Death rates in one day. Florida, mississippi, new jersey, hitting their greatest number of oneday fatalities so far and Record Number of cases have been reported in North Carolina and iowa but those facts have not stopped or Public Officials in spots in our country from starting reopening, Christina Coleman covering with all of us but first Mark Meredith who is standing by in the north lawn in the white house with the latest on the president s plan. Mark afternoon, eric, the white house says hopes the country can be able to mend soon and although they had cases that would drop for 14 days we have seen governors decide to go ahead and reopen certain businesses but also hearing from dr. Deborah birx americans have personal responsibility in all of this. As States Reopen we really want them to file the gated criteria and also make sheer to the american, this is what you need to do to continue to protect yourself. You need to continue to social distance an you need to continue to practice scrupulous handwashing, you need to know what your hands where they have been and what they have touched. Mark President Trump has been talking about different state plans, you can see some the states that are there that will be lifting restrictions tomorrow. Some of them have started to do that earlier last week. Now the president himself is going to be hitting the road out to arizona later on this week. He said to visit on tuesday and this was the tweet he had when it came to maine. Many complaints coming in about maine. I love the state dont make the cure worse than the problem itself. That can happen, you know that came after the governor there worked on some Health Restrictions impacting restaurants but as i mentioned, eric, the president himself will be hitting the road this weekend and the white house to get the president out there on the road, eric. Eric yeah, up in maine former governor paula page, big trump supporter will challenge current democratic governor there. As some states start to reopen, what is it showing in terms of the economy and where we will know where things stand on that . Mark eric, the white house is bracing for bleak economic use. The jobs report for april is due at the end of this week and would give us an idea of what the unemployment rates will be. Some 16 to 19 , we are still hearing optimism from the white house when it comes to the economy with larry kudlow saying next year could be a record year. Its going to be very difficult in the months ahead. No question, having said that, i will note that the Congressional Budget Office and a bunch of private forecasters, wall street journal surveyors are looking for a very strong second half economic rebound and suggesting that 2021 next year could be one of the fasters growth rebounds in American History or recent history. Mark liely likely we will hear back from the president in a couple of hours in town hall. He will be back from camp david. Eric tonight the president will be sitting down with bret and martha, special fox news town hall, 7 00 p. M. Eastern right here in the Fox News Channel reporting on the latest on the coronavirus response, arthel. Arthel okay, eric, right now we will go to Christina Coleman in los angeles with the latest on states slowly restarting their economy, hi, christina. Christina just under half of the states in the u. S. Have started some type of reopening effort and they vary from allowing hospitals to get ready for elective surgeries again to reopening state parks, at least 24 states have announced ease on restrictions or the changes are soon to come including in alaska, oklahoma, georgia, arkansas and florida. Colorado will be embracing a safer at home approach which advises but does not require citizens to stay at home unless its necessary to leave their house. Colorados democratic governor say it is rollback will be slow. On april 17th, florida restored Public Access to beaches and in georgia, gyms, bowling alleys allowed to reopen as long as they followed distancing and strict hygiene guidelines. Mississippi reopening some with downward case on Fox News Sunday. Hes delaying on easing off restrictions for now. We have been between 200 and 300 cases without a spike. Our Hospital System is not stressed. We have less than 100 people in our stateowned ventilators. Sometimes the models are different from different states and different from various counties and we believe that that particular gating criteria just doesnt work in states like ours who have never had more than 300 cases in any one day. Christina in new jersey one of the hardest states for coronavirus, state and county parks opened this weekend. Here is new jersey democratic Governor Phil Murphy with more on the states progress and concerns over protesting restrictions. I dont begrudge their right to protest, my Biggest Issue is they were congregating without face masks. We decided to open state and county parks this weekend as you rightfully pointed out. I have to say yesterday the reports in compliance was very high in terms of social distancing and not congregating. Christina large protests to ease coronavirus restrictions or address certain economic consequences to have stay at home orders continued. Many michigan protestors rallied on what is excessive orders by the governor and here in california there were protests just over the past few days, one of them in los angeles on thursday where people gathered at city hall to call for rents cancellation, this on top of the states longrunning fight over Affordable Housing and others protested the closures of the beaches in orange county, so even though things are reopening slowly, apparently theres still a lot of discontent and economic concerns in addition to those who want to make sure theres more Testing Available to track and trace potential covid19 outbreaks as the States Reopen, arthel. Arthel Christina Coleman no longer in the beach, back in the news room, thank you. I think its important step for people of florida to know that theres a light at the end of the tunnel. We will follow a safe, smart step by step to floridas recovery and we will follow data and facts but intend moving forward to get the society on its feet again. Well, thats Florida Governor ron desantis this morning on sunday morning futures. He was laying out his plan to begin opening the Sunshine State tomorrow. Theres specific guidelines, parks will reopen, restaurants and stores need to limit occupancy to 25 , but you know as part of the governors plan Miamidade County where miami is and broward and Palm Beach County will still remain under tighter restrictions. One county that wont be is duval, home of Jacksonville Florida and jacksonvilles marry mayor joins us from there, mayor, what will happen when businesses reopen . Certain businesses will begin thank work. We are following President Trumps blueprint and working with Governor Desantis. Through the federal dollars we got from the Trump Administration we allocated significant amount of dollars to expand testing rapidly, so we are going to begin moving towards getting people back to work in a safe, smart way. Eric is testing and the fact that youre doing your own testing, is that really a key to reopening on who has the virus or contact tracing, where it spread . Testing has been the key through all of this. We were one of the first cities to get testing and we reached out to President Trump and Governor Desantis and got testing up early. We continued to expand it and we have large dollars budgeted to rapidly expanded to make sure if people have symptoms, if they dont have symptoms, we would be able to get them in and get tested including walkup testing so the whole community has access. Eric we just heard from Christina Coleman in los angeles about beaches there. Governor newsom had to retreat with order, you opened 2 weeks ago, do you think its going to be a problem in florida beaches . We opened up 2 weeks ago with restrictions, you cant sub bathe or have coolers or lay down. I was on a call with ron desantis task force to reopen a week ago. Some beaches considering opening the beaches modeling the way we did and people are behaving responsibly on our beaches. We still have restriction which is we will lift tomorrow and monday. So starting monday unlimited access in terms of hours in terms of beaches and worked out for us, people are behaving responsibly and getting out of the house and moving around. Eric you know, talk about getting out of the house and moving around, there are differences and this can be tailored to different counties. Let me show you so far your whole state, 12,632 cases, theyve been sadly 667 deaths. Thats 12,632 in miamidade, 367,000 deaths there. Take a look at the difference in counties, your county duval, youve had far less number of cases, youve had 23 deaths and some other counties, look at this, Lafayette County has had only 2 cases with no deaths, Franklin County no deaths, golf county one case and no deaths. Mayor, can this be a tailored made or tailored engineer program to open up slowly in those counties, those areas that have such slow numbers like you have in jacksonville compared to a metropolis like miami . Absolutely. I talked to Governor Desantis about that and we are talking to him about potentially move ago head. We had over 20 days of decline and percent of people test that test positive, so im proud of the people jacksonville and duval county, theyve acted responsibly and as we go thank work they will do it responsibly, people that can work from home, i believe will do that but we have to be mindful of peoples liberties. In time of crisis the constitution, it exists, it is our document, so we are going to suggest things to people knowing that our people will behave in a way that doesnt spread the virus. Eric and it is, of course, up to peoples behavior. This morning your former mayor bill de blasio issued a warning saying in japan they opened up too early and has to go back 26 days later with, with spike. Some states are rush to go restart and some are doing it without a lot of evidence and a lot of healthcare indicators to tell them whats really going on and im hoping and praying for them that doesnt backfire horribly on the people of those states. Eric he called it a boomerang, how do you prevent a possible spike or boomerang in jacksonville . You have to be smart and act responsibly. The virus doesnt spread itself, people spread it. Without a vaccine we will have to manage it. The lockdowns that started around the country was to slow the spread. If you talk to a physician, if i was a physician i would say the same thing. The safest thing is to stay home, but its not sustainable. Theres other health ramifications, economic ramifications so wife to get so we have to get back to work and do it in a way thats safe. The president has layed out phases to follow and we are following as blew print and our governor is moving methodically and our people are behaving responsibly. Eric hopefully they will continue to do that. Governor of jacksonville, florida, we thank you. Thank you. Eric reminder for you tonight the fox news town hall special with the president. Its called america together returning to work, live tonight at 7 00 p. M. Eastern, of course anchored by bret baier and Martha Macallum and if you have any questions about the economy in trying times and coronavirus, send video message, town hall at foxnews. Com up load it to our Facebook Page where you can go to instagram pages on fox news and the question could potentially be posed to the president tonight at 7 00 p. M. , really fascinating and cant wait for that, arthel. Arthel eric, thank you, from the mayor of jacksonville to the governor of new york where in the state there were 280 deaths related to covid19 just yesterday. So lets now dip into Andrew Cuomos daily coronavirus briefing. Once europe was having outbreaks really accelerated the rapid spread. The time of alert should have been earlier. Thats a very important fact and something that we have to learn from. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. This, nobody was watching italy and europe at the time, nobody was even thinking about it. Today we must consider an outbreak anywhere is an outbreak everywhere and i think thats those are words to remember going forward. Outbreak in china in a number of days its going to be in europe, from europe its going to come to the United States, assuming it didnt come from the United States immediately from china. Another lesson we have to learn is our Hospital System. We talk about our Hospital System. We dont really have a Public Health system. We have a Hospital System and we learned the hard way about the capacity, management of our Hospital System. We have only 12 hospitals, they are the health and Hospitals Corporation that run by new york city. Theres only 12 hospitals and in public Hospital System. 44 hospitals are private hospitals, private institutions. They are regulated by the state, but they are private institutions. They have their own area of expertise, they have their own basic clientele and they are doing business as individual entities, like an individual college, right, we dont we have a system of colleges but each college is individual. Its the same thing with hospitals. Each hospital is an individual entity. Long island we have four public hospitals, 19 private hospitals. Westchester one private hospital, 12 private, rockland 1 public two private. Hudson valley, rest of the state two public hospitals, 87 private hospitals. So really your healthcare capacity in the state is all in the hands of private hospitals, right . You have 176 private hospitals in the state, thats the capacity, but that means you have to rely now on the private hospitals, get them all to be part of one system which daytoday that does not happen. Theyre operating themselves and this is regulation that says how you must operate. Arthel andrew cuomo emphasizing not to forget about the care of the healthcare workers, the state of the Healthcare System specifically hospitals and the like, quoting saying, nobody was watching italy and europe and also saying that we must consider an outbreak anywhere is an outbreak everywhere as this covid19 continues to take the lives of so many americans. Eric. Eric all right, arthel, straight ahead here in Fox News Channel we will tell you about the startling number of americans who believe it or not were unable to file for Unemployment Benefits according to one estimate, we will tell you who and why and some new shocking developments and surprising admission from tara reade on her Sexual Assault accusation of joe biden in 1993 that hes denying. Arthel more than 30 million americans filing jobless claims in the pandemic, but a new report suggests the number could be even higher. Kept listening to the same recording over and over to where you can say it in your sleep. I couldnt get in. It froze up. I cant tell you how many times it froze. Theres no sense of having to go through all of that. Arthel tammy ayala lost her job in Furniture Company and said it took her 30 days to speak with someone from the Unemployment Office because she couldnt access the system online. Nonpartisan Economy Policy institute estimated that almost 14 million americans have not even been able to file for Unemployment Benefits because of, quote, long neglected systems that cannot handle the current volume. Eric that is just astounding and so disappointing, utterly frustrating. If youve lost your job and need Unemployment Insurance and put on hold, wow, talk about insulting. Senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell and House Speaker nancy pelosi, they agree on one thing, they both declined a white house offer to make rapid covid19 tests available to members of congress this after the house physician said he didnt have enough tests that are the fast ones versus the slow ones. Both leaders issued a rare statement joint i will saying they would like to prioritize resources for frontline workers. Garrett tenney in arlington, virginia with more, hi, garrett. Garrett a lot of members are concerned about returning to dc and virginia under stay at home orders. On friday the white house offered to send 3 Rapid Testing machines to capitol hill to help ease the concerns but this weekend in a rare joint statement, House Speaker nancy pelosi and senate Majority Leader Mitch Mcconnell said no thank you adding in part we respectfully decline the offer at this point. Our countrys testing capacities are continuing to scale up nationwide and Congress Wants to keep directing resources to frontline facilities where they can go do the most good the most quickly. Capitol attending physician did release guidelines to help the Senate Return safely but theres a bit of frustration over some of the recommendations because it included ideas or recommendations such as installing barriers in spaces and motion sensors to automatically doors and they said we dont have stuff lying around to set up in a few days, eric. Eric meanwhile the senate back in session and the majority leaders causing controversy by calling all 10 senators back and many of them 65 years old and they are in vulnerable age group especially because of coronavirus, what are they plan ning . Garrett a number of hearings directly dealing with coronavirus and governments response to pandemic and thats in addition to number of hearings to work on nominees of various posts within the administration and the republicans are also divided with democrats over a fourth relief bill of the pandemic and they have very much divided. Republicans want any one measure to help businesses, democrats say that is a nonstarter and they are demanding a trillion dollars to help state and local governments make up for loss revenue due to shut do you ss. Here is gop senator mike braun on the demands coming from democrats. Its an opportunity for people that believe in the top down but larger government to Start Talking about another trillion dollars including putting money in state governments that have their own availability to borrow money and raise revenues and certainly shouldnt be a way to bail out with the way they managed poor poormanaged governments. Even if theres no actual legislation this next week, real negotiations could get underway and that means that an actual bill is still likely a couple of weeks away. Eric. Eric all right, garrett, thanks so much, arthel. Arthel eric, thank you, Presumptive Democratic nominee joe biden asking the senate and the National Archives to release any complaint that may have been filed by tara reade, former biden Senate Staffer who is accusing him of Sexual Assault in 1993. Reade revealing late last week she did not use the phrase, quote, Sexual Harassment when filing complaint, but remembers using the words, quote, uncomfortable and retaliation when describing the alleged incident. The associated prez also speaking with two additional former colleagues of reade who corroborated parts of her story bringing the total number of four people who have backed some of her claims. Joining us now is john bussey, associate editor of the wall street journal and fox news contributor, so john, i want to start here, so former Vice President is calling on the senate and National Archives to release any complaint on record filed by tara reade, number 1, could Sensitive Information get released inadvertently and two, could the Republicanled Senate slowwalk in a decision to release or not release files . John i think it would be in everybodys interest for any file, any documentation of this to come out, arthel. I dont think anybody is going stand in the way of it. You know, if the republicans are interested in making an issue of this, incline to release it. So far she said that she filed a complaint with the Personnel Department of the senate, so far a complaint hasnt been found. That doesnt mean that it didnt get lost in the paperwork. She said it happened and biden said it didnt happen, thats where we stand, and for biden the key thing here will be maximum transparency, encouraging as he has done the archives or documentation that they may find that its relevant to this. Remember, arthel, hes been vetted a couple of times and presumably Something Like this would have come out when he was vetted for Vice President under president obama but maybe not, maybe paperwork was lost. Arthel meanwhile without any new release of document that is we are talking about this lays down Public Opinion. So what and how will the American People judge the accuser and the defendant . John well, maximum transparency as pointed out and she mentioned that it happened to friends of her and incidents of that where other people can say at a minimum we may not have seen it happen but but she mentioned this to us. Thatll be important i think in the Public Opinion, on the other hand, documentation of it, she did file a document, she says she did and one cant be found. That i think will also affect how Public Opinion views this. Whether or not it would become issue in campaign, those in Democratic Party who would grin. We have president with Sexual Assault allegations. Arthel exactly. I know where youre going. I want to play sound bite of Rona Mcdaniel that say Mainstream Media and prominent democrats came to bidens defense quickly and you have dnc chair tom perez, the focus on biden documents at the university of delaware will not yield anything, lets listen to that and we will talk about it. Due process and the presumption of innocence has no longer been the standard in this country when it comes to republicans and now democrats are suddenly embracing those legal standards that we have made the cornerstone of our country when it comes to joe biden, but they threw it out the window when it came to brett kavanaugh. The university of delaware and any university that takes somebodys documents, they are taking their policy documents, they are taking their speeches, theyre not taking their personnel records, and in fact, why not just search tara reade in those documents . This is like the hillary emails because there was nothing there. Arthel okay, so the fingerprints of politics mostly found in the case. Back to you, do democrats bear any risk if they speak too quickly in claiming bidens innocence and then, you know, conversely given multiple Sexual Assault and harassment allegations lodged at candidate and President Trump, could it lead to political peril, you know what, john, im out of time, i beg your pardon, we have to go. John bussey, thank you so much. We will be back after this break. Dont think so . Hold my pouch. You get way more than free shipping. You get thousands when you shop for your home at wayfair of items you need to your door fast the way it works best for you. Even the big stuff. You get a delivery experience you can always count on. You get your perfect find at a price to match on your schedule. You get free two day shipping on things that make your home feel like you wayfair. Way more than furniture. Arthel my apologizes to john bussey, we were up against hard commercial break, sorry, john, meanwhile the fda granting emergency use approval for remdesivir as treatment for covid19 patients. The drug originally developed for ebola has speeded up recovery in some seriously ill patients but Public Health experts warn its not a magic bullet. Lets bring in dr. Grayson. I want to start with you how do you rate remdesivir . Well, i think that the results are quite impressive, arthel. Ive spent nearly a decade working on a very similar drug called galidesivr testing in brazil for covid19 and when we look at the drug, people talk about tamiflu for influenza. It has to be given very early and only decreases symptoms by maybe 1. 3 days on average. If you look at this early study from remdesivir, patients were much more sick, hospitalized patients unlike tamiflu and decrease duration by 4 days which is impressive and had been sick for quite some time. So overall, i think the results are impressive but, again, it certainly is not going to be the be all and end all, we do need other treatments and, of course, we are anxiously awaiting the vaccines. Arthel about that, how optimistic are you that our Science Community will find a covid19 vaccine and how soon . Gosh, you know, its not a guaranty. We certainly have all the best and brightest. I think that this has become marshal plan for the vaccine which im really pleased to see. A couple of months ago i was on fox friends and discussing the very issue with rob, rob schmitt and i said, look, we need to throw out the rule book if we want a vaccine. We have to do everything at risk and im pleased thats whats happening where essentially we have to maintain patient safety, but lets get that vaccine in parallel while we wait for the data. Worst thing we can happen is we waste money but, boy, we buy potentially a year of time. Arthel waste money but save lives. Thats exactly right. Arthel dr. Grayson, let me go here with you because when youre testing vaccines, im not sure you know this or not, when youre testing vaccines on patients, are you able to test for a variety of potential side effects . Yes, thats exactly whats done, so the way the clinical testing works is initially you start with safety, safety first, so the vaccines are started in doze that are much lower doze and slowly over time with new people that are in study increase the doze level while youre carefully monitoring people for side effects, potential side effects, so thats the first stage of testing and we have a number of vaccines that are in testing right now and as long as everything looks good there you move to second stage of testing which is now looking for those antibodies to the coronavirus that can the vaccine induce the antibodies and then you have to follow those people over time to see, okay, they have antibodies but does that really protect people from infection. Thats why it takes some time to develop the vaccines so anything we can do to speed up the process by manufacturing risk and manufacturing normally what you do is you wait and you get the results to have studies and then you pull the trigger on a manufacturer but that could cost us a year, thats why this is critical that we are ramping up the production of the vaccines now that we may have to throw some in the trash, but, gosh, i would rather much have them there and maybe waste the money than not. Arthel once they find a vaccine, you have to deal with the question of how much or how much immunity. Thank you so much. Thanks for having me. Eric ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seat belts and put your phone on Airplane Mode and, oh, yeah, put your masks on, thats what passengers will be hearing as major u. S. Airlines are going to begin requiring all passengers to wear Face Coverings not just when they are flying flying the plane but from the time they check in. Jetblue first to announce the rule. Dan springer live in seattle with more, hes at the home of boeing. Dan there are now 8 airline that is will begin requiring passengers to cover their faces during flights. The president of jetblue says this is a new flying etiquette and not just on the plane, people will also need to wear a mask or Face Covering during ticketing and at gates wait to go board or boarding process. Some people posted videos of crowded planes with no social distance and the more common sight are empty planes as domestic flight has just 17 passengers according to Associated Press report. Until now Face Coverings. Only recommended and not required and airlines are bleeding money. American Airlines Reported net loss of 2. 2 billion. Warren buffet Brookshire Hathaway lost and he decided to sell all of 7 billion worth of stock. He made a mistake in valuing even with the airlines receiving 25 billiondollar federal bailout. Boeing announced this week that it would cut workforce by 10 across the board and by 15 in the commercial airplane division. That would mean 10,000 jobs lost. Ceo dave calhoun said, quote, we expect it would take 2 to 3 years for travel to return to 2019 levels and an additional few years beyond that for the industrys long term trend growth to return. As for the mask requirement. Many on capitol hill are applauding it and some debts cant want a federal mandate, peter said in statement, we all have a role to play to stop the spread of the vicious virus and reckless and wrong for the federal government to shirk its responsibility. The big question now with Airlines Taking a lead, would more people feel comfortable flying, back to eric. Eric as long as they dont scrap the drink cart. Daniel they may. Eric no. After weeks of rumorses about his health. Kim jong un maybe hes not dead, hes alive says north korea state media this as the north and south happened to Exchange Gunfire on the dmz. Arthel stillwater, oklahoma scrapping the face mask, the mayor announcing 24 hours after the declaration took place. Mayor will joy he expected some pushback but did not think there would be physical confrontations with workers and threatening phone calls to the city hall. The mayor says face masks are required for employees and now strongly recommended for customers. Meanwhile the cdc recommends that everyone should wear a mask while in public places. Eric. Eric well, arthel, reports of gunfire exchanged between north and south Korean Forces at the dmz this morning. No reason for the sporadic outbreak after new video that they say shows kim jong un at the open of fertilizer plant on friday. You know that supposedly is first public appearance in almost 3 weeks amid rapid speculation that he was dead or seriously ill. We cant independently confirmed hes alive but trey yngst following from middle east bureau. Trey. Trey north Korean Leader kim jong un reportedly remerged this weekend after not being seen for weeks hidden from the public eye. South korean official did tell fox news today that the young dictator actually did not undergo surgery as previously reported. New images friday do appear to show kim jong un at the opening of a new fertilizer plant near pyongyang. At the ceremony he cut a large red ribbon and seen touring the facility with all of top advisers including his sister kim yojong and President Trump tweeting that i for thank hes doing well. North koreans do continue to test new weapons. Now hours of kim jong un reportedly reemerged there were reports of gunfire along dmz along north and south korea. Today mike pompeo described the incident as accidental, eric. Eric all right, trey, thanks so much, arthel. Arthel pandemic coming with a lot of first and that will be the case as Supreme Court justices will hear arguments on major cases, thats up next lline that Liberty Mutual customizes your insurance, so you only pay for what you need [squawks] only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Arthel the Supreme Court of the United States going hightech to adjust to social distancing guidelines in break with decades of tradition, the justices will hear oral arguments remotely for the next two weeks, david spunt live in virginia with more, hi, david. David good afternoon, first time the Supreme Courts has done this and i want to show you video of inside the Supreme Court, obviously its an empty chamber. Cameras are not allowed inside sessions, always been that way and im showing you the video because tomorrow when there are oral arguments the courtroom will look exactly like this, silent, empty, 9 justices and lawyers making case will teleconference in from different parts of the country. Several justices are out of state. It would not be a Video Conference just an audio feed and broadcast live on television on cspan and also online and unlike the free for all questioning, the justices this time will speak one at a time, so a little bit more organized in order of seniority, chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett kavanaugh last. This would be the first time in history anyone at home, arthel, can actually hear the arguments live as they are happening. I spoke with georgetown law professor paul smith who has argued in front of the court 21 times. Paul well, it is quite remarkable change of rules to have justices in remote location s telephonic connection where you cant see the justices youre arguing to. Its going to be a bit of a chaotic situation i would think because the justices are extremely active. David we will see how it goes, arthel, arguments start tomorrow morning at 10 00 a. M. , arthel. Arthel we will be fascinating, david spunt, thank you. Eric. Eric a missouri man leaving the hospital to heart warming applause after winning battle against covid19.
