And the son of Peter Lawford as well. Thats correct. How long did it take you i know you had an addiction problem for ten years. Yeah, basically 15 years. From the age of 12 to basically i got into recovery when i was 30 years old. What is your story . Well, you know, this illness has a genetic component, and it also has a trauma component. Most of the people dealing with this come from families that have it and also have trauma in their adolescence. So theyre medicating. I also have the added disadvantage of being brought up in the 60s and 70s, which was very permissive. In a very famous family. Well, yeah, but there was trauma involved in that. I witnessed the brutal assassinations of both of my uncles pretty much every day for 50 years. So ptsd is a huge problem. Vets have a huge problem with this. Its a big problem. This book, when your partner has an addiction, tells us we dont have to leave the people we love. This is the number one Public Health issue in the country. We have less and less resources to combat it. So were going to have to take this into our homes and help people that are suffering. Its hard not to leave your spouse. Youre angry at them, i imagine, if theyre addicted to something. Absolutely. So how do you this does ns an illness. But if you understand you know, dont judge the alcoholic in the street until you walk a mile in his shoes. Folks that have this illness are not doing it because theyre having a good time. Theyre doing it because theyre sick and theyre medicating the intolerableness of their lives. This book gives you ways that you can help that person and still stay. Okay. A lot of books have been written for the addict. Okay, this is going to be your guidebook to get out of this personal hell. So is this book written for the partner or the spouse on how to guide that person who is addicted . Basically how to guide the process. This is called compassionate partnering. Were not saying people should stay if theres an abusive relationship or if theyre in danger. They should leave. But if the partner, the addicted partner is willing to get better, they can do this together. And this book shows you how. What do you wish your partner had done differently, or what did she do that helped you recover . Well, my first wife actually did this with me. She was she learned about the issue. There was no shame in our house for having this. There was compassion. There was cooperation instead of judgment and condemnation. So we used a lot of these tools. Im 30 years in recovery. For the folks watching right now who might have somebody in their household who has an addiction problem, give them one thing they can do today. See your partner clearly. Understand what the aspects of this illness are. Stop shaming that person. And dont take what they do personally. Thats one of the hardest things people have to do. As you say, folks that have this illness behave badly. We need to get beyond that. Its possible to get beyond that. Hard to do, but its so sweet to love them through their illnesses. So when donald trump goes and raises money, like he did 5 million or so strong yesterday in texas, that money goes a lot of that money goes back to the party, and it helps these down ballot candidates, some of whom arent supporting him. Im misifystified by whats g on. Every member in the house is running for reelection. Some of them see him as not helpful to their causes. Nonetheless, the argument has been, okay, hes better than her because she will pick all these new people for the Supreme Court, and we dont want that to happen. Thats been a pretty clear message. Its been a clear choice from the get go. That hasnt changed, but this has. That hasnt changed at all. In fact, the Supreme Court also, if you want somebody whos strong and serious about the feeding of Islamic Radical terrorism, if you want someone who knows how to create jobs, theres so many different issues that face this country. And the stark choice could not be more clear between clinton and trump. And yet, you do have a number of republicans who otherwise agree with the policies of donald trump in the Republican Party now i think making it easier for Hillary Clinton in some ways to win to compete in some of their states. Its unfortunate, but donald trump will do what hes done all along, which is take her message directly to the people, through the noise or through the silence, whichever can may be. Whats going to happen in the future . Will a totally Different Party emerge from all of this . Because youve got a Republican Party thats split. Even donald trump is admitting that and writing in his tweets how the democrats, at least theyre being loyal. No matter what happens, no matter what these wikileaks things say, theyre loyal. Meanwhi meanwhile, his party is split. Will we see a new party emerge . I doubt that. What i think youll see is what i think you do see is a party that has growing pains because it is an expansive party that represents different view points. I think this party was very dangerously close to being the party of the eelites, yet, donad trump is giving voice to the workers. When i go to his rallies, i see folks there from all stages of life and frankly folks who have spent their days very differently. I think because hes given voice to, as he says, the forgotten man, forgotten woman, hes been able to expand the party in many ways. And look, id rather be the Republican Party than the Democratic Party. You talk loyalty, but loyalty can be blind. The idea youre going to have democrats staying with Hillary Clinton after whats been revealed in emails, the way they really truly feel about people, referring to catholics, denigrating news corp. s Rupert Murdoch because of his catholic religion. What do all the catholics out there feel about it . If im donald trump, im going to stand at the podium and read from these emails to see how these democrats and Hillary Clinton truly feel. So in the debate the other night, he said i feel like im debating not just Hillary Clinton but the entire press corps. This Wikileaks Dump validates that. A lot of collusion. John harwood really went after trump in one of the primary debates. I remember trump complaining about it. And irredeemable. Then you have bill clinton just down in florida in the last day or so saying this about Trump Supporters. You know, look, the other guys face is what i grew up in. Im basically your standard red neck. Then he said trump was confuse by the coal people in West Virginia and kentucky. Thats offensive to people down south. It should be offensive to everyone, but certainly offensive to the people he was targeting specifically. I dont know that bill clinton is helping his wife much on campaign trail these days. Even earlier this week in the debate, one of the lowest moments for Hillary Clinton in that debate was when she was asked to explain why she would call millions of people irredeemable and deplorable. She said, well, i apologize for that. He said, no, you only apologized for the number. You are off by a margin of about tens of millions of people. Its only in those unguarded moments. I want people to Pay Attention to that. What donald trump has said is when he win, he will be the president of all americans, even those who vociferously opposed his candidacy. There you go. Exactly the contrition and the humility and the apology he expressed is what i saw privately as well. Im glad he did that. I think when people seek mercy and forgiveness, we ought to be given all these people, the high horse sanctimony from some. You see Hillary Clintons top people attacking catholics. Yet, when somebody asks for forgiveness and mercy, were going to look the other way. Im glad hes contrite, and im glad he denounced his comments the way people like me and his wife have. They said, okay, hes apologized, time to move on. But the obsessiveness with some over this particular incident and these tapes is really, to tuckers earlier point, thats a different kind of media bias. I dont know what the 16 million plus women who are in poverty and the 12 million plus women who dont have Health Insurance as i sit here are thinking of some of the networks that are completely obsessed with this and not allowing them at least a fair and full opportunity to assess what the two candidates plans are on the issues that really affect them in their lives. A recent audit by the Inspector General for the centers for medicare and medicaid found the agency improperly paid 1. 5 million in benefits to dead people between the years 2013 and 2015. Now, according to the audit, the Agency Processed 1,047 medicare claims worth nearly 1. 5 million for services after the recipients date of death. How does this happen . Well, while the agency does have processes in place to make sure benefits do not continue, it relies on data from the Social Security administration to prevent fraud. A spokesman said that the agency is strongly committed to Program Integrity efforts in medicare and continuously works to prevent improper payments to deceased ben fish yeficiarieben. Theyre ridiculing Rupert Murdoch, who runs Fox News Channel and news corp. , and is the managing editor at the wall street journal. A fellow by the name of robert thompson. Ridicules them for being catholic and raising their children as catholics. And this is what the first fella, the guy at the think tank, John Halperin says about catholicism. It is an amazing bastardization of the faith, he writes in this email. They must be attracted to the systematic thought and severely backwards gender relations. Jenn palmieri writes, i imagine they think it is the most socially acceptable politically conservative religion. Their rich friends wouldnt understand if they became evangelica evangelicals. The contempt is unbelievable. Think, 20 years ago Many American catholics were democrats. The Democratic Party represented people like this. How much has the party changed . That shows you the direction of the country. I believe my faith is extremely important to me. Im not perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Thats why i need to go to church. Thats why i need faith in my life. I want to raise my daughter in a christian home. Thats offensive to a lot of people, but it makes me feel sorry for them because they obviously havent ever experienced the love and the forgiveness that i believe christianity brings to my home and to me. Lets be honest. Are sincere people of faith really the problem . Are people who want to baptize their kids catholic the problem . Theyre not. People are raising their kids without faith. I think no matter what youre faith is, it convicts you, it prevents you from going down a wrong path in many cases. You know, it saves your life. But look at the double standard. We were talking about this earlier. Had they been talking about islam and muslims instead of catholics, you know, the New York Times would be putting out a special edition right now, every 15 minutes on the very latest on this. The president would have a primetime press conference. We had steve hilton on earlier talking about this topic. He was once upon a time an adviser to David Cameron from the uk. He said this hes disgusted. Hes a catholic. Listen. The attitude reveelt edreveat is so disgraceful. Look at the outrage, the correct outrage, about Donald Trumps remarks the other day with respect to women. The remarks there about people with faith are just as bad in a different way. Now, imagine further if those remarks were from republicans about people who are muslims. Just imagine. In that line about thundershower lack of understanding about different types of christianity, they would like to see christ n christianity as politically on their side. In a way, thats worse. They want to make it political, to politicize something that is so deep and profound for people. I think its really disgusting. Big question is, is this how the campaign views catholics . In a normal year, in a normal campaign with a normal political party, you would have people falling all over themselves to apologize for this bigoted attack on people of faith. The survivor on board reveals that chilling detail to police as we learn that the student pilot, who was killed in the crash, is a jordanian national. We do know this morning that the plane was heading for the Flight School just over our Connecticut River here. The Connecticut Airport Authority confirming to us there were two people on board. The pilot, a flying School Instructor reportedly jumped out before crashing. Another person on board, a student, did not make it out alive. Heres where this all gets very interesting. The New York Times is reporting that the pilot told investigators this crash was not an accident. Theyre also reporting that the student killed was a 28yearold man from just outside the chicago area, that he was certified to fly a singleengine plane. The faa is telling us, however, that the plane that crashed was a twin engine piper pa34. At a news conference, they updated us. Police said the investigation will be a key factor into figuring out exactly who was controlling the plane at the time that it went down. Donald trump accusing the department of justice of, quote, colluding with the Clinton Campaign after the latest batch of leaked emails appear to show that doj gave the campaign a heads up on court cases that pertain to the former secretary of state. Doj folks informed me theres a status hearing in this case this morning so we could have a window into the judges thinking about this proposed production schedule as quickly as today. Now, i dont see an alternate explanation here. Seems like the department of justice is colluding with the clinton people, even as they investigate her email matter. Is that what it looks like to you . Well, i dont know what you mean by the people dont want to believe that the United States department of justice is corrupt. It is corrupt, and it extends from the white house as well. This started out years ago when the thenattorney general eric holder became the only attorney general in u. S. History to ever be found in contempt of congress. You know, this corruption, its all throughout the government. Its the courts, its our institutions of government, the higher ups at the fbi, u. S. Doj, the congress, on and on. I believe the American People are finally going to have to rise up. Its pitchfork time in america to get these people out of here. This whole thing stinks. Its illegitimate. You, of course, work for the government. Youre in law enforcement. You see the Justice System at work every day. And you hate what i meant in my first question by you hate to think this, the idea that the average person is held to a different standard legally than people in power is the most corrosive idea that you could have. People really start to believe that, then thats a threat to our system itself, isnt it . Its a big threat to the system. Theyre going to have to believe it if its going to change. You look at this current attorney general, when she met with bill clinton on the plane, you know, days before the u. S. Doj announced they would not charge mrs. Bill clinton in the email scandal and the secret server. You know, youre right. People have lost faith in this thing. Theres a different standard. Theres no doubt about that. Look at the irs. Weve got an election cycle where weve got two choices. I get donald trump is not perfect. I get that hes made mistakes. Hes said a lot of things we dont like. This is not about left and right. The press doesnt even pick this stuff up. Doesnt he have a point . His campaign is arguing which is worse, his words or hillarys actions. Its an interesting question. Joining us now, republican pollster kristen anderson, a columnist for the washington examiner, and linda tram, democratic strategist and former staffer of tim kaine. First, i dont think anyone would argue that trumps comments on access hollywood dont constitute a news story. They do. But here you have a series of remarkable leaks from the chairman of the Hillary Campaigns email account in which, among other things, you know, the hillary people attack catholics, appear to show coordination between the campaign and the Justice Department, et cetera. Shouldnt the press be covering these things . Well, look, i think the campaign has been pretty clear theyre questioning the voracity of these emails. Thats part of it. Let me correct you. I dont think thats true. I dont think anyone in the campaign has said these are forgeries. I dont think thats right. I think john podesta has been on air quite frequently saying hes questioning some of the vor rasty of the emails. That said, i think part of the issue is were not comparing words from donald trump to words from hillary or some of of her senior advisers. Were looking at visuals from access hollywood and comparing that to words. Visuals are compelling to people. So thats part of whats happening here. Secondly, i think part of the issue is if what happened with donald trump actually impacts voters, its mostly probably going to impact those white collegeeducated women voters. Those have been people who have been really critical to republican victories in the past. I mean, there are two ways to look at that. One, as a sort of political matter. The other sort of revovls around substance. Thats one of the calls that news organizations exist to make. I dont think any rational person could say trumps comments, ugly as they undoubtedly were, are more inherently significant than some of the things were learning from this document dump. Could you reach that conclusion . I think theyre boetd pretty significant. I think part of the reason why were seeing perhaps less attention paid to the Wikileaks Dump than we are to the access hollywood tapes have to deal with the subject matter itself and what the American Public is sort of hungry to see. I was fascinated on friday by the timing of the Wikileaks Dump. It seemed as though it was coming out an attempt to take people away from talking about the tapes. Heres Something Else to talk about. Sort of misreading that the American Public, i think, is always going to want to watch a sex scandal unfold than sort of finding out yet again that Hillary Clinton and her team are less than forthright with the American People. I think part of it is just the shock factor. The idea that Hillary Clinton has secret positions that she holds behind closed doors or or actually wants open trade, i dont think these are things that actually surprise people as much as the tapes surprised people about what donald trump was saying. So linda, can we clear up one factual point . Youre hearing the Hillary Clinton campaign say this is the result of russia trying to influence the outcome of this election. I just want to be clear. We dont know that. We dont actually know where these leaks came from. We dont know that it the russian government or russian intelligence or Russian Military had anything to do with that . Its a lie, and theyre trying to divert away from the substance of the emails. You know, i dont actually know where that information came from. I do know the campaign has been saying for quite a number of months now that some of the various document dumps that have happened along the way independent authorities have said have been part of a larger effort by russian government officials to interfere with the american campaign.
