Crime go unchecked. Good evening, im jon scott. This is a special edition of the fox report. The white house is defending the legality of the federal crackdown saying it falls within the limits of the constitution and that keeping americans safe remains President Trumps top priority. The president sending federal forces to seattle and portland where protests for Racial Justice have descended into violence. But local leaders argue the federal presence is only making things worse. The president also expanding the dojs few crimefighting effort new crimefighting effort dubbed operation legend. It started off in kansas city. Federal agents are now also heading to chicago and albuquerque. We have fox team coverage. Christina coleman is in los angeles. We begin with david spunt reporting live from the president s golf club in bridgewater, new jersey. David . Jon, good evening to you. President trump is meeting with supporters tonight at a fundraiser here in bedminster, new jersey. It is a safe bet hes talking about being the law and order candidate. Thats a pitch hes making to the person to the American People, specifically undecided voters as we have almost seen 60 nights of unrest in portland, oregon. Three federal officers may lose their sight permanently after demonstrators shined lasers in their eyes. Another federal officers hand was impaled. That officer had to be taken to the hospital. You mentioned the expansion of operation legend. This is something President Trump is working on with attorney general bill barr. The operation is named after 4yearold legend taliferro, shot and killed while sleeping in his home in kansas city last month. Police still on the hunt for his killer. Operation legend sends federal agents to hot spots around the country of unrest, specifically to protect federal property. As you mentioned, chicago, kansas city and albuquerque, but were told the program most certainly will expand. The federal government has a sworn duty to uphold the laws of the United States through field offices and federal facilities across the country. These agents protect and serve the American People. Yet the rhetoric of the left undermines our justice system, with nancy pelosi calling them stormtroopers. Wheeler using the term Paramilitary Forces. Jon, using the word Paramilitary Forces talking about todd wheeler, the mayor of portland, hes saying get out of my city. Let the local police run this operation. The District Attorney in philadelphia is actually taking it one step further. He said if any of the president s federal officers or agents come into philadelphia and act unlawfully, he will see they are arrested and charged which means, jon, a showdown between local and federal authority. Jon . Jon what a country, david spunt, in bridgewater, new jersey, thank you. Well, back the blue rallies held across the u. S. Today after more violence between protesters and federal agents in portland, oregon last night. Christina coleman is live in los angeles with that. Christina . Hi, jon. Demonstrations are being held in support of Law Enforcement officers. They have been under increased scrutiny. A back the blue rally is taking place in new york. People there protesting against defunding the police. Now, this is happening as thousands of people continue to protest against Police Brutality across the country, after the may 25th death of george floyd in minneapolis we care about our children. We care about the next generation. The next generation after that. We dont want them walking down the street fearing anything. The woman you just heard there was at a protest in portland. Last nights protest in portland started out peaceful rg but turned chaotic. This has been the case many nights in portland. Violent protesters used a chainsaw to cut into the fence at the federal courthouse downtown. Fireworks were set off. Federal agents used tear gas to clear the area. This week the fed charged 18 people for assault, arson and destroying federal property in portland. Local Democratic Leaders want federal agents to leave saying they are making the situation much worse, but President Trump and the heads of federal Law Enforcement agencies say the feds need to be there because local authorities havent stopped the violence. Heres what republican kentucky congressman has to say about this. We have to have law and order. Im all about the 1st amendment. Im all about the Peaceful Assembly of people to protest. But when those protesters start vandalizing and destroying private property, then they become criminals, and they have to be treated as such, i applaud the president for sending in federal troops. And this afternoon, seattles police chief released a statement saying Seattle Police will be carrying pepper spray today. Last night a federal judge blocked seattles new law that would have prohibited Seattle Police from using these nonlethal weapons during the protests. Jon . Jon Christina Coleman in los angeles, christina, thank you. Its been nearly two straight months of nightly unrest in portland, oregon. Local leaders there saying it got worse when federal Tactical Units moved in. Joining me now former federal prosecutor doug burns. Doug, the president s critics say he is going beyond what the constitution allows by dispatching federal forces. The president , the white house, the administration say his primary job is to keep americans safe. Who has the better argument here . Well the problem, jon, before i answer your question is that, you know, this is way more political than it is legal, and thats extremely unfortunate, because in a situation like this, you would hope that political leaders would come together in some type of unified fashion to address it. Now, to answer your question, jon, the start of the argument that indicates that the president has the authority to take corrective measures when he and his administration feel that the situation warrants it. It is an emergency. Theres violence. Theres criminal activity. The president is legally entitled and indeed obligated to take measures. You know, we have been over this, he can use the national guard, even the military and can send in federal agents. On this narrative, jon, i think it is important about how, you know, we dont want these federal agents here. I mean that is a hypocritical argument and heres why. Federal Law Enforcement works every day, thousands of cases, with local and state Law Enforcement. Ive been in many many cases for three decades with joint task forces, fbi, Drug Enforcement administration, so this is unfortunately you know, its deteriorated into a strange political narrative, jon . Jon yeah, and you know, we just heard about the District Attorney in philadelphia threatening to arrest federal agents if they well, the characterization is if they break the law in his city. Anybody who breaks the law can be arrested federal agent or not, but the implication is if they show up there, they are going to get arrested. What do you think of that idea, . It is so interesting the way you ask that, jon. When i was listening to the semantic formulation, thats what we lawyers do, we work with words, they said, you know, were going to arrest any federal agents who engage in unlawful activity. To break this down, quickly, for everybody, obviously the mere presence of federal agents at the behest of the president of the United States, the notion they would be summit to arrest is laughable that they would be subject to arrest is laughable, obviously. If they break the law, thats a different discussion. But it is wild intense political characterizations and semantics and it is extremely unfortunate for somebody like me who has been in Law Enforcement myself for nine years. Im an officer of the courts, etc. It is very difficult to watch these intense political characterizations. Jon operation legend underway in cities like kansas city, seattle, portland, doug burns, thank you. My pleasure, jon. Jon coronavirus cases still on the rise in the u. S. Johns Hopkins University reporting more than 4. 1 million total u. S. Infections and more than 146,000 deaths. Heres a look at all of the states seeing cases increase by 20 or more this week. Jacqui heinrich is live in new york city with a look at that. Jacqui . Jon, yesterday, more than 73,000 new cases were added across the country. Thats the second highest daily total since the pandemic began. While some states like arizona, texas and florida are seeing their case numbers come down, spikes are happening in other states. White house Coronavirus Response coordinator dr. Deborah birx warned this week 11 cities need to take aggressive action now to avoid becoming the next hot spot, saying baltimore, cleveland, columbus, indianapolis, las vegas, miami, minneapolis, nashville, new orleans, pittsburgh and st. Louis are not doing enough to combat outbreaks. She also warned while sun belt states are seeing decreases, the virus will start moving north. Meantime, some of the hardesthit counties are also still seeing crisis level hospitalization rates. In starr county, texas, an ethics panel which some are equating to a death panel has been established to determine which patients will respond best to treatment and therein which others will die, all due to a strain on resources. The warnings come as new cdc study indicates even with people mild cases may not get better quickly. 35 of people who had coronavirus and were able to selftreat at home were still sick two to three weeks after testing, and for young people, ages 18 to 34, with no Underlying Health issues, the number with lasting symptoms was 20 . But some promising news out of california. Uc san diego is now recruiting up to 30,000 participants for a vaccine trial, phase three beginning in just two days. That trial will be testing the vaccine prototype being developed by moderna, and the goal is to have a vaccine out, jon, by the end of the year. Jon . Jon that would be terrific news. Jacqui heinrich in new york city, thank you. A beloved Television Icon since the 60s, Regis Philbin died last night of natural causes. Many just called him regis.
