FOXNEWSW Fox News Night With Shannon Bream May 24, 2018

Im Shannon Bream in washington. Despite the democrats are getting involved in highlevel intelligence briefings. You are going to hear from house intel member peter king in a moment as well as Mollie Hemingway and buck sexton on what it all means for the search for answers as to how the fbi and the dmg have handled the Russian Investigation. First, chief National Correspondent ed henry live with the breaking details and a very heated phone call. You are right. This was supposed to be devin nunes, trey gowdy going behind closed doors at noon eastern tomorrow. All of that has changed now under pressure from democrats would Justice Departments thing there will be a second meeting with democratic and Republican Leaders about 2 00 p. M. Eastern. I got off the phone with devin nunes. Hes fired up. He believes the Justice Departments playing around with these different meanings to try to may be make it like there was daylight between nunes and some of his colleagues. Maybe different information would be discussed. He told me the last minute change by the Justice Department was weak and pathetic. He said you can quote me on that. He added i will be there at 2 00 p. M. To watch what they say to make sure it is the same intel, same interpretation of the facts of whether or not they were spying on President Trumps campaign. He wants to find that once and for all. He added this is why americans no longer trust these guys, meaning at the Justice Department, see you at 2 00 p. M. At noon, newness and trey gowdy meeting with the fbi director chris wray, Deputy Attorney general rod rosenstein. Other top officials dig deep on whether there was one or more informant trying to penetrate the trump campaign. At 2 00 p. M. , the gang of eight, four democrats and four republicans will go behind closed doors for a similar briefing. Amid signs of the pressure from the president in recent days succeeding in turning the tables on obama officials because also knew tonight, james clapper, former director of National Intelligence telling pbs that the intent was not to spy on the trump campaign. But to figure out what the russians were doing. A mile apart from march of 2017 when the president charged that obama officials had conducted surveillance. Clapper falsely claimed it was not true at all. There is no surveillance. Now he is saying the intent was not to spy, leaving the door opened all kinds of things. All of this leading the president to call clapper a lying machine and he added today was a good thing for the country that if our james comey because of what he called the former fbi chiefs lies. Comey pushed back. He, like clapper, seemed to shift his story. Comey acknowledging some kind of surveillance occurred but treating facts matter. The fbis use of confidential human sources is tightly regulated and essential to protecting the country. Attacks on the fbi and lying about its work will do lasting damage to our country. How will republicans explain this to their grandchildren . It seems like a lot of pressure here. The president said he wants the truth. Listen. President trump we now call it spygate. You are calling it spygate. A lot of bad things have happened. I want them all to get together. They will sit in the room. Hopefully they will be able to work it out. We are not undercutting. Were cleaning everything up. What i want is i want total transparency. No one should trust anything they say coming out of that meeting. I dont care who comes. Im not in control of the invite list. The only thing i would ask is that if youre going to show up, show up with an open mind and closed lips. Closed lips, seems like its a stretch that there will be closed lips and no leaks. Open minds, may be an even steeper climb. Shannon just to recap, but because not long ago we got this information. The intel briefing that they are pushing for information about the source who was reporting back to the fbi. In response to a subpoena from devin nunes. Thats part of the reason why he is fired up. This is a meeting he is supposed to have with speed 24 and Justice Department and fbi officials. Its a subpoena that nunes pushed. Shannon that meeting is happening at 12 00. Then we have a list happening at 2 00. The same players, including the gang of eight. Including nunes. Shannon he is not on the list at the second meeting. That is key. Its interesting to the because literally i didnt see that list because i was on the phone with nunes as it was being put out. Thats part of the reason why hes angry. You are right. Somehow the Justice Department and fbi seems to think that if the second meeting, nunes will not attend. Shannon he is planning on going. Hes planning on going. He said i will see you at 2 00 p. M. Because hes a member of the gang of eight. Hes the chairman of the house intel, gang of eight, insider washington term. Top republican, top democrat on the house intel and senate intel. Bottom line is seems like they were trying to say nunes is going to get one meeting and then we will tell the other leaders in congress maybe Something Else. I dont know if nunes is going up to barge in. Shannon shannon maybe tt spell out his name because he is in the gang of eight. Hes planning to go to both. Thank you. Senate judiciary chairman Chuck Grassley challenging the doj over extensive redactions made in files showing Text Messages between fbi officials peter strzok and lisa page who appeared to have a strong bias against the president. Grassley pointing to one text suggesting that former president Barack Obamas white house is running this. But we have no idea knowing what that text was referring to. In a letter sent wednesday to Deputy Attorney general rod rosenstein, grassley called for all the reductions in the strzokspeed 25 texts to be removed by june. Rosenstein will be in tomorrows briefings. Questions about the Deputy Attorney generals future tonight. Been at times at odds with the president and some house conservatives say they want him impeached. Garrett tenney has details of rosensteins status at the doj tonight. Do you have confidence in iran rosenstein . What your next question . A day after refusing to say he has confidence in Deputy Attorney general rod rosenstein, President Trump a again skirted questions. No, no, we are not undercutting. Were cleaning everything up. What i want from rod, from the fbi, from everybody, we want transparency. For the past year, rosenstein has been a frequent target of president rons frustrations with the Justice Department and special counsel Robert Muellers investigation. Rosenstein oversees it. Congressional republicans of also piled on the deputy ag, threatening him with impeachment last month for allegedly stonewalling their requests for documents related to the fbis probe of the trump campaign. Today rosenstein may have been referring to his Current Situation when he made this joke that a Leadership Forum in new york. The dictionary defines piling on as joining other people and criticizing someone, usually in an unfair manner. I also have experience with tha that. A few hours later, rosenstein found himself a few seats down from the president at a roundtable discussing gang violence. Despite rising tensions between the white house and doj, it was a fairly cordial interaction with the president even thanking the deputy ag for his remarks. We are hopeful, mr. President , we can get some assistance from congress enclosing some loopholes so that our Law Enforcement officers wont have to work so hard. Thats great, rod. I think its happening. We need the laws enhanced substantially and quickly. Thank you, rod, very much. Despite the pleasantries, former white house chief strategist steve bannon suggesting that rosensteins days are numbered. I think it is not clear how much credence we should give to Steve Bannons statements. Had a very public falling out with the president after criticizing the trump children in the book fire and fury. Wall street journal reports the two men are on speaking terms. Shannon garrett tenney, thank you. Our next two guests have been a examining the alleged deep state and whats going on. Fox news contributor and Senior Editor of the federalist, Mollie Hemingway. Former nypd intel division, former cia analyst, buck sexton. Talking about these meetings that are going to happen, the intel meetings, that are the result of the subpoena from devin nunes and again just to clarify, we have this list of the two meetings. Devin nunes his name is in the first one, not on the second one but the gang of eight is in the second one. Sounds like he was invited to both these meanings. People can quibble about whether or not name was included. But it sound like you will be about. Buck, do you think happens . To go i think therell be some progress but lets understand the department of justice is still going to be deciding with the fbi what is presented at the meeting. I think there will be a lot of Unanswered Questions afterwards. One of the big problems that the doj, fbi have to deal with is that they havent shown a lot of good faith in the process up to this point. There is been slow rolling, stonewalling, trying to do Everything Possible to avoid giving information that quite frankly at this point should have been released way in advance of the point where devin nunes is having to throw a fit and say what the heck is going on here. Thats a big problem. I think they also need a better understanding or the need to be clear on what the responses to these buying that weve heard about. It cant be that spying may be happened. Maybe it was a good thing. Maybe it shouldve been more indepth than it was. We need here actually from the department of justice at some point what was going on here not all these different pretend explanations which is what we have gone so far. Shannon there was a meeting at the white house on monday with the fbi director, with rosenstein and other leaders. Theres been some pushback. You wrote an interesting piece the people saying the president shouldnt have access to this information may not understand how the executive branch works and how the doj works. We have eric holder, former attorney journals reading more doj norms thing eroded. Trump is subject of the investigation of a once access to material related to the inquiry. His congressional supporters want evidence connected to an ongoing investigation. Time for doj, fbi to simply say no. Protecting institutions and timetested norms. Oh, my god. They need to understand the department of justice exists under the executive branch. They are accountable to the president. They are accountable to congress and when congress has for information, visit they must turn it over. They had been stonewalling obstructing, and doing so many things from a lack of transparency in general about something that should have had quite a bit of congressional oversight getgo. Shannon he is not the only one objecting. Chuck schumer, Senate Minority leader, saying for the president of the u. S. To pressure the Justice Department to reveal details and dogmas pertaining to an active investigation of the president s campaign for the purpose of denigrating it is a gross and unprecedented abuse of power. This is still not a Fourth Branch of government. Everyone can talk about how they dont like this or they dont want the information to get out there. We can also see that clearly all of a sudden oversight is a dirty word. Oversight is now authoritarian. All of a sudden from these democrats making these claims and also where is the responsibility and where is the responsiveness on the part of the doj to actually do what it supposed to do witches respond to executive and congressional its not just the executive branch. Theyve been refusing congressional action on this as well. Its as though there are people in the department of justice who think they get to read the rules as they go along. Doj wasnt created until 1870. Its not like this is the foundation of the republic. You have a lot of people running around acting like this is medicos. Did they have the right, when push comes to shove, to tell th. They actually dont have the right. They can say sorry we are not showing you this. They work for him. Its very straightforward. Shannon do think its helpful there will be democrats in the second meeting tomorrow so that they are seeing the same intel of the same time as other Republican Leaders . We dont know whats going to be sure to so its hard to say whether its a good idea or a bad idea. What we do know is that there have been a subpoena issued and the need to respond. Whether they are doing other things, whether they are suddenly deciding to be transparent in some way, thats fine. I think people have a great deal of reason to be skeptical because of how much the Justice Department has been playing games whether its with how they are redacting documents we dont actually know is going on. How they are misleading people about the nature of an investigation. How they have we have for a year people claiming it was ludicrous to think that maybe the department of justice was spying on trump campaign. Now were being told yeah, they spied. For their own good. It was totally okay. You dont need to ask any questions. Its unprecedented. I hope its unprecedented. We have so much we need to know as americans. If they were doing nothing wrong, which is their claim, then they should have no fear of people learning more about it and learning about the process and procedures they use. At the very least, they need to respond to the congressional subpoena and thats the norm that being broken. Thats the constitutional norm thats been broken thats most dangerous. Shannon the Inspector Generals report, we know a draft is circulating, thats what we believe. We know thats coming maybe he will answer some of these questions that are very pressing. He will also kick open some old wounds. The more information, turns out it doesnt look good for the doj. Shannon thank you both. Great to have your tonight. All right, house intel peter king is good to be with us in just a moment with reaction but first new tonight President Trump looking into using National Security laws to impose new tariffs on automobile imports. In favor of u. S. Autoworkers and possibly against china . New diplomatic tensions with beijing. Good evening. Secretary of state mike pompeo says another u. S. S. Mission in benghazi. Congressman gregory meeks, democrat from new york and the question why pompeo failed to discuss Diplomatic Security his confirmation hearing. I take security very serious. Never make an accusation. If i can just explain. Okay. We will give you time but we want to give the secretary a chance to respond. He did not do that with secretary clinton. The secretary says Diplomatic Security is not just about dollars extended. Shannon rich edson, thank you very much.
