, development of isis. The president , famously back in january, was comparing them to a jv team trying to pretend they were the l. A. Lakers yet west points counterterrorism this week came out with a study that isis has been information for four years. And you get the sense that when the president gave his press conference yesterday he was unaware that the world is watching him. It wasnt just the line that everyone is talking about, that we have no strategy. There were other elements in there that were just astonishing. He mentioned that were in iraq to protect our personnel. Well do other operations if they have limited risk. This is a far cry from what secretary of state john kerry tweeted last week, that isil will be defeated, will be destroyed. It is a far cry from the type of threat you would imagine, the type of response you would imagine to a threat that secretary hagel said was beyond anything weve ever seen. Obama clearly gave the message to the world, that the United States isnt looking to engage in threat headon. He is very reluctant to do so. If youre a dictate or or terrorist group watching this, you have to get the impression that there is a green light to do further actions to destablize either your region, conquer more territory or plan attacks against the United States because you saw the president , very, very reluctant, without a strategy to go attack. In this case, isis but i think the broader world from the caucuses to what were seeing with Vladmir Putin in Eastern Europe and beyond. Jon is that part of the problem, lynn . He was elected promising to the end the war in iraq. Now that the war, the war iraq is over, the official, you know, u. S. Component of it, is he just too reluctant to two back in there with any kind of military force . Yes. We know that prior weeks we have, what, several hundred military advisors there and we could debate how many is too many. So hes lets look at this one chapter here. The problem is is there is not an answer to this asymmetric threat. I think today, the administration imposed more sanctions on iran. You could try to punish russia economically. When youre dealing with isis or isil, youre not dealing with a nation. You cant have a boycott. You cant sanction them. You cant go to the United Nations and ask for them to be, you know, held up to the world. This is why dealing with iran and another trouble spot by the way weve been grappling with, sir, we havent been able to, what, werent we here a few years ago talking about the red line there . So i dont think has a direct relationship to the president ial pledge to iraq. I think it is a situation that has grown since then, and isnt so much about the pledge when you try to interpret what the administration is doing or not doing here. Jon yeah, jamie, she brings up the red line. It was just about a year ago this week that the president mentioned that red line in syria that shouldnt be crossed and then Nothing Happened when the line was crossed. I mean, is this followon from that . Policies have consequences. I think what were seeing the president obamas foreign policy. You cant cut the Defense Budget and signal to the world were going to retreat from the world. You can give these press conferences that show that youre not that serious about responding. As you mentioned in syria you can set red lines and not enforce them. That sends a message to the world. There are consequences to the actions. It sends a message to bad actors around the world this is an administration who is not seeking a confrontation with them. It sends a message to our friend, were to the really there to back you up. So this is not out of the blue. These are the direct consequences of policy actions that the president obama set in motion the day he set into office wanting to retreat from the world. What were seeing right now what happens when you set that policy in motion. I must say i think you went a big too far when you say retreat from the world. That hasnt been the case. We have been multiple unified missions and provided assistance in airstrikes. Libya, other places. So without going that far this is bad enough. Bear with me. This is terrible situation. I think without making it worse. People are dying, beheaded, barbaric situation but, you mentioned, what our friend know. I think it is reasonable to ask the friends of the United States, other actors in the area, for them to step up and also be more of an active participant and not just have the u. S. , cant succeed alone in this because this isnt our neighborhood. I know the president talked about it yesterday. I would put that thought out there. Jon lynn sweet, from the chicago suntimes. Daily james my weinstein from the daily caller. We have to leave it there. Thank you. Many thanks. Earlier today the secretary confirmed that the joint terrorism al sis center increased the threat level in the United Kingdom from substantial to severe. This is the first time in three years that the threat to our country has been at this level. Heather boy, he could not have been more crisp or more clear. British Prime Minister David Cameron making that announcement just moments ago. The u. K. Has elevated its threat level from substantial to severe. He says that a radical ideology must be confronted, both at home and also abroad. Katy logan is following the story from london, and boy, is David Cameron sounding like he is doing a lot, revoking passports. Tell us about reaction to what he said. Thats right. As the Prime Minister said just then, first time in three years that the u. K. Terror threat has been raised. It is now at its second highest level, that means in practical terms that a Terror Threat is likely. Now this follows an increase in british citizens traveling to iraq and syria to join the Islamic State, some in very violent roles. People here were horrified to see a man with a british accent apparently involved in the murder of american journalist james foley. Now british Prime Minister David Cameron also says it is important to take further steps to stop these people going out to fight with the Islamic State for what he described as poisonous ideology. There is thought of about 500 gone out from the u. K. To join Islamic State. This is not some foreign conflict, thousands of miles from home that we can hope to ignore. The ambition to create an extremist caliphate in the heart of iraq and syria is a threat to our sown security here in the u. K. And that is in addition to the many other al qaedainspired terrorist groups that exist in that region. Mr. Cameron says there are already a number of measures in place but more needs to be done to deal with this growing problem of british jihadis. That may include stripping some suspects of their u. K. Passports. We can not appease this ideology. We have to confront it at home and abroad. To do this we need a tough, intelligent, patient, and comprehensive approach to defeat the terrorist threat at its source. Tough, in that we need a Firm Security response, whether that is action to go after the terrorists, International Cooperation on intelligence, and Counter Terrorism or uncompromising measures against terrorists here at home. Now the Prime Minister also said that the danger posed by the Islamic State is greater threat than ever before. Something that the u. K. Could be fighting for years or even for decades. He said he will be addressing parliament on monday to discuss further actions, but meanwhile authorities here say they will be stepping up security and policing in public areas such as airports and the they are urging people to be vigilant, heather. Kitty logan in london for us. Thank you. Speaking of policing, the nypd paying close attention to David Camerons comments coming out with a statement short while ago, theyre following developments very closely, theyre working in concert with the fbi counterterrorist unit. There is no specific threat to new york city right now but they remain poised to keep an eye on that in case anything should develop. Well keep following this for you. A volcano blows it top in new guinea. Villages are evacuated as half an inch of ash falls on the area. It caused several flights to change course. More than 200 homes evacuated as a wildfire gross in california. The happy campfire as it is called covers 50 square miles. It is only 20 contained. Officials believe it was all started by a bolt of lightning. A building tumbles into the ocean in california, a victim of big waves, some 15 feet high. The waters keeping lifeguards busy. At least 70 water rescues reported in santa monica alone. They have a handful. Heather lets talk about little bit about sports now. The National Football league is making a big change how it disciplines players involved in Domestic Violence incidents. Nfl commissioner Roger Goodell taking a much stuff tougher stance than he had before. He admitted he botch ad recent case involving a highprofile running back. Laura engle joins us with more on what the nfl is going to do now. A lot of people are talking about this, heather. Goodell issued a lengthy letter to owners outlining new domestic guidelines that sidelines players if they cross the line once and bans them completely after second offense. The policy comes after uproar what many called light disciplinary actions taken against ravens running back ray rice who goodell suspended for two games after a Domestic Violence stint in february. You probably saw this. Rice was caught on surveillance video, dragging his fiance, now his wife, out of a late Atlantic City elevator. He allegedly shrugged her before he pulled her out. This led to question our sincerity and our commitment and whether we understood the toll that Domestic Violence inflicts on some families. Under updated guidelines which went into effect immediately a first offense will result in at least a sixgame suspension without pay depending on circumstances. Second will result in banishment trot league. Players can petition for reinstatement after one year but there is no guaranty they will get it. Reaction is mixed. Many in the sports world are saying the nfl commissioner did the right thing making a mistake with the rice incident. Goodell saying i take responsibility for the decision and insuring our actions in the future properly reflect our ral us values. I didnt get it right. Simply put we have to do better and we will. Former nfl quarterback Charlie Batch tweeted out this. Kudos to the nfl and roger for taking a tougher stance against dv, Domestic Violence. Shame on any man who lays his hands on a woman. Others say good gel hasnt done enough, pointing to the nfl Substance Abuse policy, suspend players for minimum of four games on first offense and four to six games on the second and banished from the nfl for the third. A lot of people talked about this. Heather really sets the tone, doesnt it . It does. Jon good for him.
