Ainsley i thought it was very practical, what you were saying last night, i thought you did a good job with that because we all knew that kid in school when you were running for student body president , they promised to put snack machines in all the classes. You know thats not going to happen, but the kids vote for that person. I felt like that was your moment last night, even though the crowd really applauded Elizabeth Warren when she went back at you for saying youre promising a lot, youre not going to be able to deliver. I dont understand why anybody goes to all the trouble of running for president of the United States just to talk about what we really cant do and shouldnt fight for. I dont understand why people run and promise stuff that never happens . Well, thats the response when someone really cant defend their plans. So, for example, if john f. Kennedy when he said we should go to moon by the end of the decade in the 60s, someone could have said to him, well, youre not saying we should go next month, so youre not being ambitious enough, right . So its a dishonest, kind of lazy response. Its similar to when they say it to republican talking points, you know . Thats the problem with the extreme left of the party. When you point out obvious flaws in the things theyre talking about, they say, well, thats a republican talking point. And im like, no, its actually a fact that you should be able to defend. And i think the same thing with Elizabeth Warren. When i point out that the things shes proposing are fairy tale economics, she says, oh, youre not being ambitious enough. If you actually look at the things im proposing, which is to actually create universal health care where every american has health care as a basic right, but we allow people to have choices, that doesnt sound like a plan thats not ambitious, that actually sounds like a plan that ill have to work incredibly hard and use every ounce of Political Capital to potentially get done. And so i think its just kind of lazy and a dishonest response to people who dont feel comfortable defending these kind of crazy proposals. Brian was it frustrating to just hear the questions and the moderator just went on . Yeah. What i wanted to say was what i just said to you which is, you know, why dont you defend your proposal as opposed to saying something thats lazy and dishonest, but the moderators had already moved on. You know, it was the same point i had on a lot of different issues. I talked about trade last night. Elizabeth warren just came out with a trade proposal that would prohibit us from entering into a trade agreement with the United Kingdom of the e. U. , you know, and thats isolationism, right . And i embrace rulesbased trade. I actually think in many ways her trade policy is much closer to president s than the kind of trade policy i want to put in place. Steve the number one issue, according to gallup, for the American Public is immigration. Of course, people have different opinions about immigration, but one of the questions that i dont believe was asked of you is do you favor Free Health Care for people who are in this country illegally . No. I would like to get health care for every american. Thats what im actually focused on. You know, if people are undocumented, theyre in our country, they do have access to emergency room under current law, and they can, of course, buy private Health Insurance. But, no, i think we ought to focus on Getting Health Care to American People first. Theres a huge amount of work to do there, actually. Brian hey, john, if you dont double the amount of donors and get at least 2 in polling, youre not going to be on the stage in september. You not there yet. If you dont get on the stage in september, is it over . No. First of all, im planning on getting on the stage in september. And its definitely not over. I mean, to me, the real test of the campaign is how you do in the iowa caucus and the New Hampshire primary, because thats when, like, real human beings actually cast their votes, and that matters. Because you had people who were moderate, to left of center, and then to you had some super left who had all sorts of plans that, you know, as john delaney told us a little while ago, fairy tale ideas. I think its going to be interesting to watch the evolution of the next couple months, because the core of the Democratic Party now is very, very left wing and almost irrationally antitrump to a point where they just want to stand around and chant and scream. Whether or not any kind of rational debate pointing out, for example, that the taking away Health Insurance from 180 Million People is not very smart, pointing out that decriminalizing crossing the border so you have no controls while also offering taxpaid health care for Illegal Immigrants is probably not very smart. You go down a series of these things, whether or not inside the Democratic Party theres a large enough base left of people who have common sense, im not sure. I just say that looking at the polling data that the gap between selfidentified democrats on the one hand and independents and republicans on the other on these kind of issues is really remarkably big. Steve well, one thing now in 2018 they accused this network and the president in particular of fabricating a crisis at the border. Now everyone agrees, but they say the president s doing it on purpose. These candidates went at it over illegal immigration. I do want to give senator sanders some credit, but i also think governor bullock was also very strong, repeating over if over how Obama Administration agreed with his same policies with the border, i thought he was a strong moderate. He took senator sanders to task all the way through. As you well know it was a great night for democrats who wanted to see whether or not the progressive wing of the party could take on those who are more centrist, more moderate and i do believe that both Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders were able to, lets just say take the heat. I was going to say, to your point it was more like the moderates were taking on the progressives where Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren were in the Center Taking it from both sides. And for people who were watching, it is like, wait a minute. That person just said theyre going to take away my health care. I thought democrats would keep my health care. That is why we have debates. That is why during a president ial primary season we should hear from all sides of the political equation, whether you are representing progressive wing or the moderate wing. The moderates want to basically build on what we achieved over the last president ial term. And the progressive believe it is time to, it is essentially expose all the fault lines in politics and bring about a new path to success. What i enjoyed most about the conversation last night we were able to have these debates about big ideas without basically brawling. It was great. By the way, im going to bring my smudge stick to the debates tonight in case some dark psychic forces try to get in our way. Steve heard about that last night. Some of those comments were interesting. People tweeted b you said they didnt talk about race enough. Some of our guests said they slammed the president as much as they thought they would. In these kinds of things. I talk to people who prep folks who will be on the debate stage, stick to your talking points, even asked a question, go back to the talking points, those are the winning topics. I thought last night it was really moderators were in control over what the top ibbs were, most of them didnt deviate questions. Did you feel that way . I did. They are my former colleagues, i have enormous respect for them. Here is a question. You have got 15 seconds. Just as they were chewing, all of sudden they say 12. It is tough in that kind of environment to really get the substance out over the superficial. By and large, again, this is a debate about ideas, about future of the country. We dont necessarily have to talk about the president of the United States. What they need to talk aabout is their own vision, where they want to take the country beyond the president s years in office. Brian Bernie Sanders spoke most of the time, more than anyone else along with Elizabeth Warren. Here is immigration, how he plans on dealing with health care. Senator sanders, you wanted to provide undocumented immigrants Free Health Care and free college. Why wont this drive even more people to come to the u. S. Illegally . This will have a Strong Border protections. But the main point i want to make, is that what trump is doing through his racism and his xenophobia is demonizing a group of people. And as president i will end that demonization. If a mother and a child walk thousands of miles on a dangerous path in my view, they are not criminals. [applause] so what we will do, the first week we are in the white house, is bring the enhemisphere together to talk about how we rebuild honduras, guatemala and el salvador so people do not have to flee their own country. Brian does that sound like a policy america could get behind, if you walk along way you get in, well secure the border but well not build a wall . Is any clearthinking think that is a practical solution. The Trump Administration now as we speak is trying to work directly with the three countries so we can stop people fleeing violence and poverty and other issues down in central america. So i, i think what senator sanders is saying he is going to lower the rhetoric on those who are fleeing those circumstance, and try to have a Strong Border policy but as well have a humanitarian policy to deal with those brian give them health care. Contingencies are all over the middle east. Because there is a threat there. We can have a debate how to best overcome the threat, best monitor it, best keep it off our shores. To simply stand up to say well pull all troops out of afghanistan, three predecessors agreed with you when they were on the stage. If you dont take time to understand why they dont agree with i now they become president. Your promise to pull them out is empty. Anytime a candidate says something along the terms i will probably do this, or im going to do that, it is just an empty promise. It is not based on fact. It is based on trying to achieve votes. I didnt like it when republicans talked about it in 2016. I dont like it in 2020 when democrats do it for no other reason than to win votes. With the white house we hear there is a strategy. Afghanistan wants to do peace talks with the taliban. This is how theyre going to do it. Doesnt mean i like it necessarily, at least i understand it. Unlike the 2020 democrats who are simply trying to add something new to bring to the table for the sake of newness. What is more important to me, if youre polling at zero percent, living in the state of texas as liberal, you cant even win a senate seat there, if youre not doing well with the American People, perhaps something that isnt inherently divisive to adhere yourself to.
