They are a snap in time but Hillary Clinton<\/a> was going to win the election four years ago and we know who is president now. It is a competitive race in michigan. Joe biden, i love both of these men. Joe biden was one of John Dingells<\/a> best friends, saved the auto industry, with me when john got sick, this is a man i worked with bernie. I am a medicare for all person. My father in law was the author of Social Security<\/a> in the first introduce it. These are personal emotional issues. Both men are good men. Im very worried about it. We need to pull together. I remember how ugly it was four years ago and how vitriolic and a lot of people stayed home and their votes matter. Im focused on how to bring this together. I cant tell what will happen in michigan. Senator sanders is in my district a lot. When i leave here he is in my hometown of dearborn, doing a big rally in ann arbor with all the young people into a townhall with all of you in my district monday night with fox. I suspect he may when my district but statewide, joe biden will be arriving on monday. A lot of members of the black caucus are doing surrogate work. It will be competitive in the state. At the end we have to come together. I know both men. Im focused on november because i think the future of this country is at stake, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press are all issues we have to really worry about, making sure policy decisions are being based on scientific evidence. That is what i think this election is about. Charles do you think if bernie does not win michigan and suffers more setbacks on tuesday, how does the party get him into the fold while not adopting his signature platform . When we say get into the fold, everybody has to keep talking and coming together. Im not going to give up. My father in law introduced the first universal healthcare bill in the early 40s, medicare in 65 because of that. We will keep that going. Im committed to keep it going but i will work hard for whoever the candidate is and if you dont have vision you will never get there. Back here in new york the number of coronavirus cases continues to jump overnight, we saw a big move. What are officials doing to get this under control . That is the question next. Charles the number of coronavirus cases in new york grows by the day. On friday was announced 22 cases to 44. Joining me now Nassau County<\/a> thank you for joining us. Your state, your county, three more cases overnight. A total of four cases in hempstead and all four people who tested positive, one man and 3 women are closely connected. Our Health Department<\/a>, county Health Department<\/a> on the front lines of dealing with this. The Health Department<\/a> jumped into action and starts a contact investigation. To track a persons life, people 5 to have a positive case, go through their context, go through their day and others who are deemed to be at risk the Health Department<\/a> will contact them directly and also in charge of the new monitoring guidelines. Charles what are the moderating guidelines, what they are doing is monitoring to that. If you have a country of concern or close contact with someone who came from a country of concern, and monitor that way. We have a few people who have compulsory monitoring and keeping track of and making sure they are sustained and staying isolated. Charles is there anything unique about where the person was in the first place . These are cases of community spread. We are not sure how the first person was tested positive who got it. The problem right now is community spread. People Walking Around<\/a> who have a virus, who dont know they have the virus. This is why these investigations are so important. People who are deemed at risk are isolated. Charles it is more contagious when you show the symptoms . It becomes sort of exponentially more contagious. A virus can be contagious at any time even when you are not showing symptoms this is a microscopic particle that has existed on planet earth for a few months. We are learning about it. There is a lot we dont know. If it is like a normal flu that cycles out seasonally or is similar. Charles we hope that is the case as we move forward. The best case as we learn more we make sure the public knows and theres a lot of anxiety around this and im encouraging a residents who at this point there is no reason to panic, go about your business, schools are not closed, take the train to work, the trains are making sure they are cleaning properly, buses the same thing, go about your life, go shopping, go to the restaurants, live your life and keep track and we will keep getting the message out. Wash hands, really rub them. If youre anxious, that is the best way to protect yourself. If you are sick dont go to the emergency room, stay home, call your healthcare provider. What is odd about this situation is Chuck Schumer<\/a> in 2017 when donald trump refers to judge robards as a socalled judge said Donald Trumps<\/a> marks were terrible and problematic, said it would cause a slowdown in the gore such nomination and here he is on the steps of the Supreme Court<\/a> by name attacking two sitting Supreme Court<\/a> justices. Over 4000 threats a year to federal judges across the country, the us marshals, in virginia, to manage these threats and we have a us senator, the majority leader attacking by name two us Supreme Court<\/a> justices is unbelievable and being from brooklyn is not an excuse. Charles feels like the culmination of a string of things out of the Democratic Party<\/a> from the election that changing everything including adding more Supreme Court<\/a> justices, limiting the power of judges, feels like they want to append the constitutional roots of our system because they didnt in the last election including the Supreme Court<\/a>. It makes you wonder if Mitch Mcconnell<\/a> stood on the steps of the Supreme Court<\/a> and attacked Ruth Bader Ginsburg<\/a> and later kagan what would Chuck Schumer<\/a> be saying, should increase the number of justices, Hillary Clinton<\/a> got electoral Bernie Sanders<\/a> gets elected. Clearly it is not the same rules that apply to Chuck Schumer<\/a>, no big deal. Mitch mcconnell does it and that is the fundamental issue. We know human beings read newspapers. What are your thoughts about that . Nobody is free from complaints, the president said things about judges, should have said those things. Americans are keeping a close eye on the coronavirus as it continues to spread this morning. So far there are more than 300 confirmed cases and at least 17 deaths here in the United States<\/a>. Meanwhile, vicepresident pence will be meeting with ceos of cruise ships in a few hours to discuss the situation. This, as 3500 people are still stranded on that ship off the coast of San Francisco<\/a> because passengers are testing positive for the virus. Clauda cowan now with the details. Thats right, 19 crew members and two passengers have tested positive for the coronavirus, that means that the grand princess will not be coming back here to its home port as planned today. But theres still no word on where or when this ship will dock. Take a look at the map. You can see the ship continues to circle about 30 miles off the coast of San Francisco<\/a>, with coast guard vessels alongside. And at some point this weekend it will head to a commercial port well away from other cruise ships and passengers as everyone is clear and tested. Instead they could have to stay on board like the diamond princess in japan or if theyll be taken off the ship. We know the coronavirus sickened several people on the ships previous cruise between San Francisco<\/a> and mexico, including a california man who died last week. Vicepresident mike pence says those who are infected now probably caught the virus on that earlier cruise. Its very likely that the crew on the grand princess was exposed on two different two different outings, but we will be testing everyone on the ship. We will be quarantining as necessary, but with regard to the 1100 member crew, we anticipate that they will be quarantined on the ship, will not need to disembark. 46 people were tested on thursday after diagnostic kits were airlifted to the ship. 19 testing positive, 24 tested negative. One test was inconclusive and the testing really has just begun with more than 3,000 people on board stuck in their cabins. Passengers have free movies and wifi and menus to order room service, but it is a gloomy day here in San Francisco<\/a> and the mood fits. Charles, we now have 69 confirmed covid19 cases here in california. Charles thank you, claudia. Now to health and human secretary tom price, how we are on how the country is handling this. Sir, tom, thanks for joining us. Thank you, charles to be with you. Charles and youve played many roles in the federal government including hhs. Your assessment thus far of, you know, lets separate the noise, media noise, political noise from whats actually is happening and where we should be going. Well, thats really important because this coronavirus, although new and different, isnt unique. As you know and as many of your viewers know, this is the same family of viruses that causes the common cold, the same family of viruses that caused the sars and the mers epidemic, differe different, it has some unique features that those that are sick and able to spread the disease and thats a problem for the Public Health<\/a> officials. The Public Health<\/a> officials at state level. Local level, federal level, they know how to handle Infectious Diseases<\/a>. There is a lot of uncertainty, but there ought not to be fear. Well get through this. Charles do you think as we get more information particularly on death rates and mortality rates, when the World Health Organization<\/a> give their numbers, they cobble them in with iran. And their health is not to ours, not to diminish the loss of American Life<\/a> or life in general, but as we see this data coming in, it feels theres a large swath of American People<\/a>, working aids folk infact arent succumbing to the virus. Thats correct, 80 who get this in the United States<\/a> will get through without significant challenge at all like the flu, like the cold. There are some who will be hospitalized and some will need further treatment, but it looks like the mortality rate, death rate is somewhere between 1 and 3 , but again, its a problem because there are individuals who are asymptomatic, dont have symptoms at all yet have the infection who will never cross the paths of those numbers that you talk about. Now to put this in context. As people know, there are over 22 million cases of the annual flu, the seasonal flu and in the United States<\/a> this year there have been over 18,000 individuals who have died because of that seasonal flu. So, its important to put all of this in that context and again, allow the Public Health<\/a> individuals to do their jobs. Charles american businesses are rapidly telling employees and workers to stay home and of course, you know, conventions haven about cancelled, gatherings have been canceled. Thats right. Charles is this the right amount of caution . Is there too much . Is there an abundance of caution. I guess we always want to err on that side, but there are implications. You want to err on the side of caution, but i think theres significant overreaction to this, thats not to say that this isnt a challenge because there is. But this is where folks need to listen to the local, state and federal Public Health<\/a> officials, theyre the folks who ought to be defining exactly when things ought to be closed down. When we ought to move to virtual engagement from a communications standpoint, as opposed to otherwise. So, there are folks who are really smart about this and know their business extremely well who can really inform companies and others to make certain that we do respond in the most sober and calm manner, so that we all are able to get through this in the best way possible. Charles before i let you go. I have to ask you about the Health Care Program<\/a> na you are also involved in right now and id like for you, if you could, share that with the audience. Charles those are the kinds of headlines that worry people more, the mutation of the virus and yet, i saw a doctor on with lou dobbs last night, its not uncommon for viruses to mutate. Correct. Charles where are we right now . And its common to mutate, but mutate to what, if its to the vax vaccine thats developed, well wait and see. I listened to dr. Price. One thing we dont have the testing and for physicians to know what to do and when Public Health<\/a> officials decide to close schools or do something drastic because we dont have the information we need to make reliable decisions, and thats been a big problem. Really, inexplicable how it is weve failed to come up with a reliable, welldistributed test for this, this virus weeks and weeks and weeks after we should have. No one knows why, but its a problem. Charles i understand you had to get certain samples from china, i mean, theres a big string of events that have to happen before you go get there. But that part to your point were addressing millions of tests will go out. What the audience is probably more concerned about, i read in the National Science<\/a> review about the potential mutation and theyre saying two types, ltype and stype. And ltype is more dangerous. As january came that faded out and the reason they say is because of human intervention because of quarantines, which means that perhaps the more dangerous mutation of this is being addressed. I mean, are these the kind of drastic measures that we should implement just so that if there is a mutation, the more dangerous form of this virus doesnt spread . Yeah, sure. First of all, this comes from china. We need to everything needs to be confirmed and reconfirmed. China is not exactly known for its transparency and sharing with the World Community<\/a> although getting better. In the meantime, we have to worry, but the problem is if we end up with quarantining a lot of people or taking steps like closing schools and closing sporting events and big Group Gatherings<\/a> or Public Transportation<\/a> in a city like new york, were talking about extraordinarily disruptive were not there in your mind . Were not there. We could be there, but right now were not there. The public is right to be concerned and not panic. I totally agree with that. In the meantime theres a lot of confusion and concern, im telling you within the medical community so we have a lot of work to do, but we need those tests. Charles well get them. Charles, this coronavirus certainly affecting all kinds of businesses. Charles thank you very much. So all of these measures meant to protect us will have a negative impact on the economy. Which by the way, the latest jobs report shows was just an absolute gang busters is an understatement. 273,000 jobs, 730,000 the last three months. Whats going to happen with the overall economy now . Lets bring in our panel, and aaron gibbs and debra Deirdre Bolton<\/a> joining us at the table. A short walk. Charles you come on my show all the time on fox business, you were cautious with market valuations which might explain part why the sharpness of the pullback, but there are actions taken that will have a detrimental impact on the economy. The big question though is for how long. Right now most of wall street is looking at this lasting through until the end of the september, basically until Third Quarter<\/a> and were seeing that most expectations are that we start to return to normal towards december, but we definitely are seeing a big impact. In fact, if you look at the expected Profit Growth<\/a> for u. S. Corporations, its been cut by about twothirds. Going from about 10 to 3 1 2 , so thats a big cut. Were definitely expecting a slowdown. Again, this is temporary and so far, were still expecting a recovery and its not going into multiyear recession. Charles dan. Well, you know, my concern, charles, is more related to the economy overall than it is to the stock market. I agree with erin, that the market is going to come back. This is ultimately going to settle down and everybody stays calm. Were going to be fine. However, lets look at what Behavioral Changes<\/a> are going to come from, shall we say, the panic. Elon musk just says this coronavirus panic is dumb for what thats worth. I dont know if i agree with him, but bringing to light that peoples reaction right now may be a little overblown. So when we talk about the economy, to me, its about peoples confidence, its how they feel, and right now, day after day, not good news, more spread, more uncertainty, thats keeping people home. And whether some of these behaviors are going to continue, well have to see. You can look at historically again through the stock market and see how long investors remain fearful and in general, when you look at high volatility, high market days, it fairly lasts more than four months. We eventually develop a tolerance and come back and the specific stock markets, particularly yesterdays session, which in the last few minutes of trading, it was a remarkable rally attempt ahead of a weekend, which is unusual since this thing began. And a recession two negative quarters in a row. One thing for certain, january and february were monsters, when i say almost every single Economic Data<\/a> point that came out in the last three weeks was positive, including with this jobs report, and its not just 273,000 last month. 730,000 americans went back to work in the last 90 days. That is a huge, huge economic news. And cheering as well thats huge, that helps us as we deal with this uncertainty dan is talking about. It certainly does, but one of the best quips i heard and we know that the fed cut rates is first kind of intermeeting emergency intervention since the financial crisis, but as somebody quipped the fed doesnt have a vaccine. So, yes, we have these super strong underpinnings, well remind that jobs number was amazing on friday, but it did not account for, obviously, any of the coronavirus fears. You know, we know that Goldman Sachs<\/a> has said absolutely zero Profit Growth<\/a> this year. Charles as a worse Case Scenario<\/a> . That is the. Charles the baseline scenario. The fed cant cure the coronavirus, but can stave off a crisis or the negatives of a declining wealth effect. People may not go shopping today because theyre worried about getting a virus, but its about the demand not going away and that demand stays there you still want to buy an iphone and go somewhere if you think you have the money to do it. Plus the retailers are might. There are lines around the block for costco and walmart and theyre willing to go out for certain things. And the massive home sales, as the Interest Rates<\/a> go down and Mortgage Rates<\/a> go down, and the warmer when the up up from a year ago and to your point. Initial jobless claims on thursday declined. So right now, in terms of real economic impact, in the last week of this economy, fewer people filed for unemployment insurance, not more. At least on the business level, maybe people are being asked to work from home, but theyre not being laid off yet. I think youre absolutely right, charles. All the Economic Data<\/a> were getting to this point is tremendous. Where do we go from here . If were going to start seeing companies telling employees to stay home and not everybody can work from home, so the impact of that, should it become widespread is do we have people that are going to be losing some of their disposable income and then they dont have that money to spend. Of course democrats overall hoping for a big turnout in michigan and other primary states this tuesday after a big turnout on super tuesday. So what does this enthusiasm mean for the general election in november . Theyre back, lee carter, nathan ruben and kelly jane torrance. Let me start with you, nathan. The Democratic Party<\/a>, bigger turnouts, but there is one, one glaring red flag, the youth turnout hasnt lived up to the hype. Well, the youth turnout as a share of the electorate certainly has not increased. In overall numbers turnout is up across the board, whether thats the trump effect or whether theyre excited to vote for the democratic candidates. We did see on super tuesday, the Political Revolution<\/a> that Bernie Sanders<\/a> was hoping for turned up, but they voted for the other guy. Now up to 1. 3 voters in the democratic primary this past tuesday. And joe biden won that state by 30 points. Charles we should point out, kelly jane, as well the turnout for President Trump<\/a> has been higher than it was when president obama was the incumbent. In other words, there seems to be an equal amount of enthusiasm on the republican side which is interesting, listen, many of these states theres only one person to vote for and still in texas i think more people turned out for the Republican Party<\/a> than they did for the democrats. Yes, i found at that fascinating, charles. I know a lot of nevertrumpers as they describe themselves and they thought that there was really a chance that somebody could primary President Trump<\/a> and win. Well, bill weld, the former Massachusetts Governor<\/a> is still on the ballot, joe walsh and they dropped out. They dont need to vote for President Trump<\/a>, he is going to win the republican nomination again, but the fact that there is interesting. We might see less of that in michigan though because you dont have to be a registered republican or democrat, you can vote for whichever ballot you decide to pick so some people may want more say since it matters more in the democratic one, but i think that people are underestimating some of that enthusiasm for President Trump<\/a> among republicans. Charles here is the interesting thing, is that political expert, lee. Ive always been told that people vote for something rather than against something. Yes. Charles and it feels like the overarching theme in the Democratic Party<\/a> is to vote against President Trump<\/a>, that somehow that one particular goal will unite a really disparate party. Weve seen on display how far apart they are on issues. Charles, youre getting on something because ive never seen an election people are generally voting for something and in 2016 voted for donald trump, voted for barack obama before that. This is not the same kind of thing. When you look at polling numbers, about 40 decide in the last 24 hours, who would would vote far, in virginia, 60 the last 24 hours who theyre going to vote for. That doesnt mean theyre an enthusiastic voter, when you look at the virginia numbers, North Carolina<\/a> numbers, this is a very energized Democratic Party<\/a> and almost doesnt matter who theyre voting for, theyre voting against donald trump. Now, layer that against the republicans who are going out in record numbers and voting in the primary as well for donald trump right now and in the case youre talking about when they dont need to show up and showing up 25 more than when barack obama was incumbent. So weve got energized on both sides. Charles its intriguing that this political dynamic is occurring in the primary season. Its fascinating. I dont think that we should underestimate biden supporters, we shouldnt say that biden is going to be an easy candidate to beat for President Trump<\/a>. They have a very, very energized support base. Charles can he stay there, if bernies voters theyre less likely perhaps to now, but the look at the brokered convention, will they show up . You dont have to lose a lot of bernie bros for the election. And President Trump<\/a> has a lot of advantages being the incumbent. No matter whether youre joe biden or Bernie Sanders<\/a>, there are democrat ics who say they would never vote for Bernie Sanders<\/a> and others that wont vote for biden. Charles in the sweeping win, you need the left side of the party and you need the bernie bros to participate and i dont know how their feelings are going to be assuaged between now and the election. Its a great question. In 2008 we had a heated primary between Hillary Clinton<\/a> and barack obama at the time and in the end we came together and i think weve got to find a way to coalesce and unite whoever the nominee is by the time we get to november. Its also going to be interesting to see what happens with the sanders supporters. You remember 10 to 12 of Bernie Sanders<\/a> if you can get to 15 voting for donald trump, thats going to make it harder for biden in the key states he needs to like michigan, like ohio, like pennsylvania. He has to win the states. Charles and quick, in less than a minute. Kelly jane, i still think this youth inning is a problem for democrats. In texas 30 were over 65, and vermont 11 were over 30. And i think when they start with a woke party, the party of black people, hispanics and women and progressive and showing how progressive they were and its not working out that way. And you may see more youth turnout in michigan. Charles its interesting, all of these states on super tuesday not one state had more than 20 . We did not see that in the midterm, i dont know what went wrong. People have gotten thewes ac achl theyve got enthusiasm. Biden is smart to stick with who he knows who goes out to vote. Charles and protesters, is it time to rush secret service to all candidates on the trial. Folks, did you see this . Well, now some are calling for the secret service to protect the candidates and the agency says its looking into it, but should taxpayers be on the hook for this . If her intentions were different, the news story we could be talking about today could be different. That was really pretty frightening. Yeah, you know, i dont know that biden actually needs secret service, i think his wife is doing a pretty good job from everything that i could determine. But both of these guys are eligible right now to have secret service. All they have to do is ask. The secret Service Began<\/a> protecting major candidates immediately following the assassination of Robert Kennedy<\/a> back in 1968 and so each candidate has to meet certain benchmarks in order to qualify for secret service both sappeders and biden have done that, it is optional, however, its not mandatory, they dont have to have the protection, but they have to ask for it. So if they want it, theyve got to ask. Well, how does that work . Before super tuesday would joe biden have been eligible and the media written off . He was coming in fourth and fifth place in a lot of places, what would think he would qualify as a significant or major candidate . Charles, there are several things that a candidate is supposed to be able to qualify for, including matching funds, having entered in 10 different primaries and so on. However, there are ways around that. For example, barack obama was afforded secret Service Protection<\/a> almost two years before the actual election. So based upon the threat level and other factors, the candidate can actually receive protection prior to meeting those requirements. But in this case, again, both biden and sanders do qualify. Charles well, thats great to know and of course, onus on them to ask for it. I want to take this moment, secret service has this unsung job protecting so many people and things and its remarkable. Is it an evolving process . Because its hard for us to see where there may be glaring problems or issues, but you have to the secret service has to be in front of this. The secret service does such a great job, quite frankly, charles, because of the training they receive. The training is ongoing. It never stops. Everyone that has already been selected to be on one of these details has undergone weeks of training at the rally Training Center<\/a> in maryland. They are prepared, theyre ready to go, and they, quite frankly, are totally committed to the mission. In my view, however, the secret service should not be protecting candidates until the candidate actually becomes the nominee of their party. All of these candidates are more than able to pay for their own protection. And i really dont see that they being private citizens should be all of this protection should be footed for the taxpayer. It costs literally millions of dollars to protect these people. So do they need protection at this point . Probably. Should it be secret service, okay, maybe, as long as the candidate is willing to pay for that protection. They should be writing the secret service a check for this. Charles thats a fantastic point. Otherwise bringing in their own people. Charles a fantastic point. If you can spend 700 million on the losing candidacy, certainly, you can afford your own protection, all of them.
