There has always been an understanding if you will between the court and the Justice Department<\/a> because its so sensitive the Justice Department<\/a> will operate in good faith when theyre dealing with the court. And so the court gives maybe the Justice Department<\/a> more leeway maybe than it should. I have found in almost every case whether it was bush, obama, the Justice Department<\/a> dealt honestly and openly with the at least honestly with the fisa court. That was not done in this case. This is the exception to the rule. Bill you raised a lot of questions. I want to squeeze in a question about collusion, obstruction, any of that definitive based on the release of these documents. How long before intel officials, d. O. J. Can say this material can now be made public . Is that days or weeks away . Some may try. Again, i dont see anything at all in the fisa application that will damage national security. Thats a phony argument put out there. Maybe in some other documents theyre requesting there should be a name or two taken out but the majority of these documents should be made public and the fisa application my recollection having read them is everything should be made public there. If there is a specific objection they should raise it. Theyll try to slow walk it by claiming national security. Bill will we see it before the election . I would hope so. On the other hand you have kavanaugh, we have a rich record of people who testified about his character and his treatment of women to a rich, rich extent but he, despite not having any obligation to do so, has proclaimed his innocence. He hasnt just said they dont have enough evidence to show im guilty. He said i am innocent. Sandra your take is it has the hallmarks of a setup and you penned the oped on that. We are looking at lots of different things. I have a great cabinet. We have the greatest economy ever in the history of our country. So were very happy with the way things are running generally speaking. I dont think weve ever had an economy like this. They continue to come in. A lot of tremendous things but very importantly no missile testing, no nuclear testing. Now they want to go and put a bid in for the olympics. We have a lot of very good things going. Remember this, prior to my coming into office, a lot of people thought we were going it was inevitable we were going to war in north korea. This morning driving over i thought about going back five years ago to oklahoma with the tornado that was devastating. North carolina has this attitude we want the federal government to come in and well need them but were not waiting for you, well get the job done now. Weve seen that kind of spirit throughout the state and local level. Local Law Enforcement<\/a>, responders, sheriffs throughout the different counties are sending relief teams. Swift water rescue. Everybody jumped on board. There are people 2 1 2 to 3 hours inland there from new bern talking with these wonderful displaced people, you use the word shock. I think thats a very accurate description. Just trying to realize that they had to escape with just what they could hold in their arms. They dont know what they are going back to and when they can get back there. Were talking about tens of thousands of people that are in this predicament plus on top of that hundreds of thousands of people who still dont know when they can have access to power as you said, power is not energy is not underrated. Well continue to work with the crews. We have teams from 17 different states coming in to do utility work. Weve had help from 29 different states. We appreciate that. This is certainly a national incident. Any time we have such a hurricane of this magnitude with specifically the days after the flooding and some of the continued really suffering that were seeing. Bill i think about the elderly and you think about the poor. A lot of there is a lot of poverty in some of these small towns in eastern North Carolina<\/a> as you know. It makes it doubly tough for those people. Will you see the president today . Will you head to the coast and make it that far . We have not coordinated our schedules. Im 3 1 2 hours from the coast. Barzee is 72. Officials will help her relocate after completing her 15year sentence. It was a plea bargain in exchange for testimony against husband brian david mitchell. He got life for the repeated sexual abuse of Elizabeth Smart<\/a>. Smart claims that barzee remains a threat to her and the community because one, records show barzee refused Mental Health<\/a> treatment while in prison and secondly because she allegedly still carries a book of revelations that mitchell wrote about the time of the kidnapping. If she is Still Holding<\/a> onto that, which is in that book, in that book of revelations that he wrote, thats where he said to kidnap me and six other young women. If she is still carrying that around i think she is a big threat. Barzee will be on five years of supervised release. She is required to check in on a regular basis with her parole officer who can make unannounced visit to see if she complies with the conditions of release and registered as a sex offender, no alcohol. Investigation of a 36 year old allegation without specific references to time or location before professor ford will appear before the Judiciary Committee<\/a> is not about finding the truth but delaying the process until after the midterm elections. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell<\/a> sounds pretty calm at this stage. Im not concerned about attacking the nomination. Weve been meeting with the committee to agree to a process that is fair to the woman who is accusing here. Everybody can agree its a fair process. If professor ford does not change her mind it sounds like most republicans will be inclined to go ahead with the process, sandra. Sandra arguments that democrats are making right now. Democrats are suggesting that the republican colleagues are wushing things along trying to get this done in a hurry. Attorney for professor ford a background of the allegations would be smart before a partisan hearing before politics get involved. Judiciarys top democrat is what we wanted was an investigation carried out to look at the facts before there was a hearing. The republican majority is apparently not going to do that but based on what i know at this stage she is credible. Other democrats say their gop counterparts shouldnt be in such a rush. We should not be rushing to judgment with a sham hearing on monday that is designed solely to create a he said she said atmosphere assassinating her character. You heard the president a few moments ago using words touting good news when it comes to north korea and south korea and the summit happening there and tremendous progress. Are you comfortable with that assessment . Moving forward thats a step in the right direction. The fact that they are suggesting that they will be taking down one of their missile facilities, one of their testing facilities. Thats a positive step. An offer. The fact that he is suggesting he would have outside experts in to verify, thats a move in the right direction. Remember, the fact that we actually had a number of our Fallen Heroes<\/a> being returned, that was a substantive result of what the president has been able to accomplish with north korea. Were moving in the right direction. But we want to see things solid. We want to see the real results before we start claiming success. At this point its a lot better off than it was before the president started trying to negotiate with north korea. Bill you talk with a very cautious tone. We can all agree as to why. I wonder if north korea and south korea found two leaders who could actually move a process forward. If they submit a bid for the olympics in 2032. Create a railroad link. Remove security guards from the posts between north korea and south korea. No one on that Korean Peninsula<\/a> has ever talked like that before. That and the fact theyve indicated they want to have a formal end to the korean war. Thats a positive step as well. So things are moving in the right direction, but these can be derailed just as quickly as they can start to move forward. This is not going to happen overnight. But as long as were talking, thats better than being at war. Bill thats one topic. Sandra has another thats hot today in washington sandra were watching the latest with judge kavanaugh. It seems its a difficult thing for some of you to discuss because we just dont know what is going to happen next, whether or not we are going to see his accuser show up on monday and where this goes next. What do you want to see happen, senator . We want a process that the American People<\/a> feel comfortable with and one that members of the United States<\/a> senate feel comfortable with as well. Our role here is to vet judge kavanaugh to find out whether or not he is the right person to sit in a lifetime appointment to the bench. This man has already been through six separate f. B. I. Investigations beginning in the 1990s forward. He comes with an impeccable record to begin with. He has now been accused of inappropriate activity when he was a teenager. It has caught the attention of the nation. The individual who has made these accusations deserves to have an opportunity to be heard. I think chairman grassley has done an excellent job of trying to reach out under some very unique circumstances in which the democrats on this committee apparently had knowledge of these accusations for six weeks before they gave them to the rest of the committee and thats only after it was found out through news reports that these actually existed. Thats hardly an appropriate way to treat a chairman who has gone out of their way to try to work across the aisle in these hearings. I think the chairman has done a very good job of trying to be fair. Bill Lindsey Graham<\/a> is more blunt. This is what he said about the politics of washington you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes<\/a> to figure some of this out. The democrats knew about this for weeks. July, they never raised it in a timely fashion. They sat on it and never confronted judge kavanaugh. That says a lot about their tactics. Theyre the people that want to sink kavanaugh and get trump. You dont have to be that sharp to figure out there is something going on here. She will have her day monday if she chooses to come. Sandra do you think she is going to show up . It will be up to her. I know the chairman has offered to do this in private. He offered to do it in public if thats their choice. I know that senator collins had suggested that rather than having members of the committee ask the questions, to actually have outside counsel hired separately to come in and ask specific questions of both trying to find a way to make this as bipartisan as possible given our colleagues of the other side of the aisle havent seen fit to take that approach. Bill Mitch Mcconnell<\/a> had a meeting with senators yesterday. He delivered a message about an election thats in the offing 50 days from now. What do you think as things stand right now . Do republicans control the senate in 2019 . We control the senate right now about 5149. Well control it, i believe, next time around. A lot of American People<\/a> want to see us follow through and get our work done. That includes a budget with appropriations, includes strengthening defense and also includes honoring our commitment to actually bringing in qualified judges on both the federal bench as well as in the United States<\/a> Supreme Court<\/a> when the opportunity arises. Which candidate wanted to limit the ability of people to make a documentary film about her . Were getting these scare stories but there is no there there. The whole case is a lot of adjectives and references to tweets and comments but where is the fundamental attack on american institutions. It hasnt happened. Sandra the implications of that she discussed. The threat to american democracy on our midterm elections. If we dont have a very big rejection of those tendencies come in this midterm election, i think you will only see more of these attacks on our institutions, on our norms, on the rule of law that could do lasting damage. He has a job to manage the Justice Department<\/a> which upholds the constitution. Sandra i have breaking news in here. Well transition to Brett Kavanaugh<\/a> and george w. Bush just released a new statement in the wake of all this and he is saying quote, laura and i have known and respected Brett Kavanaugh<\/a> or decades and stand by our comments the night judge kavanaugh was nominated. A fine husband, father, friend and a man of the highest integrity. He will make a suburb justice of the Supreme Court<\/a> of the United States<\/a> and he referenced back to the comments he made when judge kavanaugh was nominated. In those comments he called him a brilliant jurist who has faithfully applied the constitution and laws throughout his 12 years on the d. C. Circuit. George w. Bush standing behind kavanaugh. You are seeing republicans in the senate who might have been on the fence getting behind him. If what is happening here as it appears to be that judge kavanaughs accuser, mrs. Ford, is not going to come forward and share her story given this opportunity, there is really not an argument to hold up this process because outside of her testimony, there is not any evidence to date. We spoke to an insurance guy who was here assessing the damage. But this is sewage water. This is very smelly water and the reason why im not going in deeper there are a huge incline. You can see how low the water is. Thats the problem, though, rivers are still cresting and it is still flooding areas. It might be sunny blue skies right now but the damage is prevalent. These homeowners will have to deal with this. A lot of people dont have power. It has improved since yesterday. Duke energy said yesterday there were over 300,000 people without power in North Carolina<\/a>, now its about 100,000. Things are improving on that end but the floodwater is not improving. You are still this is a major issue for a lot of people that are in the area trying to get to work because they need some source of revenue right now. It is very, very difficult for them to move around. And most importantly First Responders<\/a> as well. Bill the heartbreak is about to happen for so many who evacuated. Theyll find their homes all flooded out and the reality sets in. What do you do next . What happens then for all these victims . Exactly. A lot of i was in lumberton all day yesterday. People are concerned people wont move back to the county because theyre tired of getting flooded. A lot of these homes have been hit several times. This particular storm ended up not being a hurricane. It doesnt seem as exciting. Im not standing in blowing wind but the water has been a major issue for a lot of these homeowners. Now its a question of do you spend whatever savings you have left over to rebuild your home, reassess the damages and pay for that or do you change locations . A lot of these homeowners, including this home over here have evacuated at the moment. The water was two feet higher the past few days. They havent come back. It is deep over here. These guys need to think about how to pay for it. That has been a major issue for a lot of people we spoke to. They dont have the funds and dont know where theyll go. Over 10,000 people are still in shelters. Thats not including people that are sleeping on friends couches. Bill on and on it goes. And to all of the state and local leaders who have been really incredible partners throughout this response and recovery. There has been a lot of talent, a lot of work and talent. Hurricane florence was one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the carolinas, one of the most powerful and devastating storms ever to hit our country. To the families who have lost loved ones, america grieves with you and our hearts break for you. God bless you. We will never forget your loss, we will never leave your side. We are with you all the way. And to all those impacted by this terrible storm, our entire American Family<\/a> is with you and ready to help. And you will recover. Most importantly, we give thanks to the incredible First Responders<\/a>, including sheriffs, police officers, firefighters, our great cajun navy. They are all over the place. I put them up online and everybody loved it. Everybody loved it. They put themselves, all of them, in harms way. What theyve done to save precious lives of our citizens has been nothing short of incredible. Nearly 20,000 federal and military personnel are supporting the response efforts, along with southeast coast including brave men and women of North Carolina<\/a> and the national guard. Now of course were going to South Carolina<\/a> right after this and they have been incredible. I know youve worked and coordinated very well also with South Carolina<\/a>. Thats been a really great partnership. Together with state and local First Responders<\/a> they have oef assisted and rescued more than 3,000 people. So we want to thank you. I will say ive been watching the coast guard with all the helicopters lifting people off rooftops. An incredible job and we appreciate it. Thank you very much. More than 1. 6 million meals have been delivered to North Carolina<\/a> and more than 400,000 are ready in South Carolina<\/a> as soon as theyre requested. Were standing by with 400,000 meals in South Carolina<\/a>. Crews have restored power to over 1. 2 million customers already in north and South Carolina<\/a>. And the power is starting to go on as soon as the water goes down. They are meeting the demand incredibly well. I want to thank the Power Companies<\/a> and all the federal workers but also thank some of the Power Companies<\/a>. Theyve been very responsive. As soon as that water goes down, for the most part, people have power. In moments of despair, we witness the true character of the American People<\/a>. So true. Citizens all across our country rallied together to rescue the stranded, to protect the innocent, and to restore hope to families who have experienced tremendous and unbearable loss. I want to thank all of the people here today. A very special group of people. Very talented group of people, and we love working with you. It is an honor to work with you. Weve done a real job and we have to continue to do that real job because another phase is coming in right now. And were going to meet that phase just like we met phase one. Secretary nielsen, please. First i want to start by thanking you for your leadership. You respond [inaudible] the private sector, we have our congressional members speaking with officials. We are all working together as it should be and we greatly appreciate everyones partnership. If i could i would like to ask the administrator to give us a brief update where we are. Mr. President , as you know, a Disaster Response<\/a> like this takes all of us working together not just coordinating the federal government together, which has come together very well so far but takes all of us from neighbor helping neighbor to help people overcome what theyve been through. Ive been on the ground yesterday. Ill be on the ground through tomorrow to make sure i verify that were doing everything that we can right now. This event is not over. The rivers are still cresting. We have a lot of work to do when it comes to the life safety and sustainment mission but were also working on making sure that we stabilize all of the critical lifelines in regards to the infrastructure. It is all interconnected. We have to get the roads open and get the crews into the flooded areas and have to put a big focus on the Hazardous Materials<\/a> and health and capability of getting them up and running in every community. One of the things that is most important is that were already pushing forward our disaster survivor business teams into the field and the shelters. We need people to register with 1800621 fema. My job is made easier when a governor like Governor Cooper<\/a> and Mike Sprayberry<\/a>. They have been strong and capable partners. Thank you, sir. Governor, you said so well yesterday sunshine doesnt mean safety. Thank you, mr. President , for coming to North Carolina<\/a> as our rescue and recovery continues. Our rivers are still cresting and there is still danger for some people. Were hoping that they can get evacuated and that our First Responders<\/a> continue to make sure that people are brought to safety. Our state took a gut punch, mr. President , and our people are still reeling. Weve lost 27 lives officially so far and some more are under investigation. We mourn their loss. We have farmers who have lost significantly their crops. A lot of businesses are down. And of course people have lost their homes. We have about 10,000 people right now in shelters. I talked to one the other day who had a rescue out of an apartment in downtown wilmington and i will say this, all the way from firefighters in wilmington to our state responders, our national guard, and the United States<\/a> coast guard, there have been some heroic First Responders<\/a> to have saved lives. We are beginning the process of getting our feet under us, mr. President , and getting water and supplies, hot meals to people. We are beginning to clear roads, although we have a number of roads continuing to be closed, including parts of interstate 95 and interstate 40. You can imagine what that does to the commerce and people trying to get from one place to the next. We have a lot of power that has been restored but there are thousands of people who are still waiting to get their power back. I know that this state has a great economy, great education. We are a beacon in the south and weve weathered stops before. Weve never seen one like this. It has been epic, disastrous and widespread. It is a storm like no other. Were beginning the process, with your federal help and with our local county people, many of them are here today and we want to thank our local responders and all of the help that they have given to deal with people right there on the ground. But were starting to figure out how we will build back. We will do it in a smart and strong way. Ive been grateful for secretary nielsen and for admiral bertram. Thank you for your help with the coast guard and helping to rescue people. Brock long, along with alby lewis who has been here, theyre helping us right now significantly and were grateful. I have a great Emergency Management<\/a> director in Mike Sprayberry<\/a> and my secretary of public safety. Theyre all on board. Our adjunct general of the national guard, general lusk has been doing a fantastic job. The title 10 that weve invoked with our joint military exercise were grateful to the members of the u. S. Military who stepped up and helped us through this process. Mr. President , weve got a long road ahead in the days and months and even years ahead to make sure we build back where we need to be here in North Carolina<\/a>. And you are here and im asking you, sir, for your help every step of the way. All of these federal agencies are going to have to help us in cutting red tape and making sure we can be smart about this rebuilding process. We still understand people have a lot of immediate needs. That will be critically important over the next few days and weeks but long term rebuild i know the resiliency of north carolinians, we have an amazing state. Assets has enabled those at local, state and federal level to adjust what plans we might have had in place and deliver water and food and essentials in a way we could get into any community into this state. Without that level of collaboration we would have people that were in Serious Problems<\/a> much worse than today. And i am grateful for the federal component but i am as grateful for the way the state Emergency Management<\/a> folks and First Responders<\/a> who in some cases who are volunteers in local communities that had a boat aided their neighbors and thats whats great about this state. Weve made a request. Well be moving forward with trying to get the money in place for some of the initial recovery but then well work closely with the governor. Well continue to work with state and local authorities and thank the volunteers as well. The red cross and everybody else who have come together and congressman rouser, every one of the counties in his district that were affected. He has been working hard on the ground the entire time and this is when North Carolina<\/a>, america is at its best. This guy helps us to get them on the c130 and get them to the airport. Ive never seen a ceo of a hospital that was happier than our ceo of new hannover regional the other day. Your team is doing an invedible job. Housing is critically important. Infrastructure very important. I serve on the house transportation and infrastructure committee. Looking forward to rebuilding our infrastructure not just here post storm but we have to do a lot of premitigation work for the next storms. The storms will keep coming. The more we can prepare and clean out these rivers, these ditches, all the creeks and streams, theyre all stopped up. Thats part of the reason why we have such a monumental flood. My district as senator tillis said eight of my nine counties are completely almost completely under water. Major disaster areas. I think we building the infrastructure will be critically important. Housing is number one. Agriculture in my district huge component of this state. 87 billion industry. I see our commissioner of agriculture here in the audience. We have to have more than just a new farm bill. We have to have a real disaster package for agriculture as well. And then our beach communities. Our beaches, inlets and waterways are a key component of infrastructure in this country. Vital to tourism as my district. And i know youre familiar with wilmington and pender county, all these counties need a tremendous amount of help and i thank you and appreciate you being here and appreciate all the work of your entire team. Baby steps as we all mentioned. Although it happened overnight, the rebuilding is not going to be overnight but from the state, local and federal level well make it happen. Just the presence of everybody around this table will mean a whole lot with everybody affected from Hurricane Florence<\/a>. The confirmation process of judge Brett Kavanaugh<\/a> as high accuser calls for the f. B. I. To investigate her claims before she will testify. President trump is standing by his Supreme Court<\/a> pick. Fox news is told there wont be an f. B. I. Investigation. Lets bring in Eric Swalwell<\/a>, a member of the house intelligence and Judiciary Committee<\/a>s. You heard the president s comments as he was leaving for North Carolina<\/a>, what did you think . If the president wanted a full investigation, he would tell the f. B. I. As has been done in the past to look at these new claims. I dont understand the arbitrary deadline on this confirmation. Sandra go back to your initial response. What is it that you want the f. B. I. To investigate . Well, what they have investigated before, whether it was this nominee or whether it was with Clarence Thomas<\/a>. They reopened that investigation to interview this victim, to interview other people who were involved at the party and to interview judge kavanaugh. Sandra let me tell you the reasons which a highly placed Law Enforcement<\/a> people tells john roberts at fox news. Three reasons, there cannot be a criminal investigation. There is no crime alleged. Where the statute of limitations has not run. There are no allegations of a federal crime. The only investigation the f. B. I. Does is a Background Investigation<\/a>. Hold on. Youre confusing what the f. B. I. Does. They conduct Background Investigation<\/a> for nominees. Six background checks hes had. There is new information now that has come forward as there was in the Clarence Thomas<\/a> hearings and they reopened that. That takes the president to order it. Now, i understand why a president who has 13 credible Sexual Assault<\/a> allegations against him may not want to order somebody to investigate a judge he nominated with a Sexual Assault<\/a>. Sandra lets get to what senator Lindsey Graham<\/a> is saying about this. And democratic tactics on all of this. He says, quote, requiring an f. B. I. Investigation of a 36 year old allegation without specific references to time or location before professor ford will appear before the Judiciary Committee<\/a> is not about finding the truth but delaying the process until after the midterms elections. Again, that is confusing and standing on process and ignoring a substantive, credible allegation. Do we want a judge on the Supreme Court<\/a> if this is true . I dont understand the argument that even if this is true, its expired beyond some arbitrary fantasy deadline so judge kavanaugh sandra i think everybody agrees, even you just heard the president say i want to hear her. He thinks it would be wonderful if she appeared before the Judiciary Committee<\/a>. She said i want to hear her story. He is being very clear on that. I have worked as a prosecutor with Sexual Assault<\/a> victims. This woman has had Death Threats<\/a> placed against her. She didnt sleep in her own bed last night and asking that other witnesses also be interviewed and she doesnt have to sit at the same table and just five days with the judge that she has made this allegation against. That we have a process here that is responsible and shows dignity toward this victim. Sandra youre hearing from both sides of the aisle they want her to be heard. Kellyanne conway said she should not be ignored. Whats the rush . Sandra thats a big question why the timing of all this and it came before the vote. Sandra bringing the allegations forward. I want to finish with this. The wall street Journal Editorial Board<\/a> this morning. The main democratic goal is postpone the vote after the midterm. It would spare democrats have having to take a difficult confirmation vote. If dems take the Senate Majority<\/a> theyll insist on no vote until the new senate convenes in january. If the republicans rush through a nominee i can promise you that Democratic Senators<\/a> will look at those allegations and if judge kavanaugh lied under oath you could see a judicial impeachment. Well, i think you can trust that there is measurable progress and the difference here with whats going on versus like what happened with iran, iran everything was behind closed doors and there was a point at which the Prior Administration<\/a> accepted what iran was willing to give and said we have a deal even though i personally believe we should have gone further, which is no nukes forever, that kind of stuff and also their behavior in the region. What were seeing play out publicly here is that process of negotiation. North korea said were willing to look this. Its a major step. Im sure the administration will not do this. Whats important for us to say thats a good step, thats not the end state. Whats the next step . The next step until we get to a point where we have a verifiable nuclearfree north korea for all into our future. And this is a good process but there is no doubt kim jongun would stop right now if he felt that the pressure was off. We have to leave the pressure on. Bill here is a tweet from president earlier today. In the meantime no rocket or nuclear testing. Also north and south korea will follow joint bid to host the 2032 olympics, very exiting. More on the list than that. When chairman kim says we need a reciprocal action on behalf of the United States<\/a>. If he closes a Nuclear Facility<\/a>, what would he expect from the United States<\/a> in return . I dont think frankly the chairman should expect anything further from us right now. Would not normally do according to President Trump<\/a> and for the first time today as he was leaving for North Carolina<\/a> he publicly indicated that he believes kavanaughs side of the story. Listen here. President trump the f. B. I. Has been very involved with respect to Justice Kavanaugh<\/a>. They know him very well. Theyve investigated him i guess six times and investigated him for this hearing. Look, if she shows up and makes a credible showing, that will be very interesting and well have to make a decision. But i can only say this, he is such an outstanding man, very hard for me to imagine that anything happened. Its unclear whether ford will attend the hearing scheduled for monday in the senate Judiciary Committee<\/a>. In a statement her attorney said her worst fears have materialized and been the target of vicious harassment an Death Threats<\/a>. The hearing was scheduled for six short days today and questions Law Enforcement<\/a> sources tell fox news there is nothing in this case for the f. B. I. To investigate. There is no allegation of a federal crime. The statute of limitations on any local crime ran out a long time ago and the duty of the f. B. I. In these cases is to find information and then provide that information to the white house and that information is already known. Bill more on this with i was chief nominations counsel during president bushs second term and in this role i worked on the confirmation process for alito and roberts and scores of other federal appointees to the bench. Appellate and District Courts<\/a> and nominees to the Justice Department<\/a>. Bill you would know how the background process works, right . Absolutely. Every one of these nominations there is a big part of it that the public doesnt see because its confidential and done within the senate is the Background Investigation<\/a> and the background review. I have to say that the senate and American People<\/a> should understand this. The senate has now a multidecade tradition of handling sensitive allegations, confident nallly, carefully, in this Committee Process<\/a> thats bipartisan that takes the politics out of it and not in front of cameras and involves republicans and democrats working together to assess the veracity of allegations like this which do come up. To me this is deeply disappointing that Senate Democrats<\/a> chose to not use that process. They sat on an allegation for two months and put it out at the last minute. Which i think is not fair to either the accuser or the nominee or to the process. Im personally very worried that the senates confirmation process may be harmed by this type of political circus. Bill how so . It has worked so well for decades because its worked on trust, on i always trusted that my democratic counterpart would treat allegations carefully and seriously and not attempt to weaponize them or politicize them to use them as a smear against the nominee. We worked together in good faith. When allegations were deemed to be credible nominations would be withdrawn or not moved forward. And when we deemed them to be not credible or not credible enough nominations would be moved forward. It was the judge ultimately of the senators based on the record we developed. What is happening bill go ahead. I didnt mean to interrupt you. What is happening now in public is what the protocols were there to avoid. Bill a very interesting guest. What democrats are saying, however, is that the f. B. I. Needs to investigate. Does it . They misunderstand or misrepresent what the f. B. I. Does. The f. B. I. s role in this process so to essentially surface allegations like this for the senate. They give the senate and white house a big file on a nominee with records of all the people theyve talked to and all the information they gathered on a nominee. Its to the senates investigators to investigate anything concerning in that file. The f. B. I. Makes no conclusions. It is not an investigation in that sense. They serve things up for the senates investigators to consider and for the senate to weigh along with all the other things on whether a nominee should be confirmed. Bill a couple of things you and the viewers were here that the f. B. I. Investigated the anita hill matter years ago. They were both federal employees when the allegation was leveled and it was right to investigate that. I dont know if you believe that or not. But is that the case . As you answer that question, what democrats say is she doesnt want to sit in the same room as Brett Kavanaugh<\/a>. Does she have to if you have a private interview behind closed doors . She absolutely does not. I dont think anyone was ever proposing she would have to sit in the same room with him at the same time. The senates investigators or senate in an open hearing are capable of speaking to one witness at a time and thats exactly what they would do in a situation like this. And i think far too much has been made of the anita hill story. The f. B. I. Conducted a couple of interviews, did not conduct a full blown investigation or anything like that. The Senate Already<\/a> has the story of dr. Ford and the story of judge kavanaugh as well as denials from a couple of other folks who were supposed to be eyewitnesses or at the purported event back in the 80s. Bill final question. Does she show up on monday . What happens . I cant say that. Theyre serious allegations she has raised about a nominee to a very important office. I know that the senate would seriously consider anything she had to say and would accommodate her proceed durally. Need not in in public and with the nominee. I hope the president does fire a bunch of people. He needs to go through the federal government and give a lot of people some pink slips. People that have been disloyal and tried to undermine him. People in the deep state who have done everything they humanly can do to disrupt his duly elected president. Hillary, i agree with you in that regard. Sandra how about her prediction that President Trump<\/a> will be, quote, even more uncontrollable and unaccountable following the results. Lets look at some things he has done in a year and a half. He has cut taxes. He said he would do that. He moved to embassy to jere us liam. He said he would do that. He changed the nature of the middle diplomacy. He said he would do that. Made significant strides with north korea. He said he would do that. He got rid of the iranian deal. He did that. He created the largest flow of new jobs in the history of the country especially for minorities and women and younger people. So i guess if her question is he might continue doing that stuff, why wouldnt we want him to . Sandra here she is talking about the erosion of u. S. Institutions under President Trump<\/a>. What im worried about is that these authoritarian tendencies that we have seen at work in this administration with this president , left unchecked, could very well result in the erosion of our institutions to an extent that weve never imagined possible. Sandra seems like a dire warning coming from the former secretary of state. The same secretary of state who tried to pass on the narrative it was a video that created benghazi. This is the same administration that went after reporters like james rosen and his parents and wiretapped the associated press. This is the administration that used the irs and d. O. J. To send swat teams into gibson guitar with fully automatic weapons putting secretaries on their face on the floor because they didnt use the right wood for the necks of guitars. How dare she talk about authoritarianism . This is the same administration that weaponized the d. O. J. And f. B. I. And her campaign gave 9 million to create a phony story and get wiretap surveillance and investigations and ultimately try to take the election away from President Trump<\/a>. I mean, the fact that she can say these things. Of course, she can only say them with rachel maddow. Sandra she can say these things and she is. Does it help or hurts her party . Well, im sure she is doing everything she can to fire up her base. It is all the more reason that common sense conservatives, people who are committed to the constitution, they cannot sit at home in november. They absolutely must go out and vote. Even if they dont necessarily care for President Trump<\/a>, i like to think they might. But if they dont they need to care about their country and need to make sure you dont have the chuck shaoumers of the world, the Nancy Pelosis<\/a> and Maxine Waters<\/a> of the World Running<\/a> our congress. Thats a dangerous thing for our democracy because for the simple reason, its not about their politics. When you dont accept the results of an elections. The democrats have not. They have refused to accept an election result, that is the danger to democracy. Sandra the former governor Mike Huckabee<\/a> good to have you on the program and good to see you. Bill we continue to watch the president move about in eastern North Carolina<\/a>. He will show up at a local church doubling as a Distribution Center<\/a> in new bern, North Carolina<\/a>. You probably heard that town a lot over the past week. It was hard hit by flooding and the evacuation of so many. Brian yenis is in new bern at a Distribution Site<\/a> that looks good all things considered. It is perhaps the best news a lot of those folks there have gotten in some time. How does it look . I cant hear you now but were at Temple Church<\/a> in new bern, North Carolina<\/a>. This is where the president s motorcade just pulled up right over there and you can see the line of volunteers stretched out here that are waiting to meet the president of the United States<\/a> here. Right now weve been here all day. These are all volunteers from the baptist church. As a matter of fact the North Carolina<\/a> baptist Men Organization<\/a> or baptists on a mission. Theyve been here all week long giving out 20,000 meals a day. Right now they have some hot dogs and stuff coming up. You can see the president , this is actually the White House Pool<\/a> that is running ahead. This was a lastminute stop on this trip. We saw secret service run over here and start wanding everybody in the last 15 minutes. Nobody knew he was coming to this stop. These folks very, very excited. Again some 20,000 meals are given out of here. This is really an organization that has some 10,000 volunteers spread throughout the entire state. They arent only offering meals. Here we go, they are walking down now. There is the president of the United States<\/a>. There is President Trump<\/a> waving to all the volunteers. Again, these folks come from all around the state. To volunteer here. We spoke to some folks, the person who is actually in charge of this Organization Effort<\/a> here at Temple Church<\/a> who lives in new bern. He has donated really volunteered his time to help out these folks despite the fact he has no power and his house is as well in peril. Weve seen folks here all day long. Again anything from vegetable lasagna to cookies to hot dogs and people have been driving through to pick up these meals for the last three days. People just dont have power. They have no means of warm food and these folks have been here to make sure that despite everything that everyone is going through, that they have a warm meal to come home to. A lot of these meals have also been delivered to hardhit neighborhood throughout North Carolina<\/a> on American Red Cross<\/a> vehicles and so weve seen that from this Distribution Center<\/a> as well. Folks come here for meals but also meals are delivered to hardhit areas. Some people just dont have the fuel to make the trip to come here to pick up their meals or their supplies and then to go back home. They do the service of delivering them in those neighborhoods. As you can see, the president there shaking hands there with some of the volunteers. We have some folks in the way here. The white house media pool is there. The truck, by the way, that this food is coming from is the largest food truck one of the largest ever built. A 40foot semi. Thats what these folks are working out of all day. 1,000 feet of kitchen space and they are cooking these meals nonstop. They have them ready for 11 30 for lunch and for 5 00 at dinner. Weve seen people of all ages, those of retiree age, children, full blown families. Again, these are the Southern Baptists<\/a> of North Carolina<\/a>, a very large, tight knit community. The president looks like he is going to look at some of the food there thats being served. We know on the lunch menu again its hot dogs and green peas. We have a line of cars ready to get this food. This is what this is, a drivethru pickup. The first warm meal many of these folks will be having for the day. There is the president over there saying hi to all these again amazing volunteers. This food truck has been around since he is talking to the folks. You can see that he is moving pretty fast. I think he realizes and recognizes there are folks waiting to get their food for the first time and we will start seeing cars move up to pick some of this food up. We may even see the president serve some food now. A vehicle is about to pull up. Again, some of these folks can make the trip out here. They have enough fuel but may not have enough power at home to go cook their meals and why theyve made it all the way here. Well see the president give out some meals now. Bill good work down there. Brian down there on the scene in North Carolina<\/a>, the Distribution Site<\/a>. Well hang with it for a moment. Sandra he is helping hand out lunches. The second stop on his tour since he has gotten on the ground there. He is in new bern, North Carolina<\/a>, specifically at a local church doubling as a Distribution Center<\/a>. The church is located near the base there. But the president felt this was incredibly necessary to go down and thank all these volunteers for the hard work that they are doing. He commented earlier at that briefing. So much more work left to be done in this area. The president is on the ground. Bill the fly over when you see the widespread damage in the eastern part of the state. It goes on forever. Some of the rivers have yet to crest at their highest point. Some have reached the point when you think about Cape Fear River<\/a>. 35 feet over its banks. Lets see if we can pick up a little sound. We were hoping to get more than just somebody saying back, back, back as she move folks away from the caravan of cars coming in. Sandra you see the North Carolina<\/a> governor there, roy cooper. He has been traveling on the ground since the president arrived. You were commenting earlier on just the fantastic job that this bill i tell you what, even going back to a week ago he has been out there almost every hour of every day. A lot of respect from the people there in North Carolina<\/a> that he is trying to take care of. I think also for the commanderinchief and president to be there today is really a shot in the arm for people who have needed to be lifted up and have their spirits carried through and also to know that the federal government has their back and they need a lot of help right now for so many. Sandra since the president arrived there as you can see he is handing out lunches. This is where our reporter has been stationed all day. Making hot dogs. A warm meal to many folks who havent had one. New bern one of the hardest and first hit areas from Hurricane Florence<\/a> as the president arrives. He is talking to folks and taking pictures with many and shaking hands. I guess its fair to say a welcome moment for folks who have been through hard times. Bill so much of the electricity and power is out. The sun is back out. It is steamy mid afternoon in eastern North Carolina<\/a>. Without that power and the air conditioning it is very uncomfortable. Think about the heartache for so many people who left their homes and rivers and see so many houses underwater. Come back to a life they left in a much different state. And now they are facing an uncertain future for so many. Sandra another cool note that came in from one of the print reporters that during his briefing with his first stop. This is his second there at the marine air station cherry point. The president asked a state official how is lake norman doing and assured it was doing fine and he said i love that area. I cant tell you why but i love that area. The Trump National<\/a> gulf shores near charlotte, North Carolina<\/a>, the president taking keen interest in thanking all of those volunteers that you see behind you there helping folks get a warm meal and update at the briefing a short time ago, bill. 1. 6 million meals have been delivered so far. Many more are getting handed out. Bill lake norman is beautiful in the charlotte area. A little hug from one of the young men. Can i give you a hug . Thats what happened. This is unbelievable compared to matthew. Referring to a hurricane two years ago that swamped the region. Nothing like this. Sandra you know, without so many shouting to stay back, can we hear them . Hands around another child there im not sure if thats one that asked for a hug one did a short time ago and the president continues to hand out a warm meal to those folks who are pulling up and many desperately in need of one without electricity for days. Bill thats what he was asking too. Do you have the power back . Thats a long way to go for so many. Overnight there were two more deaths reported in South Carolina<\/a>. Apparently two detainees being transported. Two women who drowned. That was under investigation. But the problems continue with high water and these rescue teams plucking so many from the waters from homes and cars. North carolinas governor pleading with so many just to be patient. Really tough to do, you know, the governor admits many roads are dangerous and hazards are possible. The floodwaters and got about 10,000 people in shelters. Once you leave your property and land and want to come back and check it out. For so many parts of that state its just not possible. Still too dangerous. Sandra this is the president s second stop of the president s five stop tour. We dont know the specific stop until he gets there. This, of course, was new bern before. This Cherry Point Marine<\/a> corps air station where we heard from those that are traveling with him, including North Carolina<\/a> senators burr and tillis. South carolina senators scott, tim scott and Lindsey Graham<\/a> are traveling with him as well as well as of his team mic mulvaney, mcmahon, secretary nielsen among others. We have heard them with the updates as well. Brock long gave an update. Said the rivers are still cresting, which was a warning that there are still many days, tough days ahead. Bill also got word at sunrise that one road has been open officially in the wilmington, North Carolina<\/a> which really was the epicenter of the storm. The eye passed over that area. And as it came on shore and wilmington surrounded by low lying rivers and cape fear someone of them. Little river down there, back up into lumberton, North Carolina<\/a>. Rivers come from the atlantic. All that water gets pushed up there and comes back out then. Changing tide. High tide, low tide, back to high tide again. The water continues to creep everywhere. Sandra pretty neat site asightas the president continues to hand out meals. The governor of North Carolina<\/a> said our people are still reeling, lives have been lost and farmers have lost everything. Possibly a little bit of a bright moment here.
