a star-studded lineup for day three of the democratic national convention in philadelphia. hello, everyone. >> great to be with you again tonight. well, tonight was capped off when hillary clinton walked out to join president obama on the stage. ♪ [ cheers and applause ] >> the president calling mrs. clinton a fighter and a stateswoman. earlier in the night, vice president joe biden, man, oh
man, he took aim right at joe biden, at his readiness to be commander in chief. the vice president saying trump, in his words, does not have a clue. >> i know why we are united. it's because there's always been a growing middle class. this guy doesn't have a clue about the middle class. he has no clue about what makes america great. actually, he has no clue, period. in and out of office through hell or high water, fighting for underprivileged kids, working at the children's defense fund. fighting to get health insurance for 8 million low-income children when she was first lady. >> i can say with confidence, there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not bill, nobody more qualified than hillary clinton to serve as president of the united states of america. >> we're bringing all the
speeches this their entirety in just a few hours. but first, let's go to shannon brean who is live with day three of the highlights against kind of outside -- now that everyone has almost packed up and gone home. >> they stayed late, but they have trickled out. we are on the outside tonight, and it was a loud, spirited night for the dnc. on stain, there were military veterans, celebrity musicians, and of course, the president himself. he talked about the accomplishments of his last two terms in the white house, over the last several years. he said, if america is to keep moving forward, the only option is to elect hillary clinton. >> for four years, for four years i had a front row seat to her intelligence, her judgment, and her discipline. i came to realize that her unbelievable work ethic wasn't for praise, it wasn't for
attention, that she was in this for everyone who needs a champion. >> reporter: other than the president, the biggest applause came for two very different people. the crowd was cheering for former congresswoman gabby giffords. tonight, she told democrats there's just one option. >> hillary is tough. hillary is courageous. she will fight to make us safer. in the white house, she will stand up to the gun lobby. that's why i'm voting for hillary. >> reporter: the crowd was also pretty raucous for vice president joe biden, chanting and waving on their feet, acting like he was giving the acceptance speech tonight. many acting like that would be just fine with them. >> the 21st century is going to be the american century.
because -- because we lead not only by the example of our power, but by the power of our example. that is the history of the journey of america. >> reporter: of course, the man who hopes he will be the next vice president, tim kaine spoke tonight as well. he gave a bit of his biography, introducing himself to a lot of people who may not be familiar with his record. he often broke into spanish, as well. very spirited crowd here, and tomorrow night is the big night. actually it's tonight, i guess we're into thursday, when hillary clinton, the actual nominee, takes to the stage. >> that's right, it is thursday, 1:04 eastern time. of course, senator kaine also gave quite an impressive rendition and imitation of donald trump.
we'll be showing everybody that. shannon, thank you. heather? before president obama's speech, some lawmakers at the dnc told fox that they were concerned that the speeches by president obama and vice president biden, that they would maybe overshadow the rollout of the vice presidential nominee, senator tim kaine. and joining us now to discuss that and much more, the host of "sports court" and sarah flores, a former deputy campaign manager for carly fiorina. thank you for joining us. >> thank you. >> let's start with the excitement of the night. no doubt an exciting night. president obama, he's known to be a great speaker. he did not disappoint. but did he do the job, tamera? >> of course he did the job. i just want to point something out. what the theme of this entire convention has been is that we are a family.
and the overshadowing and the conversation of that, i don't know really where that's coming from, if that's coming from the democrats, i was disappointed in that. the point is, we have stars in our party. we hold each other up. we all have faults. as president obama said, he quoted a republican president, theodore roosevelt, and said it is not the critic on the outside but the man in the arena. that's what this is about. the people have all been in the arena with hillary clinton. she's not without her faults. i try to act like i'm perfect, but i also have faults and we all do. >> tamera, we know you're perfect. >> well, we don't want the audience to know that, but thank you, heather. you know, that's what this is about. i don't think it's a competition within the party, and also i want to point out the amount of credit that bernie sanders was given tonight was so amazing.
>> i have to get to sarah too, though. there was a lot of talk of bernie sanders, because obviously they're making a play for bernie sanders supporters. they want them to go to hillary clinton. also, you mentioned talking about republicans, there's been repeatedly a push to bring some of those undecided republicans over to the democratic side, as well. we're trying to start it positive, versus going straight to whether or not they overshadowed tim kaine. but what do you think, did they? >> well, i thought this was president obama's perhaps best speech ever. not surprising, he's a very talented speaker, connects with the audience well. i do think that will be a real challenge for hillary clinton tomorrow. this is something she's not particularly good at. it's why her likability numbers are so low, her trustworthy numbers are so low. his speech was great, it did overshadow the vp, but that was okay. i think he hit a lot of folks that will connect with some conservative voters. the problem is, however, that a
lot of what he said was just that, it was just rhetoric. a lot of conservatives on twitter were noting that it was, you know, ironic/hypocritical of him to say that the executive shouldn't have all this power, that we were a rule of law country, given his executive actions and his -- eight years of his presidency so far. >> that will be the challenge for hillary clinton, tamera, moving forward. how does she separate herself from his administration but at the same time, you know, use his popularity in order to get herself elected? because if you take a look at a lot of the polls, there is no argument that americans do not feel safe. 81% do not feel as safe as they did eight years ago. >> i think that's rhetoric. i think that's what people on twitter, conservatives on twitter have done to the psyche of the american public. i was this that stadium, and we could have all been afraid of
being attacked. every single bus in the city had an armed guard take us into the arena. the amount of security was insane. it was amazing and great. and nobody felt unsafe. >> it's a representation of america. there was a fence. >> well, yeah, i read about there being a fence at the subway stop. but the point is, there wasn't just one fence. there wasn't just a wall. there was all kinds of security, and you didn't know if a cop was a republican or a democrat. their job was to protect this nation, and this whole day and week has been to show the american people that this is what america looks like. it's all different colors and we're here together, protecting each other. there's no overshadowing. and i think that's what we've seen all week. >> all right. thank you both for joining us. appreciate it. sarah and tamera, nice to have you here to kick us off for the evening. thanks. so what is the headline from
last night? je brad, let me start with you. you ran the convention schedules for two presidents, george h.w. bush and george w. bush. what did you see tonight in the way this was handled that you would have done differently or the same? >> upstaging. we had the president of the united states upstage the vice presidential nominee of the party. more importantly, millions of people at home still don't know who he is, because joe biden was talking more about donald trump than he was talking about the person he should have been talking about, and that is tim kaine. >> and so i think that the sitting president should have opened the convention on monday night, the democrats were in desperate need of unity. he could have done that. >> you know what the front page
tomorrow is going to be? it's going to be that. that hug is going to be on the front page of every newspaper in the country, not the guy, jessica, that mrs. clinton is running with. >> no, i actually thought that tim kaine was the weakest this evening. but he was also up against the ultimate all-stars here. i think that's not just this night. the democrats have put on a master class in thfantastic speaking. we have such a deep, extraordinary bench. and i was talking to judy about this earlier while we were getting our hair did. i said, what a night to be a democrat, to see the diversity, to have people from the military speaking out on behalf of hillary clinton, which we talked last night about the need for that. and gabby giffords who makes everyone cry and to hear her husband whisper, i think they
like you. it's distinctly different from what went on last week. i totally take your point, i just think there are so many fantastic democrats who want to be out there speaking for hillary clinton, that it was unavoidable. and that hug, that hug's worth a lot. so i'm glad that we got it. >> judy, was the vice presidential candidate upstaged in >> yeah, but i don't think it matters. i basically agree with brad and jessica. here's the bottom line, which is we haven't had any national security talk. we haven't had response to the donald trump's very effective line "we are in trouble, this is rous time. i'm the person for you to take care of you." what happened tonight was a group of three people that was a one, two, three punch of leon panetta saying you don't want an unstable, erratic finger on that trigger. and then you had biden saying, what kind of person takes joy in
firing people? hitting at his character. and then you had the ultimate independent, mike bloomberg, a real billionaire, come in and really sock it to his fellow new yorker, pointing out that donald trump is not the guy we think he is. the only thing that's real about him, as he said, was his hypocrisy. i thought it was an amazing night. >> it was a very patriotic night, specifically joe biden when he spoke, saying america and we're winners and all those things. it just made you feel great to be an american, which was very nice to hear. but at the same time, talking about all of this attack going towards donald trump, was there enough talk about some of the accomplishments of hillary clinton? >> no, and that's the problem, is it's not enough to be against somebody, you have to be for somebody. and i don't think the american people learned anything new or things they should have known about hillary clinton and what she's going to do for america.
it was everybody jump on donald trump. poor tim kaine was sitting up in his box while they were taking their bows. >> tim kaine, that was one of his high points, going through her bio. what he did really effectively is talk about how it's important to elect someone who has a passion even before they were in office. hers is protecting kids and families. >> what about her time in office -- >> he talked about being in the situation room when we decided to take out osama bin laden. he talked about what she did for new yorkers after 9/11. we heard about brokering the cease-fire between hamas and israel. i'm not saying it's necessarily enough, but i'm not sure whatever -- this is the woman that has been in the public eye for 40 years. what is most important is to make her part of that team that everyone loves. they love obama. they love biden. and they want to know that she's a continuation of that. i think that was accomplished. >> remember, from the very
beginning, we said this is going to be a negative race. what the democrats are doing is raising doubts about donald trump's fitness for office. >> and when you mention the 40 years in public service, this seems to be the year that people are looking for someone that is the exact opposite of that. >> don't you think that mike bloomberg's speech speaks to that, when he said there are issues with both of these candidates, but there are so many more with donald trump. and you need to go nfor sanity and comp tense. >> broomberg was settling scores tonight. i think it's get even time. >> this was hard for mike bloomberg. he would have liked to have been the man on that stage. he was the independent that didn't run. >> we will talk to you what the
president said throughout the evening. i don't recall a president being as political as this one tonight, and the way he went after donald trump. we'll have that coming up. >> hillary clinton's running mate getting a chance to introduce himself. >> he went directly after donald trump, mimicking him repeatedly. coming up, we'll show you the senator's complete speech and his trump imitation right after this break. >> it's going to be break, believe me. we're going to build a wall and make mexico pay for it, believe me. we're going to destroy isis so fast, believe me. there's nothing suspicious in my tax returns, believe me. "why are you checking your credit score?
"well you don't want to live with mom and dad forever, do you?" "then she says...bazang!" "ok, good one." (laughs) "bazang. remember?" "bazang...you get it?" "bazang?" "yeah!" "uh, how do i check my credit score?" "credit karma, don't worry bud it's free." "ohhhh." "credit karma. give yourself some credit."
welcome back to our all-night coverage of the democratic national convention. as you saw, virginia senator tim kaine accepted the democratic vice presidential nomination in philadelphia and he came out roaring with a fiery speech that continually mocked donald trump. >> it sure did. a way to introduce himself to everyone across the nation. here is his speech in its entirety. >> thank you, everybody. hello, philadelphia. hello, democratic family. i want to start off by thanking my beautiful wife, ann, and my three wonderful children, matt, woody, and anella. they're sitting right up there. you know, my son deployed with his marine battalion just two days ago.
he, um, he deployed overseas to protect and defend the very nato allies that donald trump says he now wants to abandon. semper fi, nat. semper fi. my parents and my inlaws are here. our nieces and nephews and hundreds of friends from virginia and beyond. i love seeing you front and center. including my friend of 37 years, senior senator mark warner. my great governor terry mccauliff. and my great friend and congressman bobby scott!
we love you all. today, today, for my wife, ann, and every strong woman in this country, for nat, woody, and anella, and every young person starting out in life to make their own dreams real, for every man and woman serving our country in the military, at home or abroad, for every working family working hard, to get ahead and stay ahead, for my parents and in-laws, and every senior citizen who hopes for a dig nnified retirement and heal care and research to end diseases like alzheimer's, for every american who wants our country to be a beloved
community, where people respect demeaned because of who they are, but rather respected for their contributions to this nation, and for all of us who know that the brightest future for our country is the one that we build together and for my friend, hillary clinton, i humbly accept my party's nomination to be vice president of the united states. thank you. [ applause ] can i, um, can i -- can i be honest with you about something? can i be honest with you about
something? i never expected to be here, but let me tell you how it happened. i was born in minnesota and grew up in kansas city. my folks weren't much into politics. my dad ran a union iron working shop in the stockyard. and my mom, and my mom was his best salesman. my two brothers and i pitched in to work during summers and weekends, and you know, that's how small family businesses to it. my parents, al and cathy, here tonight and going strong. they taught me about hard work and about kindness, and most especially about faith. i went to a jesuit boy's high
school, rocker's boys high school. wow, that's big line for the jesuits. now, we had a motto in high school, men for others. and it was there that my faith became something voit ital. and when i left high school i knew i wanted to battle for social justice. like so many of you. like so many of you. that's why i took a year off from law school to volunteer with jesuit missionaries in honduras. i taught kids how to be welders and carpenters. [ speaking spanish ] faith, family, and work. faith, family, and work. [ speaking spanish ]
and let me tell you what really struck me there. i got a firsthand look at a different system, a dictatorship. a dictatorship where a few people at the top had all of the power, and everybody else got left out. now, that convinced me that we've got to advance opportunity for everybody, no matter where you come from, how much money you have, what you look like, how you worship, or who you love. back in 1970, in virginia, a republican governor named
lynnwood holton believed exactly the same thing. he integrated virginia's public schools so that black and white kids could finally learn together. and then the family enrolled their own kids, including his daughter, ann, in those integrated inner city schools. many years later, ann went off to college and she brought those lessons from that pivotal time with her. and then one day, in a study group, she met this goofy guy who had been off teaching kids in honduras. well, ann and i have now been married almost 32 years, and i am the luckiest husband in the world. [ applause ] you know, let me tell you something, ann's parents are here today, 90 plus and going strong. [ applause ] 90 plus and going strong.
lynnwood holton, he's still a republican, but he's voting for an awful lot of democrats these days. an awful lot of democrats. and here's why. he's voting for democrats because any party that would nominate donald trump for president has moved too far away from his party of lincoln. and i tell you, if any of you are looking for that party of lincoln, we've got a home for you right here in the democratic party. lynnwood's example helped inspire me as a civil rights lawyer. i took onbacks, land lords, local governments, anybody who
treated anybody unfairly. i had a six-year case against an insurance company that was discriminating against minority neighborhoods all across the united states in issuing homeowner's insurance. folks, democratic friends, these are the battles that i have fought my entire life. and that's the story. and that's the story of how i decided to run for office. my city of richmond was divided and discouraged in the early 1990s. we had an epidemic of gun violence that was overwhelming our low income neighborhoods. people were pointing fingers and casting blame instead of finding answers. and i couldn't stand for it. so i ran for city council and i won that first race more than 20 years ago by a landslide margin of 94 votes.
and i've said ever since, if i'm good at anything in politics, it's because i started at the local level, listening to people, learning about their lives, and trying to get results. i see a mayor here who knows what i'm talking about. later, i became mayor of richmond, lieutenant governor, and then the 70th governor of virginia. now, i was a hard times governor. i had to steer my state through the deepest recession since the 1930s. but hey, tough times don't last but tough people do. can i tell you that virginians are tough people. we are tough people. and we're smart, too. we achieved national recognition
for our work, best managed state, best state for business, best state for a child to be raised. low unemployment. high median income. we shed tears along the way, we shed tears especially together in the days after that horrible mass shooting at virginia tech that killed 32 people from beautiful 19-year-old students to 70 plus year-old romanian born holocaust survivors. and we shed tears and held each other up. but afterwards, we fixed the loophole in the back ground record checks system to make our commonwealth safer and we've got to do that in the nation. we invested in our people, expanding pre-k and higher ed, because we all know in this room that education is the key to all we want to be. all we want to be.
and now i have the honor of representing my commonwealth in the u.s. senate. i work on the armed services and foreign relations committees to keep us safe at home and strong in the world. i work on the budget committee with our great democratic leader of that committee, a spectacular senator who used to be the mayor of vermont, bernie sanders. and, and -- [ crowd chanting "bernie" ] everybody, we all -- we all should feel the bern, and we should all not want to get burned by the other guy.
on that -- on that budget committee under bernie's leadership, we fight for investments in education, health care, research, transportation, and i also serve on the aging committee to make sure that seniors like my folks have a secure retirement and don't get targeted by rip-off artists, who will scam them out of their savings or overcharge them for prescription drugs. can i tell you a funny thing about the senate? can i tell you a funny thing about the senate? that sounds like a yes. i spend a lot of -- i spend a lot of time with republican senators who, once they have made sure that nobody is listening, will tell you how
fantastic a senator that hillary clinton was. now, look, this journey that i've told you about has convinced me, has convinced me over and over again, that god has created in our country a beautiful and rich tapestry, an incredible cultural diversity that succeeds when we embrace everybody in love and battle back against the forces, the dark forces of division. we're all neighbors, and we must love our neighbors as ourselves. now, hillary clinton and i -- [ speaking spanish ]
and we share this basic belief, it's simple -- do all the good you can and serve one another. pretty simple. pretty simple. that's what i'm about. that's what you're about. that's what bernie sanders is about. that's what joe and jill biden are about. that's what barack and michelle obama are about. and that's what hillary clinton is about. no [ speaking spanish ] yes, we can. yes, we can.
yes, we can. hey, um, last week, last week in cleveland, we heard a lot about trust. so, um, let's talk about trust. let's talk about trust. i want to tell you why i trust hillary clinton. first, she's consistent. she has battled to put kids and families first since she was a teenager. if good times and bad, in victory and defeat. in and out of office through hell or high water, fighting for underprivileged kids, working at the children's defense fund, fighting to get health insurance for 8 million low-income
children when she was first lady. fighting for the well-being of women and children around the world. hey, can i offer you a little tip? when you want to know something about the character of somebody in public life, look to see if they have a passion that began long before they were in office, and that they have consistently held it throughout their career. do they have a passion? did it start before they were in office? have they held onto it consistently? folks, hillary has a passion for kids and families. donald trump has a passion, too. it's himself.
and with hillary, it's not just words, it's accomplishments. she delivers. a senator after 9/11, i got my new yorkers and virginians right here. she battled. she battled congressional republicans to care for the first responders, who went into the towers, who went into the pentagon, and saved the victims of those terrorist attacks. as secretary of state, she implemented tough sanctions against iran to pave the way for a diplomatic breakthrough to curtail a nuclear weapons program. and she wasn't afraid. she wasn't afraid. she wasn't afraid to stand up against thugs and dictators, and as a keep part of the obama national security team, they decided to go to the ends of the earth to wipe out osama bin laden.
a, do you all remember carla, the little girl we heard from on monday night? who was worried that her parents would be deported? carla said she trusts hillary to keep them together. and you remember the mothers of the movement last night? they said they trust hillary to keep other mother's sons and daughters safe. and on a personal level, as he's serving our nation abroad, i trust hillary clinton with our son's life.
now, you know who i don't trust? hmm, i wonder. donald trump. donald trump. trump is a guy who promises a lot, but you might have noticed, he's got a way of saying the same two words every time he makes his biggest, hugest promises. believe me. it's going to be great, believe me. we're going to build a wall and make mexico pay for it, believe me. we're going to destroy isis so fast, believe me. there's nothing suspicious in my tax returns, believe me.
by the way, does anybody in this massive auditorium believe that donald trump's been paying his fair share of taxes? does anybody here believe that trump ought to release his tax returns just like every other presidential candidate in modern history? of course he should. hey, donald, what are you hiding? and yet, and yet, donald still says, believe me. believe me. believe me? believe me? i mean, here's the thing, most people, when they run for president, they don't just say
"believe me," they respect you enough to tell you how they will get things done. i mean, that's what most people who run for president do. in fact, you can go on hillaryclinton.com right now and find out exactly how she'll make the biggest investment in new jobs in a generation. how she'll defend and build on wall street reform. how she'll reform our immigration system to create a path to citizenship. how she'll make it possible to graduate from college debt free. you can see how she'll protect roe versus wade, guaranty equal pay for women and make paid family leave a reality. all it takes is one click. all it takes is one click, and we can see how she'll do it, how she'll pay for it, and how we'll benefit by it.
not donald trump. not donald trump. he never tells you how he's going to do any of the things he says he'll do. he just says, believe me. so, here's the question, here's the question -- do you really believe him? i mean, donald trump's whole career says you better not. small contractors, companies just like my dad's, believed him, believed him when he said he would pay them to build a casino in atlantic city. they did the work, they hung the dry wall, they poured the concrete, but a year after opening, trump filed for bankruptcy. he walked away with millions and they got pennies on the dollar. some of them went out of business, all because they believed donald trump.
retires and families in florida, they believed donald trump when he said that he would build them some condos. thousands of them. they paid their deposits, but the condos, they were never built. he just pocketed their money and walked away. they lost tens of thousands of dollars all because they believed donald trump. charity after charity believed donald trump when he said he would contribute to them. and thousands of trump university students believed donald trump when he said he would help them succeed. they got stiffed. he says, believe me. well, his creditors, his contractors, his laid off employees, and his ripped off students did just that, and they all got hurt.
folks, you cannot believe one word that comes out of donald trump's mouth. not one word. not one word. not one word. >> not one word! not one word! >> and i'll tell you, and i'll tell you, to me, to me, it just seems like our nation, it is just too great to put it in the hands of a slick-talking, empty promising, self-promoting, one-man wrecking crew.
but don't take it from me, don't take it from me. take it from former first lady barbara bush. barbara bush said she doesn't know how any woman could vote for him after his offensive comments about women. any woman, any woman. or, or, john mccain's chief economic adviser during the '08 race, who estimates that trump's promises would cause america to lose 3.5 million jobs. or the independent analyst who found that trump's tax plan, given to the wealthy and the biggest corporations, would rack up $30 trillion in debt. or how about this -- how about this, john kasich, the republican governor who had the honor of hosting the republican
convention in cleveland, but he wouldn't even attend it, because he thinks donald trump is such a moral disaster. or take it from the guy, take it from the guy who co-wrote donald trump's autobiography. here's what he said about trump, "lying is second nature to him." so do you believe him? >> no squlam -- no! >> how about on this side, do you guys believe him? >> no! >> do you guys believe him? >> no! >> is there anyone in this building who believes him? the next president, the next president will face many challenges. we better elect a candidate who has proven she can be trusted with the job.
the candidate who has proven that she's ready for the job. and when i say ready, i use "ready" for a very specific reason. when i lived in honduras, i learned something, the best compliment that you can pay to somebody was to say that they were ready. not smart. not friendly. not rich. but ready. because what that means in spanish is this, it means prepared, it means battle tested, it means rock solid, up for anything, never backing down, and friend, hillary clinton, she's ready.
she is ready, she is ready, she's because of her faith, she's ready because of her heart, she's ready because of her experience, and she's ready because she knows that in america, we are stronger when we are together. my fellow democrats, this week we start the next chapter in our great and proud story. thomas declared all men were equal, and abigail remembered the women. woodrow brokered the peace, and ellenor broke down the barriers. jack told us what to ask and lyndon answered the call. martin had a dream, and harvey gave his life. bill built a bridge into the 21st century, and barack gave us
hope. and now hillary's ready. she's ready to fight. she's ready to win. and she is ready to lead. god bless all of you. an to victory. and thank you, philadelphia. >> let's bring back our panel. judith, i'll start with you. >> well, he said he was boring and he is. look, if hillary and donald trump are pit bulls, attack dogs, he is a sheep dog. he's solid, he's lumbering, he's lovable, and he's hopefully going to herd in those white males. >> brad? [ speaking spanish ] >> i think that ordinarily it would have been a good speech for that crowd, because he's the vice presidential nominee. the problem is he got overshadowed by the big guns of the democratic party.
>> i also thought it was better the second time around. there's something positive. when i watched it in real time, i didn't think it was that great. but you can tell the content is there. >> we'll continue right after the break. >> we'll be right back. you've wished upon it all year, and now it's finally here. the mercedes-benz summer event is back, with incredible offers on the mercedes-benz you've always longed for. but hurry, these shooting stars fly by fast. lease the gle350 for $579 a month at your local mercedes-benz dealer. mercedes-benz. the best or nothing. now, come on down and we'll ask her some questions. >> and we'll also let our political insiders talk to her, as well. so we didn't have a whole lot of time the last time, jessica. i'll start with you. >> about tim kaine? >> yes. >> what i said in the last one is i think it's getting better with age. it's like a fine wine, tim kaine there. i think that all of the content was there, though, what he needed to talk about. first and foremost, tim kaine needs to introduce himself. six in ten americans don't know who he is, including donald trump, who confused him with the former governor, which is pretty great. that outreach saying republicans aren't the party of lincoln anymore, my father-in-law has been voting democrat a lot lately. also to talk about his missionary work in honduras. hillary clinton is not doing as
well with religious voters as she could have. four out of five evangelicals prefer donald trump. i said this all along, that tim kaine is the smart choice for her. she likes him and she's comfortable with him. >> you know, the republicans who aren't sure what they're going to do, brad. >> you have two really strong personalities leading both tickets. so the typical vice presidential nominee would be a pit bull. and i agree, we have a sheep dog on both sides. >> but we were just discussing during the break, he's not an alpha male. >> not at all. he's a ying to her yang, which is a good thing, because there's a lot he can do that she can't do. >> right. >> but i think joe biden should have used tonight to introduce the united states to tim kaine. he didn't do that. and tim kaine could have done exactly what he did tonight, just not overshadowed by president obama.
>> i think there's something so reassuring and solid and old fashioned democrat about tim kaine, though. he comes from that part of the party which you don't see in these videos of the protesters and the -- >> he comes from the clinton part of the party. >> or what used to be, a blue dog democrat. that's where hillary is weakest. we know she has a male deficit in terms of potential voters. someone like kaine is absolutely the best choice for her. the most inspired. >> a lot more straight ahead, so stay with us.
test. test. a stupid plan. hate drama? go to cars.com. research. price. find. only cars.com helps you get the right car without all the drama.
good morning everyone. although if you are still out west it's still late at night. >> we welcome you. several speakers got emotional about it. including a mother. >> i'm glad common sense gun policy was in place the day christopher was born, but where was that common sense, the day he died.
>> i'm here today because i want a president who shares that same sense of outrage, outrage that the gun lobby fights to keep open glaring loopholes that 90% of americans want americans closed. hillary is ready to take on one of our countries greatest moral failures here at home and that is the gun violence that is tearing so many of our communities a part. >> virginia house of delegates joins us, thank for joining us. >> thanks for having me. >> there's a lot of optimism about the issue of guns and gun control and hillary clinton what she can do but president obama has not gained a lot of traction on this issue. how can mrs. clinton have more success if she is indeed electd.
>> well, we need a democratic senate. it was the senate that sometime eyed obama and the house as well. we need more democrats in senate. 90% of americans don't want guns going to criminals. shouldn't be a partisan issue. 97% democrats, 92% republicans. that's the way law is right now. >> the republicans are saying mrs. clinton wants to take second amendment right as way. >> of course that's not what they are asking for. they're asking for universal back ground checks. most gun karp carries don't mind. we have republicans and democrats okay with suspected
drones dropping bombs in yemen. if a suspected terrorist is in the united states and a member of isis the republicans won't allow him to buy an ar 15 just doesn't make sense. why not have a simple law that says if you're a suspected terrorist and it's proven, you can't have a gun. >> the republicans in your state today have a press release talking about your senator saying that in 2005 he was against any new gun laws. now of course is for them because he's on the ticket. >> it's interesting i introduced a bill this year in the virginia house of delegate that's said people on the terror watch list could have due process and they just dismissed. tim cain after virginia tech came around to see these are very dangerous things particularly in the hands of someone mentally ill like the
killer at virginia tech. he had to consoelt tle the fami lists of the parents of the kid that's were brutally murdered. i think tim cain gets it now. >> all right we thank you for joining us. having gay time watching the having a good time watching the convention. >> absolutely. president obama's speech was amazing. >> that was for the republican side of this issue. it's becoming a big issue on the g.o.p. side. >> it is. but you heard mark, if we only had the senate, guess what with obama took power they had the senate for two years, had the house of representatives and had the presidency and gun control was so important why didn't president obama do anything about it. this is a red herring to democrats because it's a failure of leadership. when you see the amount of gun violence it's happening in inner cities who are are they governed
by, democrats. president obama refuses to talk about the violence that's happening in chicago. he's a reactionary president. he reacts to events. prevent harm not just respond it to it. it's not because we don't have enough gun control laws, we have plenty. >> it's horrendous what's going on, 2,000 or so killed during his his administration how will it play out through november. >> i think the democrats will try to make this an issue. i don't think the american people are going to buy it. nothing is certainly going to get down between now and a new president being elected. it's again one of their fall back issues that say failure of their governance in urban areas and not a reflection of anything that needs to be done.
>> sure we'll hear a lot more about it. >> well donald trump campaigning in ohio talking nato and said other nations need to pay their fair share. >> you're already the highest taxed nation just about in the world and we're paying 73% of the cost of protecting other people! so then you have, and this is something -- and you have to be honest, raise your hand, because i didn't know too much about it either but i'm a really fast learner. >> well let's get some insight from rick on this. he is former advisor to four u.s. ambassadors to the u.n. thank you for joining us. >> good morning. >> first of all your in sight on the floor, what did it feel like? >> you know, it was amazing. the one thing i have to say is that you know, this is chaos here, i mean bernie people are
screaming and hollering. still yelling when hillary's name is mentioned. i tweeted a picture i encourage everyone to go see it, when tim cain started speaking the bernie protesters hurleyed out this banter that said election fraud #wiki these people are honestly feeling like this election was stolen from them, funny because the democratic party is now saying the russians are stealing an election and complaining about trump doing it. they are saying that because they got caught stealing an election. i think it's chaos here and it's not translating through the media. >> it is not. i've not seen that banner. >> yeah no one is reporting it. >> i'll have to look at that for sure. one thing tim cain talked about he mentioned nato what are your thoughts on that? >> look, you know, whether it's
nato or the united nations these organizations do not work unless the united states is there leading them. and so i think we got a financial problem whether you look at it and say how much money is the united nations paying. >> we are paying more than other countries, they're not paying their fair share what they are supposed to be paying. >> no they don't. and smiometimes they're behind. i want to make it perfectly clear. let's talk about nato. nato is very important. we have to make it work. i take donald trump at his word when he says don't worry i'm going to get the deal. i'm just going through this trying to get the best deal. he is a great deal maker. so the number one lesson in the art of the deal when you read his book it's be willing to walk away from a deal. so i think what he's doing is as
candidates he's negotiating. he's telling us how he's going to negotiate. which could be helpful. if he becomes president though there has to be a change, because he cannot walk away from nato. look nato needs reforming and part of that reforming i think you should put the funding on the table to look at it. i think when donald trump talks about zero based budgeting when it comes to foreign aid that's a fantastic idea. we should not be giving countries more money every year on top of what they already get. they should come to the state department every year, tell us what they need and do zero base budgeting. that's the kind of stuff donald trump will do. >> rick, thank you so much for joining us, appreciate it. have fun there one more night to go. >> thank you great panel by the way. you guys got a great group. >> there is a great group tonight. you know he slammed donald
trump. there's was a lot of tough talk from president obama. >> coming up we will show you the president's speech in its entirety as he makes the case for his legacy for miss clinton. you owned your car for four years. you named it brad. you loved brad. and then you totaled him. you two had been through everything together. two boyfriends, three jobs... you're like nothing can replace brad. then liberty mutual calls... and you break into your happy dance. if you sign up for better car replacement™, we'll pay for a car that's a model year newer with 15,000 fewer miles than your old one. liberty stands with you™. liberty mutual insurance.
back now with our all night coverage on the fox sports news channel. fox news channel. president obama spoke last night at his fourth national convention. with the end of his presidency looming he used his platform to support hillary clinton his predecessor. >> hello america.
hello department dmocrats. so twelve years ago tonight i addressed this convention for the very first time. you met my two little girls lily and sasha, now two amazing young women who just fill me with pride you fell for my brilliant wife and partner, michelle. who has made me a better father and a better man who has gone on
to inspire a nation and who somehow hasn't aged a day. i know. the same cannot be said for me. my girls remind me all the time, wow, you changed so much, daddy. and then they try to clean it up. yeah. not bad, just more mature. ha, ha. and it's true. i was so young that first time in boston. and, look, i'll admit it, maybe i was a little nervous addressing such a big crowd, but i was filled with faith. faith in america. the generous, big hearted, hopeful country that made my
story, that made all of our stories possible. now i've been tested over the years and while this nation has been tested by war and tested by recession and allmaners of challenges, i stand before you again tonight after almost two terms as your president to tell you i am more optimistic about the future of america then ever before. how could i not be. after all that we've achieved together. a of the worst recession in 80 years, we fought our way back, we seen deficit come down, 401 k
recover, auto industry set new records, unemployment reach 14-year lows and our businesses create 15 million new jobs. after a century of trying we declared health care in america is not a privilege for few, it say right for everybody is a right for everybody. [ cheers and applause ] after deck alds of after decades of talk we began to weine out selves off foreign oil. brought our troops home to our families. and we delivered justice to osama bin laden.
through diplomacy shut down nuclear programs. open new chapter with the people of coupea. brought 200 nations together around a climate agreement that could save this planet for our children. we put policies in place to help students with loans, protejt consumers from fraud, cut veteran's homelessness almost in half, and through countless acts of courage america learned that love has no limits and marriage equality is now a reality across the land. [ cheers and applause ] by so many measures, our country is stronger, and more prosperous than it was when we started. and through every victory, and every setback i've insisted that
change is never eeasy and never quick. and we wouldn't meet all our challenges in one term, one presidency, or even in one lifetime. so tonight i'm here to tell you that yes we've still got more work to do, more work to do for every american still in need of a good job or raise, paid leave, or a decent retirement, for every child that needs a sturdy ladder out of poverty, world-class education, for everyone who hasn't yet felt the progress of these past seven and half years we need to keep making our streets safer, homeland more secure, world more peaceful and sustainable for the next generation. we're not done perfecting our union. or living up to our founding
creed that all of us are created equal, all of us are free in the eyes of god. [ cheers and applause ] and that work involves a big choice this november. i think it's fair to say, this is not your typical election. it's not just a choice between parties or policies, the usual debates between left and right, this is a more fundamental choice. about who we are as a people. and whether we stay true to this great american experiment in self-government. look, we democrats have always had plenty of differences with the republican party and there's nothing wrong with that, it's precisely this contest of idea that pushes our country forward. [ cheers and applause ]
but what we heard in cleveland last week wasn't particularly republican, and it sure wasn't conservative. what we heard was a deeply pessimistic vision of a country where we turn against each other and way from the rest of the world. there were no serious solutions to pressing problems, just fanning of recesentment and bla and anger and hate. an that is not the america i know. [ cheers and applause ] the america i know is full of courage and optimism and ingenuity, is decent and generous. [ cheers and applause ] sure we have real anxieties about paying the bills and protecting our kids, caring for a sick parent, we get frustrated
with political gridlock and worry about racial divisions, we are shocked and saddened by the madness of orlando or niese. there are pongts of america that there are pockets of america that never recovered from factory closures. men who feel forgotten. parent who's wonder whether the kids will have the same opportunities we had. all of that is real. we are challenged to do better. to be better. but as i travel this country through all 50 states as i have rejoiced with you and mourned with you, what i have also seen more than anything is what is right with america [ cheers and applause ] i see people working hard and starting businesses.
i see people teaching kids and serving our country. i see engineers inventing stuff. doctors coming up with new cures. i see a younger generation full of energy and new ideas, not constrained by what is, ready to dominique easley wh s seize what ought to be. and most of all i see americans of every party, every back ground, every faith who believe that we are stronger together. black, white, latino, asia, native american, young, old, gay, straight, men, women, folks with zandisabilities all pledge allegiance to this bold country we all love. that's what i see. that's the america i know. and there's only one candidate in this race that believes in
that future and devoted her life to that future. a mother and grandmother who would do anything to help our children thrive. a leader with real plans to break down barriers and break through glass ceilings and widen the circle of opportunity to every single american, the next president of the united states, hillary clinton. [ cheers and applause ] now, eight years ago -- ha, ha [ chanting ]. that's right. let me tell you, eight years ago
you may remember hillary and i were rivals for the democratic nomination. we battled for a year and a half. let me tell you, it was tough. because hillary was tough. i was worn out. [ laughter ] she was doing everything i was doing, but just like ginger rogers, it was backwards in heels. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] and every time i thought i might have had the race won, hillary just came back stronger. but after it was all over i asked hillary to join my team. [ cheers and applause ] and she was a little surprised. so, my staff was surprised.
but ultimately she said yes because she knew that what was at stake was bigger than either of us. [ cheers and applause ] and for four years i had a front row seat to her intelligence, her judgment, and her discipline. i came to realize that her unbelievable work ethic wasn't for praise or attention, that she was in this for everyone who needs a champion. i understood that after all these years she has never forgotten just who she's fighting for. hillary's still got the tenacity that she had a young woman working as the children's defense fund going door to door to make sure kids with
disabilities could get a quality education. she still got the heart she showed as our first lady working with congress to help push through a children's health insurance program that to this day protects millions of kids. [ cheers and applause ] she is still with the memory of every american who lost love oned and she fought so hard to help funding for first responders to help the city rebuild, as secretary of state she sat with me in the situation room and forcefully argued in favor of the mission that took out bin laden. [ cheers and applause ] you know, nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the oval office. you can read about it, you can
study it, but until you sat at that desk, you don't know what it's like to manage a global crisis, or send young people to war. but hillary's been in the room. she's been part of those decisions. she knows what's at stake in the decisions our government makes, what's at stake for the working family, for the senior citizen, for the small business owner, for the soldier, for the veterans, and even in the midst of crisis, she listens to people and she keeps her cool and she treats everybody with respect and no matter how daunting or how much people try to knock her down she never, ever quits. [ cheers and applause ] that is the hillary i know.
that's the hillary i've come to admire. that's why i can say with confidence there's never been a man or a woman, not me, not bill, nobody, more qualified than hillary clinton to serve as president of the united states of america. [ cheers and applause ] i hope you don't mind, bill, but i was just telling the truth, man. and by the way, in case you're wondering about her judgment, take a look at her choice of running mates, tim cane cain is
as good a man, as humble and committed public service as anyone i know. i know his family, i love his wife and their kids he will be a great vice president. he will make hillary a better president. just like my dear brother and vice president has made me a better president. [ cheers and applause ] now, hillary has real plans to address the concerns she's heard from you on the campaign trail. she's got specific ideas to invest in new jobs, to help workers share in their companies profits, to help put kids in preschool and kids through college without taking out a ton of debt. that's what leaders do. and then there's donald trump.
don't boo, vote. [ cheers and applause ] the donald is not really a planned guy. he's not really a facts guy either. [ laughter ] he calls himself a business guy, which is true, but i have to say i know plenty of businessmen and women who have achieved remarkable success without leaving a trail of lawsuits and unpaid workers and people feeling like they got cheated. [ cheers and applause ] does anyone really believe that a guy who spent his 70 years on this earth showing no regard for work and people is suddenly going to be your champion? your voice? if so, you should vote for him.
but if you're someone who is truly concerned about paying your bills, if you're really concerned about pocketbook issues and sewing the economy grow and creating more opportunity for everybody than the choice isn't even close. if you want someone with a lifelong track record of fighting for higher wages, better benefits, bigger voice for workers, and stronger regulations on wall street, than you should vote for hillary clinton. [ cheers and applause ] and if you're rightly concerned about who is going to keep you and your family safe in a dangerous world, well the choice is even clearer, hillary clinton is respected around the world.
not just by leaders but by the people they serve. i have to say this, people outside of the united states do not understand what's going on in this election. [ laughter ] they really don't. because they know hillary. they've seen her work. she's worked closely with our intelligence teams, our diplomats our military, she has the judgment and experience and temperment to meet the threats of terrorism. it's not new to her. our troops have bounded isil taking out leaders and their territory and i know hillary won't relent until isil is destroyed. she will finish the job land do it without resorting to torture or banning entire religions from entering our country.
she is fit and ready to be the next commander in chief. [ cheers and applause ] meanwhile, donald trump calls our military a disaster. apparently he doesn't know the men and women who make up the strongest fighting force the world has ever known. he suggests america is weak, he must not hear the billions of men and women and children who still look to america to be the light of freedom, dignity and human rights. [ cheers and applause ] praises saddam hussein, tells our nato allal li aa aa aa aal
america meets our commitments and every country sees america as stronger and more respected today than they did eight years ago when i took office. [ cheers and applause ] america is already great. america is already strong. and i promise you, our strength, our greatness, does not depend on donald trump. in fact, it doesn't depend on any one person.
and that in the end may be the biggest difference in this election. the meaning of our democracy. ronald reagan called america a shining city on a hill. donald trump calls it a divided crime scene that only he can fix. it doesn't matter to him that illegal immigration and crime rates are as low as they've been in decades because he's not actually offering any real solutions to those issues, just offering slogans, and he's offering fear. he's betting that if he scares enough people he might score just enough votes to win this election. and that's another bet that donald trump will lose. [ cheers and applause ] and the reason he'll lose it is
because he's selling the american people short. we're not a fragile people. we're not a frightful people. our power doesn't come from some self-declared savior promising he alone can restore order as long as we do things his way. we don't look to be ruled. [ cheers and applause ] our power -- our power comes from those immortal declarations, first put the paper right here in philadelphia all those years ago, we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that we the people, can form a more perfect union. ers of that's who we are. that's our birth right. the capacity to shape our own destiny. [ cheers and applause ]
that's what drove -- that's what drove patriots to choose revolution over tyranny. it's what gave women the courage to reach for the ballot and marchers to cross the bridge in selma. and workers to organize and fight for better bargaining and better wages. [ cheers and applause ] america's never been about what one person says he'll do for us, it's about what can be achieved by us. together. [ cheers and applause ] through the hard and slow and sometimes frustrating, but ultimately enduring work of self-government. and that's what hillary clinton understands.
she knows that this is a big diverse country. she's seen it. she's travelled. she's talked to folks. and she understands that most issues are rarely black and white. she understands that even when you're 100% right, getting things done requires compromise. that democracy doesn't work if we constantly demonize each other. [ cheers and applause ] she knows that for progress to happen we have to listen to each other. and see ourselves in each other. and fight for our principles but also fight to find common ground no matter how allusive that may sometimes seem. hillary knows we can work through racial divides in this country when we realize the worry black parents feel when their son leaves the house isn't
so different than what a brave cop's family feels when he puts on the blue and goes to work, that we can honor police and treat every community fairly. we can do that. [ cheers and applause ] and she knows -- she knows that acknowledging problems that have festered for decades isn't making race relations worse, it's creating the possibility for people of good will to join and make things better. [ cheers and applause ] hillary knows we can insist on a lawful and orderly immigration system while still seeing striving students and parents as loving families, not criminals or rapists, families that cape
for the same reason our forebearers came to work and study and make a better life, in a place we can talk and worship and love as we please. she knows their dream is quintessentially americans. and the american dream is something no wall will ever contain. [ cheers and applause ] these are the things that hillary knows. it can be frustrating, this business of democracy, trust me, i know. hillary knows, too. when the other side refuses to compromise, progress can stop. people are hurt by the inaction. supporters can grow impatient and worry that you're not trying hard enough, that you maybe sold out. but i promise you, when we keep
at it, when we change enough minds, when we deliver enough votes than progress does happen. and if you doubt that, just ask the 20 million more people who have health care today. ask the marine who served his country without hiding the husband that he loves. [ cheers and applause ] democracy works, america. but we got to want it. not just during an election year but all the days in between. [ cheers and applause ] so if you agree that there's too much inequality in our economy
we need to all be as vocal and persistent as bernie sanderses has been during this election. we all need to get out and vote for democrat up and down the ticket and hold them accountable until they get the job done. [ cheers and applause ] that's right. feel the bern. if you want more justice in the justice system, then we've all got to vote, not just for a president, but for mayors. nd sheriffs, and state's legislatures, that's where the criminal law is made. and we've got to work with police and protesters until laws and practices are changed. that's how democracy works.
if you want to fight climate change we've got to engage not only young people on college campuses but the coal minor who is worried about taking care of his family, the single mom worried about gas prices. if you want to protect our kids and our cops from gun violence we got to get the vast majority of americans, including gun owners who agree on things like back ground checks to be just as vocal and determined as the gun lobby that blocks change through every funeral that we hold. that is how change happens. [ cheers and applause ]
look, hillary has her share -- she's been character youred by some of the on and some on the left. she's been accused of everything you could imagine and some things you cannot. [ laughter ] but she knows that's what happens when you're under a microscope for 40 years. [ cheers and applause ] she knows that sometimes during those 40 years she's made mistakes just like i have, just like we all do, that's what happens when we try. that's what happens when you're the kind of citizen teddy roosevelt once described, not the timid souls who criticize from the side lines but someone who is actually in the arena. who strives valiantly, who errs
but who has the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement. hillary clinton is that woman in the arena. she's been there for us. even if we haven't always noticed. and if you're serious about our democracy, you can't afford to stay home just because she might not align with you on every issue. you've got to get in the arena with her. because democracy isn't a spectator sport. america isn't about yes he will, it's about yes, we can. and we're going to carry hillary to victory this fall because that's what the moment demands. yes, we can.
[ cheers and applause ] not yes, she can. not yes, i can. yes, we can. you know, there's been a lot of talk in this campaign about what america has lost. people tell us our way of life is being under mined by penitious changes and dark forces beyond our control. they tell voters there's a real america out there that must be restored. this is an idea, by the way, that's been pedalled by politicians for a long time. probably from the start of our
republic. it's got me thinking of the story i told you about twelve years ago tonight about my kansas grand parents and the things they taught me when i was growing up. [ cheers and applause ] see my grand parents they came from the heartland. their ancestors began settling there about 200 years ago. don't know if they had their birth certificates, but they were there. [ laughter ] [ cheers and applause ] and they were scott-irish farmers teachers, ranch hand, oil workers, hardy, small-town folks. some were democrats but most of them republicans.
and my grand parents explained that folks from these parts didn't like show-offs. they didn't a d admire braggers or bullies. they didn't respect mean-spiritedness. the folks who were always looking for shortcuts in life. instead what they valued were traits like honesty and hard work. kindness. courtesy. humility. responsibility. helping each other out. that's what they believed in. true things. things that last. the things we try to teach our kids. and when my grand parents understand was that these values
weren't limited to kansas. they weren't limited to small towns. these values could travel to hawaii. they could travel even to the other side of the world where my mother would end up working to help poor women to get a better life. trying to apply those values. my grand parents knew these values weren't reserved for one race. could be passed down to a half kenyan grandson are half asia granddaughter in fact were the same values michelle's parents, descendents of slaves taught their own kids living in a bu bungalol on the south side of chicago. they knew these values are exactly what drew immigrants here and they believed that the children of those immigrants were just as american as their own.
whether they wore a cowboy hat or yamica a baseball cap or hijou [ cheers and applause ] america has changed over the years. but these values that my grand parents taught, they haven't gone anywhere. they're as strong as ever. still cherished by people of every party, every race, every faith. they live on in each of us. what makes us american, what makes us patriots is what's in here. that's what matters. [ cheers and applause ]
and that's why we can take the food and music and holidays and styles of other countries and blend it into something uniquely our own. that's why we can attract entrepreneurs from around the globe to build new factories and create new industries here. that's why our military can look at way it does, every shade of humanity forged into common service. that's why anyone who threatened our values, will always fail in the end. [ cheers and applause ] that is america. [ cheers and applause ] that is america. those bonds of affection. that common creed.
we don't fear the future, we shape it, we embrace it, as one people, stronger together than we are on our own. that's what hillary clinton understands, this fighter, this mother, grandmother, public servant, this patriot, that's the america she's fighting for. [ cheers and applause ] and that is why i have confidence as i leave this stage tonight, that the democratic party is in good hands. my time in this office it hasn't fixed everything. as much as we've done there's still so much i want to do.
but for all the tough lessons i've had to learn for all the places where i've fallen short, i've told hillary and i'll tell you what's picked me back up every single time. it's been you. the american people. it's the letter i keep on my wall from a survivor in ohio who twice almost lost everything to cancer but urged me to keep fighting for health care reform even when the battle seemed lost, do not quit. it's the painting i keep in my private office, a big eyed green owl with blue wings made by a seven-year-old girl who was taken from us in newtown given to me by her parents so i
wouldn't forget. a reminder of all the patierent who have turned their grief into action. it's the business owner who cut his own salary so he wouldn't have cut off his workers in the recession because he said that wouldn't have been in the spirit of america. [ cheers and applause ] it's the conservative in texas who said he disagreed with me on everything. but he appreciated that, like him, i try to be a good dad. [ cheers and applause ] it's the courage of the young soldier from arizona who nearly died on the battle field in afghanistan, but who has learned to speak again, and walk again and earlier this year step through the door of the oval office on his own power to salute and shake my hand. about hope, it's been you who fueled my dogged faith in our future even when the odds were great, even when the road is long. hope in the face of difficulty, in the face of uncertainty, the audacity of hope. america you have vindicated that hope these past view years and now i'm ready to pass my baton as citizen i'm asking you to join me to rejectp fear and summon what is best in us to elect hillary clinton as the next president of the united states and show the world we still believe in the promise of this great nation. god bless the united states of america. [ cheers and applause ] ♪ >> god bless america. after that speech this is what happened, hillary clinton walked out on to the stage and gave the president a big hug. >> as you saw president obama received an enthusiastic and warm welcome for day three setting the bar high for mrs. clinton when she takes the stage later tonight. >> up all night. thank you for sticking around. what can we expect when hillary clinton accepts her party's nomination historic moment for president. let's bring in our panel. judith, let's start with you this time.
you're thoughts? >> on the speech, this speech, you know, this is vintage obama but i'm reminded of what michelle obama said on the opening night when they go low we go high. and the only thing that i objected it to in this speech was president obama's direct attack on donald trump by name. because i think that is not something a president ought to do even when he's handing over the baton at a political gathering. you know his most effective critiques of donald trump were actually his praise of hillary, his description of her as cool and as very organized and passionate and a passionate supporter of the mission to kill ubl. that is the very, very essence of what he's saying donald trump is not. and finally i'm also stressed by
the hopefulness of his message in contrast to the dark, vision of america divided, crime-ridden, facing terrorism. it is a dark message and obama wanted to be the opposite of it. i think he succeeded tonight. >> and republicans would argue that the republican convention was full of factual events that are going on right now. >> sure. i mean we couldn't deny that which is happening in the world that the democrats have avoided national security talking about isis. the threats we face every day. the thing about obama's speech is he lowered himself as president of the united states. he should be up here. there are plenty of people to knock on donald trump. we heard a couple days of it. the president should have take a more statesman-like role even though it is a convention. what i did like is when he
talked about his grandmother and being a bi-racial person and reaching out and we are all-americans. to me i was saying where have you been? this should have been your message for the last seven plus years. this is the kind of message of unity you squandered. that was the point of the speech i took away is why haven't you used that as a tool to unite america? >> jessica, it did feel like this was going to be his last speech. he talked a lot about his accomplishments. >> we got four minutes of video in case we didn't know what he accomplished. this is critical to roll back and see footage of the newtown shooting. we know gun control is top priority these last few months. i take judy and brad's points and i would like to add that what i think he did that was incredibly smart was to paint donald trump was anti-american.donald trump is sm
gonna make america great again. i am the pro-america candidate. what barack obama did was remind us what america is about. it is about bringing immigrants in and giving people a safe place to come. freedom of speech, freedom of religion. i would say we glossed over everything and it is a con veption and we are -- convention and we are not going to be doom and gloomy, but we did have national security leon panetta who i don't think was glossy. he strongly made the case to say we will be less safe with donald trump in charge. i learned after donald trump's press conference where he invited russian spying on the e-mails -- >> depending on who you talk tovment -- talk to. >> we will talk about that and hear what leon panetta had to say. >> that's hour seriously everyone is taking it on. i understand it is a joke, but it was a bad joke. he is not a comedian.
it is important that leading figures are taking this so seriously that they are updated their speeches hours before to make sure they cover everything donald trump is threatening. >> we will get into that. first another scandal that is happening and that is as mrs. clinton, we await her speech later tonight, the looming scandal continues to haunt the proceedings. it is the e-mails that show the democratic national committee working for mrs. clinton and against senator bernie sanders. now wikileaks has voicemails and they threaten to release even more. how will this affect the campaign? ellen ratner joins us now from talk media news and a fox news contributor and is in philadelphia at the convention. the founder of p wikileaks promises more e-mails and claims he will support mrs. clinton. >> the voicemail is more concerning.
what i am concerned about is this is not a republican or democratic issue. this is an american issue. it is an american issue because it is a national security issue. if a foreign government or anybody is looking into or producing voicemails and not just e-mails, but voicemails, this is a big concern that i think all americans are concerned about and we need to really figure out what is going on. interfering in an election is not good for any foreign government. >> of course, the accusations are unproven but they say it is the military service of rush -- russia. russia said this is ridiculous and of course they would say that. do you think that is a possibility? >> there is always a possibility. i am a talking head and not a security expert, but i will tell you that we as americans need to look at that and any
interference in the elected process and that's why the issue of the wikileaks issue with the democratic national committee was at the forefront. you had wikileaks which is an international group, jewel -- julian assange even though he is locked up in the embassy and releasing this is a major concern. we are in the middle of an election. who is anybody else to release our e-mails or our voicemails? >> it is interesting we haven't had any donald trump or a republican national committee e-mails and voicemails. so far they have gone through their convention. at the end how will this play out, and why are you so concerned as it relates to senator sanders. he wasn't clapping. he had a tight smile on his face. you can tell he was pissed. >> i'm sure he was. i was not near him, so i didn't see it.
the big screen of course had pictures of him, but i was account -- i wasn't near him. i will say if the democratic committee and convention and hillary clinton don't address the issues of our security and what that means in terms of going into, you know, we had 30 million personnel files hacked by china. at least that's who we think it was. that's a big security concern too. the average american is concerned that our information is being hacked by foreign government. and so i think that hillary clinton has got to address this or her people have to address this in someway. i don't know how. i am not the expert. it has to be addressed and paid attention to. >> certainly if more e-mails are coming out and they are damaging as promised. ellen ratner after 3:00 in the morning eastern time. have a good time tonight. >> thank you. >> see you later night. and then the hacking scandal with north korea as well.
>> the dnc hack prompting donald trump to say this. >> russia, if you're listening, i hope you are able to find the 30,000 e-mails that are missing. >> he says he was being sarcastic, but critics jumped on the comments. >> i find that statement to be outrageous. you have now a presidential candidate who is in fact asking the russians to engage in american politics. i just think that that's beyond the pale. >> donald trump asked our troops to commit to commit war crimes and endorses torture and spurns our allies from europe to asia and suggests that countries have nuclear weapons. and he praises dictators from
saddam hussein to vladimir putin. >> vladimir putin said, and i quote, in terms of leadership he is getting an a." i taught national security law. praising dictators was an automatic f in my class. >> donald trump's campaign manager as you can imagine had a different take on it. he responded to this on "the kelly file." >> what i find out outrageous is mr. panetta focusing on what mr. trump said in a sarcastic way and not the real problem. the real problem is she had an unsecured server in her closet in her home is that could be hacked by anybody in the world. the national security outrage should be focused on that. >> well that's gotten attention. trump created a firestorm by
saying something new which was this suggestion that he would hope that the russians would come and hack and turnover the the -- he says i hope you are able to find the 33,000 e-mails that are missing, russia. you will be rewarded mightily by the press. >> he didn't encourage anybody to hack. secondly what he said was the 33 illegally deleted e-mails are still missing. he was making a sarcastic point about the 33,000 e-mails. the bottom line on the whole thing is as far as what people should be outraged about is the fact that anybody could have hacked into the server of the secretary of state and gotten secrets that could compromise our national security. >> let me just ask you this, paul. if it was sarcasm and many people thought that in the moment and many others didn't as we outlined, why did he double down on it in a tweet and he followed up saying if russia or any other country or person has hillary's 33,000 illegally deleted e-mails
perhaps they should share them with the fbi. then his rapid response director said what he meant was, yes, hand them over. he didn't say it was sarcasm. many people believe trump meant it. >> what we mean is the american people should be outraged by the server in a compromised position. >> i got that. >> that's the reason it is a story. it is not in the news because of what mr. trump talked about this morning, but the rigged election from the dnc -- >> that doesn't splean what i am ask -- explain what i am asking. why did he follow it up with a tweet and why didn't they say it was sarcasm. >> the tweet was talking about turning the e-mails to the fbi and not getting involved in politics. they prosecuted the case and then came short of what should have happened which was asking for an indictment. maybe with the 33,000 e-mails they would come to a different
conclusion. >> let me ask you about the tax returns because mr. trump made some news and you followed up as well suggesting he is not returning the tax returns prior to november. to clarify -- because he says he is being audited by the irs. if the irs completes the audit will he release the tax returns ? >> that's what he said, yes. >> there you go. for more on all of this, i am joined by fox news political analyst. thank you for joining us. i am not sure we have your audio working yet. >> oh no! >> there you go. >> oh no! can you hear me? >> threw -- there you are. >> of course are you to hear me. >> let's talk about donald trump's statement. did he mean it and should he have done it? >> he shouldn't have done it. it was arrogant and sarcasm and i hate the fact he doubled down afterwards.
listen. we are in a political campaign and ellen ratner was correct when she said this is national security. of course the liberals jumped on it because they want to deflect and divide. i thought it was great what obama was talking about his heritage, but it was too late. the country is divided and we need to come together. i hate the fact the liberal mainstream media says we have a nominee that wants to buddy up with russia to go against our former secretary of state. >> how should he have handled it? >> apologize. say i miss spoke don't double down. you come across as arrogant and now have you given something to the liberals. we should beacon sen traiting -- be concentrating on how are we making a better america? by bashing hillary it does not make us look better. we look more like the liberals in deflecting. it looks poor. >> and you mentioned
deflecting. what were they trying to deflect from? there is a controversy about the rigged system with bernie sanders and prior to that the e-mails and the private server with hillary clinton. >> they are deflecting that the liberals are upset clinton chose kaine and they are upset over what they did to bernie sanders and trump keeps showing up and giving it to them. as a republican i am upset he doubled down and tweeted out. i am equally upset that the liberals have pounced on this and what the dnc did against bernie. >> in terms of bernie sanders, where do you think his followers will go? you heard the speeches this evening. do you think they did enough to bring bernie's followers back to the fold? >> bernie's followers will either stay at home, and i hope some will support trump,
but bernie was always consistent. the black community was divided between bernie and hillary because he was inconsistent. his ideas were a little kooki -- kooky. >> always love having you here. a couple of words we heard a lot and those two words are middle class. >> it came up at the dnc and donald trump's rally in ohio. more on that coming up next. drum p
welcome back.
the republican ticket is on the campaign trail. making stops in pennsylvania and ohio. in toledo, donald trump appealed directly to rust belt voters. he needs to get those. they feel shut out -- those that feel shut out. >> by the way pennsylvania has the same problem as ohio. the sobs are being sucked out of pennsylvania and being sucked out of ohio. they are being sucked out of michigan, new england, every place because of nafta and other things. our taxes are too high. my tax plan lowers taxes more than any other plan of any candidate that is running for office of president republican or democrat. we have to. we is have to. with the highest -- we are the highest taxed nation just about in the entire world. nobody knows that more than
the middle class and the middle class is suffering in this country. the middle class built -- it built the united states. it really did. it built the united states. our politicians forgot about the middle class. they forgot about the middle class. they took care of wealthy people like me. i'm not -- i am not complaining. i'll be honest with you. actually it is ridiculous. i'm gonna help you. we're gonna help you. it's unfair. it is a rigged system. it is a broken system. it is an unfair system. it is unfair to people that work so hard. they call it the forgotten man and woman, but the forgotten man and woman. they are forgotten. 18 years ago, when you look, 18 years ago you made more money in real terms than you are making today.
you didn't work as hard and you were a lot younger. in many cases today because of obamacare which we are going to repeal and r [applause]. in many cases -- in many cases -- i mean what is happening is you have part-time jobs. who has a part-time job? don't rise your hand if you are embarrassed. you don't have to be embarrassed. people who never had part-time jobs before are being forced into part-time work because of obamacare. it is insane. we will appeal it and replace it with something much better and much less expensive. that's gonna happen. >> our next guest says this election will be a battle for the middle class vote. it could be crucial in the key swing states. she is our chief political correspondent and fox news
contributor. good to see you at 3:20 eastern time in the morning. >> good morning. >> the first bus tour for clinton-kaine is on friday. they are going right after the middle class. pennsylvania, ohio. isn't that making a push at some of the trump voters? >> this election is about the middle class voters. i think the democrats are concerned that they will not get the support they think they will get from blue collar middle class voters. when you look at the fact that progressive policies have been harming our country and harming hard-working americans with high taxes look at obama's energy policy. he favors renewable energy over fossil fuels. he has a role on coal and there are thousands of coal miners who lost their jobs over the years. these individuals, all they want to do is work and all they want to do is support
their families. in certain key swing states like pennsylvania and ohio, the democrats are very concerned. they do have reason to be. >> well, there is an indication that that's why they are having the first bus tour and the first one is going to pennsylvania and ohio. are these the old reagan democrats? the steelworkers and the coal miners and folks who worked in the factories? a carrier whose jobs are sucked down to mexico. >> it is horrible what is going on with the jobs in these communities. it has to do with pro growth initiatives. look at hillary clinton, for example. she already said she wants to put coal miners and coal companies out of business. she doubled down by wanting to regulate the hydrolic fracturing industry. we are talking more jobs and higher energy prices for hard
working americans who are already suffering a consequence of the failed policies from this administration. you have americans that don't have $300 for emergency purposes to put aside to ham unexpected mmgs. emergencies. americans feel left out and feel like they are not being listened to. the democrats are concerned. >> we just saw the clip of mr. mr. trump saying he willower the taxes. in the acceptance speech by tim kaine he said it will increase the debt by $30 trillion. are you concerned that trump could be promising too much and it won't become a reality? >> he has been working with professionals in terms of economic initiatives. he is looking at tax reform for the lower taxes. he is looking at reducing regulation in the energy industry. this is what
americans are looking at if they are supporting donald trump because of what he is saying. this is an anti--establishment campaign going on. he is viewed as an outsider and people are looking to him to make real change which is really needed in our country. >> both sides are targeting the belt. pennsylvania and ohio and new york and illinois and wisconsin a little bit and maybe michigan. that could be where this election is decided. always good to see you. thank you for staying up with us. the clinton campaign was quick to hit the vp mike pence calling him the most extreme pick in a generation. he responded to that on "the o'reilly factor." >> i will always believe marriage is between one man and one woman. my conviction on this matter is that that's an issue that ought to be left up to the states.
once again we saw the supreme court in the united states reach into what is in the per view of state laws for generations and impose their view of that on all 50 states. >> they did that for equal low techs -- protection reasons. they believe those on the supreme court who voted for gay marriage. if you deprive them of that you are biased against them. you don't believe that? >> well, i don't. i abhor discrimination against anyone. one of the heros of my youth was the reverend dr. martin luther king, junior. everyone who knows me and knows my family we treat everybody with the same respect we expect from others. >> what about abortion? would you support roe-v wade. >> i look to the day we can
put the sank tau tee in the law. i am pro-law and i believe roe-versus wade was wrongly decided and overturned a century of pro-life laws enacted through the testimony -- through the democratic process. more young people embrace the sank tau tee of life. the centers across my state and this nation is changing hearts and minds every day. >> the left says you are anti-women and if you don't believe in, quote, unquote, reproductive rights. it is the same argument about gay and gay marriage. when you hear those politically correct arguments that are made in the media almost every single day. when you hear those you because you oppose gays marriage and you want roe-v-wade to be revoked you are a bigot. how dowry spawned?
how do you respond? >> i let it roll off my back. it comes with the territory, you know that. look at my -- we have had women in senior leadership and the cabinet positions. we celebrate the accomplishments of women across the state of indiana. >> from one potential vp nominee to the vice president joe joe biden. he was among the heavy hitters who spoke at the dnc. >> he really went after donald trump in a deeply personal and at times touching speech. we will show it to you next.

resolve and character. one of the finest presidents we have ever had. that's right. this is a man of character. and he has become a brother to jill and me. and michelle, i don't know where you are, kid, but you're incredible. you are incredible. i was talking to barak today and it is no longer who will give the best speech. we mow who did that. you were incredible on monday night. barak and i married way up. way up. folks, as i stand here tonight i see so many friends and colleagues like my buddy chris dodd in the connecticut delegation. so many people here. i see the faces of those who have placed their belief in barak and me, so many faces, but one. this is kind of a bittersweet moment for jill and me and our family. in 2008 when he was about to deploy to iraq and again in 2012 our son beau introduced me to the country and placed my name in nomination. you got a glimpse -- i know i sound like a dad, but you got
a glimpse of what an incredibly fine young man beau was. [applause]. thank you. thank you. his wife halle and his two kids are here tonight. but as ernest hemmingway once wrote, the world breaks everyone and afterwards many are strong at the broken places. i have been made strong at the broken places by my love jill, by my heart, my son hunter and the love of my life, my ashley. and by all of you, and i mean this sincerely.
those of you who have been through this you know i mean what i say. by all of you, your love, your prayers, your support, but you know what we talk about? we think about the countless thousands of other people who suffered so much more than we have with so much less support, so much less reason to go on, but they get up every morning, every day. they put one foot in front of the other. they keep going. that's the unbreakable spirit of the people of america. that's who we are. the kid in claymont with the most couraged always jumped in when you were double teamed or your back was against the wall. he became a cop because he always wanted to help people. the middle daughter of three daughters who always made her mother smile and was a hero to her sister and now a major in the united states marine corp because mr. president, i wanted to serve my country. [applause]. why? why? because being a teacher is not what they do. it is who they are. [applause].
you know what i know. for real. these are the people who are the heart and the soul of this country. itit is the america i know and the mark hillary knows and tim kaine knows. i have known hillary for well over 30 years. before she was first lady of the united states, when she became first lady. we served together in the united states senate and during her years as secretary of state once a week we had breakfast in my home. the vice president's residence. everybody knows she is smart. everybody knows she is tough, but i know what she is passionate about. i know hillary.
hillary understands. hillary gets it. she understands the college loan is about a lot more than getting a student education. it is about saving the mom and the dad from the indignity of having to look at their talented child and say, sonny, honey, i'm so sorry. the bank wouldn't lend me the money. i can't help you to get to school. i know that about hillary. hillary understand for years millions of people went to bed staring at the ceiling and thinking oh my god what if i get breast cancer or he has a heart attack. i will lose everything. what will we do then? i know about hillary clinton. ladies and gentlemen, we all understand what it will mean for our daughters daughters and granddaughters when hillary clinton walks into the
oval office as president of the united states of america. it will change their lives. my daughters and granddaughters can do anything any son or grandson can do and she will prove it, mr. mayor. so let me say as clearly as i can, if you live in the neighborhoods like the one jill and i grew up in, if you worry about your job and getting decent pay, if you worry about your children's education, if you are taking care of an elderly parent, then there is only one person in this election who will help you. there is only one person in this race who will be there and who has always been there for you, and that's hillary clinton's life story. it is not just who she is.
it is her life story. she is always there. she has always been there. so has tim kaine. ladies and gentlemen, to state the obvious and i am not trying to be a wise guy here. i really mean it. that's not donald trump's story. listen to me without booing or cheering. i mean it sear -- sincerely. his cynicism is unbounded. his lack of el empathy and compassion can be summed up in a praise i suspect he is proud of having made famous. you're fired. i'm not joking. think about that. think about that. think about everything you learned as a child no 345er9
where you were raised. how can there be pleasure in saying you're fired? he is trying to tell us he cares about the middle class? give me a break. that's a bunch of malarkey. [applause]. i tell you -- [cheers and applause]. folks, whatever he thinks, whatever he thengs and i mean -- thinks and i mean it from the middle of -- from the bottom of my heart. i am called middle class joe.
it means you are mott sophisticated. i know we have strong and why we have held together. i know why we are united. it is because there is a growing middle class. this guy does president have -- doesn't have a clue about the middle class. not a clue. folks when the middle class does well, the rich do very well and the poor have hope. they have a way up. he has no clue about what makes america great. he has no clue, period. [applause]. >> you got it.
>> not a clue. not a clue. not a clue. >> folks. >> let me say something that has nothing to do with politics. let me talk about something that i am deadly serious about. this is a come flaw indicated and uncertain world we live in. the threats are too great. the times are too uncertain to elect donald trump as president of the united states. no major party nominee in the history of this nation has ever known less or less
prepared to deal with our national security. we cannot elect a man who exploits our fears of isis and other terrorists and who has no plan what so ever to make us safer. a man who embraces the tactics of our enemieses. torture, religious intelligence. you all know. all of the republicans know. that's not who we are. it betrays our values. it alienates those we need in the fight against isis. donald trump with all of his rhetoric would make us less safe. we cannot elect a man who be littles our closest allies and embracing people like vladimir putin. >> a man who seeks to sew division as his own gain and
disorder around the world. he confuses buster with strength. >> we cannot let that happen as americans, period. [applause]. folks, i have -- no one ever doubts at me and i say sometimes i say all that i mean. let me tell you about every world leader i have met and i met them all. it is never, never, never a good bet to bet against america. we have the finest fighting force in the world. not only -- >> usa! usa! usa!
>> not only do we have the largest economy in the world, but we have the strongest economy in the world. we have the most productive workers in the world and given a fair shot, given a fair chance americans have never, ever, ever let their country down. never, never. only -- ordinary people like us who do extraordinary things. wewe've had candidates who tried to get elected appealing to our fears but they did not succeed. we never bow. we never bend. we never break.
we endure and overcome and always move forward. that's why i can say with absolute conviction i am more optimistic about our chances today than when i was elected as a 29-year-old kid to the senate. the 21 west -- the 21st century will be the american century. we lead not only on the example of our power, but the power of our example. that is the history of the journey of america. and had god willing hillary will write the next chapter in that journey. we are america and second to none and we own the finish line. don't forget it. god bless you all and may god protect our troops. come on.
we're america! >> have to love the patriotism. we are back with democratic strategist and fox news contributor judith miller. >> he was targeting trump and trumpeting hillary. what did you think? >> the only person he didn't talk about was tim kaine. it is the vice president's name and he was giving a speech and you would think the vice president of the united states would talk about the next opinion. >> that's a good point. jay he said his name once. >> introduce him because a lot of people don't know who he is. great missed opportunity. his job, i think was to talk about tim kaine. >> can we just say something about joe biden? this will probably be the last time we will see him at a
major event. after his years and decades of dedication and what he went through with bow beau biden's death. >> and the loss of his own wife and child. to be reminded this guy came into the senate at 29 years old and dutifully served the entire time. he is universally liked. someone like tim kaine is different. maybe he will end up in the same way. i thought it was a magnificent speech. i thought his targeting of the middle class and thinking of his own roots. joejoe biden will leave the administration without a ton of money. this is somebody in public service his entire life. he is really telling that story when he says we grew up like you did. when he says donald trump doesn't understand your experience he gets that. that's something the clinton
campaign needs to bring home. and the way he lives his life doesn't reflect that. he was an incredible spokesman. i agree on the tim kane point. i never have seen him fired up. >> judy. >> especially because he and hillary clinton disagreed about a lot. >> domestic policy and foreign policy. more than that it was a perfect blend in this speech of the champion of the middle class. he sees himself and projects himself as one and as an effective attack dog. this is a statement where no candidate has known less than donald trump. that's an amazing staple and
the message we were talking about all night, mourning in america. >> we will talk more after this break. the final day of the dnc tonight. they brought this on themselves.
