[ cheering ] did we mention we're at hofstra university for tonight's big debate? the presidential candidates in a virtual dead heat ahead of tonight's debate. a new "washington post" abc news poll shows donald trump and hillary clinton tied at 41% in a two-way race among registered voters. how does this line up in past presidential contests? don't ask me. let's talk to national political reporter for real clear politics. she joins us live at hofstra. >> good morning. >> good morning, how are you? >> good, thank you. >> let's take a look. let's look at four years ago. president obama versus mitt romney. how close was it? >> about four years ago there was a 3 or 4-point race at this point. the first debate, there were high expectations for both candidates. president obama by all accounts lost that one.
>> romney was great. >> romney won the debate. then we saw after that debate, the polls reversed themselves. romney took a lead and that was in october. eight years ago around this time, we saw, again, a 3 to 4-point race. obama ahead of mccain. right now, we're looking -- >> by four points. >> right, exactly. right now we're looking at a three-point race. a head to head matchup. clinton is ahead by almost 3 points. four years ago, what happened after the first debate and romney started to surge was in the second debate, candy crowley fact checked him and it blew things up and then hurricane superstorm sandy and all that stuff going on. >> exactly. all goes to show that lots of things can change in a short amount of time. while this debate i think is the most important we've seen in a long time, really. this is the first time we're seeing these two candidates who are unpopular in the polls, both facing a significant

trump's favor. that's why there's so much riding on him tonight in the debate. his campaign believes if he can fight to a draw, that's a win for him. they are putting expectations very high on hillary clinton. 53% of people in that poll think that hillary clinton is going to win. she's got the higher bar. >> hillary has 46 and you said trump has 44. if she stayed where she has always been. she was about 8 points ahead in august. he's the one going up and up. why is he --? >> i think it's the whole change. he was shooting himself so bad in the summer, it was almost a wasted summer for donald trump. when he got the new team in, they have really kind of turned things around. the teleprompter has probably the best thing that's ever happened to him. >> as they start the debates, they are both tied. donald trump didn't have a lot of debate prep. he did some watching of the tapes.
meanwhile, hillary clinton was in a hotel not too far from here until what, midnight last night? >> she went late night last night. bottom line, this is going to set the stage for the final six week of this campaign. so hillary clinton put in a lot of prep work getting ready, hoping her experience in dozens of presidential debates will finally pay off, and so clinton is not taking any chances. she spent 2 1/2 hours last night rehearsing once again, getting ready for tonight's big contest here at hofstra university. her team has defended hardware taking time off the campaign trail, essentially saying that these three presidential debates over the final six weeks will be the biggest events in the final homestretch, and so bottom line, they are counting on hillary clinton delivering tonight, but they are also worried that donald trump may not get fact-checked. >> she takes the debate preparation very seriously. she respects the american public but she has a challenge because donald trump says things that aren't true.
she's got to be able to both make that positive case but also not let donald trump get away with what he's likely to do, which is to make stuff up. >> so she's spent a great deal of time in the debate prep book. she spent a great deal of time with her aides going over questions. the question is does she come across too rehearsed tonight and as we know, guys, from watch these over the years. a lot of times it's not the policies they lay on you, it's the sigh, it's the looking at the watch. it's some unscripted moment that everybody remembers. >> how much tougher can she be in -- than her attack ads? she's also put up stuff about the rosie o'donnell. >> hundred million people haven't seen it all. we've been watching every day. >> she's been waiting her entire adult life for this election.

poemts is actually a couple of inches bigger than the other. the one screen right has been constructed to be a little bigger, most probably because hillary is about 10 inches shorter than donald trump. . she's 5' 4" and he's 6'2". they are trying to even the high field. >> it's very similar. the speculation is she's going to be standing on that. which is not unusual. >> no, i have no problem with that. i think they should be on an even playing field. i knew if i were a lot shorter than you guys, i would want a little lift on my chair, probably. >> no debate. >> she's getting her personalized podium and something to stand on. meanwhile, as you look at the history of presidential debates, and they go back to nixon and also kennedy back in 1960, there have been some that have stood out. one of them was back in 1984 when ronald reagan who at that
point was 73 years old, he was the oldest guy ever to run for president to that stage, and walter mondale had made something of that. reagan had a shot. he had a rehearsed line that he delivered and that kind of turned things around. remember this. >> i will not make age an issue of this campaign. i am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponents youth and inexperience.
