It was discovered not far from charlottesville, virginia, on an abandoned property that happens to be just steps away from the home of the chief suspect in this case, Jesse Matthew. The body or remains of Morgan Harrington were found after she was abducted, raped and murdered. Grahams parents have been notified by Law Enforcement. They did this ahead of holding a press conference. They are saying that they are not certain that these human remains belong to Hannah Graham, but they have called off the search, which was set to begin again today. They have called that off. Lets take a listen to what Law Enforcement had to say. Todays discover sri a significant development. And we have a great deal of work ahead of us. We cannot jump to any conclusions regarding todays discovery. So i ask for the publics patience as we pursue a new death ongoing investigation. A lot of questions are still unanswered because the identity of the body, we know it could take weeks to truly identify the body from dna evidence, dental evidence. Were going to have a forensic expert on the show to break down how this all goes on behind the scenes and what they are looking for. Why it is important to have a body in all of this. And when you Start Connecting the dots with all of this, with Jesse Matthew being a dna match to evidence found with the harrington site and her body. And also being a match for a Sexual Assault where the girl was a i believe to get away in 2005 and come up with a sketch for a face that looks very much like Jesse Matthew. We are learning a lot more about his background. The background of 32yearold Jesse Matthew. There he was on the screen. He was forced to leave two separate virginia universities. Liberty university in lynchburg, and Christopher Newport, after two women accused him of forcible rape. He was not indicted in either case but forced to withdraw after two women accused him of rape. Also n the interviews, various bar patrons said he was a familiar person on the scene, often seen lurking in the shadows of the bars following girls very drunk. And a week after she went missing, hi bizarrely showed up at the police department, asked for a lawyer and drove off as fast as he could after being named as a person in the case. And they found him camping on a beach in galveston, texas, and took him into custody for abduction and attempts to file. They presumed he was wanting to sexually assault her like the other women we have mentioned. Well have more on this as the show continues. Well talk about another big story we are following here, which is ebola. And the president is holding a meeting with his Top Communications team yesterday. Its a similar meeting to one he held on friday but noticeably absent from both meetings was this guy, ron clayton, the new czar of ebola under the Obama Administration. But he wasnt there. So you think your top guy in charge of this investigation and leading this coordination effort would be at that meeting. The all hands on deck meeting. Hes probably at the house doing his rounds. I actually wanted to see a military person to be able to do that because he needs someone who can cut through all the layers of federal bureaucracy. Of course, still at this hour, the president is doubling down on his idea to not issue a travel ban while other experts are coming out to say even ahead of the Medical Center saying, weve had a long history of doing travel bans or at least quarantining individuals to come into the United States going back to the cholera epidemic in new york city when people would get off the boat, we managed to stop that dead in its tracks. This is the president s rational for this. He laid it out in as clear terms as he had. Watch. We cant just cut ourselves off from west africa where this disease is raging. Our medical experts tell us the best way to stop the disease is to stop it at its source before it spreads even wider and becomes even more difficult to conta contain. Are we going to fix that . No, we are not. Initially the president said it is important to send in the medical workers and then they said, lets add charter flights instead. It will make americans less safe if we have a travel ban because people are lying about travel history and wont seek medical attention. How did Thomas Duncan get here in the first place . He lied about his travel history and about not caring for a woman who had ebola. Last night on fox news colonel allen west said we need a travel ban. We need to quarantine the nurses we have here in the United States. Why are we so concerned about the fact that the one nurse, Amber Vincent, was able to get on a plane and travel. So the Obama Administration needs to go back to make sure they understand the number one priority is to protect the american people. And if they have some type of restricted travel ban in place, mr. Duncan wouldnt have gotten here to the United States of america. The first thing i would do is i dont fault anybody in liberia or any of the countries for why they come here. This guy came from liberia, what did we do . Spent a half million on medical care. He died but the United States helped him. Thats the mess age to everyone else. Virginia authorities still are awaiting confirmation from forensic scientists. What can they learn from these latest developments . It could take weeks, but i think they have all but said it was her given that they called the parents and called off the searchers, but im wondering if the clothing that was really distinctive is still on the body, perhaps. Because i cant imagine them calling the parents without being rather certain. Also, they found it in a place that could be more it could be a structure. They werent very clear about that, which mean that is the body could be rather preserved. Not too far from morgan was found, but not found in a field, so the difference here is finding the bod academy a structure would help authorities . Absolutely. Because skeletal remains make it very difficult to determine any kind of manner of death. You saw that in the Casey Anthony trial. Nobody could determine whether the child was murdered, so of course the jury went not guilty. This case could be really complicated because, in fact, they know that Jesse Matthew was with her that night. So to find some of his dna on her would be natural. It wouldnt necessarily mean that he killed her at all. So it could get complicated. Okay. So dna can be of different sorts. What about finding semen or other body fluid . Thats a different story. If the body is well preserved, they will find other things. If it is skeletal remains, because its been five weeks, you wont find any of that. So thats the complication for this. How difficult for prosecutors will it be to put together a case based on the evidence you know right now at this stage . It seems really obvious to most of us, but i think that if theres no forensic evidence that is of that type, you know, if it is not semen or a bodily fluid, he was with her. Theres no reason a piece of his hair could be on her. So it could be complicated to prove it. So we are hearing now at one of the schools he attended that he was forced to withdraw from, there was one woman who disappeared while he was there. Do you think police are treating this potentially as a serial kill her . I think they have to. Especially because they have released theres a dna link with harrington. So its exactly the same kind of crime as this. And it just is very obvious to the rest of us. When you get down to the actual criminal trial, it could be dicy. We have a few weeks so understand from your expertise that this will take a little bit of time for them to confirm this is Hannah Graham. What are they looking for in that time to confirm that . You have been following this story for a month ago, 35 days since Hannah Graham was last spotted on the surveillance video, what do you make of the recent development is this. The most recent development as we all know, there were remains found yesterday right outside the walnut creek park, which is only 9 1 2 miles from where anna was abducted. What is huge about this and this is a huge development, guys, that the police now have a crime scene that they can go in and try to recover more evidence. And thats exactly what they are doing right now as i speak. They spent all day yesterday on the crime scene gathering evidence. What they want to try to determine is whether or not, and this is critical, whether or not matthews was at the crime scene at some point. ;2ic they were i think they will show that pretty quickly. They will also know the identification of the remains by tuesday at the latest. Based off dental records, although one of my sources has told me that Law Enforcement was able to recover some items of clothing from the crime scene, which closely resembles that hannah was wearing the night she disappeared. We see that in the video, right . From the homicide detectives point of view, rod, are they using the termer is yal kill her . Serial kill her . Not yet. We do have a serial killer. We have an individual and i honestly believe it is Jesse Matthew. Connect the dots, we simply connect the dots. Look at the similarities with all these cases, even morgan hardi harringtons case. This is not far from where Morgan Harrington was killed back in 2009. So all these things will be related and i think the police pretty much now have a good lead in terms of where they are going to go to gather more evidence and pin as many of these cases as they can on Jesse Matthew. I think they have a lot of circumstantial evidence. What is likely that he will confess to this . Is the lawyer preventing them from talking to him . As far as i know now, and this is what my very reliable q says, Jesse Matthew claims he wont say anything. And thats okay. With the crime scene from yesterday, the police now are able to gather a lot more direct physical evidence, i believe, that is going to link Jesse Matthew to the crime scene. I think well see a charge of murder in the first degree come down probably very quickly in this case. Remember, thats all that is left in this case, to link him to the crime scene. And i think using bodily fluids, i think the mud and grime from his car that matches probably the crime scene yesterday. All of these things are going to be evidence used against Jesse Matthew in the case. We have the side by side of Morgan Harrington and Hannah Graham and Jesse Matthew in the middle. But it is not just two women, his dna is found in a Sexual Assault from 2005 when he was accused of rape twice. The charges were never filed as the women never brought charges. So are authorities focusing on this case or doing what youre mentioning, connecting the dots to try to link them together . I think a combination of both, anna. They are focused on this case to charge him with murder if the remains show she was murdered, and we do believe she was. At the same time, they are working with agencies here in the d. C. Area and down in charlottesville to see what other similarities they can match that would ultimately lead them to a person such as Jesse Matthew. I think they can do that relatively quickly now. How open is the crime scene and the location to relatives for Jesse Matthew . It is huge. As a matter of fact, let me give you an idea of this area. And im very similar with the area right off highway 29, which is a major roadway that leads directly from charlottesville to north river virginia, which is a small town where the remains were found. Its a direct shot. This is an area, this is and area that Jesse Matthew was very familiar with. He grew up in the area, so the police looked many the area before they looked again yesterday. You cant change the rules before the election so one last time to use voter i. D. In texas, but heres what eric holder is scared about. If they hold this election in texas and all of the claims that minorities will not be able to vote prove to be untrue, because there will be data, they can tell, if all the claims that voter i. D. Is the coming of jim crow and stops minorities from going to the polls, it will be egg on his face and look like they are crying wolf from the very beginning. The same thing happened in North Carolina where the Supreme Court allowed rules to stay in place there and it has these civil Rights Groups and the d. O. J. In a very tough position if the facts on the ground prove otherwise. When did we all agree that having to show an i. D. Is racist . Cant you say that this is used to prevent people from driving vehicles . Are those racist, too . Those things arent in the constitution like the right to vote, free of racial discrimination. But you know what . Getting married is and so is owning a gun, but you have to use i. D. For that. Heres the problem for texas. That court down in corpus christi, a federal court, found that this law was enacted for racial intent. That is a factual finding. And it is almost impossible to reverse that on appeal. Courts of appeal let the judges below have their factual finding. What texas aught to do with what governor perry aught to do and attorney general abbott aught to do is immediately call for a special session or get new legislation that parents South Carolina or georgia or any of the other places like arizona that have had their voter i. D. Held. Just pass the same law and cut the legs from out of eric holder. Have they made the case that, theres a lot of voter fraud in the United States, is there not . Does the administration not think thats a big deal . Well, they put that evidence up and thats the problem texas has is that the lower court found that this law was enacted with a racially discriminatory intent. It is almost impossible to escape from those factual findings, whether we think crazy or not, but the lower court found it. So the problem is this law is probably doomed. And the way that texans care about the integrity is to pass a new law quick. It lub interesting to know how they prove intent. Do they have emails from one election official to another saying lets disenfranchise people based on their skin color . It is hard to prove. I proved it in a mississippi Voting Rights case. What you do is this complicated thing where you say, they did things a little differently in texas and held a special session, they did it quickly. They talked to these people and not those people. It is not like a liee detector test but the circumstantial evidence. But thats good enough under the vote rights act. Okay. The argument on the other side, im trying to find a devils advocate side to this, you put your post out on twitter and they are not owned by me. As soon as i log into twitter, my posts are not owned by me as well. Twitter can make money off of it or sell books off of it. What is twitter saying, if anything . The argument i have seen is that, look, we just want to study how different means or political themes end up generating themselves to be popular. But in this case, if you look at the study parameters, the researchers themselves identify social pollution to stuff out hate speech in social pop beg propaganda. This is an objective way to see how these develop on twitter. This is an area where whatever legitimate research may have been done here seems to flush away considering the concerns it raises. Leland vittert is live where the remains were found in virginia with the latest. Reporter well, good morning, anna, claytop and morris. Police have yet to confirm if the remains are that of Hannah Graham but suspended search efforts that began more than a month ago when she disappeared and they have called her parents about this latest discovery. Hannah graham disappeared late one night while walking on the downtown charlottesville pedestrian mall. We are told the place that this body was found in an abandoned building is reportedly very close to where the suspect grew up. Thats Jesse Matthew, thedown man seen on surveillance tape with Hannah Graham just after she was down on the charlottesville mall. Police were visibly emotional in their press conference. This investigation is complicated. Its a complex investigation. And its unlikely well have any information in the very near future and perhaps the days to come that well be able to share with you about what we learned today. And where we are just to set the scene for you is roughly about 20 minutes outside of charlottesville past the university in terms of where the body was found from where i am, a half mile down the road where police set up their command post. They stayed here overnight and are continuing to search for evidence this morning. Keep in mind, also, this is the second person that Jesse Matthew is linked to. The other is Morgan Harrington who disappeared from a concert. Her body was also found on an an b abandoned property. The girl was able to get away. And he left Christopher Newport university after he allegedly committed rape there. Matthew was forced to leave that college and another immediately. Where leland was near where the body was found, we understand it was in some sort of a structure. Which as Forensic Experts point out is good news for police because they may be able to gather news, Jennifer Ballenger has been on this case. Im wondering if the clothing was distinctive and is on the body. Because i cant imagine them calling the parents if they were not rather certain. And it could be a structure, they werent very clear about that, which means the body could be rather preserved. Preserved with no rod wheeler was on earlier and Law Enforcement sources told him there were pieces of clothing on the body probably distinctive to match what we saw in the surveillance videos. Then what happened one day . One day i developed a severe sinus infection that reached the most deadly state that it can reach and kills 70 of the people who have it. And i was just one of the few people that it affected the eyes. It went from perfect 20 20 vision to no vision at all. What was it like the next day after that happened . Well, i dont remember the first time i realized i couldnt see. But my parents tell me that when they came in and talked to me about it after the doctors told us i was probably never going to see again and i said, i believe i will see again. But if i dont, i cant wait to see what god is going to do with my story. And that has been my attitude from the very beginning. Im not going to allow my blindness to hold me back. How can you go from being on the football field and then the coach says, were going to do this all over again. How do owe relearn the game . I had a great coach who was a visionary with this. My parents went to him and said, travis, we want him to get some exercise and be a part of the team. We dont expect him to play or anything. And the coach said no, hell be the center, the guards are lining up to tell him where his man is. There was never a question in my mind about whether or not i could do this. It was just natural and home. Theres new information i have learned again this morning is that the actual remains were found outside of the rear of an old abandoned farmhouse. And it was underneath, the remains were found underneath a shall doe grave according to my sources. And the police were able to make a quick decision in terms of who this person could have been by the clothing found on the crime scene. There were articles of clothing found at the Crime Scene Police believe belong to Hannah Graham. Within an hour of fighting the remains, they immediately contacted happen ins parents and informed them of their findings. The forensic Investigation Unit is on the scene. They were there all night last night and were there all day yesterday. They are gathering so much information. This is critical in the investigation. Real quickly, what they are trying to do is to make sure they can place Jesse Matthew on the case or the scene where the remains were found. I think they can do that based from the evidence they have been able to find so far. Jesse matthew was also linked to the harrington case. But the remains of Hannah Graham were found in a structure. Can you compare the two . The two remains were found very close to each other. The other thing significant is that Jesse Matthews mother owned a home a block away from where the remains were found yesterday. And this is an area that Jesse Matthew grew up in and is familiar with. The remains yesterday were found a straight shot, 9 1 2 miles from the area where hannah was abducted. Really interesting. We got a fox news alert to get right to, because breaking news. A grizzly find in the search for missing university of virginia student Hannah Graham a body found near the family home of a suspect already in custody. Leland vitter is near where those remains were found. Whats the latest . Reporter anna, good morning. Police have not formally confirmed this is the body of Hannah Graham but they have suspended their search efforts and have also called hannahs parents to let them know about this fining. It began about noon yesterday when a Law Enforcement search team thats been going around these parts, a very rural virginia for the past 35 or so days since hannah disappeared came across this discovery inside an abandoned building. Police believe this is the remains of Hannah Graham who disappeared more than a month ago. The person she was last seen with is Jesse Matthew. That was on surveillance tape at about 1 00 in the morning. And police now are focused in on this Southern Area here outside of charlottesville, about 20 minutes or so and we have learned that reports indicate right now that this is very close to where Jesse Matthew grew up here and police who have been part of this investigation, certainly the chief of police who has really taken this personally got a little bit emotional at his press conference. This investigation is complicated. Its a complex criminal investigation. Its unlikely well have any information in the very near future and perhaps days to come that well be able to share with you about what we learned today. Reporter and the Police Command post is just about half a mile past this road block here and police are continuing to search for clues in and around this abandoned building and this property here in this rural part of virginia. Meantime Jesse Matthew remains in jail on charges related to Hannah Grahams be a ducks. So far hes not been charged with murder. Keep in mind hes been linked to one other missing girl here in this part of virginia, Morgan Harrington who disappeared a few years ago. She was also found dead in abandoned property. Near that crime scene, what do we know about this location near the suspects mothers home and does this bring any other concern about the other missing woman, morgan. Rod wheeler was talking about this location and how important it is. Listen. Reporter very significant, anna, they were found so close by, maybe two miles from each other from where morgan went missing from where the remains were found yesterday. The other thing thats very significant is that Jesse Matthews mother owned a home about a block away from where the remains were found yesterday, and this is an area that Jesse Matthew grew up in and very familiar with. Where these remains were found yesterday is a straight shot, only about 9 1 2 miles from the area in which hannah was abducted. This just may be the beginning. Jesse matthew apparently was tossed out of two different colleges after coeds accused him not of raping them. Theres reports that at least one other woman disappeared and has never been found at the time he was a student at Christopher Newport university in virginia. We believe this story may get a lot bigger. Morgan harrington, Hannah Graham, the one incident where the woman was able to get away. Two rape allegations. Then a sixth. We dont know if theres a drerkt linkage. Police are looking at this not as an isolated crime but a serial pat person. They are connecting those dots. We get some creepy information about matthew hovering around this mall and waiting at the end of the night for the drunkest girl in the bar. We know from that videotape as Hannah Graham came out she was strumbling out drunk and he swoops in. Same with Morgan Harrington leaving the metallica concert. So they were demanding to know after ebola had already arrived in the United States where the cdc was on researching gun violence and so we did a poll to find out thats crazy. Well and the American Public agrees. We asked the American Public, do you think that gun violence is a Public Health issue or is it a criminal justice issue. 84 said its a criminal justice issue. Should the cdc be spending its resources researching gun violence or should it be researching diseases and infectious diseases. 88 said they should spend their resources on things like ebola. Of course. Firearms are not germs. I cant catch an ak47 on the subway. What does it have to do with the mission of the cdc in the first place it has nothing to do with the mission of the cdc. In fact, back in the 1990s under the antigun Clinton Administration the cdc was spending money on researching gun violence treating firearms as if they were a pathogen and promulgating under the guise of research antigun control agendas to ban firearms and things like that. I think all of us as were growing up we try to make sense of this world. Many go to faith. Many stray away from it. When did you decide you were an atheist. It was really a slow process where i didnt decide one day. I was raised in a pretty nonreligious home not hostile and we had certain sort of cultural christian elements like having Christmas Carols on the stereo during christmas time. There was no bible, never went to church. I never thought about whether any of this was true or not. I went off to college, secular schools. Good schools. Got a good education. But i absorbed the kind of attitude that christianity was just a historic thing, a superstition that, up to date intellectuals didnt need it and that led me to then as i was doing my first masters degree when i started to encounter christians who were pushy and kind of aggressive in their evangelism the two things went together to make me start to selfive and say i have no reason to believe this is true. I dont think its true. I dont like what im saying and thats when i thought yes atheism is my view. You felt these people were being duped by the bible. But all of a sudden you found yourself becoming a christian so these very things you thought were duping people were dupe ug. What do you think about this . Well, i have to admit, it was a very terrifying and embarrassing process because when i started to ask these questions to say are the christian claims actually true, i had to work past my own sense of awkwardness that well maybe these people that i had been dismissing, maybe they actually had some valid to say. And oddly enough it was poets rather than apologetic arguments who got me thinking about that. Some english professor, i teach apologetics now but my background is english literature. It was in reading these great poets first as reading great literature as a child, then reading great poetry in college and having it stick with me that then as i was teaching literature i found myself really finally confronted with the fact that these great intelligent brilliant authors believed what they were writing about. That led me to ask some questions. Maybe this isnt so simple. We have a picture of you being baptized. You say youve had some people call you a traitor who are atheists especially some trolls online. They say you were never an atheist in the first place. The question is what i believe true or is it not true . Questions about how i got there are interesting in terms of the journey. I think very important in terms of how i came to grasple with the faith. Really i think trying to focus on whether or not i fit a category of atheism is a bit misleading. For my own view i believed there was no god. I think thats pretty clearly atheism. So many people think, i would love to have they see what christians have and they would love to have what they have, that light inside them but i cant believe and that was what unit into and now you transformed. Police now waiting for confirmation that the Human Remains Found yesterday may be those of missing university of virginia student Hannah Graham who disappeared just over a month ago. What are Forensic Experts looking for and what could a positive i. D. Mean . Joining us now is former nypd detective and investigator thomas ruskin. What do you make of the investigation so far over the past day now that we have this body identified or partially identified. What will they do over the next week or so. Chances are, it appears to be hannah. And the police wouldnt have gone to the extent they went to yesterday at the press conference if the remains didnt look like hannah or resemble hannah. Now its just a matter of positive i. D. ing. They will determine it is hannah maybe by dental records, blood records, dna records and then what they will do is look for the cause of death. Maybe tie it then further to matthew. Obviously much easier to get a suspect to confess than have to go through the process of gathering evidence. Is there any way, what tactics would you use to get him to talk . Well, i mean, they obviously have tried to get him to talk. This is a man who chances are have committed more than one homicide and probably more than one sexual abuse and homicide. I mean, there are cases now that they are saying go back to 03 when he was in college where he may have sexually assaulted someone he was in college with. This is a guy who may have solved a bunch of open cold cases, cold cases that havent been solved as of yet of people he killed, maybe raped and killed. Until yesterday it was a missing persons case. They were going to go out and search for her today. That search has been called off because they believe its Hannah Graham. Now that we have a body how important is that for justice, for mr. Matthew . Its going to be very important because now you may be able to charge him with a homicide. Up until now when they locked him up in galveston they only charged him with the abduction and attack on her but didnt charge him with the homicide. Now you have forensic evidence that may tie you definitively to matthew. He may have, if he did sexually attack her there may be dna left on the body or around the body that may tie him definitively to the crime. For our viewers just waking up who arent familiar with where this location is. Set the scene for us. How important is this structure where this body may have been found as opposed to being out in a wooded area where animals and the weather could have gotten to it. Thats why i think they know its hannah, they can see the body and they know that it resembles hannah and the fact of the matter is to your point, which is a very good point, the body and the area hasnt decomposed over the weeks well almost month and a half that its been there. Thats going very crucial to investigators that its almost a pristine, hopefully almost a pristine crime scene. Interesting. Sad. But interesting. Hopefully this does clear up cold cases. It brings closure to family. As someone who has been there when you have to tell the family, to annas point its always bean missing case. They say they got nervous especially when a coast guard helicopter landed on the ship yesterday to get a blood sample. My heart started beating fast and i got chills. I knew something was up the way the captain was speaking and when he said that someone had been on here who had possibly come in contact i lost it. We could have gotten off in mexico. As for the two nurses who have come down with ebola, nina pham is in maryland at the National Institutes of health. Her boyfriend and three family members have been quadranted and amber vinson is in atlanta at the emory hospital. 100 people who she came in contact with are being monitored and we still dont know exactly what caused them to come down with ebola. I have a keen eye here. I can see the one on the right you can see light through it. The one on the left, screen left is the pot gummy bear. If a teen gives a gummy bear to another teen and they eat it out of their hand thinking that its real candy, it could be a pot gummy bear and if they eat , think how sick they could get. It could be lethal. You brought items in here. One of the things i like to tell parents if youre going around with your younger ones and youre chaperoning, have them use a small jar like this and bring a bigger bag. When they go trickortreating and they take that candy, you can dump it into the bigger bag. And then you have a lot of control because even if they want to eat candy as they go house to house, you can take it out of the bag and hand it to them and make sure its wrapped. Something like a gummy bear over here, we have gummy bears that are wrapped. You know those are safe. You dont want them eating loose candy or going into someones home and sticking their hand into a bowl. Do people put this out anymore . What if someone is having a party at their house, an adult halloween party, it could be there on the counter . Candy corn. Other tips that you provided with us this morning for kids. Make sure you tell your kids to wait until they eat candy when they get home. Yes. Eat candy at home. Thats not always easy. Hand them candy themselves so its wrapped.
