David and explained about iran before takeoff. Our own david spunt is at the white house. Good morning, laura. The president held a long q a on the lawn of the white house, for about 25 minutes or so he talked on several different topics. Weve got word from the white house that the president is at camp david. He will be meeting with advisors this weekend to talk about that iran policy. Now, speaking about that iran policy, the president called off iranian air strikes in spite of increased pressure and increased tensions with tehran. They shot down an unmanned drone. He received intelligence that 150 people would be killed and he said yesterday killing 150 people for iran shooting down an unmanned drone did not make sense. I asked him if hed meet with irans leadership up to the ayatollah, he said its important to have dialog, that its important to do. So, listen to what the president said about meeting with iranian leadership. Very important to me so well start all over. We could have a deal with them very quickly if they wanted to. Its up to them. But if iran wants to become a wealthy nation again, become a prosperous nation, well call it lets make iran great again. Does that make sense, make iran great again, okay with me, but theyre never going to do it if they think in five or six years they will have a nuclear weapon. He said several times he wants dialog. They mentioned sanctions, but they didnt seem to be aware when he talked about sanctions yesterday. On a completely different topic, he responded to the allegations made by author e. Jean carroll. She says that he assaulted her at a department store. He put out a statement saying he never met her in his life. She included a photo of her, her exwife, himself and his wife ivana and i asked him. I have no idea, theres a picture were shaking hands it looks like at some kind of event, i have my coat on. I have my wife standing next to me, and i didnt know her husband, but he was a newscaster. But i have no idea who she is. So President Trump talking about several topics here on the south lawn, again, he is at camp david right now, a place hes only really been a handful of time since hes taken over here at the white house, but talking about that iran strategy. President trump says in the end, hes hoping dialog turns out to be the key. Laura, leland. David spunt at the white house. Leland and with that we bring in california congressman garamendi. Good to see you. Make iran great again, what do you think of that . I dont know, im just going to take a deep breath. [laughter] what next . Were still working on making America Great again and weve got a lot of things to do. I just think that its time for all of us to settle down, get a clear policy and clear goals and clear objectives in mind and then set the pace to do that. Leland boy, a lot has changed since you and i talked on thursday night at about 11 00. I know. I dont know what to say here. Its the Administration Needs to really settle down. They need to get their key people in place. Right now, the entire department of defense is in transition. Theres some excellent people there. Theyre leaving. New excellent people are coming in, theyre not exactly in place yet. We have time to retaliate. We have time to put whatever pressure is necessary on. The president has had what he calls the maximum Pressure Campaign underway, which in part, i think, was part of what has led to these various escalations by iran. Yes, always go to negotiations. Theres plenty of time later. There are a lot of problems with iran, not the least of which is the efforts, the work theyve done for more than 30 years now with various terrorist organizations in the area. Their nuclear ambitions, apparently theyre resorting those, now that the jcpoa, at least the United States has pulled out of that. So, yeah, theres a long path out ahead in an extremely important situation here and we need thoughtful about it. Leland as the president noted earlier he has now taken criticism from both sides, a lot of criticism from both sides, the people on your same side of the aisle. Take a listen to what he had to say and then well get your thoughts. Everybody was saying im a war monger and now they say im a dove, and i think im neither, you want to know the truth. Im a man with common sense and thats what we need this this country is common sense. Leland does the president have a point, that at least in the eyes of the democrats he cant seem to do anything right . Well, i think the problem here is he talks too much. The kind of action that he took, i think, is appropriate. I think that an immediate retaliatory strike, which we call kinetic, which is basically things that go boom, had not been completely thought out and this next effect, we take a strike and then what does iran do, back and forth. So, yes, he did the right thing by calling by not proceeding, but i think he did the wrong thing by talking too much. These are things that you need to keep close to your vest. Holds your cards close and then have a clear plan of where you need to go and how you might get there. Taking into account the second effects of what happens. Leland when president obama talked about the red line in syria and then pulled back, you had different thoughts about that, as things went on. But nevertheless, you point out, you say look, the president came to the right conclusion and you say you agreed with him in his decision not to strike. Is there a reason to sort of take a breather and say, okay, the president did the right thing for a day are rather immediately jumping, theres too much chaos and the defense departme department, et cetera . The facts are what i said. The action he took should have been done quietly. There are other things that need to happen. Youve got to get your allies in line and when you say, i want to understand, when you say he should have done a quietly. In essence he did do it quietly. He never said he was going to strike, and he came out and said i decided know the to strike. What was he not quiet about that you think he shouldnt have said . Well, the entire action, if youre going to take a strike, if youre going to use a kinetic strike, you want to make sure that your allies, the other people in the area, the other nations in the area are ready for what might very well be a counter measure. Leland but he didnt do that. He didnt take a strike. I mean, curious. I agree with that. Leland what are you saying that he said that he shouldnt have said . You said he should be quiet. What did he say that he shouldnt have said . He should not have announced why he took why he started and why he stopped. Leland okay. That is a that creates enormous confusion among our friends as well as our enemies, as to what they might expect next. Right now were in a pause. Thats a good thing. Theres talk of negotiations. Thats a good thing. Theres talk of additional sanctions, maybe they work, maybe they dont work, but those are paths that need to be fully explored not just by the United States, but by other countries. The jcpoa is still in effect for some countries, although iran is now in the process of violating it. All of these things are very complex. The meeting taking place at camp david now, extremely important that that go forward that there be a clear plan and one more thing, which is essential, in my mind, if the president decides that he wants to do a kinetic, that is an offensive action against iran, that is an act of war, and that requires that the that he come to the congress to seek permission to do so. The constitutions absolutely clear. Leland congressman. On that matter. Leland well, and you have a lot of support from both sides of the aisle and both chambers as well, both the house and senate on that. We appreciate you starting your weekend with us and hope it gets better from here, sir. It will. If we take the time to think it true carefully and then take action. Leland all right, sir. Thank you for being with us. Thank you. Leland thank you for being with us. Thank you, my pleasure. And now the House Foreign Affairs committee, aft before w get to this, lets talk about what the congressman said. That he feels that the president is talking, i want your reaction on it, and congressman garamendi thinks he should scale back on that. I think the president is doing exactly what he needs to do and i commend the president for doing that. I remember growing up my dad saying any fool can get into a fight. It takes strength and courage to walk away from one. What iran has to know, we are prepared if necessary much when you look at what they do, they shot down a piece of equipment. I think that President Trump ought to send them a bill and sue them and when they dont pay it take them to the world court let them put more pressure on iran. It justifies them having sanctions in place and more people will come to our side. It shows the bad actor that iran is since the 79 overtake. I want to talk about sanction ins a minute, but some people in your party saw this as a weak approach, the pulling back. What do you make of this. Absolutely not, i think it takes more restraint to pull back. Again, if there was People Killed in that, american citizens, or military personnel, it would have been a different scenario, but i think the president did exactly right. He had a piece of equipment, about 30 million, very expensive in International Air space. If iran could do to that. They shot through space that the airliners travel, this is what the world needs to call out not just america. Speaking of that where are we with our allies on that. If you go back to the jcpoa, pulling out of that, that was upset, but that was agreement passed through nobody voted on that in the house and indebted the United States of america to be in that and i think he did right by doing that and i think youll see more of our allies and the european nations and around the world, saying, President Trump was right in doing that and this justifies us pulling out of that and i think youll see more people come to our side with more sanctions and economic pressure on iran. How does what does that look like . Where do we go from here in terms of the best diplomatic approach . Many agree thats the way to go, but what does it look like . Well, i think you saw the president say, lets make iran great again. I think anytime youre willing to sit down with an adversary and have a conversation, theres hope for the future and an opportunity for the future. And if iran will put the nonsense that they do around the world and we can go, you know, decade by decade of the terrible things theyve done with the largest state of terrorism and get them to focus, have them become trading partners, i think that everybody will be better off and the iranian people will better off. Youve talked about the sanctions and lets talk about what you would like to see. Well, i think you see the nations that have pulled back on buying iranian oil. There are still nations buying that, china is still buying it, all the other nations that are still buying that, supplying money to the Iranian Regime, who has got terrorist networks around the world, theyre in south america, theyre in central america, we certainly know what theyre doing in syria. When President Trump did the jcp oa and that, hezbollah got rebuilt and rearmed and it was the money that came from the United States that went to the ayatollahs, that went to rebuild a proxy group tore for iran thats doing all kinds of strikes around the world. They went to the Houthi Rebels that are bombing the saudis and theyve shot at our ships out in the mediterranean or gulf of oman. This is what iran does with the economy, growing the economy and come back into the modern world. We have a chance to sit back and were in the pause, a good time to talk about it. I want to thank you. Thank you so much. Yes, maam. Leland. Leland be sure to catch Fox News Sunday for Chris Wallace interview with arkansas senator tom cotton and also what John Garamendi was talking about approval for a strike. And on media buzz, talking to sean spicer about the medias coverage about President Trumps decision on iran, 11 a. M. Easte eastern. The South CarolinaDemocratic Convention is underway, nearly two dozen of the 2020 hopefuls are there to make their pitch. Yesterday jim cliburns world famous fish fry brought out much of the field vying for early support in the early state. None other than peter doocy on the ground, columbia, South Carolina as the speeches are, it looks like taking a bit of a pause, peter. Its lunchtime here in South Carolina, leland where joe biden is the front runner, but he doesnt speak until the end. Day, so the rest of the field is here making themselves heard. Particularly today, kamala harris, who was the first contender of the day at the Convention Center and who made a grand entrance surrounded by a drum line before taking the stage and trying to turn President Trumps signature slogan against him. I know that we have in this white house a president who says he wants to make America Great again, well, what does that mean . Does that mean he wants to take us back to before schools were integrated . Does that mean he wants to take us back before the Voting Rights act was enacted . Does that mean he wants to take us before the Civil Rights Act was enacted . Does he want to take us back to before roe vs wade was enacted . Because were not going back. Harris was at jim cliburns fish fry with most of those except for Pete Buttigieg who stayed back to deal with the aftermath of the policeinvolved shooting and he referred at one point to the victim who allegedly wielded a knife as many like a Family Member that died. And a tragic shooting of a resident of our community by a police officer, it is as if one member of our family died at the hands of another, and even as an outside process works to determine what happened, we already know why such deep wounds are surfacing, why our whole and the crowd here is not just energized by talk about the first in the south democratic primary, theres also a lot of talk about the general election and not just getting out the vote to try to beat trump, but also trying to get out the vote to try and beat the republican senator who is up this cycle, lindsey graham. Leland. Leland josh kimbrel, talk radio in South Carolina as well about that issue. Thanks, peter, appreciate it. And ice is set to begin immigration in raids and te in ten cities this sunday. And as the president touts the decision other officials are wary. Christina coleman joins us with more on that. Hi. Hi, laura. President trump just spoke about the raids on the white house lawn this morning, saying again when people come to our country illegally, they will be deported. Were now just hours away from when these raids are get to begin. The feds are expected to target about 2000 families facing deportation orders in as many as ten cities, including los angeles, San Francisco, houston, chicago, and miami. Democratic california governor Gavin Newsome called trumps proposed raids cruel and misdirected and newsome putting out information informing the immigrants of their rights in case theyre up for deportation. And newly elected chicago mayor Laura Lightfoot writing on twitter, my strong objection to any had further raids, or raids. Further i reiterated that cpd will not cooperate with or enforce ice actions. And immigrant groups say it raises a threat to the entire immigrant community not just those facing deportation. What we see with these threats is really to create not just fear amongst the individuals that theyre targeting, but fear amongst the entire community. The upcoming efforts supposedly focuses on people who already received final deportation orders from a judge, but who have not yet left the country and the president added this morning, ms13 will also be a target. The deportation raids, as you call them, are really a group of very, very good Law Enforcement people going by the law, going by the rules, going by our court system and taking people out of our country who came into our country illegally. Were very focused, ice, ice is these are fantastic people. Were very, very focused on getting ms13 out of this count country. Here in los angeles democratic mayor Eric Garcetti reaffirmed that l. A. P. D. Wont play any role in immigration raids and l. A. Is also, a socalled sanctuary city. All right, Christina Coleman for us in our l. A. Bureau. Thank you so much. Leland.
