50,000 outages in north carolina and virginia were governor glenn youngerkin has declared a state of emergency. pete: a lot of water on the boardwalk and ocean city, maryland, ophelia bringing heavy rains. let's turn to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. >> reporter: last weekend was leave, this weekend ophelia. probably won't have too many more. big storm developed overnight, night before last, got going and became a strong tropical storm, almost a hurricane. center of the storm on shore in parts of north carolina bringing a lot of rain with it, pretty significant in land flooding from this. 3 to 5 inches of rain plus as well. it doesn't move quickly. by tomorrow afternoon, somewhere here, the storm stalls out a little bit, reince itself out, tropical storm warnings in effect and hurricane watches across north carolina. a lot of areas dealing with coastal flooding, high tide cycles with onshore push of moisture, 1 to 3 feet of storm surge to myrtle beach, south carolina to surf city, north carolina. then two to six feet out towards cape hatteras. then towards the lower chesapeake bay. we have storm surge across parts of the jersey shore and the long island sound. a lot of area on the eastern seaboard, a lot of areas getting additional rain. already had a lot of rain, 3 to 4 inches. some areas are saturated. a lot of rain across the northeast that won't take much to cause flooding. keep in mind we will have a wind driven storm. that gets more surface area for the wind to hit, some power outages as well. will: should be a fun weekend traveling. turning to a major washington corruption scandal. new jersey senator bob menendez and his wife facing bribery, fraud, and distortion charges. pete: he reportedly helped egypt's government and received gold bars, a mercedes-benz, cash, and more in return. rachel: alexandria hoff joins us with details. >> reporter: senator menendez stepped down as chairman of the senate relations committee but says he will not give up his elected position despite calls from fellow democrats including governor phil murphy who stated, quote, the alleged facts are so serious they compromise the ability of senator menand as to effectively represent the people of our state, therefore i am calling for his immediate resignation. charges against the senator include bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of the show right, that has to do with bribery related to public officials, the indictment was unsealed yesterday and also named four others. >> senator menon does, the senior us senator from new jersey and the chairman of the senate foreign relations committee, and his wife, nadine menendez, engaged in a corrupt relationship with hana, uribe, and davies. through their relationship, the senator and his wife accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes. rachel: half-million dollars in cash stuffed in his jacket pockets, high value gold bars were also discovered. in exchange for intervening in kernel prosecution, mendez dez was gifted a mercedes. he used sensitive us government information to aid the government of egypt. senator menendez remains defiant. yesterday he stated it is not lost on me how quickly some are rushing to judge a latino and push him out of his seat. i'm not going anywhere. the senator is expect it to appear in federal ct. wednesday. he was tried six years ago on unrelated bribery charges that resulted in a hung jury. will: it's because he's latino. latina. rachel: anything bad that happens to me he is using a family member to establish the relationships with foreign powers to than profit. his wife was the one making the introductions to these guys. that is the same story. rachel: just less money. you make more money doing it for hunter biden way. they made a whole lot more money. i'm not making excuses for him because he is latino. i am saying it is even worse on the hunter biden case. it proves to you when the fbi wants to find connections in bribery they can. that is in the case of hunter biden, they didn't want to connect the dots. pete: seems more straightforward. straight out elected to be their president. they deserve to know if he is putting america's interests first. they deserve to know that donald trump is wittingly or unwittingly an agent for the russian federation. pete: says the guy who at that time or around that time was, pretty allegations, an agent of the egypt and government. rachel: here's what larry kudlow had to say on the matter. >> senator bob but let's start by talking about it now, this one particular instance. you heard about dave portnoy who wrote -- there was a hit piece about him at his pizza fest which is today in new york city. he got wind they were calling sponsors and advertisers at pizza fest and asking them questions like why are you supporting the guy who made racist and misogynistic comments? essentially harassing sponsors into answering that question. he said i will call them. he called the washington post. >> it is a reporting tactic. you want someone to respond, indicate there might be something negative and get them to engage. i wanted them to engage with me. >> sad state of journalism if that is a tactic. what i would say is make up something about somebody. will: he said why is this in an e-mail? sometimes we say provocative things to get them to respond. that is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard. say something false. she didn't think it was false because they published the article anyway. pete: they didn't see this coming. they said he would record the call, he did, it went viral online, they posted the piece. there was a portion of what it says. pizzerias navigate, back lash and dave portnoy's pizza festival. since one bite festival, it was announced in early august, some influences and activists have been calling out the pizzerias, none of the pizzerias or sponsors indicated they were pulling their support after we pressured them. some said they lent their name and reputation to the event in exchange for publicity and access to the social media savvy audience and some support portnoy who they see as a champion of small business. rachel: like he didn't give millions of dollars to small businesses during covid when government couldn't step up and do it efficiently after they forced a shut down but here's what dave portnoy says. it is surreal. we live in a country where activist reporters can admit they are creating a false narrative to generate engagement and controversy and they still publish the article. a good point. pete: it reads like an editorial which is meant to be an opinion piece. this is a food critic writing this, pushing one perspective. i had hit pieces like this where you hear from your friends who say i am hearing from reporters and this is what they are saying and they say this about you, that about you and you go they talk to me, no one is talking to me. i called them before, reporters. what dave portnoy did was recorded the whole thing. that's what you have to do. i'm recording you and record it so that both sides of the conversation are out there. otherwise it can be cathartic to talk to her reporter but they are going to print whatever they want. they have written their hit piece. that's what happened >> nothing to do with money. our budget is 1.62 billion. the school ceo earns one hundred thousand dollars. she has ten chiefs under her which earned $200,000 each. the statistics, 0 students, the total number of students is 6232. 6232 people are not receiving what they need to prepare for the future. their present is under attack, talking about attendance where it is 100 people late in the day, one hundred people absent in a day. a conducive environment is not found in the classrooms because in maryland, we are too concerned to make the crt and gender ideology, they want to teach in the seventh grade about anil, vaginally, masturbation, sex. where is the conducive environment. nothing to do with money. we have plenty of money but are not prioritizing the students. pete: you have kids involved or city, not those schools in particular, you are at the elementary level. how did we get to this point where not a single -- in other schools most kids aren't passing it so it's a citywide thing. how did we get to this point? you mentioned some of it but who is to blame for this? >> first of all, if we don't have a leader that prioritizes students and families it starts at the top. than that leader doesn't inspire a parent to be engaged or held accountable. if the student is not going to show up at school we need to reach a parent. we need to make sure the parent receives the support to make sure their scholar is in school. i blame the leader for not inspiring the community as they always say, to inspire parents to do a great job, to get students into school but you get them into school and what are they taught? >> eagle pass is a small community, we have doors open during the day, close up at night but with the border surge it impacted the local community. every time you make the trip from point a to point bu encounter illegal aliens around communities and what scares them most is when you see young adult males in groups, they start approaching you for money, assistance, got to the point they are digging through trash cans and stuff like that, we don't heal safe especially elderly folks having to maintain their home stock at all times, 24 hours, children, most driving from point a to point be. i live in an area where there is local eagle pass junior high and elementary school one block from each side of the home and you see the increase of parents bringing children over to school because we don't feel safe anymore. rachel: kids can't walk to school anymore. they have to give them a ride because they don't feel safe. there's been a lot of media attention about new york because migrants are being shipped or given flights to new york city and there's been a lot of attention including from some rich residents like the ladies from the view who supported the open border policy biden had but they shouldn't come to new york. when the someone from eagle pass here's people in new york city complaining about illegal immigration, what are your thoughts on that? >> it is a joke. a couple hundred, 200 bodies coming over to their large communities and we are here being swamped by 2,000 and a night's time and we are stuck here with them. we don't get assistance like mayor selena stated or the federal government if these larger communities are complaining that claim to be sanctuary cities they are complaining. it's a joke, we hear about it and we are upset at the same time. going back to what you mentioned regarding how we are feeling at eagle pass a lot of people don't have in mind that we have the railroad, international railroad the crosses the middle of the city and makes repeated stops in different locations and these include elementary schools, day care centers, churches, all sorts of residential spots so it is dangerous. anytime a stop is made you see groups of illegal aliens jumping up in the robust cars, being dispersed to our communities. it is scary, people don't have in mind but we have that real world crossing in the middle of the city. rachel: it's troubling the president won't come to see what his policies have created so thanks for giving that insight, appreciate it. coming up, will kane takes us behind the scenes of the massive release effort that brought countless volunteers to maui after devastating wildfires, that story is next. this was no bear. it was like a bearsquatch! dad. what's a bearsquatch?
